Summer 2018: The Lighthouse at The End of The World

Summer 2018: The Lighthouse at The End of The World
If you take the Red Line north to Loyola and walk a few blocks down Sheridan, dodging through the crowds of students and bums that populate the street at all hours, you will come to a residential street, Pratt. Turn east and walk up two more dark blocks to what appears to be a dead-end street.

The transit system is so extremely vital to the health of the city, financially, culturally, for reducing road congestion. So why is it so hard for the city to understand the need for more security, not more cameras with nobody watching but real security performed by real personnel in real time?

One transit officer for every 2 stations, riding between the two, walking the platforms and station houses would provide real security, let security be the surprise rather than insecurity as it now. This crime was certainly a surprise of insecurity.

How many transit security guards would that mean for this to happen? To make the transit system what it can be? There are 145 stations, divide in half, lets say 80 granting more security to busier stations like Roosevelt. 3 shifts per day would mean 240 officers for a 5 day week, round it up to 300 for weekends, vacation leave, etc.

That is what it would take, about 300 guards, more cameras are just extra at this point.

I used to live in east Rogers in the 90s. It was super shady back then, but rent was cheap; you could get a studio for $300 easy. I'd say that the makeup of the neighborhood was basically gangbangers, old hippies and grad students. It was a bad neighborhood. I actually witnessed a murder on Morse in 1997. I moved out in 1999. But I went back for some art fair back in 2008 and it looked pretty nice. I hardly recognized the area around the Morse station. Similar things could be said about Logan back in the 80s and 90s. I guess not all of the shady dudes got the msg that the neighborhood has gentrified.

I lost my wallet this morning in the area of Greenleaf - Glenwood - Morse. It's a black tri-fold fabric wallet with my ID, credit cards, and other information. I have canceled the credit cards and I'm having new ones issued.

If anyone finds anything that would have my name on it, please let me know. I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Have you switched from Comcast to RCN?

I am thinking of switching from Comcast to RCN in order to save money. Has anyone switched from one company to the other? Have you seen good savings over comparable packages? I went to RCN's website like I was going to purchase new service and put everything in my cart. I tried to make it really close to what I have now as far as Premier Digital, Phone, Internet, Tivo, extra digital box, router, modem, unpublished number, etc. Have I been paying too much this long? The monthly estimated bill (which includes estimated fees and taxes) was 30% lower than Comcast!! Trying to decide if it would really be worth it. Thanks for the feedback!!!

  • Sadly, you have to rotate now every couple years. Comcast has a better DVR feature. But them changing their name to Xfinity didn’t change their horrific customer service. Be glad you have options. If you are in an Xfinity only building, you’re in purgatory

I switched from Comcast to RCN three months ago. Tomorrow my new Comcast boxes should arrive and I will cancel RCN immediately. I switched because I was paying Comcast $125 and RCN could keep me at $115. Not too much of a savings but I was sick of Comcast playing games with my bill. Since I signed up with RCN, I have been billed $170 monthly and they really have zero interest in making it right. The best I was offered was less services still @ $120. I would have been happy with that IF they had been willing to go back and adjust my monthly bill for the past 3 months. However, they could care less. I had one rep offer me a $100 credit (thank you). However, when I called to see where that was no one had record of the promise and were not willing to do anything about it. I should have known better when the installer arrived and announced there was a $35 install fee, It's fair but was not disclosed when I arranged set up.
Comcast is a challenge but RCN has made me run straight back to them. I have been nothing but lied to and overcharged by RCN and they have ZERO customer service or concern to make it right. I will deal with Comcast and watch their billing any day over dealing with this nightmare.

Details on the Chill New Way to Bike to Evanston
Among the 20 new miles of bikeways the Chicago Department of Transportation has planned for 2018, one of the most useful new routes will be the Rogers Park Greenway. It will extend the popular Glenwood Greenway in Uptown and Edgewater by a couple of miles miles and create a low-stress way to visit Evanston, our neighbor to the north.
