Explore the history of Soldier Field

Love it or hate it? Soldier Field has been at the center of Chicago's political, cultural, and sporting life since it opened in 1924. Come to a multimedia presentation documenting its history this Saturday April 19 at the Rogers Park Branch Library, 6907 N. Clark St., at 1 p.m. Liam A. T. Ford, a journalist for the Chicago Tribune, led the newspaper's reporting on the renovation of Soldier Field 2001-2003. In the process he completed his book Soldier Field: A Stadium and Its History. His presentation will show rare photos and documents unearthed in his research. The program is co-sponsored by the library and the Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society. The history of Soldier Field tells the story of Chicago!

Police response

It has been urged that the police should be called if you see a suspicious character. Today I called the police and alerted them of an unsavory character at Indian Boundary Park and the dispatcher told me the police were on their way. I was at the park for about two hours and no police arrived. This isn't the first time I called the police to report someone and they didn't show up. When I do call they act like I am bothering them.
Now start the sarcasm because you can't post anything without someone saying something sarcastic.

  • J.H. makes a very good point about having a service between 311 and 911. I think we all are concerned about activities we see as suspicious escalating into something dangerous. On the other hand, we just don't know what else the cops are coping with at any given time. I...

J.H. makes a very good point about having a service between 311 and 911. I think we all are concerned about activities we see as suspicious escalating into something dangerous. On the other hand, we just don't know what else the cops are coping with at any given time. I have listened to the police scanner from time to time, and I have to admit that the noise and drinking on the corner or in the alley that's driving me crazy is nothing compared to reports of shots fired or street fighting or other things that the cops have to respond to first. I think the cops in the 24th District do a great job overall and that they and the CAPS coordinators are approachable when we feel frustrated about what we sometimes see as the lack of or slowness of police response. I've never had the impression that it's all PR on their part but think that they genuinely want to address citizen concerns and improve where necessary.

This needs to be brought up at the beat meeting by neighbors.

FYI-OEMC sets the priority and dispatches the call based on what is going on at that exact moment. Officers don't get to pick and choose where to go next. They go where they are told to go via a priority response system managed by OEMC. Regardless, all calls should be answered.

I'll will bring this to the attention of the Dist 24 CAPS office.

Who are these people?

My security cam caught these guys in my foyer while I was indisposed on North Artesian near Devon, they were also on camera trying to open the basement door. Looking out the window I saw them up the street talking to children playing in front of their houses. Any idea what they're doing ringing doorbells trying to enter people's basements door to door?

And very fresh. It's an unassuming place with wonderful service and BYOB. I Love super casual places that serve amazing food and this is one of them. They have the BEST Crab Rangoon I have ever eaten. I am not sure what they do to it but I have never had anything like it. I went back a few days later with several of my friends and they got Thai, which they said was amazing. The prices are beyond reasonable and their hours are 11am-11pm everyday. Give it a try, you will NOT be disappointed. Carry-out, and a large delivery area also.

Inspector General: Chicago police underreported aggravated assaults, batteries in 2012

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-report-chicago-police-undercounted-shooting-victims-in-2012-20140407,0,4268508.story

Inspector General: Chicago police underreported aggravated assaults, batteries in 2012

Chicago police did not report about a quarter of the aggravated assault and aggravated battery victims in its crime statistics in 2012, an audit by the city's top watchdog found.

The department failed to follow state guidelines by counting each aggravated assault or battery as one incident, not each victim as it should have, leading to the underreporting because of all the incidents that involved multiple victims, according to the inspector general's office. (more)

SeeClickFix app

I have been using the SeeClickFix app pretty successfully for the past week or two to report graffiti and garbage and rats around the neighborhood. It's quick and easy. You snap a photo on your phone, your GPS plugs in the address for you (double check it near intersections or when you are moving), you answer a couple of quick questions, and off it goes to the correct city services department. I've had some successes .... and some disappointments, but it's a much faster easier way to report issues. I hope you will use it too.

Between the loud talkers, the folks on cell phones, and the kids playing video games on the adult computers, you can barely hear yourself think. If you come to the library to do any serious work, you have to compete with people who like to chat with friends while aimlessly web surfing, people who sit 2 and 3 to a computer, chatting all the while, and people who come in with laptops and chat away on loudspeakers, not to mention folks who constantly answer cell phone calls. Who are these people who can never be out of touch? Why can't people accept that if they go to the library they have to be quiet? The idea that 14 year old kids should be allowed access to the adult computers is ridiculous. They can't shut up, and won't no matter how often or how politely they're asked. The librarians do what they can, but it's another example of the barbarians taking over and everybody else being cowed into accepting their behavior because they just won't quit.

It's the nonstop cell chatter than drives me crazy, especially when I'm working on something that requires real concentration. For instance, the library's genealogical resources are great and I've been tracing my family--so far, all the way back to 1825 --when some awful ringtone comes on and a conversation starts. Once I was so startled by the ringer that I lost a connection to an ancestor who may have served in the Civil War, and then couldn't find it again. God give me patience--and do it right now!

Does the city plant trees anymore?

Several trees were cut down on our block due to disease and in every case the City left a notice inside the building advising the owner to call if a new tree was wanted. Unfortunately, we have a lot of absentee owners and I don't know if they ever saw the notices, since they were taped above the mailboxes and many of the owners don't come around much. The City seems to be very good about planting trees, and taking care of them after. We had a tree planted 4 years ago and City crews check it every spring.

Many nonprofits also get free water and free garbage pick-up. As far as the area west of California, for as long as various aldermen have called that area home it's been the first recipient of city services, like snow plowing and street cleaning. It's also exempt from disruptions like parades that always end at California. I think the area is cleaner not only because of the city services but also because it consists mostly of single-family homes and small apartment buildings that may be owner-occupied. The dirtiest areas east of California are those blocks with more apartment buildings than single-family homes. Many buildings belong to absentee owners or investors; these seems to be managed by property managers responsible for various buildings in all areas of the city, so no one property gets a lot of attention. I agree with Mary B. about the messiness of Devon: It would be much worse if the city didn't clean every day. That's a terrible reflection on the people who use the street and leave such a mess behind: the shoppers, drivers, and residents who dump and go. Even with trashcans on every corner it's impossible to keep the street clean because too many people are so dirty..

I think they have to pay for a portion. as long as certain things don't effect the pocketbook, resources will continue to be wasted.

If I were to hit him, I would be crucified as a villian. so what I am asking is...HOW IS THIS OK in very heavily trafficed places??

  • C

The guys lately are wearing matching gray t-shirts that say Volunteer on the back and something about veterans on the front. But they are the same beggars who've been there for years. At Lincoln/Peterson. Drivers who don't usually come thru that intersection can be easily fooled into thinking they are legitimately collecting for a charity. I'm pretty sure they are meth addicts from the sores all over their faces. Also the thin, short caucasian woman who works that intersection has sores all over her face.

  • Hopefully u called 911?

Video of the man engaging in sexually explicit activities with a young boy was discovered online in November 2012 by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), an organization that works closely with the Bureau to stop child predators.

....

The efforts to identify and apprehend John Doe 28 are part of the FBI’s Operation Rescue Me and Endangered Child Alert Program (ECAP) initiatives and represent a longstanding partnership with NCMEC. Operation Rescue Me identifies child victims of sexual exploitation by using sophisticated image analysis to obtain evidence. ECAP seeks public and media assistance to help identify the John and Jane Does who display their faces—and other distinguishing characteristics such as tattoos—in pornographic images and videos of children.

Since the inception of ECAP in 2004, 28 John/Jane Does have been investigated; 20 of these cases have been successfully resolved so far. These investigations have led to the identification of nearly 70 child victims.

We need your help. John Doe 28 appears to be a Caucasian male in his 30s or 40s who has a receding hairline and wears wire-framed glasses. Anyone with information should submit a tip online or call the FBI’s toll-free tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI.

“We need to identify John Doe 28,” Jurden said, “so we can make sure no harm comes to that little boy.”

I don't know if it's the tenants or the parkers who are doing this, but it's been happening every few weeks for about a year. Today there was a silver jeep parked out front. As usual, it's food garbage and it looks like the kind of stuff that piles up over a week or so in the car: paper plates, napkins, lots of coffee cups, cans, , food scraps, etc. The people who live in the building never pick this stuff up, which makes sense if they're the ones dropping it there. I'm going to file a report with the city again. I did so 2 weeks ago when I found several piles of garbage there and the inspector was out the next day. We'll never get the city's rat problem under control until we get the human pigs under control.

Kelli, I hate to see responsible people leave the neighborhood because of sanitation issues that the landlords fail to address. I also think it takes more than one neighbor to get management to respond to complaints. I used the City's online service to check on one particularly bad building. Check out the violations for the 6504 N Fairfield building here:
    https://webapps.cityofchicago.org/buildingviolations/violations/addressinfo.html
While picking up on Arthur yesterday I found food all around this building's dumpster and the dumpster open. I wonder if we can recruit others in the surrounding area who are concerned about this issue and ask for a meeting with the building department and the property manager. There may be a better response if the property manager knows that there's more than one person complaining. I also wonder if, in view of the ongoing problems with this building, the neighbors could ask the city to place the building in receivership.

  • Oops! I see the link doesn't work. But that's the place to go. Other things I found yesterday on various parkways included 2 broken chairs, a car bumper from an accident, and several full water bottles. I placed Sunday papers inside several buildings, and every one of them had security doors blocked open, one held with ties, a couple with blocks of phone books, etc. Scary.

I remember driving down california to home depot on the afternoon of 9/11& seeing cops leading little kids out of the couple of hebrew schools as no one knew what was going on. it was a sobering reminder to always be alert to your surroundings. i, too, take pictures of sacred places including tombstones & i think I would be taken-aback if anyone suspected me of something sinister. but these days..when the occasional swastika is still being spraypainted near synagogues, one can't really be too careful .glad sal was so forthright and understanding of the concern. muslims are still persecuted & suspect in chicago & absolutely in some of the burbs so religious intolerance is still alive & well sad to say. also glad that everyblock is still around so I would even know about this.
