Violence has always been an issue in Rogers Park for as long as I can remember. It has improved in the last 10 years, but Morse Avenue needs help, it really does. It needs viable businesses that people can frequent and meanwhile not have to fear for your life. Morse Avenue needs to be revitalized in ways that parts of Andersonville and Edgewater have been in recent years. With gang bangers loitering, intimidating people, driving by, shooting each other and in this case passersby, businesses are not going to bother setting up shop on Morse Avenue. Further, people need to report crime and not just walk by the BS and say nothing. People also need to stop buying political BS from those who have allowed slumlords to rule in Rogers Park for so long. That too contributes to the issues in the community. The lack of jobs and real opportunities for youth is yet another contributor. Absent parents and poor school systems. The list goes on and on. There are many reasons for the gang violence in Rogers Park and the reasons don't include block groups trying to make their neighborhoods safe.

As mentioned at a community rally tonight (designed to bring people together), WE the people need to rise up and develop shared strategies to combat the violence and offer solutions and assistance to our youth. Standing up at a rally and blaming others is never going to solve the problem people. You are smart enough to realize that, I'm sure of it! What I witnessed tonight is sad! I hope this community learns from the mistakes of the past and it can come together to solve the gang violence and the problems it creates in Rogers Park. Community block groups have worked to clean up certain areas of this community. That's a fact! Why blame them people? I understand people are pissed about Trump and the economic and political climate, but to blame block groups is ridiculous. There has to be a better way to channel your frustration and anger. Just sayin...

Wow a totally positive thread about taking positive actions.
Andy used to station artist along the Morse and Glenwood intersection to inspire creativity and positive loitering.

Back then it was called "Andy told me to practice my art here."

This led to many of the public works that remain today. Including the graveless marker in his honor.

A few weeks ago after a raging party that involved all three floors of the building, I finally had to call in a noise complaint at 1 am. And the party was broken up

Tonight Again I had to call in a noise complaint. An hour later after NO response and a growing party I had to call it in again. The party was broken up.
But and hour later, they were back out and partying even harder than before.
Another call. Another police visit.

This building is out of control. What can be done? Obviously they have little regard for the police, and have NO regard for their neighbors.

  • lisaann mom

And contact the building owner. Let them know you are documenting and calling police and Loyola. Also, do not wait until 1 am to call police. The Chicago noise ordinance says 10 pm-8 am is quiet time. Hang in there. I have been through this.

What day is Trick - or - Treat for 60626?

Hi there! I am an Ohio transplant and I would love to participate in trick - or - treat. I live in the Jarvis Square area. What day is trick - or -treat?

  • In Chicago, it is always *on* Halloween and kids usually start going around after school lets out (on weekdays) and will go until dark or so.

  • Helen NoH North of Howard for 55 + years

If by participate, you mean you want to hand out goodies, be aware that kids probably won't be coming to your door if you live in an apartment building. I suggest checking with your neighbors before stocking up on candy to see what usually happens in the Jarvis Square area.

  • JMG

Hot spots on Halloween are usually areas with concentrations of sfhs. Look for blocks with lots of decorations on porches for trick or treating.

ISO : Indoor Lighting Supplies and Plants

Hello,

I'm a houseplant hobby grower and could use more plant grow lights. These can include LEDs, florescent tube lights, workshop lights, aquarium lights, etc. If you have items you don't need, please let me know!

I could also use plant propagation plug trays. This sometimes comes with seed starting kits.

I mainly grow succulents/cacti, orchids, and tillandsia. I'm open to trades.

Thanks!

There's a place on Skokie Blvd., east side of the street, near Church, as well as a place on Kedzie near Elston, also east side, that might have what you're looking for.

What's with "swings"?

I was on a walk in the neighborhood on a block just west of Ridge and I saw several houses on the same block with large signs on the lawns saying "We Support Swings". Then I saw what looked like a whole porch swing detached from its frame, in front of one of the houses, out by the curb. Like it was to be picked up by a trash collector.

Rogers Park Wins; Chicago Wins

A federal judge has ruled Attorney General Jeff Sessions cannot follow through with his threat to withhold public safety grant money to Chicago and other so-called sanctuary cities for refusing his order to impose tough immigration policies.

U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber on Friday granted Chicago's request for a temporary "nationwide" injunction. That means the Justice Department can't deny requests for the grant money until Chicago's lawsuit against the agency is concluded. He wrote that Chicago has shown a "likelihood of success" in its arguments that Sessions overstepped his authority with the requirements.

Judge: Grant money for sanctuary cities can't be denied
CHICAGO (AP) -- Attorney General Jeff Sessions can't follow through -- at least for now -- with his threat to withhold public safety grant money to Chicago and other so-called sanctuary cities for refusing to impose new tough immigration policies, a judge ruled Friday in a legal defeat for the Trump administration.

My comment, deleted without reason it was
In the end, what is wrong about deporting illegal immigrants?
What's wrong with deporting those who have no right to be here in the first place?

  • This is about Jefferson Beauregard's politically motivated attempt to withhold public safety grant money from Chicago and other cities across the country. This federal court decision has nothing to do with deportation. The federal judiciary had to tell the United States Attorney General to begin defending the Constitution and stop playing political games. Shameful, but once a political Alabama Senator cozies up with racists you can expect the Alabama United States Attorney General to get political and cozy up with racists.

This is vegan outreach and informing the public of the atrocities of slaughterhouses. We could make signs and hold vigils, hold witness but that can be decided as a group. I'm disgusted with CTA service. Today before 8am I witnessed on the SB platform a large number of CTA uniformed employees. Nice, something must be going on. One in particular though was barking in a fake way of showing care to those on the platform "excuse me, excuse me" as he pushed his self through the crowd into the arriving trains.

In his hand was a spray bottle with a syrupy green liquid. He used no rags nor towels just sprayed about 12 times onto the floor and INTO THE AIR VENTS along the tops of the seats. In a few of the cars. It is clear that his intent was to MASK odors instead of clean and to give the false impression of cleaning. One of the oldest tricks - to spray a concentrated cleaner to fake clean.

The syrupy liquid had all the signs of a full-strength cleaner, a violation of product use and serious discomfort to the passengers as now one smells the urine common on the trains AND a caustic noise and eye irritation.

What made this worse was following behind this attendant was another uniformed CTA person with a clip board laughing with the first. Not correcting the first as he plowed through the standing passengers nor questioning spraying into the air vents.

He did though point out the pile of paper the first stepped over to which the first backed up, picked up the paper, loudly pushed his way back through the passengers as he stuffed the trash into a can - with drama to spare. The second followed with a laugh.

In between spraying in the cars the first barked to the passengers instructing them to hurry up.

Is this CTA training or even a form of hazing? I saw at least seven uniformed CTA employees feet away pretending to not see.

The CTA train driver sounded apologetic over the intercom leaving the Howard station as the caustic effects of the cleaner (looked like Simply Green which is a false green cleaner known to be very irritating) began to take its effect.

Make an effort CTA, an honest effort!

  • What a clean place! Even the trains passing through Edgewater are clean! It's so clean that even the CTA gives the stations in Edgewater a special scrubbing! So clean!
