Paco, thanks for your thoughts. The white haired lady that took my sisters pen and privacy folder at the registration table was the same one that scurried to the voting machine when my sister's ballot was rejected. Meanwhile, I reached the table at which point the Indian gentleman took the pen and the privacy folder, insisting that I leave it with him even though I questioned him. I reached the ballot box as you were "initialing" my sister's ballot then placed it in the machine. The same thing took place with me. Sorry if that was you Paco as I respect many things that you have to say and you appear to have integrity. I have voted for over 40 years and nobody has touched my ballot or "helped" me place it in the machine. Perhaps everyone was trying to be too helpful.

  • Paco 50thWardFollies.com

Please don't put initialing in quotes. That's what happened. If that was you I'm sorry it happened, too. And I'm going to take scurrying as a compliment. I wear a leg brace on long days and feel like a snail. In any case, I can assure you no harm was done, and if mistakes were made, and it sounds like they were, they weren't intentional. We're still EB friends. :)

Excitement in the 43rd

Congratulations to Caroline Vickrey, a West Ridge native, on her work to bring Michele Smith to a runoff! Throughout the city change is desperately needed and Lincoln Park is no exception. The hard work didn't stop on Tuesday though and I have faith that the 43rd Ward will get the alderman they deserve!

Lincoln Towing Scam

A friend parked his car at Winston Towers #3 guest parking lot last night around 8:30. A guest pass was taped to the front window. This morning his car was gone, towed by Lincoln. He had to pay $218 to get it back. His MP3 player and I-Pass and other property were untouched. One wheel was damaged, and part of the pass was left where he'd taped it.

When he filed the police report he was told that the same thing happened two days before to a woman in a private lot at Sheridan and Pratt.

Be careful out there. It appears Lincoln is still up to its old tricks.

What do you think could have damaged that tire?

  • Paco 50thWardFollies.com

No, he arrived later. The 6 a.m. was on the tow slip.

  • Herecomestheman Character assassin.

So your friend arrives after 6 and finds his car towed?I guess he should have followed the rules and moved it by 6. Pay up.

Weeks Later...Alley Blocked With Snow

There is a disaster waiting to happen in the alley behind O’Reilly Auto Parts/Eng’s Restaurant. I went down the alley last evening and was blocked by a full snow bank. I had to back out and turn. I believe this alley is the fire lane for all of the businesses there in Robin Realty’s plaza and the homes on Sherwin, and perhaps the townhomes on Campbell. This is also where the multiple garbage and delivery trucks go in and out. This plaza houses a restaurant, liquor store, laundry facility, supermarket (that cooks food), etc.

I considered calling this into the City of Chicago but it has been my experience that they are not responsible for alleys/parking areas. I have a feeling that the responsibility lies with Robin Realty. I haven’t had much luck with them in the past on other issues.

Shajan Kuriakose Never Voted in City Elections

Thanks to a FOIA request, it is now absolutely clear that not only does Shajan not live in the 50th Ward, he never voted for alderman in ANY ward and, in fact, never voted in any city election. The images are a bit fuzzy because they're copies, but the info is there.

WRPCO Candidates Forum

Four of the five candidates for alderman attended tonight's forum. Only the alderman didn't show up, instead sending a letter claiming that Ahmed Khan's personal endorsement of Shajan Kuriakose and the presence of write-in candidates Fuji Shioura and Peter Sifnotis precluded her appearance. Too bad for her. She missed a great evening.

All the candidates acquitted themselves well. Each proved to be well-informed, well-prepared, and armed with thoughtful analyses and opinions.

Some wards would be lucky to find one or two candidates of this caliber. We have four.

Thank you, Zehra, Shajan, Peter, and Fuji.

Who knows if the candidate will fail? At least you won't be voting for someone who has proven to us she's not up to the job. If Ms Silverstein were at a private company doing similar work she would have been fired years ago. Don't support inadequacy. Write-in Peter Sifnotis. Punch 53. Whatever you do, just don't keep voting for failure and expecting a different result. There's a cliché that describes that behavior and we heard it enough last fall, but there's a reason it's a cliché: because it's true. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

No, it's not a campaign stunt. She's been negotiating for the contract since 2014, and flew to Dubai to pitch West Ridge as the right location. If the business meets its growth goals, Zehra's factory could employ as many as 1,000 people in the next few years.

Positions will carry full benefits and on-the-job training. It's a good thing for West Ridge.

Debra Silverstein take undue credit? Indeed.

Debra Silverstein has taken credit for obtaining funds to build the educational garden at Armstrong school at 2110 West Greenleaf. Funding for this garden was obtained (well over $100,000) through a grant proposal to Openlands, a non-profit organization that funds projects which add green space to properties in Chicago. A group of teachers at Armstrong, along with parents, students and non-teacher staff members worked tirelessly, attending required planning meetings and professional development, in order to gain this funding. Her involvement was not required, or sought. Yet she has wrongfully misled the public in a full color. 8 1/2 x 11 mailer sent out 10 days ago.
Shame on you Debra Silverstein. Just because you need to sign a letter in order to release funds, doesn't mean you did much more than that--so you shouldn't represent it as such.

It will help me decide to whom my vote will go.

Apparently Ms Silverstein believes that allowing write-in candidates to speak makes a mockery of the democratic process (but knocking formidable challengers off the ballot isn't, apparently).

My personal endorsement for 50th Ward Alderman:

Dear fellow 50th Ward neighbors,

My name is Ahmed Khan and I am a lifelong 50th Ward resident. I grew up in the ward, went to a local school, played in the local parks, and my family has run a business in the ward for 25 years. You may remember, I ran for 50th Ward Alderman in the previous 2011 municipal election on a platform of increasing community involvement and bringing accountability to this office. I ran on a platform stating that we need a “grassroots” Alderman, one that understands the full diversity of the 50th Ward and properly engages the different aspects of the community.

I strongly believe that Shajan Kuriakose will be the “grassroots” Alderman that we have been looking for. After carefully observing all the candidate’s agendas, I feel that Shajan has been the one that best aligns with the vision I ran with.

Shajan believes in:

· Closing loopholes that allow elected officials to violate rules without facing any accountability
· Strategically reinvesting available city funds back into our neighborhoods and our schools
· Stopping the city's scandal-plagued red light camera ticketing program
· Advocating for an increased police-presence to ensure safety for our families and for our businesses
· Fighting to reopen the city's mental clinics that treat our most vulnerable

We had hoped for change in the 50th Ward back in 2011, but true change is still long overdue. I am voting for Shajan Kuriakose because he will put people before politics.

See attached image for full letter and references.

The letter she sent in her place also said she didn't want to appear with write-in candidates. What a crock! She couldn't handle an audience of residents who would be asking serious, pointed questions. By being inclusive, the WRPCO forum gave residents a real opportunity to hear from ALL the candidates. Debra does best with glossy mailers full of half-truths and outright lies and in controlled interviews that are closed to the public. She's a poor excuse for a candidate as well as an alderman.

I endorsed Shajan as a 50th ward resident. The write-ins deserved to be there as they are certified by the Board of Elections. It is democracy. I think Alderman Silverstein's reason for lack of attendance is an unacceptable excuse, especially when close to 60 residents came out on a cold night to listen to the candidates.

All the candidates were given the questionairres pre event equally and were explained rules at the pre forum meeting. There was no unfair advantage any candidate could have possibly gotten due to anything at the venue."

Latest round of dibs heads to scrap heap Friday, Feb 13, 2015

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-city-hall-latest-round-of-dibs-heads-to-scrap-heap-friday-20150211-story.html
City crews this week will begin tossing the household flotsam and jetsam that Chicagoans have been using to try to call dibs on parking spots since a blizzard dumped over 19 inches of snow on the area earlier this month.

The Department of Streets and Sanitation will start removing the plastic chairs, dresser drawers and anything else they find on the street as soon as Friday, starting with streets where people have called 311 to complain about dibs, according to a city news release.

I don't hate cars... I hate self-entitled people who think that they somehow "own" a public parking space just because they were fortunate enough to be able to park their own cars in these spaces to begin with. And, on a street of large multi-family buildings, you are lucky to get a space do begin with and you surely have no proprietary claim on it just because you shoveled out your own car. I also hate unsightly junk all over the street, and that a casual visitor to the area who might take the space for a few hours at most, risks getting his car iced or trashed for taking a space some greedy person feels is his own just because he shoveled his own car out of it.

A man was found dead inside a building that burned early Sunday in Chicago's West Rogers Park neighborhood that left at least one other man critically hurt, officials said Monday night.

The victim, a male whose name was not immediately known, was dead on the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. The body will be examined Tuesday. The Chicago Fire Department also said the victim is a man.

About 3:25 a.m. Sunday, firefighters were called to the 1900 block of West Devon Avenue on the Far North Side after a fire broke out in a 2½-story residence on the block, said Fire Chief Joe Roccasalva at the time.

At least one man, who was in his 60s, was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Presence St. Francis Hospital in Evanston after Chicago police officers rescued him from the building, according to police and fire officials.

Soon after crews arrived, the fire was raised to a still and box alarm, and firefighters took a defensive position after flames broke through the building's roof.

The fire was struck out just before 6:15 a.m., Roccasalva said. Crews remained to deal with hot spots from the fire.

Other people inside the building when the fire started were evacuated, Roccasalva said.

Rogers Park District police said Monday night that the buidling is considered a crime scene and the police Bomb and Arson Unit and the Fire Department's office of investigation is looking into its cause.
