  • NikkiS Special education teacher, mama, reasonable human

Eric- as someone who teaches special education, I think her description is spot on. The benefits listed are backed by research. Parallel teaching is one way teachers manage to reach 30+ students with different needs. I hope her goal is met quickly so her students can begin next school year with a new learning space.

  • Hi Eric,
Please feel free to come to Bateman Elementary and see what we do and why teachers write Donor's Choose grants (for example writing a grant for a rug), our doors are always open. Also if you have any questions on how CPS and the state of IL have chosen to continually cut funding for special educational services, or any advice on how else to teach and separate a class where 13/26 students have state mandated special needs please let me know.
    Thank you!

  • Donor's Choose only allow grant writers to request materials from a list of specific websites, cheaper options for rugs may not be an option. I love when people who don't work in schools assume we are frivolous spenders :) I best be going now, i'm going to go blow our entire school budget on 29 gigantic continent carpets!

I want to chime in about high schoolers getting part-time jobs. Some of them have part time jobs and the money is theirs to spend. Some of them who have jobs are working to help support the family. Some of them cannot get jobs because they are needed at home to care for younger siblings while their parents work. Some of them maybe can get jobs but have chosen not to. I would assume this teacher knows the needs of her students better than the rest of us and that any donation you might make is needed and will be appreciated.
