Gunman owed money to victim fatally shot in July: Prosecutors

Michael Pelko, 37, of the 8100 block of Rosemere Court in Willow Springs, is charged with first-degree murder in the July 20, 2017, slaying of Izat Morrar. who was found shot in the head in the 5300 block of Calumet Avenue, prosecutors said.

Video surveillance showed Morrar leaving work near the 100 block of West Adams Street not long after noon the day of the shooting. He later entered his apartment and later left with a backpack, prosecutors said.

More than a dozen police vehicles and even more officers swarmed the rear of an apartment building near the 6100 block of South Calumet around 3:30 p.m.

A Chicago police officer discharged their weapon and one person was hit in the 6100 block of South King Drive around 2:30 p.m., said Mia Sissac, a spokeswoman for the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), who was citing preliminary information.

Activists repurpose newspaper box into food depository in Bronzeville

An old newspaper box at 51st Street and Calumet Avenue in Chicago now holds free nonperishable food for the neighborhood.

    The red-and-white newspaper box once held editions of the Frederick News-Post, a local newspaper for a northern Maryland county of the same name. Now 650 miles away, the box resides in a garden on the southeast corner of Calumet Avenue and 51st Street.

Hammond police investigating after student reportedly assaulted teacher at high school

The alleged assault occurred between about 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., after classes had ended, on Nov. 13 inside the high school in the 5900 block of Calumet Avenue, said Lt. Steve Kellogg, Hammond police spokesman.
