Oak Park location offers Felony Franks a second chance, owner says

A big welcome to Felony Franks from North Avenue Neighbors Association of Oak Park.
Please stop by there for a sandwich before too long.

  • HoneyBadger resident

Stopped at Felony Franks today - had their Misdemeanor Weiner and it was delicious - comes with too few (but great) fries - little pricy at $4.09. Good competition for Johnny's and Gene & Jude's. Place is clean; folks are friendly. I was impressed. Happy to see humanitarian effort in action and wish them success.

  • We stopped by also. Excellent Polish sausage. Glad to see a short line waiting to order on Saturday around noon.

North Ave. 1 of 2 Oak Park busines districts with commercial vacancy increase

It's not surprising that North Avenue is one of only two Oak Park business districts where commercial vacancies were up in 2014. The Oak Park Economic Development Corp. does its best to show vacant North Avenue properties to prospective developers, owners and tenants. But without a plan and appropriate incentives, the vacancy problem can be expected to continue. North Avenue remains the most neglected business district in Oak Park. North Avenue Neighbors Association of Oak Park and the North Ave. Zoning and Development Advisory Committee (NAZDAC) are trying to change that.

As usual Galewood/Montclare residents are not mentioned by the people quoted in news article. In the next election there will be a bigger turnout as we select a new Mayor. Two of the candidates that live in Galewood area received somewhere in the neighborhood 22% total. As you may know long time Galewood residents are not happy being bounced out of the 36th ward as punishment for voting for Spasoto. We do blame the regular Democratic Party (whatever is left of the same).

Candidates tell us how you are going to be an independent alderman, I would like to know how you would vote to get rid of the traffic cameras, what is your opinion on Chicago debt reduction etc. etc.

  • Finian, those are excellent questions and I hope you have a chance to ask them at a candidate forum before the April runoff election.

I agree that Galewood/Montclare does not get enough media attention. In fact, the West/Northwest Side doesn't receive enough attention (except with regard to crime...).

Galewood/Montclare was even more important in the February election than you indicate. 3 of the 29th ward aldermanic candidates live in Galewood: Andolino, Galhorta and Taliaferro. Taliaferro alone got 22.5% of the vote.

Just one more comment - Good Alderman are our voices, city wide issues are important but more so is local resident support breaking through the maze of city government. For instance the wind storm of a couple of years ago. My area was completely ignored when the trees blew down. Out walking the dog one day and there was crew driving down the 1700 block of Nordica and they pulled over to help to clear some rubble. The guy running the crew could not believe the area was not cleaned up. Sposato had no power and Graham officially not our Alderman and my neighbors and I were stuck with Chicago politics.

If we need a new garbage can, the house next store is falling down, we need a pick up in the alley, graffiti on a garage. I certainly don't want to be told call 311, you know where that will get you.

    PS
Rahm and Chuy visit our area Lincoln Park gets plenty of attention.

Chicago Defender endorses Graham and Mitts for alderman

Alderman Deborah Graham has had the dubious task of rebuilding community trust from a former alderman who was convicted of corruption. It is important that the alderman understand the overall needs of the ward through ongoing communication with organizations, educators, police commanders and small businesses, as well as parks and recreation. Alderman Graham has proven her abilities and has been instrumental in securing park improvements for both Columbus and Amundsen Parks that have included soccer, baseball and volleyball programs. We endorse Alderman Deborah Graham for the 29th ward.

Opponent Tara Stamps is a CPS teacher who is supported by the Chicago Teachers Union and is a dedicated community activist in the tradition of her deceased mother, Marian Stamps, who has never served in public office. Alderman Mitts, however, has the greater name recognition and experience in government. She has earned the trust of the community which is rapidly growing in diversity. Mitts has worked to expand on more economic development, better public education and improvements in public safety. Thus, we believe that she deserves to be reelected and we endorse incumbent Alderman Emma Mitts.

  • THE DEFENDER MAKE A VERY BAD CHOICE IN ENDORSE GRAHAM FOR ALDERMAN.AMUNDSEN PARK DO NOT HAVE A SOCCER FIELD NOR DO WE HAVE VOLLEY BALL. WE DO HAVE PLENTY OF GANGS AND SHOOTING..LOTS OF DRUGS JUST RECENTLY IT WAS A BIG GANG FIGHT INSIDE PARK GYM.AT WASBANIA AND MCVICKER TWO WEEKS AGO WE HAD BIG GANG FIGHT.15 PEOPLES WAS ARRESTED.THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN AMUNDSEN PARK AREA DO NOT USE THE PARK BECAUSE OF GANGS.WE NEED A CHANGE.ANY BUT HER.

  • We appreciate your tireless efforts to make the community safer, Tom. Everyone in Galewood should thank you for that. Please never stop caring about safety or politics.

Who should you vote for in the 36th Ward Aldermanic race?

I'm voting for Gilbert Villegas because he has the experience, the professionalism and the commitment to the community that I think is necessary for the job. He didn't just get involved a year or two ago in anticipation of an election. He knows how to work with people to get things done and has experience managing large budgets and large projects. Check out this ABC7 video piece on his accomplishments that aired 3.5 years ago. http://youtu.be/Y3ae9dzH5Sg

Oak Park Economic Development Corp. names new director

Good news. OPEDC has a development director at long last, and he says he'll focus on Oak Park's "smaller business districts". North Avenue Zoning and Development Advisory Committee (NAZDAC) and North Avenue Neighbors Association of Oak Park (NANA-OP) look forward to working with Mr. Lynch on the revitalization of North Avenue.

Oak Park board candidates focus on neitghborhood business districts

Here's a story on the Village Board candidate forum last week. It was a good discussion, and it’s good that the 3 candidates are focusing on neighborhood business districts including North Avenue.

The story doesn't mention that the medical marijuana dispensary on North Avenue came up during the meeting. North Avenue Neighbors Association of Oak Park believes that residents' organizations should have been given a chance comment before the Board decided to allow dispensaries anywhere in Oak Park that meets state requirements. Hopefully, lack of opportunity to comment won't be an issue in the future.
