After girl drowns in Lake Michigan, petition seeks extended lifeguard hours

After girl drowns in Lake Michigan, petition seeks extended lifeguard hours
CHICAGO - An online petition is seeking extended lifeguard hours in Chicago after a 13-year-old girl died in Lake Michigan last week. Darinanne Torres, 13, was swimming with friends at Loyola Beach about 7:30 p.m. Friday when she and another girl, 14, were caught by a rip current.
    http://wgntv.com

  • whats the point of this? there were numerous warnings not to swim.
bring back the lifeguards til 830, then someone ignores the rip current and drowns anyway at 11.

  • d3 NoHo

Hey get out of here with that kinda logic... These kids started a movement!

We were not in the position to restore the library hours cut in 1992. However, we tried to find a way to keep our neighborhood library relevant. They were a popular attraction and were heavily used.
Alderman Moore’s office contributed computers that were made into learning stations. Students can learn to type and be drilled on basic arithmetic. Though these were not the state of the art PCs, their useful life was extended and well used by students of all ages.
As the lead organization of a city-wide coalition, the Friends of the Rogers Park Library successfully campaigned to restore the library hours in 1993 and Mary Dempsey was appointed Library Commissioner in 1994. She made it a priority to connect the Chicago Public Library to the Internet. When we opened on June 8, 1999, in a new facility, it had six top of the line desktops connected to the Internet. The Chicago Public Library for many more users was their only on-ramp to the Information Superhighway.
Unfortunately, branch library hours were again cut back in 2010 during the last economic download. Though our branch library still has shorter hours, we now have 24 PCs connected to the Internet, 12 on the Adult side, and 12 on the children’s side. We even have Cyber Navigators, funded by the Chicago Public Library Foundation to assist those who are using computers for the first time, and for those who need reminders on their lessons. There is even a scanner that will copy your old photos and documents into a jpg file, and for a small fee print copies.
Join the Friends of the Rogers Park Library and help keep our library relevant.

I get close and personal with Cassie as her sister Moxie and owner Agilson Lorencini look on at my 4th annual 49th Ward Community Pet Day. The City of Chicago's Department of Animal Care and Control was on hand to provide low-cost vaccines, microchips and Chicago dog registration. Local vendors and animal welfare organizations were also present to provide $5 nail trims, free dog tags and a range of pet accessories.

Comcast to end hyperlocal site EveryBlock, agrees to send users to rival Nextdoor
Comcast is pulling the plug on EveryBlock, the Chicago-based hyperlocal news site it revived four years ago. The website, which features blurbs about restaurant closings, building break-ins and community events, will go dark July 19, with a link steering EveryBlock users to sign up with Nextdoor, a rival hyperlocal platform.

Nextdoor requires "somewhat real names" but they are -not- all "real names". Everyblock was not at all perfect, but I will still miss it. The news aggregation was occasionally laughable, but it did start some useful discussions that might not have been started by a neighborhood poster, especially since the "neighborhoods" are defined much too tightly. I have had a Nextdoor ID since the previous time Everyblock was about to die, but I rarely used it or even checked it, since I have personally found only a few useful posts, mixed in with many things Everyblock would consider advertising.

  • I did learn a lot about local politics and gained a new perspective about our elected officials. That has definitely been an eye opener.

Do you need a valid government photo ID regar...

Do you need a valid government photo ID regardless of your immigration status? I am partnering with Chicago City Clerk Anna Valencia and Centro Romero to offer Rogers Park residents a free Chicago CityKey ID Card next Tuesday, July 17th, 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m., at St. Jerome’s Church Parish Center, 1709 W. Lunt (at Paulina). The CityKey Card is an optional, officially recognized government-issued identification card that you can use to access a range of public and private services. It is designed to reduce barriers to those who have difficulty accessing traditional government-issued identification, such as undocumented immigrants, youth, the homeless, transgender residents, domestic violence survivors, and those recently released from incarceration. The Program’s goals have since grown to include discounts and other benefits for all of Chicago’s 2.7 million residents. This means that not only does the Chicago CityKey give Chicagoans the dignity and peace of mind that comes with having a government-issued ID, but it also serves as your key to Chicago– serving as your library card, Ventra card and benefits card for cultural institutions, sports teams and local businesses. For more information on the CityKey program, including the documents you will need to obtain the card, visit: https://www.ward49.com/news/get-your-free-citykey-id-card-next-tuesday-at-st-jeromes-parish-center/

Goodbye

it is proven again - bad companies fail. Moderators who supported attacks by certain individuals caused a drop in readership and the demise of this service. I hope moderators have learned a valuable lesson as they move to other employment.

No more attacks -Hooray.

Could someone please suggest an authentic and not mediocre Mexican restaurant?

Having trouble finding a good Mexican restaurant in the RP area?
I am forced to go to the ones I'm familiar with that are authentic on Lawrence, Kedzie and elsewhere, like Big Wig tacos and burritos on LaSalle and Chicago Avenue ! I just would like a local Taco and not have to travel far.

THANKS RP citizens !

  • GaToR Cherokee I am a comedian, actor, singer

Edgewater tacos better be very fresh if they charge in a astounding $375 + $275 / taco !!

  • Jeffrey Littleton If you can't be a poet, be the poem.

It's south of RP but Carmela's on Lawrence just west of Broadway makes the best carnitas tacos around.

  • Kilmer Elementary School reviewed by a parent

My child has just completed her third year at Kilmer, 2nd grade, and I could not be happier with the education she is receiving or prouder to send her there. It is our neighborhoods school, so she gets to know the kids who live around us kids who speak over 50 different languages at home and who come from all over the world. The principal and assistant principal have been there 6 years, and have been working like crazy to turn the school around it has a bad reputation from before they got there (if my kid were 3 years older, she wouldn't be there) but I took a look and they are doing amazing things. They are on a mission to give students a stellar education. This was the first year my child took the MAP test and she showed continual improvement; I am confident that she will be able to compete with kids from richer districts when the time comes, but in the meantime, she is learning academics and more. The school has an exciting arts program, a strong focus on restorative justice, and cultivates respect and appreciation for all kinds of diversity religious, racial, cultural, gender (including for nonbinary & trans), sexuality, language, ability.... it is a supportive environment for all kids. Soon all of the eighth graders will be taught algebra as standard curriculum, and several of the seventh graders just took it and nailed the standardized algebra test. With regard to special ed, the principal used to run special ed for the district and knows how to prioritize special ed funding and make sure kids get their minutes of 1 on 1 time while still being challenged and educated with the general ed students to an appropriate extent. The school has a full time health clinic, which has helped not just with health and attendance, but academic performance as well. There is a group of parents and community members working to start raising outside funds in an attendance area where not a lot of people have money to spare. I HIGHLY recommend Kilmer, but don't take advice from the internet go during the school year and take a tour. I know a lot of kids who go to a lot of different kinds of schools, and I am thrilled to send my child to Kilmer and to be part of the Kilmer community.

  • Kilmer Elementary School reviewed by a parent

My child has been at Kilmer for three years and we have been very happy with the quality of the education she has received as well as the way the administration is working really hard to make this school a great neighborhood school for all the students it serves. It has had a troubled past but it is really worth considering if you are in the neighborhood, as it is greatly changed from what it was under the previous principal.
