Renowned South Side Irish fiddler coming to Beverly Arts Center

Tickets to the show at 2407 W. 111th St. in Chicago's Morgan Park neighborhood cost $25.

Renowned South Side Irish fiddler coming to Beverly Arts Center
Liz Carroll's celebrated career as an Irish fiddler began when the piano her parents rented for her couldn't make it up the stairs of their South Side home. As the truck pulled away, Carroll's parents agreed that perhaps the violin was a better fit.

  • Clissold Elementary School reviewed by a parent

We have two children at this school in primary grades, and they love going to school everyday. The montessori approach to learning is wonderful. We are very pleased with both of their teachers and paraprofessionals in the classroom, who work so hard to meet the needs of all students in their classes. One of my children is on a 504, and I was very impressed with the teacher's level of effort and concern put into keeping my child safe, happy, and challenged every day. The other is above grade level in academics, and she is still challenged by the differentiated activities and projects in the classroom. We also love the amount of field trips and the positive energy coming from both administrators. And the opportunities for parent involvement seem endless.

Painter Winifred Godfrey returns to Beverly Arts Center for homegrown show

Winifred Godfrey leans on one of her signature oil paintings of flowers. Godfrey won one of the first competitive art shows at the Beverly Arts Center. She is returning as the community art center at 2407 W. 111th Street celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Construction of the Beverly Arts Center began in 1968 on the grounds of the private school at 2153 W. 111th St. and was complete one year later. Godfrey said her father encouraged her to participate in the first competitive art show there in 1983. She won first prize.

Many of the pieces that brought her acclaim will be on display at the Beverly Arts Center, which moved into a 40,000-square-foot facility on the busy corner of 111th Street and Western Avenue in 2002.

Winifred Godfrey became interested in art shortly after moving to Morgan Park and enrolling in nearby Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School. During these formative years, Godfrey, 73, delved into drawing and painting as she struggled to fit in socially after moving into the neighborhood from Englewood.

Mr. Bendik is asking for $326.96:
My students need an IPVO document camera to increase their engagement in the learning process. Visual learners will benefit from seeing the work of their friends during a lesson.
