Spark Energy Salespeople Going Door-to-Door

Hi everyone! My first post here, and I just wanted to send a note that there are some pretty aggressive salespeople going door-to-door around by me (East Rogers Park).

They're from Spark Energy, and they start off talking about how you are probably eligible for green energy and they want to see if you're getting the right services or something like that. Then they start asking you to go get your ComEd and PeoplesGas bills so they can look at...

I have no opinion on the company or their services. Only letting people know so they have time to do their own google searches about the company and their services and aren't caught off guard by them. They walk around in suits and talk to each other with walkie talkies.

Health Inspection Shut Down - What Would Stop you from Going Back?

I've been heartbroken by finding out two of my favorite places - Heartland Cafe and Sun Wah were shut down by the health inspector at some point.

I really love duck and can't get it anywhere else in the city. I read the violations and opted to try them again. No complaints and I didn't get sick! My last bout of food poisoning was unfortunately recently from Pizzeria Serro.

But I was wondering, what would prevent my fellow Chicagoans from going back? Are there any Health Inspection violations so egregious, that even if they made the necessary fixes, you wouldn't go back? Hearing from people who are in the food service industry or health inspection would be especially welcome!

    A lot places get shut down. Depends on the severity for me to not return

Hey Peoples Gas, why is my gas bill so mysteriously huge this month?!

A few of my neighbors and myself were surprised by ridiculously high gas bills today and want to know why. Is it because of all the gas line work that's been going on in the neighborhood?

    Ours was higher as well but it showed our actual use and "balance" but the budget amount remained the same that would be withdrawn from our account. They are one right under another so I had a bit of a "what the...?" moment myself.

Was the Rogers Park rapist caught.

There is a story about a knife wielding rapist in the news. Is this the same rapist from Devon Ave or the one on North Shore? There have been others in Rogers Park but they did not get the press time these did.

Walking does a body good!

Morning RParkers,

Since moving to Chicago in August I gained about 20 pounds :-( I was on the verge of losing my last 10 pounds to reach my healthy BMI, which sucked!

So I promised myself to kick butt! I went on a health kick, cleaned up my diet and ditched the zip car and CTA replaced it with walking roughly 6-8 miles a day.

My coworkers think I'm nuts lmao. I canceled my gym membership and happy to report since March 31, as of this morning, according to my doctor's scale I lost 12 pounds. My home scale says 14, but whatever.

My doctor was amazed. I told her I've been walking the fat away :-)

18 more pesky pounds....to reach my ultimate healthy BMI goal.

I'm starting a walking club....please join us next Saturday. Healthy Living!! :-)

Here's an easy solution to brighten up your yard and add some security.

Last year we put in a staked garden flood light on our corner because we had small groups of people hanging out on our corner. They would meet regularly and were very loud, they would sit on the cars and throw bottles and trash til all hours of the night. So, we placed a staked flood light at the base of a tree and shined it up into the tree, after trimming it up from the bottom, and so far so good. They do not like the lights, they prefer dark corners, so we eliminated the darkness. We have it on a timer so it makes it even easier, and it looks very pretty too. We will be putting in another one this weekend.
Prior to doing this we would call police, but more often than not, they would be gone by the time the police arrived.
It was also a very effective way to decorate your space because during the Holidays, we replaced the clear lights with multi-colored lights.
Just an easy way to beautify your garden and keep yourself a bit safer...I recommend you try it.

  • What about all the songbirds that are going to die? Each light makes a difference no matter how small it is.

    What about those poor folks who were hanging out on your corner? Won't somebody think of them?

Question for people who would be hurt by plastic bag ban

I'm a student at Northwestern University and I'm writing an article about the plastic bag ban proposal in Chicago. I would really like to talk to some people who might be against the ban for various reasons, especially retailers or people who own stores that might be hurt by this ban. Lost a tortoiseshell cat?

There is a lovely tortoiseshell hanging out by our backdoor (Greenleaf and Glenwood). S/he clearly came from a home, but no collar or any other identifying markings. (We don't have a car, so I can't drive it anywhere.) Anyone lost her or want to take care of her? We can't though I wish...

  • If you can get her, I can help out if need be. Hopefully it's the same cat Jess saw on the flyer and you can get her home!

  • I have a pet carrier if you need to borrow it, There is Felines & Canines (6379 N Paulina St,) Clark and Devon basically. They are a no kill shelter that could possibly check for a tag. In box me if you need the carrier so we can get this little guy to a safe place.

A lot of buildings on my street have been gut-rehabbed over the last several years. Others have mentioned Sol Cafe, Caribbean Bakery. Down the street on Jarvis there are several bars/restaurants. The owners of Towbar on Jarvis just opened a brew pub called The Peckish Pig down the street on Howard which is amazing.

    I took a look at your map and noticed you are looking at 821 Brummel in Evanston. My friend actually lives in that building (has for years) and there's a chance that place is right above her as I know her neighbors just moved out! It's a beautiful building!

Trying to find an apartment

My lease is up June 1 and I am not having any luck finding an apartment that I like. If anyone has any leads please let me know. Ideally, I would like to find a place that has the following:

* a 1 or 2 bedroom apt.
* modern- I don't like vintage stuff
* Allows cats and dogs with no monthly pet rent. Bonus if there is no pet fee at all. :)
* Has in-unit laundry
* Has parking
* Rent range - under $1,250
* Within walking distance to the red line

I like the :Loyola so that would be my first pick.

Chiraqi had a suggested a gun law that would be well publicized which would be a minimum 10 years sentence for illegal possession of a firearm…

John Versical had suggested legalizing certain drugs as the illegality of them has not made them less accessible. This would free resources and decimate the majority of the gangster economy.
What else?

For example, Chicago just banned the sale puppy mill dogs. This leaves a niche to fill. Perhaps we could find some government funding to start our own program, where shelter dogs are retrained and rehabilitated so they could be sold in conventional stores. This program has been shown to work very well in prison systems throughout the country. Convicts working with dogs… (Anyone who can’t learn to love the smiling face on Pitbull is too far gone in my book…)

What other real world solutions can we offer??

New lights on Juneway are in

There was a crowd amazed at the new lighting installed when they were turned up. (thanks in part to PB voting). There were a number of concerned neighbors about placement/light itself/etc., but I think the overall consensus is they're a great improvement. The light color seems to be warm and not that obnoxious cool white LED stuff they were using for awhile.

( A few have suggested painting them black for aesthetics as has been done w/ the same lights in other parts of the city and to match the lights at sheridan, there are pros and cons to this, thoughts? )

  • Chet 606 Rogers Park, NOHavana, CE

    Too late to paint them black. If done on the street, they will eventually flake and look poor. Should have been done in the factory. Plus, postings poorly removed with tape and stickers would look really bad on black. The aluminum will fade a little. I think it will be...

    The new light on Juneway first alley E of Ashland SB, is in the path of the garbage trucks when they make the turn on/off Juneway. Is there any possibility of getting one of those large stones in the parkway?

    Thanks to whoever is responsible for the lights. They're great!

  • Helen North of Howard for 50 + years

    There is no reason to paint the new light poles black. If the neighbors on Juneway had voted or even paid any attention to last's year's Participatory Budget vote, they would have known the new lights were going to be installed. The city does not install large stones in the parkway, Chester. They did either bury or remove the one we had there, though, during some previous project. I don't recall where we got it.

  • d3 NOH

    Large boulders, Buy the yard. 10 cents / # I think. but it was likely removed during the people's project, someone should ask them to replace it before they run out of money on the project. I think the placement of that no parking sign on the newly moved pole is questionable too. even aside of the fact that it's just loosely strung now.

The Political Closet

When will any of the persons who want to run for the office of Alderman come out of their closets and speak to us in public? Are their any or are they just staying in the closet? Politics should be an open process but it doesn't seem like there are any challengers at this time with better ideas than what we have which seems pretty good to me. All in all Alderman Moore is doing a great job in a tough Ward to manage. If anyone thinks that she or he could do a better job I sure would like to hear about it. If you are out there please come out of your closets.

Yeah, I'm angry.....and I should be, cause in a weird way you m-----f-----s are part of the reason why I'm out here on the hunt at 2 a.m.(I'ma get back to that in a sec). Anyway, I just popped a pill, washed it down with 80 proof and my two homies in the car with me just lit a blunt and passed it to me. The tactical plain-clothes officers are headed in for shift-change and we ain't too worried about the fat-a-- blue and whites working the graveyard shift. The 40 cal. on my lap got 16 hollow-tipped slugs and on my dead big brother, somebody from the hood that did it is gonna die tonight.

Haha, ya'll think I'ma drug-crazed thug right? Wrong!... Truth is, is that I'm hurting about what happen to my brother and my other friends in the hood, and scared it could happen to me. But the hood teaches you that you gotta use that hurt and fear to strike back, if not, then you ain't gone live long where I come from.

Funny though, how it seems like I was groomed for this moment all my life, the abuse at home, weed-smoking mama telling me I would never be sh-t, getting jumped on after school, teachers who saw only a dumb, bad kid and not understanding how to help, and you people reading this who cross the street when you see someone like me as though I'm garbage to be avoided, thereby confirming my thug identity... smh.

No blame game here though, cause when I pull this trigger tonight, I'm probably gonna be caught, and if I end up spending the rest of my life in prison, it's cool cause everything I've experienced in life told me I never had a chance anyway.

Sleep well tonight, tell yourself it was "him" who pulled the trigger not you.

So just how are you going to achieve this "Personal Responsibility," other than putting it inside dashes and arrows?
There's no end to this kind of solution:
War? --> International responsibility <--
Low wages? --> Corporate responsibility <--
Sexism? --> Gender Responsibility <--
Corruption? --> Voter Responsibility<--
Lack of education? --> Educational responsibility <--
If you shout the phrase long enough, does everyone magically become responsible?
Of course we want Personal Responsibility. Of course it would be great if everyone were Responsible. The question is what you're going to do to get people to be Personally Responsible, and specifically what you're going to do with all those problems for which we are all so Unpersonally Responsible and that make it so difficult for some young people to break free of a culture of violence: billions in drug money and high demand for drugs; the increasingly daunting cost of higher education; legacies of negativity handed down from one family to another; lack of access to jobs that lead to better jobs; public perceptions that certain races are more worthy than others; embattled schools forced to test rather than educate; money and power increasingly in the hands of rich people who only pretend to care about poverty and whose "solutions" so often make things worse; the greed of an increasingly consumerist society; citizens who increasingly vote on their own self-interests and systematically defund initiatives that might make a difference; easy access to guns and a national culture that glorifies guns;

People's Gas Parking Restrictions

It’s appalling how People’s Gas is allowed to set open ended two week parking restrictions on nearly every part of a 3 block radius around Estes and Greenview. If this was downtown or even Lakeview they’d be forced to have much more defined timelines, better communication to the community, and a more restricted closure schedule. Are the project managers at People’s so bad that they can’t plan for one street for two days, the next street for two days, and so on?

  • If the signs are outdated, by all means, tear them down. I was called out by one of my neighbors that they were going to tow my car, an outdated sign was on the street. The tow truck driver told me that he didn't bother to check the dates on...

    If the signs are outdated, by all means, tear them down. I was called out by one of my neighbors that they were going to tow my car, an outdated sign was on the street. The tow truck driver told me that he didn't bother to check the dates on the sign, just saw the sign and went in to move my car.

    I understand that weather does play a part in the work that is being done, however, many of the streets are with no parking signs so that the workers on the job will have a place to park. I personally have a problem with that; residents often have a difficult time finding a place to park and yet have to give up their spots for the workers whom are not even working in that area.

    It's too bad that we have to pay for the work with our People's Gas bills and on top of that we have to put up with People's Gas having absolutely no consideration for their customers. And, People's Gas has a monopoly in Chicago. They can do what ever they want and charge us more money. Too bad, we don't have a choice.

  • I wish the workers were parking on my block... at least that would feel like the signs were justified in some way. It's been empty street with no work, now and in the fall.

Thank you to all who've taken interest in my posts over the past few days. I've been delighted by the enthusiasm and passion in your commentary. I find myself enlightened by, and empathetic of all points of view presented.

Thing is, is that I don't believe the idea some of you may have formed of me "thechiraqi" and my writings would coincide if you guys ran into me on the street. So I thought I'd give you guys a fast rundown of me.

My mama tried to kill me, my sister and take her own life when I was 3 y.o.... various foster-homes thereafter for 4 years until the state deemed mama "worthy" of custody again. The physically abusive step-father came next. I was a "runaway" by 12 y.o.... 26 tours in the Juvenile Detention Center up until age 16 for various crimes. After a small hiatus traveling, my adult criminal career scored me numerous arrests until 3 felony convictions awarded me 9 years in the "best" Maximum Security prisons the state has to offer, (phony cheerfulness intended).

I was paroled five years ago and haven't been back since. Most days I dress and look like the "common hoodlum", it's a roll over habit that's hard to get rid of. I don't actually speak as well as I write. I have only a G.E.D. and no college credentials.

Now at age 31, because of my background or lack thereof, I can't bring about the needed changes in the community but I've been writing in hopes of inspiring you guys to do so.

    You need not have any special skills educationally to reach people. You have a wonderful voice -- you need to use it. I can totally relate to being able to speak better with a pen and paper versus actually standing in front of people as in a public forum. Hopefully, these discussions will make you realize what a gift you have; you need to be blogging somewhere everyone can see. I'm sure everyone here would sign up!

Understanding the Violence in Rogers Park

For most of you who regularly visit this blog, (e.g. law-abiding, mainstream society citizens) or "white people" (no racism intended), will never become the "intended" target of a shooting, nor will your children. Although you the readers and I share the same community, we have totally different realities within it.

The grey minivan who's occupants killed 16 year old Keno Glass just a few days ago. They were "hunting" with one "game" in mind oblivious to anything else. See, the occupants realities and you guys reality will never cross. But my reality is that they could have saw me before they saw Keno.

I am one of many who live in the economically starved portions of Rogers Park where everyone wants to get out, but just trying to survive the next day, week, month consumes all your energy. Education is the way out, everyone knows this, but finding support and having opportunity to persue it is something rarely given.

So we find ways to pacify ourselves alcohol, drugs, the newest Jordans loud music, the new dance, promiscuity. All to not think about our circumstances or lack thereof.

Yeah we look rough, tough and thugged out, but theres a lot more than what meets the eye.

There are complete retards in our neighborhoods though that have given up all hope of ever be anything other than what our society has labled them. These are the shooters and killers.

Everyday, because of these people I have watch every passing car as I walk through my neighborhood because when the killers from the rival neighborhoods come "hunting" they don't care that I'm not in a gang or that I've never held a gun in my life, they don't care about my dreams and aspirations, but because I look like everyone else I become a target? I may not be a perfect, law-abiding, mainstream society citizen, I smoke weed, I listen to loud music, and I wear Jordans, but this does NOT MEAN I SHOULD DIE!

This is my reality in Rogers Park and I need you guys to understand it.

    I lived on Howard St for a year in a studio and although I didn't look like a target still was to go out alone unless my 6'4 230 lb fiance was with me. It didn't phase him at all though. I got used to the neighborhood. I love the movie theater and the Starbucks plaza for people watching. They did a nice job with the Howard Station and we were taking it downtown everyday. We still use the tennis courts.

    I would not been able to get out of that studio if I didn't have my education. We saved enough to buy a condo in Edgewater that we were admiring for awhile because it was next door to the park for my kid and it had everything we wanted.

    We still hang out in RP of course.

The Chicago Police Department is working around the clock at an aggressive strategy to prevent a repeat of the unusual spike in gun violence that has plagued our neighborhood in the last few weeks.

I attended Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy's monthly "CompStat" accountability session for north side district commanders this morning.

Though I am not able to share the details of the specific strategies employed, rest assured that 24th District Commander Thomas Waldera (see photo below) is receiving reinforcements from other Chicago Police Department units and is employing them in a comprehensive manner to prevent another outbreak of violence. The City of Evanston is also helping by redeploying some of its police officers to Howard Street.

Commander Waldera has been out in the field late into the night directing his forces.

These efforts are bearing fruit. The police have recovered six guns, some of them fully loaded, from, from suspected gang members. The individuals possessing those guns were arrested and charged.

Police also have arrested and charged an individual suspected in the March 25th shooting of a man at Ashland and Jarvis. They believe they know the identity of the other assailant and are currently searching for him.

Police also arrested an individual they suspect of being involved in the early Tuesday morning shooting of a 16-year-old boy at Jonquil and Ashland. Unfortunately, they currently only have enough evidence to charge the individual with the unlawful possession of an automobile.

The police and my office cannot do it alone, however. We need the involvement of all community residents. I urge you to attend one of the upcoming monthly CAPS beat meetings.

For information on the time and location of the CAPS meetings and more information on the efforts of the 24th District and my office to stem the gang violence, visit;

    Leelee - with cell phones what is received is the number and the location of the nearest cell tower that the call is bounced off of. With a land line the exact address is given. All you have to do is tell the call taker that you want the call to be anonymous. At that point the call taker hits a button on the console and your information is blocked. It is not sent to the dispatcher. One drawback with this is if the officer wants to speak with you after they get on scene they will not be able to.

    Another thing that you can do is to ask for a "silent dispatch". Use this only if you are calling for a situation concerning a drug dealing. Most of the dealers (if not all) have scanners on their phones. They hear the calls being dispatched over the radio. A silent dispatch is sent over the internet to the cars that are in the area not the radio. This way the officers will show up and the dealers will not know they are coming.

When to call 911/311 to report buildings...

I'm sure this has been posted and re-posted but I want to call out the 311 to report the landlord/building as having tenants that are gang members.

Other neighborhoods on Everyblock have mentioned that they started "phone trees" to communicate information that needed to get around. Might not be a bad idea at all to note suspicious behavior etc.

When to call 911

Other neighborhoods on Everyblock have mentioned that they started "phone trees" to communicate information that needed to get around. Might not be a bad idea at all to note suspicious behavior etc.

When to call 911

If you see any gang criminal activity such as drug dealing, fighting, breaking into garages, etc.. please call 911 and report the activity.
If you observe multiple gang members loitering on a street corner, in a park, etc.. Call 911 and report it.
If you observe gang members drinking in public call 911 and report it.
Remember you can remain anonymous when you call 911.

When to call 311

If there are gang members living in a building call 311 and ask to report the building to the troubled buildings department and they will issue viloations to the building owner and pressure them to evict the gang members or the landlords will receive fines and possibly lose their properties.
If you observe any gang graffiti please call 311 or go to www.cityofchicago.org and report it. They will remove it free of charge. Even if it is not on your property just call 311 and give them the address. Graffiti makes the neighborhood look bad and gangbangers like to hang in areas that look unkept.
Remember you can remain anonymous when you call 311.

Need a Good Handyman(woman)

Looking for someone who is reliable and multi-talented in doing small electrical, a little woodworking, etc. jobs at my apartment. I have several little things on my 'to do list' that need to be taken care of and my building manager is just never available. Must have references.

  • I'd highly recommend Bijan Solutions Handyman (847) 910-3132. He knows what he's doing, and he charges very fair prices. He's very workmanlike and cleans up after himself. I've been using him for years, including when I lived in west Rogers Park. It *may* take a little while to find a good time on his schedule. I'm also an Angie's List member, and his ratings on that list are all A's.

  • I've just had a series of jobs done by Lakeshore Handyman and I enthusiastically recommend them.

Lose Your Lizards?

Found these 2 guys in my front yard this morning, in a container in a paper bag. They were dead (it seemed), brought them in and now they have arisen. Just in time for Easter. About 4" nose to tail. No tags or chips. Are they yours? If so, wtf?

    Dee, some mice seem incredibly stupid. A year or so ago, I was going to bed without turning on the bedroom light to avoid waking my companion. I saw something small and dark on the bed so I got a flashlight. My cat had dispensed with a mouse and left it on the bed as a present for me. And possums are all over the place. I, too, find them hanging out on the third-floor porch.

Chicago Electric Aggregation / Integrys

So, doing the math, I seem to be paying ComEd 4.2 cents/kWh for electricity. The notice from the city regarding Integrys says that if I don't opt-out, I'll be paying a price of 5.299 cents/kWh through May 2015. Assuming everything staying flat, it seems to be cheaper to stay with ComEd. But, rates are going up in June, no? Is anybody else considering opting out, or do you have an opinion on why it'd be wise to not opt-out?

And if I do opt-out, can I opt-in again later? Or am I out of the loop until something else comes along in May 2015?
