It can be such an overwhelming task to start something like this but it is so worth it. With warmer weather around the corner now is the time to get out, get to know your neighbors and get active in your community.

I will be cross posting this in both Ward 36 & 38 as well as some of the "neighborhoods" here on EveryBlock and Next Door.

    Laymaneers,
Great info all the right stuff needed, and it really works. We need to keep moving the bad guys out of our neighborhood and block clubs do that.Don't forget criminals of all nature share more info with each other than neighbors.I am not saying you need to become great friends with your neighbors but know what's going on they do....

You can have all the meetings you want, we ain't going anywhere. Schmucks

How early can workers start in the morning?

I was wondering how early workers can start in the morning? Construction, garbage pick up, landscapers... like 6:30-7am... Is that early? Or is there a time they are supposed to wait until?

Pest Control - ants

Friends

Can I get suggestions on local pest control services/remedies for ants? Sprays seem to have worked to keep them out at certain apparent points of entry. But my ants are quite smart and mobile and it seems 1-2 continue to find their way in. Might be time to bring in a pro. Your recommendations are much appreciated.

Landscaping Recommendations

The previous owners of our home basically ripped everything out of the yard, laid down some sod, then never really took care of it while the house was on the market. We've got bare patches in the yard and dead bushes in the front and along the side of the house. I'm looking for recommendations for a landscaping company to help remedy our little eyesore as I have the opposite of a green thumb. Thanks in advance!

The makings for an awesome weekend: Grab a delicious gourmet burger at DMK Burger Bar, while wearing a gorgeous piece of art fabricated by Thorp Mom Alison Mooney, then head over to watch a comedy or a tragedy by that guy Bill Shakespeare, and then stretch it all out on Sunday morning at CorePower Yoga!! Sounds like a good plan!

Don't forget that you can enter your highest bid so your bids can be incrementally increased without having to sit in front of your computer all day. Though if you're the kind of gambler who likes to watch those bids roll in, you can do that, too.

And you can buy your tickets for Taste of Thorp while you're at it! Happy Friday!!

The grass is a mess and I'm not so concerned with that as I am with my sprinkler line was was torn/cut in several places. Do they go back and repair this or do I need to contact someone? My meter hasn't been switched to outside either so I know to expect that soon but just wondering how others sprinkler lines were managed/repaired. Is it worth expecting them to repair the divot on pre-existing concrete? Thanks!

  • We had this work done. It looked terrible while they did it and I was skeptical. In the end they put everything back to where it was or better (I have fewer dandelions in the sod they laid). However, I don't know if the individual crews all work the same, etc. etc.

So they came and moved the meter today. I have to say they were pretty efficient. It was about 5 people in and out working on my house as well as 2 other neighbors houses at the same time. It took about 2 hours and I had scheduled a couple days ago when they rang my doorbell. They said as far as they knew, the sprinkler lines, grass and damaged concrete should all be done by the end of June. Crossing my fingers this is true. I don't mind waiting as long as it'll get done!

There is no way the police will ever be able to reason with the section of people that give them the most trouble or are considered to be the most dangerous. Brute force is the only thing they will understand and many times the only thing that will stop them. I'd love to see the police brutality whiners, ride with the police on the west side or in Englewood for a year to experience the garbage they deal with. They would change their tune in a minute. As i see it, you drop one of these whiners off in the hood and see how they fair getting out of there in one piece. Drop them in the holy city around 16th and Pulaski. That would be a nice place to start. Ha Ha Ha.

  • Police brutality does exist though, unfortunately. I was a victim once and have seen it myself as well. It's not funny when you are pistol whipped, slapped around by a black gloved officer after he is emptied out your wallet and thrown your handbag on the cement and taken what he wants.
So some whiners do have legitimate complaints!
But not all cops are abusive and not all "whiners" have illegitimate reasons for their police brutality complaints!

I really like my regular beef and have not found a cogent reason alternatively a tasty reason to change. My ears have been open since first encountering grass fed beef at whole foods in Houston maybe thirty five years ago. I raised my own beef in high school some ten years before that and then later bought quarters from a locker while hanging and could be told which area pasture it was raised in.

Here, in another TED talk, he describes how to make your area walkable:
"How do you get people to walk?
A Reason to Walk (Balance of Uses)
A Safe Walk (Reality and Perception)
A Comfortable Walk (Space and Orientation)
An Interesting Walk (Signs of Humanity)"

Most interesting encapsulation for me is how a rebuilt bridge in Columbus, Ohio revitalized a neighborhood, see time mark 17:40

Can Six Corners Become a More Bike-Friendly Intersection? Plan Underway

Named for the intersection of Cicero and Milwaukee avenues at Irving Park Road, Six Corners can be tough to navigate on foot or by bicycle because of long crosswalks and relentless traffic, which often moves at a good clip.

The plan also calls for a pedestrian circulator to be built to allow folks to get around the shopping district without crossing Cicero, Milwaukee and Irving Park Road. To be built, a building would have to be torn down, Wefenstette said, acknowledging that is not likely to happen any time soon.

Ald. John Arena (45th) announced plans in February to use $140,000 from the Portage Park Tax Increment Financing District to build two refuge islands at 3832 N. Cicero Ave. near Bernice Avenue and at 3900 N. Cicero Ave. near Byron Avenue in the Six Corners Shopping District.

The ballot is expected to include the chance to spend $8,000 on a people spot at Milwaukee and Cuyler avenues at Six Corners. People spots transform parking spots into playful places for people to gather, officials said.

In addition, projects on the ballot would shorten crosswalks in the shopping district by extending the curbs and earmarking $60,000 for a pedestrian refuge island at Cicero Avenue at Pensacola Avenue, officials said.

Hope there not going to use the alley as a commercial entrance or allow cars through the alley preventing the Police, Fire Department and Ambulance from any life threatening situation or even prevent some other city services or the utility companies from passage through a grid lock neighborhood.

Let's call our Alderman Ariel Reboyras and complained, so please call him starting MONDAY at 773-794-3095 before the zoning change or he gets his license!!

BTW Kelsie, I recall there was a notice sent for a community meeting for the cash loan before they got started building, so there WAS an opportunity to oppose it.

Just FYI, maybe not totally fair to put the blame on the Alderman

  • I am from the area, and personally speaking Addison and Cicero is way to congested. I can imagine what this car wash is going to do. I understand it is not a NEW car wash but the area already looks crappy with all the congestion. I am not sure how this helps out the community. The traffic in the area is already ridiculous so I can only imagine how much worse this gets.
