Rent a house or three bed apartment

Help! I was wondering I anyone know of a place in oakpark, forest park,Elmwood that is for rent. Home is underwater and I have to prepare that bank is taken it back. Two adults, one child and three pets. Thanks and God bless.

  • So true Nan1951. In addition, some landlords have had a bad experience
in the past with dogs that bark at anything or anyone, and a cat that
smelled up the apartment (good friend of mine now will not take a chance any longer. I do feel that pets and their owners are happier when they are not renting but own a home, but that is not always possible. Birds and exotic
fish probably fare better than a lively pet in an apartment.

  • Yes, Lisa. However, responsible pet owners can improve the image for everyone. I am eternally grateful to a senior landlord who gave me a chance in 1980 in the Brickyard neighborhood. I had a beautiful obedience trained and crated German Shepherd. I was the only person in the building with a dog. I lived there happily for ten years and the security that my older neighbors felt was immeasurable. We with dogs, have to prove ourselves each and every day!

Sayre School

I been receiving notifications of the Sayre school about how bad the principal is and how bad are the teachers since they allow bullying in the classroom setting. Is there any parents out there who agree to this? If it is I feel that Sayre kids parents should get together and speak out.

  • Can you please email my mom as well? There are a lot of issues specifically with eighth grade that my mom is trying to address. She's reached out to the principal multiple times and has gotten nothing.

One more thing. If you want a rallying point to start organizing parents, start going to LSC meetings and bring as many likeminded parents as you possibly can. Invite people to dinner before hand or drinks after. When I was on an LSC, trying to put pressure on our principal, there was nothing more discouraging than an empty meeting room, especially when I knew that there were people suffering.

Andolino, Walls endorse Graham

Though it's not mentioned in this article, it's also worth noting that Alderman Nick Sposato has endorsed Chris Taliaferro for 29th Ward Alderman.

Hopefully, the North Avenue Zoning and Development Advisory Committee (NAZDAC) will be able to continue carrying out its mission of North Avenue revitalization, whoever wins the runoff election and whatever changes may occur in the 29th Ward.

What are your thoughts on these developments?

  • I agree that voters should make up their own minds. If you haven't attended a candidate forum yet, there will be one this Thursday, 3/26, 6 PM at the Sankofa Center, and another one on Tuesday, 3/31, 6:30 PM at Austin Town Hall.

Barb, I feel the same way about the remap. I was not here for Banks, but I moved into the ward just in time to support Alderman Sposato in his runoff in 2011. His sign for committeeman was the first one I ever put up in my yard.

Think of the big picture though, the spirit the old 36th is alive in the new 38th and now we have a chance to spread our style of community engagement to the new 29th. This is happening because of our sheer voter turnout numbers and unwillingness to have our minds made up for us. That's a dangerous combination for any powerbroker.

Just remember that it took two cycles to get Alderman Sposato elected. You don't have to believe in any one candidate as much as you need to believe in your neighbors.

handyman recommendation

Does anyone know of a trustworthy, reliable person to handle minor repairs and maintenance who works in our area?

  • Art & Martha K. Galewood residents

We have used Hometown Handyman (in Oak Park, on Harlem just north of Chicago) for a few jobs and have been happy with the work. His wife owns Yuppie Puppy and Doggie Day Play, which are also well-run local businesses.

  • I have used hometown handyman as well. Very affordable and great work. Yuppie puppy has been my dog's groomer for seven years- she is absolutely the best!

  • Theresa J from Oak Park Commercial Real Estate Broker

Thanks, I was looking for a handyman for small jobs too.

North and Harlem TIF established to draw development to Elmwood Park

River Forest is moving ahead with its North Ave. TIF. They just hired a consultant to figure out what kinds of development to pursue.

Now Elmwood Park has established a TIF at North & Harlem. A Chicago TIF is planned for the North/Harlem project to include Mariano's. Will Oak Park be left behind again, as has occurred on Roosevelt Rd.?

Politicians pick sides in 29th ward alderman race

Here's another article on 29th Ward endorsements, from Pioneer Press/Chicago Tribune. This story doesn't mention any of Alderman Deborah L. Graham's endorsements, nor Ald. Nick Sposato's endorsement of Chris Taliaferro. In the article, poli sci prof (& former alderman) Dick Simpson opines that Mayor Emanuel's unpopularity with West Side African-Americans is working against Graham.
