Looking for an occasional "odd-jobber"

Looking for someone who can help me now and then. Where is a good place to find someone like this? Craigslist wants to charge me way too much to post this kind of ad on their list

  • Of course be careful and ask them for references

But I don't need a "handyman". That's why I said odd-jobber. Have things I need help with that don't fall under handyman category. I did text one guy, but otherwise did not find what I was looking for I need someone who can help me with assorted things I can't do myself

Pedestrian hit & run

My son was hit by a light silver Honda sedan when crossing the alley on Ardmore and Glenwood. The vehicle left the scene without even checking to see how bad the injuries were.

If you witnessed the accident, please contact me.

Thank you.

  • So sorry to hear this. I suggest that you post the message to Edgewater, since it wasn’t technically in Rogers Park.

  • I am glad to hear your son is alright.

Has anyone else been followed recently?

I was followed home by a group of 3 people yesterday evening, and just wanted to see if it had happened to anyone else recently.I went slowly and even made a couple stops along the way and each time they were hanging back waiting for me. I've lived here for several years and have never had something like this happen before. It happened on Sheridan around 5:45. I can provide more details if necessary.

  • Someone should check out the group that hangs out on Lunt between Clark and Ashland

  • steven beckerman Lifelong resident of the Rogers Park neighborhood.

I've had friends in Lincoln Square, and Lakeview, both single women, report similar situations recently, In one case she asked him loudly why he was following her, and he began a verbally abusive barrage, but by that time it had gained the attention of passersby, and neighbors.

The Friends of Rogers Park Library celebrated National Library Week with giving away money! These funds will help purchase additional items, not in the city’s budget for our library. At our meeting on April 14, 2018, the last day of National Library Week, we approved sending a $1000 check to the Chicago Public Library Foundation. They will purchase many more books through their power of mass purchasing. They will buy additional children’s books just in time for the Summer Reading Program for our library. We will spend another $1500 to get live music performances, decorations, and materials also for this year’s Summer Learning Program from our account. We are able to raise these funds through our book sales and from a few generous donors. We thank all who buy books at our sales, we thank all our donors and we thank all the volunteers who help with the book sale. They help make the Rogers Park Library one of the busiest branch libraries with the many people coming to use our neighborhood learning resource.

Our next book sale is scheduled for Saturday, April 28, 2018, from 10 AM to 4 PM. Please come to our Spring Fling Book Sale, and buy an armload of books. Your purchases help us to help our library. We also need volunteers to help set up the sale on April 27 and help run and clean up after the sale on April 28. Sign up to volunteer at the Reference Desk. Just fill out a form, and give it to the reference librarian. If you can’t make it to the April 28th Book Sale, you can still donate to the Friends of the Rogers Park Library to help us strengthen our neighborhood learning center.

The Rogers Park Library is currently running out of storage space for new book donations. However, after the April 28 Book Sale, we will accept gently used books. If you are donating books, please do not put them in the Book Return, where they will be mixed with returning library books. It takes more time to sort through the returning and donated books. After April 28, gently used books can be dropped off at the Circulation Desk. Some of them may be immediately put into the library's collection. Also, check with our neighboring branch libraries like Edgewater and Bezazian who have Library Friends groups and are members of our Chicago Coalition of Library Friends. They have upcoming book sales. Thanks.

Thanks for your time, and really appreciate your patience in helping a new neighbor feel more confident in their move!

RP is a great place to live! I've lived here for 15 years and it has everything I could need or want. As others have said, use your street smarts-be aware of your surroundings, keep your head up and say hi to strangers. Good luck in your new home!

Welcome to the extended neighborhood J! As has been said, be conscious of your surroundings, look people in the eye, and say good morning. The more populated a time of day, the safer you will be.
I agree with Michael; there are those who fear danger everywhere, and those who are unconscious. Stuff happens on North Michigan Avenue, Lincoln Park and River North. Be conscious.

Just like I'm positive that no matter what goes in there some people will insist its completely the alderman's fault that they didn't get exactly what they feel entitled to demand. It's going to be either too big or too small. It's going to have too much affordable/subsidized housing or not enough. In the VERY highly unlikely event there will be a retail component, it will either be too much or not enough.

And unless they put up a parking garage (oh that would be the best) you can guarantee with the certainty of death and taxes that people will insist there isn't enough parking.

Now, years later, Mr. Emuwa is bringing his life’s joy to Rogers Park – by opening the first ever store dedicated exclusively to his favorite food. Insert photo. Located on the corner of Touhy and Clark, in a former law office serving mostly a Latino clientle, Mr. Emuwa’s store features a full array of items, all made from his favorite fruit. Fruit? Mr. Emuwa eagerly explains: “You might be inclined to call it a vegetable, thanks to its green hue and savory taste, but the avocado is technically a fruit, and even more specifically, a single-seeded berry.” Emuwa continues. “People don’t realize the variety of things one can do with avocados. Avocado chips. Avocado fries. Bacon, lettuce and avocado sandwiches. Come in for breakfast and try our delicious avocado omelets!” Pointing at his new pizza oven, Emuwa face brightens with his newest offerings: “And people are going to love our avocado pizzas! They’ll never want tomato based pizzas again!” In cooperation with Gale Math & Science Academy (1631 W. Jonquil), Emuwa is using the school’s renowned 3rd floor garden and green space as a research lab, with impressive results. At Gale’s green space, two of Emuwa’s sales clerks, Tonia Andreina and Shapree Mallory, both of whom are also biologists experienced in genetic modification, are changing the culinary world with their latest discovery: orange avocados. “We think orange avocados will help stimulate sales” says Ms. Andreina. “Many kids simply aren’t drawn to foods that are green.”

Hi, I called the non-emergency number and they were not really interested in the case until I got a report from Amazon. It's been reported to Amazon. The pictures you see are screen shots taken from a video. The video shows the couple walking by several times slowly eying the package. A short time later the male comes back climbs over the fence, takes the package, walks out the gate, and runs west on Farwell Ave. In the report to Amazon I let them know that the Amazon Delivery service dropped the package over the gate and never rang the buzzer to contact me. I was home the entire day and could have easily come down and picked the package up. Again, this was all on the surveillance video.

Update on Police Efforts to Stem Violence in Rogers Park

The Chicago Police Department is working around the clock at an aggressive strategy to prevent a repeat of the unusual spike in gun violence that has plagued our neighborhood in the last few weeks.

I attended Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy's monthly "CompStat" accountability session for north side district commanders this morning.

Though I am not able to share the details of the specific strategies employed, rest assured that 24th District Commander Thomas Waldera (see photo below) is receiving reinforcements from other Chicago Police Department units and is employing them in a comprehensive manner to prevent another outbreak of violence. The City of Evanston is also helping by redeploying some of its police officers to Howard Street.

Commander Waldera has been out in the field late into the night directing his forces.

These efforts are bearing fruit. The police have recovered six guns, some of them fully loaded, from, from suspected gang members. The individuals possessing those guns were arrested and charged.

Police also have arrested and charged an individual suspected in the March 25th shooting of a man at Ashland and Jarvis. They believe they know the identity of the other assailant and are currently searching for him.

Police also arrested an individual they suspect of being involved in the early Tuesday morning shooting of a 16-year-old boy at Jonquil and Ashland. Unfortunately, they currently only have enough evidence to charge the individual with the unlawful possession of an automobile.

The police and my office cannot do it alone, however. We need the involvement of all community residents. I urge you to attend one of the upcoming monthly CAPS beat meetings.

For information on the time and location of the CAPS meetings and more information on the efforts of the 24th District and my office to stem the gang violence, visit;

  • Yes, that's what we've been telling you all along. The police have license plate readers but how is that at all relevant to be posted on this thread which is a full four years old? BTW, Garry McCarthy is no longer the Superintendent. Eddie Johnson has been for a couple of years now.

No, don't twist the facts. They were not using LPRs here even two years ago ...when did they get them and why do they not have better PR on their efforts to reduce crime? How many did they really have?

  • Oh, they're activists to be sure...unfortunately the kind that populate so many Chicago schools with their activism that they and their fellow students are unteachable.

Anyone had any interactions with Loyola's police?

I'm a reporter for the Loyola student newspaper investigating transparency problems with Loyola's private police force. If you or anyone you know has had any interactions or issues with campus safety that made you feel uncomfortable or you think could be a problem, please contact me.

  • Rob

The Loyola police carry guns and have the same arrest powers as municipal peace officers and county sheriffs.

  • d3 NOH

Municipal plates are optional and save the organization money but there's also a whole ongoing debate in Springfield right now over whether private universities are entitled to them

Primary Election March 20 - Don't Forget to Write-In Cam Davis!

Just a reminder that early voting is open and final election day is a week from now, Tuesday, March 20. There will be a rare opportunity to write in a FANTASTIC candidate for Metropolitan Water Reclamation District for the Unexpired 2-year term of Commissioner Bradford, who died after the deadline for candidates to get on the ballot. Here's how to complete this write-in:

Just a reminder that early voting is open and final election day is a week from now, Tuesday, March 20. There will be a rare opportunity to write in a FANTASTIC candidate for Metropolitan Water Reclamation District for the Unexpired 2-year term of Commissioner Bradford, who died after the deadline for candidates to get on the ballot. Here's how to complete this write-in:

For Touchscreen - When you see "Metropolitan Water Reclamation District - Bradford Vacancy" touch the "Write-In" box - Type in "Cam Davis" and press OK

For Paper Ballots - Write in "Cam Davis" and fill in the arrow next to the box you just wrote his name in.

Why is this important? - If Cam Davis doesn't get the requisite vote, the position can be filled by appointment of the Governor Bruce Rauner.

Cam Davis is local (lives in Evanston) and HIGHLY qualified (check out his Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cameron_Davis_(EPA) ) He's endorsed by The Trib and Sun-Times, The Sierra Club, Sen. Dick Durbin, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, Rep. Mike Quigley and many others. Please share this with friends, family and neighbors!

    Cameron Davis (EPA) - Wikipedia
Cameron Davis graduated from New Trier High School and Boston University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in International Relations, with an interest in international environmental affairs. He worked during the day and put himself through night school at Chicago-Kent College of Law, earning his J.D.

  • Yes, good questions on the write-in of "Cam Davis" and/or "Cameron Davis" - and I can definitively say that my discussions with election officials is that BOTH will be considered to be valid.

    Good to hear, thanks.

Did you forget to register to vote?

Never fear--we have same day registration now in Illinois. If you're not registered to vote or moved and forgot to change your registration, just show up on Tuesday at the polling place for your precinct and bring at least 2 pieces of ID. One ID must show your current address; it can even be a utility bill. After registering, you will be allowed to vote

So I’m in that group of 20 something’s where half the people I know are getting married and the other half are still at home with parents pursuing career. Last year two close friends got married, to different people, not each other. Both events were out of state and I’m part of the group that is saving money at home with mom and dad. Being that my financial situation is strained I couldn’t attend either event. This May another friend is getting married out of state. I’m planning on doing my absolute best to make it. One of the recently married friends will be attending the same event. Here is the predicament: what is the appropriate very belated wedding gift? Also, I know it would be poor taste to give the belated gift while attending the upcoming wedding. Would it be best to send something before or after the event in May? Needless to say I’m on a budget, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you're going to get them a belated gift anyway, there's no point in strategizing when to send it and waiting until May could have the potential of signaling to your recently married friends that you're only sending them a gift at or after the May wedding because you're feeling guilty, awkward or something else rather than a gift in celebration and congratulations.

As for a suggestion now that you sound like you're a few months after-the-fact, send them a nicer picture frame for their wedding pictures that they should be getting back around this time. Home Goods, Nordstroms, Marshalls and a number of other places have lovely "wedding-y" frames at a good price. If they're really your friends, they'll appreciate the thought and a nice card and note over the perceived price tag.

    Best of luck.
