In 1960, McKee Foods founder O.D. McKee was trying to come up with a catchy name for their new family-pack cartons of snack cakes. Packaging supplier Bob Mosher suggested using a family member's name. Thinking of what could be a good fit for the brand, O.D. arrived at the name of his 4-year-old granddaughter Debbie. Inspired by a photo of Debbie in play clothes and her favorite straw hat, he decided to use the name Little Debbie® and the image of her on the logo. Not until the first cartons were being printed did Debbie's parents, Ellsworth and Sharon McKee, discover that their daughter was the namesake of the new brand.

It has corrupted the authorities and everyone in "charge". It's very sad who knows anymore who is "good or bad".@weebis you are so right on with your comment worse run city/county in the nation. I have nothing holding me here and I am for sure going to be lifting myself out of my comfort zone to move out of here. Giving so much money to this city and for what. I bet the segregation won't be happening in certain areas such as the one the mayor
Lives in. He will continue to keep himself and loved ones in there own "perfect" city living. People have no respect anymore and don't care they live for basically free and it has came to the point where they feel like it should be given to them and it should be given to them wherever they want and hey if they want someone else's things they feel they can take it or destroy property because you ask them not to sit on your porch or your car it's there world and we just live in it. Call the police for these reasons and they look or speak to like what's the problem here don't waste our time for nonsense they stole your converter on your car sorry maybe you shouldn't park it on the street it's all just pathetic and just continues to get worse.

As this city, county, and state circle the toilet, Arena's 'Gangbanger Paradise' at 5151 N. Northwest Highway will be the crowning turd for the northwest side demise.

Gunfire by violent felons released by Dart, not prosecuted by Foxx, coddled and celebrated by Emanuel and Preckwinkle will become the 'crickets of the night,' along with the sirens of responding ambulances and squad cars.

Bravo. Shakespeare couldn't have written a better tragedy himself.

BREAKING NEWS!!! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE...

From the Office of Mayor Wrong E. Manual

As a result of an intensive 10 year study from the University of Chicargo, the city council has voted for the immediate removal of all automobiles, vans, trucks or similar devices from within the city. The study clearly shows that 100% of all accidents involving injury to pedestrians and motorists or their passengers are associated with self powered motorized conveyances. Therefore, the only sound remedy is the removal of all such machines from our community.

Effective on December 1, 2017, any person possessing or operating an automobile, van, truck or similar device within the city limits will be arrested on felony one charges of willful pubic endangerment under the new municipal code (under home rule exception). There will be no second chance.

New transportation permits will be available for single or multiple horse, mule or bicycle drawn carriages at a rate varying from $50-200 per year. There will be an additional fine for failure to remove animal feces on the roadway of $50 per incident.

Because of their ability to exceed new speed limits of 10 MPH, genetically engineered transportation animals are forbidden and if suspected, a DNA sample will be taken. If found in violation, an additional fine of $1,000.

For those citizens requiring handicapped exemptions, rickshaw allowances may be granted upon full vetting and approval. Prevailing applicants must demonstrate they cannot walk from the corner of State and Madison to clerk's desk at city hall without having a heart attack or stroke.

Regardless of conveyance form, a city sticker priced at $500 per year will still be required for each axle of a conveyance.

Existing boot and impoundment ordinances will remain in force as modified for the new forms of conveyances.

Stay tuned for more details... LOL!

Boarded up apartment bldg on 3700 Central?

Does anyone know what gives with the boarded up apartments on 3700 (ish) Central. Looks like a gut to condo and they're waiting for all tenant leases to expire? Been this way for a long while now and is not a pretty sight.

  • If you are referring to the one on Byron/Central, it is a huge eyesore. I believe former slumlord had a ton of code violations that where tied up in court and never corrected and then home was foreclosed. Now it sits there as an eyesore. Hoping some developer buys it up and turns it into a nice rehab.

Mental Health Therapy Friendly Office Space in the area?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had suggestions of available rental space for a mental health therapy office in the Old Irving park, Kilbourn park, Irving Park, and Portage Park areas. I am more than happy to sublet from existing practices. I am hoping to find an office suitable for individual and family therapy, and it would be amazing to find a group therapy space as well.

Thank you so much for your time.

Incident in alley@ 10:20 pm

In the alley between Roscoe in Henderson an SUV with at least two guys in it and one guy walking with a girl his arms around her I heard the girl screaming called 911 the cops came the SUV went down through the alley it's a dead end and I seen the guys jump out of the car, and jump a fence by the train tracks, does anyone know what happened?

  • Checked the scanner. Call came in around 10:20 for battery in progress in the alley 4300 block of Roscoe. When cops showed up everyone was gone

  • Thank you for calling 911. Too many people ignore these sorts of things and/or assume someone else is calling.

They weren't the most attractive islands, but they were useful. And how wasteful of time, resources, and money to remove them after only a month or so? What gives?

Then she prattled on about her grooming and dress. I guess if you wear pantsuits and pander to the far left, then you're a smart blonde in Alexa's world.

Maybe she's jealous, you don't see blonde's going to the hair salon to have their hair dyed brown.

Amazon HQ2

Is Chicago in line to win the Amazon HQ2 sweepstakes? How would this affect the city? The Lincoln Yards site along the Chicago River has been most talked about. The site will have a new Metra stop, water taxi and 606 trail extension. So what about housing? The addition of 50,000 jobs will obviously increase demand. In the seven years since Amazon established it's first HQ in Seattle, home prices are up 83% and the average median price for a home is 700k. Average median price for Chicago is 306k. Anyone owning a home now could see a huge jump in equity. Same for anyone who buys before Amazon announces the winner next year.

So our next door neighbors and their kids think they own the block. They have no respect for others' property. Aside from their garbage ending up in our yard (from eating/drinking soda and throwing the wrapping/cans on the ground or over the fence on our property), our bigger issue is with them causing physical damage to our home. I understand that kids are kids - we have a 4 year old, but they insist on playing soccer or baseball either in front of our home or in their driveway. Either way, the balls always end up hitting our home and windows. We just replaced all of our windows including a large bay window (which cost a pretty penny) and we are getting ready to put new siding on. But I'm constantly out there talking to them about not playing ball in the sidewalk and hitting our house; there is a field 3 blocks away. These kids (ranging from 7-13) don't give 2 sh*ts about what I tell them (I'm always being polite and respectful when I speak to them). Their parents also don't care because they are usually outside and can see that the balls are hitting our house, cars, etc. and yet, they don't do anything about it. they only yell at the kids if the ball hits their home/car.

Anyways, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect others to respect your property and not cause damage to it. Is there anything else I can do? This may seem petty to some but it really pisses me off.

New Lead Partners for Northwest Portage Walking Museum
The American Indian Center (AIC) and the Chicago Public Art Group (CPAG) have joined PPNA as lead partners to work on realizing the walking museum. Their assistance is key as they bring important expertise and organizational capacity to this project. CPAG has applied for a grant from the Chicago Community Trust to fund two museum installation sites at the Chicago and Des Plaines Rivers and will learn in late September if the grant has been approved. Together with the AIC and CPAG, we have convened a steering committee with representatives from other organizations that have also joined the effort to advance this project.

Northwest Portage Walking Museum Represented at Chicago Biennial
PPNA is also excited to announce that Perkins+Will, a Chicago architectural and design firm, has offered their design services to support the walking museum. They have taken up the idea in a big way, creating design concepts for the walking museum that will be on display as part of the Chicago Biennial Between States exhibit at the Chicago Architecture Foundation Gallery at 224 S. Michigan Ave. The exhibit is free and open to the public from September 19th to December 31st and we encourage all to attend.

Needing to liquidate our Quinceanera Gowns

I have a bridal and social occasion shop in Portage Park (Kasia's Bridal & Special Occasion Boutique). I am looking to liquidate my quinceanera gowns/department to reinvest in divisions we just seem to do better in and that's bridal, bridesmaids dresses, eveningwear and prom. I am not sure how to better market these beautiful gowns other than just by word of mouth, at this point. We have some 800 beautiful ball gowns in-stock, in various colors and sizes. All are...

All are brand new or like new, that I am willing to sell at 50% off, making them less expensive than any other shop (or website for that matter). If you're looking for a gown, or know someone celebrating an event in which a gown like this is customary, please pass our name along with this 50% off promotion - I would love to re-merchandise our store to cater to what sells better.
Thank you in advance and cheers!

  • @Kathy L.: If you make a post on your FB page, PPNA would be happy to share it.

  • I posted it earlier today on my @kasiasbridal Facebook page, Instagram and on Twitter. Thank you to everyone passing this along, it's working - we have people calling booking appointments and walking out with smiles and gorgeous gowns!!! Thank you - would love to sell all of these!!

Call your county commissioner to tell them to vote no for the sugar tax

There is a vote at next weeks county board meeting. Please call your commissioner and tell them to vote NO for this tax. This tax is nothing more than a tax to keep the bloated county government going.

  • You should be really upset with the Federal Government for givings subsidies for corn syrup. Your money is being used to create the sugary drinks and then you're being taxed additionally for their purchase.

    That's double taxation baby!

Belmont Central Fest

Excited to check out a local street festival, my partner and I walked down to see what it was all about. A stage blasting loud music, a few food stands and and handful of carnival/fair rides.

Excited to check out a local street festival, my partner and I walked down to see what it was all about. A stage blasting loud music, a few food stands and and handful of carnival/fair rides.

What surprised and shocked me most was the poor ponies that were being held hostage in a small enclosure providing amusement and rides. Ok -- I know this doesn't seem that bad, but you need to understand the environment in which these poor ponies were subject to.

They were in this small small fenced area being forced to walk in a tight circle for hours and hours providing rides to the few spectators that actually wandered up. Not only were they in a small space, they also had no horse shoes, their poor hooves were cracked, and you could clearly see that they were tired as they lifted their back hooves to an angle trying to alleviate the strain from standing for hours on this asphalt road. It was sad and heartbreaking to see these poor guys standing there in such agony for our mere amusement.

Now, on the other side of Central was a small camel also being exploited for our amusement. This camel was muzzled and, again, forced to walk back and forth on the hard asphalt for hours. I decided to ask the gentlemen who was managing the camel rides about the condition of the ponies and how it wasn't humane that they were being forced to walk in such a small space for hours on asphalt without at least horse shoes to protect hooves. I immediately was greeted a hasty defense and was told it wasn't any of my business what the company name was nor where they were based out of.

I decided to leave it at that and photograph the poor conditions of these animals and document the clear signs of exhaustion.

It's crazy that the city has allowed such a horrid thing to be included as part of the venue. I intend to email the alderman's office and make it clear that this type of entertainment shouldn't be allowed in the future.

  • I'll never be your beast of burden.

  • Just because it isn't part of your culture doesn't mean it should be ignored. Part of being members of the human race includes learning from our mistakes and making changes to be more humane and we should be becoming more enlightened not more regressive. If the supplier of the animals...

Part of being members of the human race includes learning from our mistakes and making changes to be more humane and we should be becoming more enlightened not more regressive. If the supplier of the animals felt he was doing the right thing, he would have provided information as to the owner. Please keep us updated, Gerald. We can all contact the alderman. If he can't provide information, he should have to look into the issue.

Nanny-share

I am the nanny for this nanny-share. One of the munchkins I watch is leaving to be with her big sister. I am looking for a child that needs care during the day.
I am located by Addison & Austin. There is more individual attention and less sickness in a smaller environment. If you are interested feel free to contact me via email or text.
