Daymaker makes sloppy punk For Chicago

Tue 12/19, 8:30 PM, Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western $7

Daymaker makes sloppy punk For Chicago
"Condos are killing my country / my city gets nothing / burning like a rash from my undies / my city gets nothing," Erin Delaney warbles before unleashing her full-throttle yowl on "Condos," the anti-gentrification single Chicago's Daymaker's released in June. The band comes staggering in, sloshing loose feedback wails around the song's can't-get-it-out-of-your-head indie-pop hook.

Dreamy post-punk trio Dehd celebrate the release of two records in one

Fri 12/15, 9 PM, Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western, $8

Dreamy post-punk trio Dehd celebrate the release of two records in one
One of the best local releases of 2016 was the debut self-titled tape from Dehd on the prolific Maximum Pelt Records. The trio of guitarist-vocalist Jason Balla (of Ne-Hi and Earring), bassist-vocalist Emily Kempf (of Heavy Dreams and Veil), and stand-up, cymbal-less drummer Eric McGrady explored dreamy, hazy postpunk with beautiful vocal interplay; simple, plunky guitar; and a dark, behind-the-beat throb.

The Third Coming of the Jesus Lizard
The Jesus Lizard are back . . . again. Chicago's great 90s noise-rock agitators made their first return to the stage in 2009, ten years after splitting up. Their original label, Touch and Go, accompanied that reunion with Inch-a Record Store Day exclusive that repackaged remastered versions of all nine Jesus Lizard seven-inches it had released.

Katie Von Schleicher sweetens the disappointment in her lyrics with honeyed melodies

Sun 12/10, 9 PM, Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western, $15

Katie Von Schleicher sweetens the disappointment in her lyrics with honeyed melodies
There's an elliptical quality to the lyrics on Katie Von Schleicher's terrific full-length debut, Shitty Songs (Ba Da Bing). She assays various strains of romantic and personal disconnect, using words to underscore frayed connections and muddied communication, but her honeyed, soulful vocals and the rich arrangements that surround them fill out the otherwise moody pictures with dazzling color.

Back from hiatus, macabre indie band the Black Heart Procession plays its debut album in its entirety
Have you ever been to San Diego?! It's not remotely macabre, not a lick. Yet somehow America's Finest City birthed the Black Heart Procession, an eclectic, mutating orchestra of woe whose solemn, gently writhing indie rock (complete with rapt saw playing) has led to a modestly successful decade-plus career.

Jessica Lea Mayfield moves beyond an abusive relationship with a defiant new album

Thu 11/9, 9 PM, Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western, $15

Jessica Lea Mayfield moves beyond an abusive relationship with a defiant new album
Ohio-bred singer-songwriter Jessica Lea Mayfield has made it hard to know just who she is musically. Over the course of four albums she's reinvented her sound, stumbling between country, soul, hard rock, and boilerplate indie rock. Her diminutive voice-a small, fragile warble-has been the consistent element, but it exhibits a chameleonic effect that seems defined by the musical arrangements.

Young Thug kicks off Red Bull Sound Select's '30 Days' concert series
On the first day of November, Young Thug led off Red Bull Sound Select's "30 Days in Chicago" concert showcase with a banger. The notoriously tardy rapper-no shots, but he missed his set at Chance the Rapper's Magnificent Coloring Day last September-arrived basically on time and played to a ravenous, sold-out Metro crowd for a little more than an hour.
