Portage Theater

I heard it was going to close. However the website shows bookings through April I walked by there tonight and everything has been stripped from the lobby..the chandelier, the vintage movie posters, the concession stand...all gone.

Dibs

Born and raised in Chicago.Ive seen an ironing board out there.

  • So glad the pouring rain today is not snow.... I can't stand any more bickering about dibs... :-)

  • What's wrong with lawn chairs on the parkway? That way when it gets warmer, you can sit out there and watch people throw real garbage on the street- you know, fast food bags, wrappers, cups, etc.

    Danny Hunt,
Thanks for the numbers. One thing that could be related to that is the average property tax for residents in those same school districts.

  • I'll bet that the cost per student for administrators (principals on up to board and union prez) in Chicago is much more than the other districts. The bureaucrats/politically connected get their money in #299 but their kids don't get a proper education or the proper means to obtain it because the system is broken.

I wasn't able to prove or disprove this in my preliminary searches. If anyone has a source i will check/verify my assertion.

How should I phrase this? I've worked with highly motivated refugee children in Europe who came from war devasted areas, deep trauma and starvation. All they had was respect for our work, a broken crayon, a piece of paper, our solid foundation of academic values and behavioral expectations that were taken for granted plus our collective imagination. Ocassionally, on a lucky day, a few worn out donated books in European languages that they didn't understand. Within months they came up with amazing literacy skills in new languages and master plans for all kinds of groundbreaking concepts out of necessity. It was the environment of respect, rapport, expectation, motivation and endless gratitude on every side. Here??? My goodness!!! Don't get me started about my trials and tribulations within this impossible system. I'll keep my mouth shut until I'm done with my current gig, hopefully in one piece.

Di's Den Burglary

I just saw in the Nadig news that Di's Den was burglarized Sunday night. I live on that block and hadn't heard about this. It sounded very professionally done. Pretty scary.

  • Do you have a link?

I saw it in the paper version; it doesn't appear on their website yet, although it seems like the stories there are a week behind.

Looking for recommendations

Looking for someone to install new drywall in our small coat closet in our bungalow. Located in north Montclair. Must be reliable.

  • Home advisor is a great place.

  • PennyPenguin Chillin' out on EB

So is Angie's List and Yelp! and Google, and other sites w/ reviews.

  • I second Home Advisors. I have people but they are all so busy I can't get them to call me back. So I went to Home Advisors. You tell them what you need and then they send 3 people or companies to you. They are all vetted. The painter I got was good.

C-H-B....To personnel costs including the continued practice of Chicago taxpayers paying 75% of what CTU members should be contributing to their pensions.

  • FYI CTU only contributes 2% of their pay while other unions contribute from 9 to 11%.
