Bicyclist in critical condition after hit by car in West Town

Bicyclist in critical condition after hit by car in West Town
CHICAGO -- A bicyclist is in critical condition after a crash in the city's West Town neighborhood. Police say a Lexus sedan hit the cyclist at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday near Ogden and Racine. Witnesses say the cyclist was using a crosswalk at the time. The driver stayed at the scene.

Anders, I agree with every caution you gave, but I would like to add:

Dear bicycle riders, please don't run red lights and blow through stop signs when there are other moving vehicles of any kind or pedestrians in the area. (If there is no cross traffic of cars or bikes, no other vehicles with right of way turning into your path of travel, and no pedestrians trying to cross at the light, and you have stopped or slowed substantially enough to verify this, then go if you want but not before that). Don't go from the street to the sidewalk and back to avoid traffic. Cars will not be expecting you to suddenly appear in the street. Don't ride against traffic or between lanes of moving traffic. Use hand signals when in traffic. It takes a car (or truck) much longer to slow down than it does a bicycle. Don't ride in the dark, especially in dark clothing, without a light or something reflective because you will be invisible to traffic until they are almost on top of you. Don’t text or surf on your phone in traffic.

I hear bicyclists say all the time that they put nobody but themselves at risk when they do these things, but that's b.s. I have seen and been involved in many near accidents caused by cyclists doing these things, such as- near misses with pedestrians, many of whom were children; reckless riding causing drivers to swerve dangerously to avoid hitting them putting other riders, drivers and pedestrians in harm’s way. And, yes, I have seen and been involved in MANY MORE near accidents caused by drivers of cars, but you are far more vulnerable on a bicycle than in a car, and pedestrians are even more vulnerable than cyclists.

The key to safety is predictability all around. If everyone on the road knows what others are going to do, they can all act safely and with respect for each other.

  • RIP and condolences to the family if the Sun Times report is accurate.
