Washtenaw. The Alderman acknowledged Burroughs as a leading school within CPS as part of the "Best Performing Network". The Alderman stressed the importance of expanded funding as the majority of students are low income. The majority Latino student base is high performing yet struggle with supplies and the Digital Divide. The visit from Senator Durbin comes at an important time as Alderman Cardenas continues to fight for support of the TIF Fund Surplus agreed to on the eve of the October 2016 Chicago Teachers Union strike. The Alderman's data analysis of TIF funds unearthed multiple means to expand funding beyond the original ordinance. The Alderman is asking for the TIF Fund Surplus to be supplemented with the $100 million that is still being withheld from the students of CPS that can cover expenses to keep schools open beyond June 1st
