Serpentwithfeet makes queer, vibrating R&B that sounds like nothing else on earth

Sun 7/1, 8:30 PM, Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western, $14

Serpentwithfeet makes queer, vibrating R&B that sounds like nothing else on earth
Serpentwithfeet's recently released debut album, Soil (Secretly Canadian), is essentially one long, ecstatic warble. The R&B singer-songwriter genius also known as Josiah Wise sings with the most pronounced vibrato this side of Tracy Chapman; when he multitracks his high tenor and falsetto vocals such as on "Wrong Tree," the result is an ocean of shimmering, yearning ululation.

Vision Zero traffic safety program battles deadly driving culture
Chicago's Vision Zero traffic safety program has its one-year anniversary Tuesday, and the results are hard to judge. On one hand, the city has made numerous safety fixes, including lowering the speed limit on part of Milwaukee Avenue and finishing 90 different pedestrian-focused projects last year, such as building "refuge islands" on busy streets.

I went to the first one in 1980, when I worked in the Loop--I don't recall how much it cost except it was much cheaper, you could try a bigger variety before you either filled up or ran out of tickets, and much of what was there was unique. Great lunchtime alternative to the ubiquitous Loop cookie-cutter Greek "coffee shop" luncheonettes. On the last day I remember I had a 25-cent ticket remaining, it was warm out, and one of the vendors didn't want to cart perishables back. So I got a flat of 12 containers of strawberry Yoplait (a brand and style new to Chicago, which had only Dannon at the time), put it in the office fridge, and drove it home after work. (But to this day I can't stand strawberry yogurt),

Nowadays, I go only when my knees can take standing around for hours and there's a musical act I want to go see. You have to jockey for a table to put your food & drink down while you stand, nearly half the items are fast-food from well-known restaurants available across the area year-round; and there are those stupid tickets! You can't buy only as many as you want, because the booklets contain odd quantities that are too few or too many. I end up either forgoing something I'd really wanted, compromising and eating something I wasn't really craving, or having leftover scrip to languish in a drawer (not knowing if they'd be usable next year) or to give to strangers. Last time we went (to see the Chieftains), so few items appealed to us that we actually ended up at a real restaurant in Millennium Park with normal portions, tables & chairs, metal utensils, glasses and servers. And we spent no more than had we eaten the same quantity of food standing up, spilling stuff on our clothes and sweltering,

Sen Morimoto broadens and brightens the corners of Chicago hip-hop with Cannonball!
Chicago hip-hop thrives and continues to be special because of people like rapper, singer, saxophonist, and producer Sen Morimoto. Born in Kyoto, Japan, Morimoto grew up in western Massachusetts, where he learned to play saxophone under the tutelage of Charles Neville of the Neville Brothers, and during his teenage years he joined the brazen outre hip-hop collective Dark World.

The Sea and Cake weather major shifts to produce another jewel of glistening guitar pop, Any Day

The Sea and Cake weather major shifts to produce another jewel of glistening guitar pop, Any Day
Last week the Sea and Cake released its 11th album, Any Day. The record embodies a simmering cool, which is demonstrated in the elegantly crystalline guitar lattice sketched out by Archer Prewitt and singer Sam Prekop-whose vocal lines have never sounded more sweetly aspirated-and also serves as an impressive assertion of commitment.
