Hi Everyblock:

I am curious about udpates the following locations and can share what I know also.

4) Six Corners: Same- not getting calls returned. I am guessing Sears will make announcements after their Q4 earnings come in so maybe developers are waiting to hear about that site also. Just not sure.

5) Central and Berteau: Mia's Gelato. It usually closes in the winter, but maybe the summer was not strong enough for them. They have a Brokerage sign on the window showing it's available for lease.

The space has been gutted over a year ago and Elly's has salvaged and relocated much of the kitchen equipment from their former North Avenue location to this space. It is sitting in a big pile in the middle of the space. Other then that there has been no other activity nor do they have any permits posted for a build out of a restaurant.

It is my opinion they would be able to be separated if the 2 of them become too much but she will not separate them herself. She will take them back if it doesn't work out or someone changes their mind. The cats are not a problem. My sisters and her dog are the problem. He is harassing the cats. The cats are ok with dogs. Her dog is not ok with the cats. They really need a better home. My sister favors the dog. When she doesn't have money she feeds them dog food! She doesn't keep up with cleaning the litter like she should. I can't have any cats because mine is FELV+ and I am a renter. My landlord lives in my building and only allows one cat. She was supposed to be taking care of the cats temporarily but the original guardian is now in a nursing home and wont be able to take them back. She is aware she is looking for a home for them. I'm willing to provide some free cat sitting visits to anyone who adopts them( within reason). I will drive you to meet the cats in Elgin if needed. Or I will bring them to you if you would like. A trial basis is good too. Or even if I could find someone to take care of them until a new home is found that could work too. I'm willing to help in any way I can.

Splitting up a pair of cats that have been together for a long time, or who have bonded, can be very stressful for them. And stressed cats are less likely to achieve a successful adoption. Most no-kill shelters are very sensitive to this situation. Are there any suitable shelters in the Elgin area?

    Article about feline bonding:
    https://www.petplace.com/article/cats/pet-behavior-training/bonding-in-cats/

As many owners already know, cats don't just bond to their moms or to their human owners. They may also bond to other cats. So powerful can such bonds be between individuals that they may show separation anxiety if separated. This is not a bad arrangement until longterm separation through illness or death becomes inevitable. In such cases, cats must be trained to develop new bonds with either other cats (a new kitten, perhaps) or new human acquaintances. In severe cases, antidepressants may be needed to help such formerly bonded cats around this sharp corner of life.

No shelters are suitable in my sisters opinion. Neither is seperating them.

Read Dunning School at Oak Park and Irving

Has anything been decided about this school? Is it going to be a new high school for Bridge, Canty, Dever and Smyser students or a freshman campus for Taft? I've been hard-pressed to find any information.

  • I do not think anything has been publicly decided. CPS and the alderman keep saying it is under review. My guess is that CPS has already made up their mind but wont say until next year or so.

Anyone interested in bartering services? I need my surround sound system hooked up.

I can do petsitting. Trim cat or dogs nails. Dog walks. Hand out business cards or flyers.

No. I guess i should do that. I just figured since i had the receivers manual and still didn't figure it out i must be doing something wrong. Never had a problem hooking any of this stuff up before! I guess im being lazy. I hate doing stuff around the house like that! Its not a whole system. Its a seperate receiver. The speakers are on their own. Maybe they arent compatable or something weird.

  • AprilsAngelsPets 12-year pet care provider

Thanks inactive. Ill look that info up tomorrow to post. An ex boyfriend gave it to me. Hes kinda jerky like that! Hence hes an ex! I dont think hed purposely give me the speakers knowing they didnt work but i suppose its possible he was just passing em on unaware if they work because he had no use for them since he kinda doesnt own anything he probably didnt have a system to hook them up to.

Found Cat Tabby with white chest and paws male

Grace and Narragansett Ave. Very affectionate. Checking tomorrow if microchipped. Posting on Lost Cats Illinois - Facebook as well. Very nice boy - was very hungry. I bathed his chest and paws so his picture might not be a very good representation. In my home tonight and my own cats are in the basement. Let me know if you or someone you know is missing this guy.

  • Hey Belmont Central. I don't know his age but he will be neutered next Wed and the vet will give me an idea of his age as he will draw blood and won't neuter if he has age-related issues such as kidney etc. I will let you know and would love for you to meet him! Vandals on Long again.

Came home yesterday to two holes (quarter sized) in the side of my house on long/warwick. I originally thought something thrown from a car, but, no broken glass or pieces on sidewalk. There was some type of clear liquid splattered, but, not paint. I remember something similar nearby involving paint pellets shot from a car. Could be the same, but, not paint. Could also be the schmuck group of kids who walk home from portage elementary and like to throw rocks and act like punks. Either way, I'll be alerting the police. This will be tough to stop if it's random drive byes. Photos too big eb says.

I've always been curious about this and never got a definitive answer. I don't want to get into it with someone for throwing away my dog poo.

I get why it might be illegal considering it would be an aggravation if people kept randomly filling your garbage up with their disposables. Yet when my friend didn't have garbage cans and called the city about it, they told him until he gets his own to use his neighbors because they are city property.

I have been yelled at for my dog urinating on someone's lawn. I do utilize my yard first thing in the morning and thruought the day for play and to relieve the dog. When on walks, I always pick up poop. I live in Belmont craigin where it seems very few do pick up after although there are aldermanic signs everywhere that encourage pick up in English and Spanish.I really dont think it matters who's garbage can gets who's dogs excriment. Its picked up and disposed of. If someone is crying about it then another can is nearby avoid theirs. As for urination on cans....dogs mark. It is what it is.

I hear everyday how people across on the busy street apartments park in front of our single family homes. The street does not belong to us. It is city property. Garbage cans are city property. How frustrating it is to try and find parking for family on holidays in front of your own home. That irritates me more than the garbage can disposal.
At least there is respect when owners pick up poop. There is none shown to the homeowners that have family over for the holidays and cannot utilize the parking directly in front of their homes.
Some of us were brought up correctly and realize that respect goes a long way!

Too often car honkers act like the noise releases them from taking further precaution and they blindly roll out without first stopping. (2) Consider the nearby neighbors. "Cats also hunted down larger mammals, including high numbers of rabbits, weasels, stoats and grey squirrels. But they were very poor at killing rats, having captured only 162 in the survey - probably because the rodents fight back viciously."

The reason people arent seeing rats where these cats are is not because they kill them. Rats are put off by the smell of cat urine (just like people) and move along. So these scare tactics of rats being a threat to humans is invalid if the rats are just moving to a neighbors were there are less cats. So stop using the excuse cats kill rats. Also if a cat is being fed their prey drive is not as strong. Its still there but they can become lazy hunters.

  • We don't invite rats to live in the neighborhood and have set a humane-kill trap (we've eliminated six city rats inside two weeks last month and have no signs of any more outside in the past 10 days). We do have a couple feral cats prowling the area, and still...

However, I have had some wild (literally) life experiences offshore -- in one such case I had rats scampering around beside my bunk as soon as I snuffed the lights (couldn't keep lights on). Those rats showed NO interest in me; never touched me or took a nibble.
I've never heard of a rat approaching/biting anyone and doubt they would unless trapped and threatened - or diseased. Some small solace: While rats and mice are able to carry the rabies virus in their bodies, they have not been shown to be infected with rabies in wild populations.

    Nikki,
Just as important as having new keys to work the locks on your new place is the quality of locks that are used. I’ve had trouble with Quickset locks (Key resembles Mercedes symbol), and only use Schlage locks on my home. Changing a lock yourself is not a hard thing & can be as simple as 2 screws. A locksmith usually charges $15/tumbler to re-key a lock. If you want to replace the locks, and purchase the materials yourself, consider this. There is a key code on the package of a new lock, Deadbolt & knob can be found in the same package. If you purchase 2 packages with the same key code, one key will work everything.
The reason I prefer Schlage brand is that they come with 2 strike plates. One is double thick and has 3” screws that go through the jamb and into the framing member (2x4) behind the jamb. Those are Much harder to break into, but are also harder to install. You need to chisel out a recess for the deeper strike plate, and pre-drill holes for the 3” screws. If your jambs are metal or there is brick instead of 2x4 behind the jamb, the degree of difficulty increases.significantly.Good luck with your new place,
    Rich

Found dog

My neighbor just told me that she found a male dog, looks like a labradoodle, black and white, collar but no tags. Message me if you've lost a dog and I'll get your information to her. We're in Portage Park, near Irving Park and Austin.

  • Thanks anyway - hope that all the lost dogs find their way home.

  • No, it's an unkept standard schnauzer. I told them to post on FB illinois lost dogs. Sandoval, I know exactly what dog they are talking about. Cute as a button. I hope it finds its way back home soon. Bless her for watching over it.

Splendid Soap Shop

I just found a wonderful little shop at Irving Park Rd and Mead (across from The Portage Theatre) called Distinct Bath and Body.
They sell handmade soap (made on site), bath salts, scrubs, face masks, shaving soaps, loofahs, etc.
Everything smells wonderful and the owner is friendly and attentive.
If you love artisinal bath products, you gotta check it out!

  • Forgot to mention axe throwing, Culver's and Binny's too. haha

  • Spam Alert Don't be selling your used junk up in here, okay?

Was kind of irritated to feel tricked into "liking" a three+ year-old thread that someone bumped. Then read all the friendly, informative comments (ax throwing aside) and am glad I did! Hope the shop prospers in its new location.

Hi neighbors. If you live on Cornelia west of Long where the Peoples Gas/NPL line work has been taking place over the past few weeks, be sure to carefully inspect your home's foundation, walls and ceilings.

In our home, the ceilings closest to the street where the work has been taking place are showing a substantial amount cracking since they started work in late October.

For those who aren't home during working hours, the work currently taking place requires a substantial amount of pounding that actually "shakes" your home from the bottom up.

I have contacted the Alderman's office as well as People's Gas directly about this, but wanted to spread the word to those who might be similarly affected and not even know it.

  • Absolutely. It stinks, but they do it and get away with it. Chances for damage increase in colder weather. "Before" photos would be your best proof-basis for claims of damage.

As new gas lines came in a few years back, I watched heavy equipment get driven over yards and sidewalks, damaging both. I pressed for replacement and they sent some jerkw@d who showed me lo-res photo captures he said came from video taken prior to the work. The images seemed to depict the new damage as pre-existing, with blurs or debris obscuring all detail, like they'd been messed with in Photoshop. I wasn't buyin it and said the coloring in the images looked weird, like before and after frames were put into one, the guy gave-up and marked the damaged sections for replacement.

  • It's always pre existing. They will come back with Google photos from 8 years ago that we had a tree and thats what caused uneven side walks not the heavy equipment driving on sidewalk and digging on sidewalk, They will also take all your good dirt and will replace with...

They will come back with Google photos from 8 years ago that we had a tree and thats what caused uneven side walks not the heavy equipment driving on sidewalk and digging on sidewalk, They will also take all your good dirt and will replace with sand or ground stone, When they finally return to replace lawn, they will take out 2 inches of sand/stone and replace wtth 2 inches of weed infested dirt and give instructions for watering, when sod starts turning brown, its your fault for not watering, can't grow sod on stone/sand. Take lots of photos before the start and during
if you can, probably still won't help. They fired the sub contractor who did our area because of damage and so many complaints but never fixed the damage.

XSport on Irving Park - Lock your doors!

Hey neighbors! My husband returned to his car after a workout to find a young man rummaging through the trunk of our car. The young man then got into an awaiting car and they drove off slowly. Yes, my husband called the police but he hasn't heard anything regarding filing a report, go figure.

  • My son has had 2 thefts at different XSport locations from the lockers... I think they are running their own theft ring myself... they don't give a rat about doing anything about it either... one was Lakeview and the other was either Portage or Norridge... I mean you have cameras, why are you not catching the scumbags doing this? Pathetic!

Can I borrow a Large cat crate?

I recently rescued a stray cat from my backyard but need to train her to use litter box. I was hoping someone had a large cage that could fit a litter box and bed that I can perhaps borrow?

  • Try laser-pointing a twisting trail to treats for happy and nimble cats. :-)

KristinaS. That would work fine. Did you already ask Portage Pk Animal Hosp if they're okay with that idea? What pet's name should we put on the bag?

  • KristinaS New to the area

Hi NW-Sider! I have not had a chance to call them yet, super busy with work, not even sure when we can get over there. I hope to get back to you within a few days :) Thanks so much for all your help :) It is really appreciated!

New Sidewalks at Chopin.

Wow the city actually used their brains this time, they were replacing some gas/sewer/water lines not sure exactly what it was under the road and at the same time tore up and redid the pretty bad sidewalks around the park.

We don't need this.

Take this away. It is in front of Vitamin Shoppe.

  • Inactive user: my first big laugh of the day! However, it makes me sad that people have to resort to that sort of thing to make a point. Apparently a world full of garbage doesn't bother some people. If they're driving, it's even easier. They drop it in someone else's neighborhood and don't have to look at it. Then it looks like WE are the ones who don't care.

  • Mute Mute Me

Kinda like the death penalty doesnt deter murder? Well it keeps me from killing people. Some people need a taste of their own medicine. Its been proven lots of people dont learn a lesson until it personally affects them.

Electrician

Hi, can anyone recommend a reliable plumber who can provide references? I need to have an outdoor outlet installed, and would be grateful for recommendations. Thank you!

  • paul in jefferson jefferson park resident

Hiring a plumber is not good, I made that mistake myself. Everytime I turned on the lights water came out the light fixtures.

  • You can call Rick from G. Electrical at 312-720-7474. Local electrician in Portage Park area.

Do you want to provide an outdoor kitty with a heated home during winter?

I bought this one on Amazon and we love it, the kitty loves it too. It was only about $45. There are so many feral cats in our area and they keep the rat population to a minimum for us so the least we can do is provide homes for some of them. If you have a covered outdoor area with an outlet you can plug this in, takes very minimal power to run. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004ZJOH06/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 here is a picture of the kitty in my backyard enjoying her house.

  • Laurie53 Parkside Neighbor

Kristina S and others who help...... thanks so much for taking care of the outdoor/ feral cats. Our recently trapped rescued kitten is going off to her new home today. We have other cats and can’t keep her. It’s a lot of work but well worth it.🐱

Congratulations St. John's Lutheran Volleyball on reaching #4 in the state LSL tournament!

I think one of the students on the team (A.J.) said it best: "Although we weren't satisfied with the end result, I don't think any of us could be unhappy with our play this season. We truly played our hearts out and no one ever dreamed of going this far in the state tournament. I'm very proud of the way we carried ourselves this whole year. We truly played our hearts out and no one ever dreamed of going this far in the state tournament. I'm very proud of the way we carried ourselves this whole year. We played non-selfish volleyball while representing God throughout the whole year. We couldn't have had better coaches and parents to help us get to this point in our season. This season, and especially this weekend, has been so much fun. We have put in a lot of work, and it has paid off. I will always remember this tournament and all the great people I had the privilege to play with. All these guys are amazing volleyball players and all of us greatly improved as individuals and as a team. This has been one of the best experiences I've had during my time at St. John's, and I will never forget it. Good job eagles!"

Homeless Man On Six Corners

I haven't seen the homeless man that sits in the bus enclosure on Irving park near cicero for about 2 weeks now. He is the man that never begs and has been out there a few years now. Does anyone know what happen to him?

  • Kapel2 Neighborhood Resident

Thank you Lindsey for being so instrumental in helping Joe and so many other local homeless folks re-integrate into a more normal life. You are truly a blessing to the community! As time allows I will send you and/or Gayle a note as to how my wife and I came to know about Joe and we will be sending another card for him and making a donation to HTH ministries.

  • Kapel Local Resident

Hi Lindsey P L, I am getting ready to send a donation to HTH Ministries and was wondering if Joe is still in the nursing home and basically how he's doing. I will be sending a card for him with the donation if you guys still have contact with him.

Central and Waveland

There was a question asked in another thread about what the status is at the empty lot at Central and Waveland. There was a meeting at Chicago academy in the spring about a Alzheimer’s memory development to be built. Is this one going to stay vacant as long as the Belmont and Narragansett site?

  • Maggiemay 45 year resident @ PP

I'm surprised they haven't found any dead body in there yet. It's gonna turn into a dumping ground soon

  • This is another project just like the one at Belmont and Narragansett that just sits. It’s a shame there is no transparency with Villegas. Locking back it’s a good thing many residents got involved in stopping Villegas from pushing thru that section-8 housing development. Everyone should be Leary of what is going on with these 2 areas.

I'm guessing he was born in the spring so he's still small but not tiny anymore. Just wondering if anyone on Berenice or Dakin or Grace have seen him? He was then also seen on 6300 block of West Warwick just this past Wednesday. They tried to coax him inside but the kitty ran away. It was also noticed at that time he had an eye injury so now I'm desperately wanting to find out where he might be so I can get help from cat rescue to try and trap him and get him off the streets soon!! Please, if anyone has seen him, please let me know. He looked similar to the cat in this photo but smaller and not sure of gray markings, he had more white hair I believe but I could never get close enough to know for sure. Thank you!

  • If it's a kitten you have a good chance to get it socialized. Can you get a trap from PAWS or animal cruelty? Thank you for trying to help Fabiola.Get in touch with Chicagoland Cat Rescue Discussion Group, maybe they can help.

Auto Body Repair Recommendations

Our 2003 Toyota Corolla has finally started to show signs of rust on the body. Can anyone please recommend a local body shop that does minor repairs?

In the past EveryBlock helped me to find an auto repair shop that is the best! Hoping that lightning might strike twice.

  • the poster is referring to a rust repair.
to give deeper insight on cost, those that had work done at any of the places listed

    was it a rust repair?
what was the damage to your car?
what was the total cost for the repair?

  • Thank you Inactive user. Yes, it's for a natural rust issue, not general auto repair.
