Free bird walk at Indian Boundary Sunday, April; 29

Indian Boundary Park’s 13.06 acres are alive with bird songs – some of them unfamiliar to frequent visitors.
Join your neighbors Sunday, April 29 for the annual Spring Bird Walk, led by David Willard of the Chicago Audubon Society, who has led our Spring and Fall bird walks for many years. He not only knows the bird songs. He knows where to find them.

Gather in the Indian Boundary Park Cultural Center, 2500 W. Lunt and step off for a 45-minute walk around the park at 8 a.m. rain or shine. Don’t forget to bring binoculars.
Coffee and breakfast sweets will be provided before and after the walk, and stick around to discuss birds and birding with Dave.
Presented by the Indian Boundary Park Advisory Council, the Spring Bird Walk is free of charge, and as usual, donations of any amount will be warmly received.

Moving to the neighborhood -- Community Groups?

Hi there,
Moving to Rogers Park next month from downtown. Do any specific community action groups come to mind, that a newcomer should join to start becoming involved?
No particular cause/topic in mind right now--just looking to become a contributing member of the community.
Thanks!!

The next round of participatory budgeting is ...
The next round of participatory budgeting is about to begin! This is when you and your neighbors decide how to spend over $1 million in improvements for the 49th Ward. Each year, I receive over $1 million from the City’s “Aldermanic Menu” program to spend at my discretion on infrastructure improvements in the ward. Nine years ago, I implemented a “participatory budgeting” process in which the residents of my ward decide directly through popular vote how those tax dollars are spent. Since then, scores of cities across the nation have emulated our process and just recently Participatory Budgeting became the subject of a PBS documentary. The process for determining how to spend next year’s budget begins NOW. Over the next two weeks, I will host six “Neighborhood Assemblies” (five in English and one in Spanish) throughout the 49th Ward. The first assembly takes place Monday, April 23rd, 7:00 p.m. (complimentary pizza served at 6:30 p.m.) at Sullivan High School, 6631 N. Bosworth (enter through the door in the middle of the block). If you can’t make this assembly, there are five more to choose from. For more information, including a list of all the Participatory Budgeting Neighborhood Assemblies, visit: https://www.ward49.com/news/decide-how-to-spend-1-million-to-improve-the-neighborhood-participatory-budgeting-begins-next-week/

How true that is, Live. I talked to one woman after the event who was taking voter's registrations. She got several. The students standing near me seemed to be itching to vote when one speaker was talking about the importance of registering and voting. This is not going to be an apathetic generation.
Thank heaven for our neighborhood crusaders for peace, solidarity, and respect!
