Landlord Responsibility?

I contacted my landlord in February about the fact that my smoke detector doesn't work, and then again in March. I am still waiting for a new one. He lives in my building, so one would think he'd be a little more concerned about fire safety. I know it's the landlord's responsibility to provide a smoke detector and since it's only a few dollars, I could certainly go out and buy one, but I'd like to know what my rights are as a tenant and what actions I can take?

  • Wow. So very many responses! Thank you for all of them and I hope this hasn't caused anyone too much angst!

Wow. So very many responses! Thank you for all of them and I hope this hasn't caused anyone too much angst!
    1) I tried several sets of new batteries, back in Feb., because I change them every year. None of them made the smoke detector work, it was broken. Probably because I've lived in my apt for 13 1/2 years and this one came with the apt? (I think they have a life span of maybe 10 yrs.) Anyway, I emailed my landlord...back in February. He said he'd get me a new one.
    2) March rolled around...still no new smoke detector. I emailed him again, but got no response this time.
    3) He must be reading these posts because one suddenly appeared outside my door last night.
    4) I installed it.
    5) All should be happy! I am safe. My neighbors are now safe. Yes, it has a carbon monoxide aspect to it, though 2 yrs ago I bought my own since my apt. didn't have one, but let's not get into that.

Thank you for all your help!

Bathtub reglazing

Does anybody have a recommendation for a bathtub reglazing?

I used these guys in 2011. The tub still looks good. There are cheaper options out there. But, in my opinion, you get what you pay for. The low-priced options don't seem to last as long.

You just want to be careful what you use to clean it with. Some cleaners will damaged the finish. And obviously, don't drop anything that might chip it.

One tip: If your chrome drain looks bad/chipped, I would suggest removing it prior to having the bathtub reglazed, then replacing it.

    Good luck.

There’s a good selection of bars and restaurants along Clark St and Broadway St north and south of Diversey, but there are also a number of options along Diversey and nearby in the park.

Duffy’s Tavern, Pars Cove and Miss Asia are just a few of the venues you’ll find clustered along Diversey just west of 441 West Oakdale. The popular Yolk opened recently at Pine Grove and Diversey. Expect a wait for breakfast on weekends.

The #151 bus stops in front of the building and connects to the Loop via Michigan Ave. Other bus routes along Diversey and Broadway are a short walk from the building.

What was going on was that every month their charge went up by mere pennies, but last month the electric bill was about $30 more than it should be. This winter we all saw higher bills of course because of the brutal winter. If you are using Energy Plus, call ComEd and cancel it. If you are considering signing up, read the fine print and cancel as soon as you can after getting the miles....or better yet, learn from my mistake and steer clear and warn your friends.

lauren, that is unrelated/different though really, just to avoid the confusion it's not lumped as the same issue. This actually was a good deal, and there were no hidden fees for the duration. So the calculation and sites (CUB, etc) that talk about this would lead you to believe it was a savings--it was for me for over a year. The calculation in question for anyone having this issue would have been done a full year ago+ to be having this issue, then after that year they change the rates to variable. You could do the same calculation today and come up that Energy Plus had no hidden fees and that it was a better deal, but the issue is what happens after the 12 month period if/when it becomes variable.

East Lakeview parking spot wanted

Looking for a parking spot for summer around Lake Shore Drive & Addison.

  • lauren east lakeview republican

We live at LSD and Belmont and pay for garage valet parking. It's $225 a month but I find it's really worth it. I looked for cheaper garage parking and couldn't find any when we moved in.
If you find something that isn't just a single spot, please let me know!

  • Check out the "four plus one" buildings around you. They tend to rent their spots out to surrounding buildings at a lower price than free standing parking lots. I am south of Belmont and covered spots in those buildings go for about $180/month.

  • The New Yorker at Waveland and Lake Shore has monthly parking available. I think it's $200 or $250 a month.

Snack Shop near Driving Range: Will it open?

I miss its fish tacos. Does anyone know if it will be back in business this summer? Thanks!

  • That spot hasn't been the same since 1996...

  • Maybe, but still it would be nice to have a place to grab a drink or some picnic food on the lakefront. It seems hard to imagine that location, between Belmont & Diversey Harbors, wouldn't be a very profitable one - which is why I can't figure out how it could remain shuttered for going on two years now. Anyone know who to ask about this? The alderman? The City or Park District? Eater Chicago?

PPM Apartments - Separate Utility Bill from AUM

I tried to call PPM but was told I would need to touch base with AUM (the service that handles this new method of utility payment). Is there any way I can fight this? I suppose fight isn't the correct word, but I renewed my lease under the assumption the utility bill would be $50-$60/mo, not double that amount!

  • lauren east lakeview republican

Mike, I'm aware of the gas company offering a plan where you pay more in the summer for the winter months (I used to do it, though I wasn't a fan because I felt like I was paying HUNDREDS of dollars in the summer and still a good amount in the winter).
I realize I read the post wrong and this really has nothing to do with the utility companies :) My bad.

  • When my apartment came up for renewal with PPM last month, they asked for a 10% rent increase and the new AUM utility system, under which tenants pay for everything from sewage to trash removal, as with the above poster. (PPM's construction contractors use the dumpster, by the way...)

The result for me was a ~18% hike in rent and fees. I was frankly offended, especially since they claimed the utilities billing was part of an "Environmental Conservation program." The new price (for a 1 bdrm) was what I paid for a 2 bdrm w/ dishwasher across the street when I first moved to Lakeview three years ago.

I negotiated a slightly lower rent for a three month lease extension and will be finding a new place.

p.s. My AUM bill for the month was over $200.

Commercial fishing on lakefront around Belmont Harbor?

Last week I noticed a weird foam about 15 ft out on the water in an extensive ring. I asked a scientist friend who knows about such things. He said that the local fisherman have taken to the disgraceful practice of using fire extinguishers to push out 20 or more lines to catch fish and the foam is a result of the froth from the extinguishers.
Today I saw men dragging big carts of items such as extinguishers, various multi fishing lines, many large buckets and other equipment. etc over to the lakefront. Is this commercial fishing? What are they doing with the fish they catch? Are Lake Michigan fish being sold to local restaurants?

Give me a nice rod and reel setup, a couple of brews, and a 70 degree breezy day and I will take a nice fight from a scrappy fish. What happened to 'anglers'? :)

Anyhow, it isn't a guarantee that everyone is using only compressed air in the extinguishers. However, foam can come from multiple variables and sometimes is pretty normal, especially in the ocean harbors. Niagara falls is beautiful, til you get on the boat, look down and it looks like refuse from washing a bear with shampoo. If it's abnormal for that area (the foam) you can always find a resource to report it to.

As for these fishing methods, there are clear rules as to how many lines/poles per licensed person, how many hooks on each line, daily limit quantity and size, etc. In IL you can have 3 rods per angler and up to two hooks per rod. So technically one lure with two treble hooks constitutes two hooks. If they are toting around 100 hooks with 10 on each line, that's illegal, and if they are using shopping carts I HIGHLY doubt anyone you see is commercial. Commercial actually harvest in worse ways...

In WI, the DNR (dept. natural resources) handles these matters.
I would be more worried about the amount of hooks/lines per person than anything. People like that tend to be haphazard as well. Would be great for that kind of barbed wire to wash up on shore huh?

Ants!

It is spring and the ants have begun to march. In our experience last year, the little roundish traps didn't do enough. So, I think we need an exterminator. I'm okay with them doing what they need to do outside the house. But, I'm worried about the interior. I don't want the chemicals in the house and substances like vinegar don't seem to work well enough. Will hiring an exterminator just for the outside be sufficient? Any exterminator recommendations? Any ant removal recommendations?

Thanks

  • Steve Vance Thrice Decades on Melrose St.

Cinnamon eh? I'm giving this a shot in the next week as I get them from tiny crevices and cracks that sometimes sitting the Terro traps by is near impossible.

  • Patricia 25 Year Lakeview Resident

Important distinction: Carpenter ants--the big black ants--are like termites and very destructive. For them, I'd go with a professional exterminator. The little ants are an icky nuisance and can be dealt with by ant traps or cinnamon. Nievka, I love your description of a "tiny cinnamon wall."
