After the State of Washington legalized recreational marijuana there was a doubling of the relatively low number of traffic fatalities involving marijuana. But in two thirds of those cases there also was the presence of alcohol and/or illegal drugs. It couldn't be proven that marijuana was a key cause of those crashes but it is likely that marijuana was at least one contributor. So far it is clear that the number of alcohol related traffic fatalities far exceeds the relatively small number associated with only marijuana. Unlike with alcohol and illegal hard drugs, there are no data to suggest a link between the legalization of recreational marijuana and spikes in the numbers of violent or other crimes. In fact Denver saw a 2.2 percent drop in violent crime rates in the year after the first legal recreational cannabis sales in Colorado. Overall property crime dropped by 8.9 percent in the same period there, according to figures from the Drug Policy Alliance. In the State of Washington, violent crime rates dropped by 10 percent from 2011 to 2014. Voters legalized recreational marijuana there in 2012. good neighbor's concerns, though understandable, are not supported by any evidence. http://www.livescience.com/54693-high-drivers-double-after-marijuana-legalization.html . https://thinkprogress.org/sessions-legal-pot-violent-crime-8640413ca090

I remember interviewing a cop back in California a decade ago, and asking whether pot was a factor in many car accidents. He immediately said no, that alcohol was by far the more dangerous drug. Alcohol gives people false confidence, whereas pot slows people down... he said he was far more likely to find a pot smoker going too slow in the slow lane than causing any crashes.

Rogers Park Welcomes First Avocado Store

Ever since he was a young boy, growing up in Nigeria, Augustine Emuwa enjoyed a daily treat: eating avocados. Now, years later, Mr. Emuwa is bringing his life’s joy to Rogers Park – by opening the first ever store dedicated exclusively to his favorite food. Insert photo. Located on the corner of Touhy and Clark, in a former law office serving mostly a Latino clientle, Mr. Emuwa’s store features a full array of items, all made from his favorite fruit. Fruit? Mr. Emuwa eagerly explains: “You might be inclined to call it a vegetable, thanks to its green hue and savory taste, but the avocado is technically a fruit, and even more specifically, a single-seeded berry.” Emuwa continues. “People don’t realize the variety of things one can do with avocados. Avocado chips. Avocado fries. Bacon, lettuce and avocado sandwiches. Come in for breakfast and try our delicious avocado omelets!” Pointing at his new pizza oven, Emuwa face brightens with his newest offerings: “And people are going to love our avocado pizzas! They’ll never want tomato based pizzas again!” In cooperation with Gale Math & Science Academy (1631 W. Jonquil), Emuwa is using the school’s renowned 3rd floor garden and green space as a research lab, with impressive results. At Gale’s green space, two of Emuwa’s sales clerks, Tonia Andreina and Shapree Mallory, both of whom are also biologists experienced in genetic modification, are changing the culinary world with their latest discovery: orange avocados. “We think orange avocados will help stimulate sales” says Ms. Andreina. “Many kids simply aren’t drawn to foods that are green.” [where: ]

Rogers Park Builders Group Hosts 14th Annual Trends in the Industry Workshop

The Rogers Park Builders Group's Trends in the Industry Workshop, our 14th annual, is our organization's premier (and, with the exception of Friday Happy Hour, most enjoyed) meetings of the year, where 80 - 100 real estate and community folks gather to discuss and debate a range of questions concerning local, regional and national real estate trends, projecting outcomes in two years' time. We assign one moderator to each table who guides the discussion and gathers consensus on seven separate questions. Following the group discussion, each of the table's moderators will participate in a panel discussion where we learn each table's consensus on each of seven questions - issues like Dow Jones, unemployment figures, interest rates, rental rates, the condo market, value of multifamily properties...
