Mute - many Americans can't afford to live on social security plus savings; they are forced to continue working as long as they are physically able. Others just enjoy working.

There's an elderly gentleman at clark and touhy who is a crosswalk guard. Where he started two (three?) Years ago, for the first two months, his wife would come with him and watch from their van. She always looked worried sick. I always feel bad for the guy I can't imagine he's doing it for enjoyment.

  • Some older people like to stay active and enjoy working. From what I understand, she liked working as a crossing guard (and has for 30 years). She always showed up early and stayed late. She’s a kind woman who genuinely cares about the kids and knows many of them by their names. As a parent with a child at that school, we’re lucky to have her as our crossing guard. This is a terrible tragedy and we’re all hoping she recovers.

working as a crossing guard includes working in some horrendous weather conditions. Crossing guards have to be dedicated to withstand those conditions. Having said that i am not sure the employer is making the right decision to hire a 80 year old - the weather conditions alone put an 80 year old at great risk -not to mention the problems associated with standing in the street. Red lights and no turn on right and strong enforcement of school speed limits (including expanding the school zone area) are needed. I pray for this crossing guards recovery - this is a serious event at her age. So sad. I suspect the driver is devastated.
