‘Out of Space’ concert series to celebrate SPACE’s 10th anniversary

“Out of Space” will culminate in a “Big Evanston Block Party” August 25-26, which will take place in front of SPACE on Dempster Street and Chicago Avenue, Mitchell said.

'Out of Space' concert series to celebrate SPACE's 10th anniversary
When SPACE first opened in Evanston in 2008, they had little more than a card table for a bar, Kristen Mitchell said. Ten years later, SPACE is organizing a summer concert series to celebrate a decade of live music. Mitchell, manager of music operations and creative services at SPACE, said the "Out of Space" concert...

Rebirth Brass Band carries the torch of New Orleans brass band music while pushing the genre forward

Sat 6/23, 6 PM, Temperance Beer Co., 2000 Dempster, Evanston, $30

Rebirth Brass Band carries the torch of New Orleans brass band music while pushing the genre forward
In a sense, New Orleans brass band music is much like acappella doo-wop. The better practitioners of either style can make you forget you're listening to a wordless art form where the music does the talking. On the Louisiana home turf of the Rebirth Brass Band, that legacy is something to be taken seriously.

Geneva property owner says don't blame location

No registration or paperwork is required to participate, and the Sack Lunch Program, which started last week, is offered from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Aug. 15 at Redeemer Fellowship Church, 1125 Oak St. in St. Charles.

Geneva property owner says don't blame location
Every time he hears or reads someone saying the location at 524 W. State St. in Geneva has made it difficult for restaurant operators at that site, David Wagenaar of Plan C Properties likely senses his blood pressure rise a bit.

The neon-lit bar at Lawrence and Broadway, now a legendary jazz club, has been around for 107 years—and has more stories than any tavern in town. Here are a few from the past three decades.

The weekend's best blues beyond the fest
This year Chicago seems to be hosting fewer extracurricular blues events during Blues Festival week than it has in the past. It's too soon to decide that audiences have gotten complacent, though-and you can still find plenty of worthwhile shows. The city's blues clubs kick into overdrive during the fest, of course (see the Reader's listings for more on them).
