    Police are warning residents on the Far South Side about burglaries of vacant homes in the Roseland and Washington Heights areas in January, according to a community alert. In at least eight incidents since Jan. 15, burglars have broken into the vacant homes and taken appliances from inside, police said.

Scammer Alert

Young Caucasian male knocks on doors saying he is doing a concrete job down the street on another house and has some leftover concrete that he does not want to waste. Offers to do a small tuckpointing job for 25.00. He gives a card from Dr. Drain at 773-642-3478 and says that is his cell phone number. Called Dr. Drain who is a sewer and plumbing company and they know nothing about this. They are very concerned as they sent someone out to pass out cards in the neighborhood. Scammers are using cards and flyers from other businesses to get money.

    How did chunks of yellow ice end up on the roof of a suburban home? Elk Grove Village police were working to solve that mystery Tuesday. The homeowner suspected it came from an airplane, but that may not be the case. Dawn Scarpulla was puttering around her house Monday morning when she was scared by a loud noise.

    Google is considering opening another operations center in Chicago, an addition that could bring thousands of jobs to the city. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel confirmed the city is in talks with Google during a ground breaking for a South Side residential development. "I don't want to talk about one particular company, because they're a public company," said Emanuel.
