Jim I think you miss the point of giving info about the U of C Oriental Institute on this thread, which was that people here are using oriental to refer to Asians, like Chinese. Do you think of Middle Easterners as 'orientals'? However, I also wonder why the Oriental Institute keeps that name. It's likely tradition, and their website notes that the 'name hasn't been changed since its founding'.Tomorrow I'll probably see my friend who works there and will ask him what he sees as the reason for using an antiquated name. BTW Merriam Webster dictionary says this about 'oriental': or Oriental : "of, relating to, or coming from Asia and especially eastern Asia oriental food oriental art —now sometimes considered offensive especially when used to describe a person"

I had posted a comment saying that Mute was correct, the quote I hadn't found was in an article I had posted. For some reason that didn't show up on my feed. I also noted that I was going off this thread. I've avoided muting Mute because I know that she/he wants that and I do agree with him/her on a few things. But might as well get away from this time killing 'discussion'. I hope to meet some of you in person some time.

  • Jill H, I agree with some of your information and inferences, although not all and that may be due to looking at the same "Thing", from diametrically opposite points of view.

I also agree that we should plan to meet up in person one of these days, because discussions like this, can go off-track pretty quickly, due to "stuff lost in translation" & responses in no certain order.

Yep. You can sit in jail and lose your job without even pulling a gun on someone. And you can commit battery black someones eye and a chicago judge will let you off the hook because someone said something you dont like. I know first hand as i have a scar on my face from a guy busting my eye open and the judge let him off saying i instigated it by returning an insult after i was insulted. By the way i am a woman and was a petite one at the time. This guy was a big one. Anyway bet this woman wont have the same experience i had. We dont even know if she was assaulted. But yea people shouldnt instigate if they dont want it turned back.on em cuz we cant rely on the courts to be fair.
