An update: this past fall, a number of artists started meeting about organizing an Artists Network under the umbrella of CUARC newest community art program- Artists Peace Hub. It is a way to help our neighborhood grow & develop in a positively. We are helping a business district develop around Kedzie pink line stop. This district would have an emphasis on the arts.
First we plan to develop North Lawndale Area Artists Network for artists from this area & beyond. A core group of artists from North Lawndale area plus other artists are looking at possible space for a cooperative art gallery/cafe/youth art program. We have a building in mind. Also, we begin by offering benefits & responsibilities for artists who are interested in becoming a part of the program.
One benefit for artists: The gallery that Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center has on our current site- Liz Long Gallery, will begin in July 2018 through December 2018 showing group shows of their art. This will be a way to work together, get to know each other. These shows will be for artists who are involved in this project. Gallery needs your applications now to be included. contact@urbanartretreat.com
The last art show to take place in the gallery before this change takes place is on the theme: "About Discrimination". If you have art on the theme "About Discrimination", would like your art included for the month of June 2018, follow guidelines on website (art to arrive at gallery between May 28 - May 30, 2018) Please include your full name and complete street address. thank you, Dianna C. Long, curator

Unleashed dogs. What's the best course of action?

Feels like I've been seeing an uptick in the number of unleashed dogs over here K-Town. Sometimes just let out to wander the block, sometimes being "walked" without a leash and sometimes who the heck knows, but most of the time these are clearly dogs that someone owns, often wearing a collar.

Feels like I've been seeing an uptick in the number of unleashed dogs over here K-Town. Sometimes just let out to wander the block, sometimes being "walked" without a leash and sometimes who the heck knows, but most of the time these are clearly dogs that someone owns, often wearing a collar.

I keep my dog leashed or inside our fenced yard, but he gets really worked up when there's a dog loose wandering around. I'm worried that another dog will come after him on a walk or he or the other dog will find a way in or out of our yard and get in a fight.

As I understand it, Chicago law requires all pets to be leashed when not on their own property and there's a $300 fine for not doing so. So what's the best way to handle this? It's dangerous and illegal, but more and more folks just seem unwilling to properly leash their pet? Should I just call 911 every time?

I've tried suggesting to owners that they leash their dog, but I feel like a jerk and generally the response is not positive. I've only had one owner actually listen and that was because I gave him a leash and a piece of wood to cover a hole in his fence.
