Grace Owner Set To Open New Restaurant Near Loyola
The Loyola community will soon welcome a restaurant owned by Loyola alumnus Michael Olszewski, who owned recently-closed restaurant Grace. Olszewski plans to open Onward, a casual, fine-dining restaurant, beneath the Hampton Inn Chicago North-Loyola Station on North Sheridan Road. This comes after the sudden closing of the high-end downtown Grace.

Parents please contact your local schools council to support safe passage in Rogers Park.

After the recent shootings and strong armed robberies a small group of concerned parents met to discuss options.
We were advised to take our concerns to local schools principles and the LSC.
There is no formal process in place to establish safe passage in Rogers Park.
The idea is to have this in place for the start of the fall session.
If this effort gains traction the local police commander and Alderman can provide additional information and guidance.
It all starts with parents contacting the LSC and principles.

  • This old posting is from 2016. Is the original poster, Bruce, trying to stir the pot by dragging it up again with hopes of provoking argument and controversy? None of the 14 schools mentioned in the most recent comment are in or near Rogers Park. A posting from two years ago is no longer informative. The new listing of schools isn't relevant to Rogers Park. Old news isn't helpful and unnecessary provocation isn't neighborly. What's your point Bruce?

I confronted them and they seemed completely unconcerned about the mistreatment. I switched cars to call the police, and also informed the driver. Two other witnesses said that after I switched cars, the couple became verbally belligerent. I don't believe any action has been taken yet.

If you see these people carrying this dog around, please report to police or animal shelter!

Perspective | I've been a census enumerator. Asking about citizenship is a terrible idea.
CHICAGO - The Van Dorn, an overcrowded apartment building in the Rogers Park neighborhood, is Donald Trump's worst nightmare, both as a luxury real estate developer and a nativist politician. Although its name connoted New York Knickerbocker elegance when it was built in 1923, the Van Dorn is now a shabby hive of tiny studios that overheat whenever the oven is dialed to 425.

  • The purpose of the census is to count the number of PEOPLE living in this country, not the number of CITIZENS living in this country. US citizens living abroad (who can vote), aren’t counted in the census, with a few minor exceptions.

  • Federal employees and their family members who work for our government in other countries. Also, anyone serving elsewhere in the military. Why? I don’t know, but I’d guess it’s because they are only living outside of the US due to their government service, whether it be civilian or military.

That's privately owned property on Morse to the east of the Mayne Annex, The Mayne Stage, JB Albertos and across the street from another Tawani project that is under development right now. Is Bruce claiming some authority over telling the owner of private property what they can or can't do with their own property? Contrary to the claim above, it's not "next to another vacant lot". The owner is using that lot as a parking area in support of a highly successful business on Morse Avenue. It's not "vacant" or unused. Is there a point to posting these photos of privately owned property?

(I received this via a CAPS email)
As reported by one of our neighbors and verified by CPD District 24, an assault and attempted robbery took place at the Estes Avenue Metra viaduct on Monday, 18 December, at approximately 5:45 pm. According to the victim, with whom I spoke a few minutes ago, she and her daughter were followed by a man as they walked north on Ravenswood from Greenleaf. Upon reaching the overpass, the man assaulted our neighbor from behind and was she was struck in the head by punches as the alleged attacker attempted to wrestle away a backpack that the woman was carrying. A passing motorist stopped to lend assistance at which point the man fled and used the unsecured gate at 1790 Estes to escape the scene.

I am pleased to report that the victim of the attack is doing well as is her daughter. It is expected for them both to be a little emotionally shaken so, I take the liberty as a neighbor to offer our collective support.

According to the official description provided by Sgt Sisk of the 24th District, the alleged attacker was a Black male, 5'6" to 5'8" in height.

However, additional information provided by the victim's husband suggests that the man appeared to have a limp and spoke with a bit of a slur. This last bit of information, along with the official description, describes someone with whom a few neighbors (including myself) have had some interaction.

Sgt. Sisk is following up with Area North detectives on the additional information so; if any of you know this alleged attacker, or his whereabouts, please communicate this to me or directly to CPD.

Please be aware of your surroundings and stay safe.

marijuana regulation

There are bills in Springfield to regulate marijuana like alcohol. One of the reasons I am very in favor of this is that it would make the street business less valuable, reducing the violent competition for turf.
You can talk to our legislators in Springfield here:

Is Participatory Budgeting Good For Chicago, Or Just Good PR?
Rebecca Wei lives in Rogers Park, and like many Chicagoans, she takes the 'L' everywhere. "I pass by the Morse 'L' stop twice a day, every day, and once or twice a year, there's a guy standing there from the alderman's office, who's like, 'Do you want to vote on how to spend a million dollars?'

It was very appropriate that "menu money" represents a very, very small percentage of the budget and has constraints on how those dollars are used. Certainly Joe Moore has ridden the public relations benefits of being the first in the US to use Participatory Budgeting (PB), there really is no disputing that fact and I do not intend that as a criticism as much as recognizing that when people do something innovative they want recognition.

I do not think PB is just a public relations ploy. It does serve to educate. as the linked article points out. Citizens get a good understanding of the limitations of the process and how little those dollars actually purchase. It does provide some insights into the larger budget issues a municipality faces.

I am in agreement with the IG (Mr. Ferguson) that while it would not be practical for citizens to be involved in the minutia of city budgeting, the PB process could be expanded to realize a greater impact.

ISO Waterproof Sling

Any thoughts on where I can find a waterproof immobilization sling? For a big guy with a broken shoulder who desperately needs a shower.
I've trying googling, without much success. I won't have a lot of time to make calls during business hours, so your experiences are appreciated!

Robin, I’m thinking you could also use contractors’ plastic, with medical waterproof tape.....

Looking to get estate jewelry appraised. Any suggestions? We don't want to pay more than the items are worth. And I don't want to schlep the jewelry downtown

Any indoor tracks near Loyola for the winter?

Hi all. I live very close to Loyola campus and do a lot of walking around the campus and elsewhere the rest of the year. I like cold weather walking, but this weather is just cold for me, and I'm really missing my daily long walk.

I called Loyola's rec center, and the indoor track is only accessible to those with a Loyola affiliation. I have none. I'm looking for an indoor track that might be accessible to the community, preferable free because I live in Rogers Park, but happy to pay a small amount for use. Not looking for cardio, treadmills, etc.--just a closeby track I can use for the winter. Can anyone help? Thank you!

Jane Addams Senior Caucus, ONE Northside, and Logan Square Neighborhood Association organized the teach-in about Community Benefit Agreements. We learned from Jawanza Malone of Kenwood Oakland Community Organization and the Obama Library CBA coalition about why CBA's are a growing movement in Chicago and around the country!

"We call on Alderman Moore to bring Target Corporation and Three Corners Development to the bargaining table to establish these community benefits for the Concord at Sheridan Development".

Katgault29, might you have lost your ring on Northwestern's landfill? There's a report on Nextdoor of a woman's ring being found there a few days ago.
