Legno...Best Restaurant in the Area??

Let's just say it's in my top 3. My wife and I stopped by for a last minute dinner date on Saturday Night and it ended up being one of the best nights we have had in a while. The atmosphere is nice, quiet and welcoming in the back and up front its more up beat in the bar area.

The food was legitimately amazing Italian fare. The waiter knew every detail of the menu items. The bartender is an expert mixologist. The host was very nice and accommodating....and the live entertainment, Stolie, was awesome. She'll be back April 25th, I highly recommend stopping in for the night...We will be there!!!!

Citgo Station - Austin & Montrose

I see that this service station is closed again. Does anyone know what has happened? I think there are notes posted on the windows and doors, but I have not gotten up that close to read them. Thanks!

  • I go by there a couple times a week and have not seen it operating for more than a year. Have been more attentive to it since the EveryBlock fuss last month about credit card holds. There were a couple of days maybe two weeks ago that some of the pumps sort a looked ready, but don't recall prices every up on any signs or evidence of the legally required attendant. Just what looked like workmen installing things.

It did BRIEFLY reopen. So much so that the alderman even commented that they did in a prior thread.

60641 mail delivery to be discussed at OIPA meeting tomorrow

From their email :

-a rep from Cong. Quigley's office will speak at our OIPA meeting tomorrow about what's going on to fix the abysmal mail delivery in 60641. He will also compile concerns about the Cicero Ave. Irving Park post office.

Monday, April 14, 7 PM, Irving Park Baptist Church, 4401 W. Irving Park at Kostner. Free, all welcome. Hope to see you there!

  • Update: Just got the phone with Cody. As stated, he is just the messenger, but I was able to give him the experience (And tracking numbers and dates) of the poor mail service in 60634. I encourage others to do so as well (he told me 60634 came in second to 60641 (so with as bad as ours was, if yours was worse, wow!)).

  • C Ped Suburban Irving Park Transplant

Our service had been spotty (late delivery, skipped days) but I just chalked it up to limited personnel and extreme temperatures.

Last night though my husband spotted bundles of mail (rubber banded bundles) on the ground outside our apartment building!! What the hell? Luckily my husband caught it and brought it inside, but lord knows how long it was outside or if some had already been stolen. What if it rained?! We're pretty furious, as you can imagine!

Cars speeding down McVicker

Ok so this is not the first time this happens. Last night I came home and I was helping my pregnant wife unload groceries from our car in front of our house. The next thing I know there's 2 cars chasing each other heading north on McVicker from Irving Park. So I immediately pulled her back from the street. As they fly past us I yell at them to slow down. A minute later here they come again!!! They turned on Mcvicker flying down the street, they do not slow down getting to Bell Plaine instead they just go faster. Finally when they get to Berteau they stop at that stop sign!!!! So they do not make a stop until 2 full long blocks later (on Mcvicker from Irving Pk. all the way to Bertau). Cars that are on Belle Plaine turning north on Mcvicker do not have a stop sign either. So guess what I'm trying to ask here is does anyone know how to get some stop signs or speed humps on Mcvicker and Bell Plaine? We moved into this beautiful neighborhood in 2009 from the "ghetto" there when cars used to come flying down the street like that, people used to throw bottles at them and break their windows to teach them a lesson. I would hate for this to ever happen in Portage Park. Summer is coming and kids will be kids, they will run across the street without looking and I would hate for a tragedy to ever happen to any my neighbors just because of a negligent driver(s).......

I'm sorry, but this time I led this astray, This all started with a close call for a pregnant woman that sounds like it could have been in front of my house, for this I am sorry, but I lived here over 25 years and found traffic on mcvicker to be a problem. my daughter grew up on this street and now my granddaughter and I am not afraid.

Barry Ave Street Lights not working properly going on 3 years

Alderman Tim, with all due respect, you always suggest that we contact our alderman with our problems. Many of us have contacted our alderman repeatedly and we get no cooperation. Personally, I have a street light on my block that is dim, candlelight dim, going on 3 years now. The entire row of lights on 5300 Barry Ave is not at full strength. Now here's the catch. The north side of Barry is Alderman Reboyas, the south side is Suarez. Two different alderman on one street is ridiculous, but I digress. My neighbors and I have called both aldermen multiple times. Suarez's office personnel says it's "not his ward". Reboyas sends someone out, but never with the directions I have given them. I have explained clearly that the light isn't burned out, it's DIM, a fuse has blown or something, but the lamp has electricity. This dim light is effecting the block of lights. S&S comes out, tests the pole to see if it's live and then leaves. No one gets to the root of the problem. We don't know who to turn to anymore and have actually given up contacting the city. Calling 311 doesn't work, neither does reporting it via the internet. Can you please give me some direction here. I'd appreciate a name of someone or an email of who I may contact. We need light. I'm tired of keeping my porch light on every night increasing my electric bill because our aldermen won't do their job and fix the lights here. Thanks for listening.

  • I agree about aldermen issues. I'm not sure why they split a residential street. The two of them need to get together to solve problems or better yet we need two good replacement candidates

I have a membership that I no longer use. I have fulfilled the terms of their contract so it isn't like I still owe them time or money. I looked at their website to see what I would need to cancel, and it says that I have to send a certified letter to their headquarters requesting the cancellation. Is this really what happens? It seems like such a pain! Has anyone had to do this? Am I not able to walk over there and have it done?

  • Yes really. You have to send it in and if you complain they will reimburse the charges to when you last attended.

  • I'm with Jan. If you cut them off at the source, they won't keep charging you. Or at least do that until you have the time to do the certified letter thing.

Best Chicken & Ribs

This place is a few steps out of Portage Park - but is well worth the trip. It is the best fried/broasted chicken and ribs I've had in a very long time. Small, family owned, great staff and a more than friendly owner. The chicken was tender, not greasy - ribs were perfectly cooked and the sauce was the perfect amount of tangy.

Mycorrhizal fungi for a tree

That is, I am looking for mycorrhizal fungi for a bare root tree I am planting.

I thought I had it but apparently no. And a bare root fruit tree arrived today in the mail. I need to plant it tomorrow or in the next 2 days, I don't want to wait any longer than that.

Previously I bought the mycorrhizal fungi online. Given the time constriction I need to find it here in Chicago.

Hence a question to my dear neighbors: is there a local store that carries mycorrhizal fungi for planting bare root trees?

Help will be appreciated very much. (Maybe even in fruit, if the tree survives and grows some :))

Thank you for help!

  • Pesche's in Des Plaines carries the Dr. Earth line of organic fertilizers. They have a starter fertilizer for new plantings and transplanting that contains mycorrhizae. I would call ahead to make sure it is currently in stock.

  • Thank you! I called - and they indeed have it.

Should Both the Portage and Patio go to Pot?

Check out this story at DNAInfo about the Patio Theater: http://dnain.fo/1jIwlEZ

If you read nothing else in the article take note of this:

"Carranza's track record at the Portage, which he abruptly shut down 11 months ago, and the Congress, which was shuttered after city officials yanked Carranza's liquor license and declared it unsafe because of building code violations."

Is this the type of business owner we want in our community?

  • It's too bad. I miss being able to take my kids to relatively inexpensive movie like my parents were able to do for me. We used to go to the Avon on Fullerton, Milford on Pulaski, along with the Portage, and Patio. Later me and my wife would go to the Morton Grove. Is there anyone who can turn these theaters into what the Logan theater in Logan Square and the Davis theater in Lincoln Square have become?

I am seriously concerned about the amount of traffic in the last few days, just when we are opening the windows. I heard about the resident above because of the loss of property value due to the new runway but I have used up my appeals and the last one didn't lower the value near enough, so regret accepting it. Does anyone have the no. to call and complain? We want to sell in a year or so and are very concerned. Has anyone noticed the number of homes on the market recently in Portage Park? Maybe its the increase in property taxes. Thank you.

  • There is no loss of property values. I personally don't believe they were given a tax reduction based on planes flying over their house. The assessor and BOR bases their decisions on comparable properties not on planes flight paths. I think the story was twisted but if you really dig into it, the reduction must have been based on equalized values

Good for you for prepping your home before you sell! I am a realtor and a professional home Stager, and I help my clients do these projects ALL the time! I'll advise that you may find replacing the cabinet doors and hardware is almost as costly as new cabinets all together! So might be wise to price out both options, truly. And Corian is often as expensive as granite! So be careful there too! Vinyl counters might be just fine! Let the new buyer put in the expensive counters!
A lot of my clients have gone to Studio 41. They have a location on Pulaski, south of Belmont approximately. There is always Home depot or Lowes, but they are NOT that affordable as Studio 41 has proven to be. There is also an outlet across the parking lot from Studio 41 that might have what you need for cabinets? Worth checking out anyway. But another idea is to go talk to Sherwin William on Milwaukee in Portage park. I work with SW all the time. They just might have a paint product that can paint over the laminate doors! I have transformed kitchens just by painting and then replacing the hardware. If you need any more advise for prepping your home and or Home Staging, feel free to email me at jbaron@atproperties.com

Just wanted everyone to be aware that I caught a young woman taking a UPS package from my front porch today. I just got home from picking up a few groceries and checked to see if the mail came or if we received any packages. As I opened the door, a woman was walking down my stairs with my package in her hands. She had light red hair and was dressed in a tight tank top and jeans and had a big set of headphones around her neck. I said "Excuse me, are you delivering that package" and she said "Yes, I'm glad you're here". Gave me the package and walked away. At first it looked like she was walking down the block towards the mail carrier, but then crossed the street and walked down Bellplane to Austin. Obviously she was not a UPS delivery - there was no truck in sight. She would have been very disappointed - the package contained sidewalk chalk and play doh for my granddaughter's Easter basket. I'm going to keep watch to see if I see her again, but thought the more eyes the better.

I posted something on here several months ago with regards to a window broken down the block from me. Glass was strewn across the sidewalk. When I called 311 I was told that they could not dispatch anyone and that I should call 911. when I called 911 I was told that they could do nothing about it unless I was the owner of the building or that I had immediately witnessed a crime. Going back to the crime scene later I found that not only was the window smashed out now the door has been broken open and was hanging broken from the jamb. The dispatcher told me that she would send someone to "close the door" later. This is but one of my examples of working with 911 and 311.

I don't want to assume that it was anything in particular and I was too far away to understand the lyrics to the singing they were doing...and I couldn't walk down to check it out either, before anybody asks.

It was a Stations of the Cross procession from the Jesuit Millenium Ctr at Irving/Menard to St. Ladislaus Church, Roscoe & Long. Lenten tradition, pre-Holy Week. Found it on the Jesuit website in Polish.
