So, we had our old detached garage facing the alley behind our house completely demolished and rebuilt almost exactly a year ago because it was completely falling apart. It's nothing fancy, but broke our bank and it works.
Less than a month after it was built, I noticed the first major ding on the garage door… Fast forward a year, and the garage door is severely dented, dinged, warped and getting worse by the week. It is very apparent that our neighbor across the alley from us is using our garage door as a stopper when they back out of their own driveway. But, we’ve never received a visit or a note... no one has attempted to take responsibility for what I image to be at least a dozen pretty major impacts and who knows how many smaller “taps” at this point.
My husband has walked around to knock on their front door, but as the old adage goes: the lights are on, but nobody’s home. And frankly, I’m really worried about confronting them… If these people have no concern for damaging our property over and over like it’s some kind of joke, I worry about my two small children. What kind of people have such a blatant indifference toward their neighbors?
I called 311 and was sent to the non-emergency police line. The guy I talked to was sympathetic but said gathering evidence was the key. Once we have evidence, we can bring it in to file a report and go from there. I have an IP security camera ordered, but I’m worried our wifi won’t stretch all the way to the alley, my dad suggested hiring a private investigator – does anyone have experience with anything like that?
However this goes, I can’t imagine a good outcome. Either we’re total chumps that just take this beating or face possible retaliation. It’s a complete garbage fire either way. I guess I’m turning to my Everyblock neighbors for encouragement or any ideas I may be missing.
Thanks for reading!

Waveland, that’s great to hear! We were struggling with where to put the module - upstairs back bedroom sounds perfect. My calls to 311 and local police both had the same instructions: gather evidence first, then come in and talk about filing a criminal damage report after that.
Paul, unfortunately you DO need a strong wifi signal to run this type of camera. There are other kinds of wired systems that don’t need WiFi though. They tend to be more expensive though.

Irving Park and Long Street Closure

According to the city website, this is scheduled through 5/7. These closures are frustrating for everyone. However, when you choose to cut through the side streets and you get stacked up 10 deep trying to cross Laramie during rush hour, please don't think that laying on your horn will get the cars moving any faster. Perhaps sticking to the main arteries is a better option for you. Or just please have a little courtesy for those of us living on...

Hotel That Can Accommodate Large Moving Truck

Hey Everyone,
My mom is moving out to the area this June, but they are driving her stuff out here in a large Uhaul or Penske type truck. Does anyone know of any hotels out by O'hare/Rosemont that has a parking lot or garage that can accommodate a truck of that size for one night? I know there are lots downtown that can, but I wouldn't be comfortable having all of her stuff in a lot downtown overnight. I'm open to downtown hotel recommendations as well, if they have a private parking structure that would work.
I've tried to work it out with my HOA but they will not allow us to park the moving truck in the building's lot overnight, so I'm trying to come up with a contingency plan. We'd prefer not to have to unpack 60 boxes and several heavy loads of furniture immediately after making a cross-country trip.
Any thoughts or ideas appreciated. Thanks!
-
@Paul, we did and we’re not interested in that option because of timing issues. Most of those cross country movers move multiple people’s stuff at a time. The trucks only leave when full. We don’t want an extended time frame of possible delivery and quite frankly have heard many horror stories from people who have used movers for cross country moves. YMMV.
-
Nikki my son had to do something thing stayed at the motel 6 which is location at Riverroad and Lawrence have a parking lot that you could park your trucks and have cameras all around so it will be safe

Tree Trim vs. Removal

I am noticing some of the orange no parking signs from Dept of Forestry. They are sporadic though, not on a full block like I have seen before. Is there anyway to determine if a tree is slated for removal vs pruning? I see one with a blue tag on it (think it means its been treated for a disease), but no markings/tags on the other trees, yet they have the orange signs on them also. Thanks for any info you can provide.
-
Dennis 30 year Jefferson Park resident
No need to be negative, Dan G. Poster asked a simple question. My answer to poster is that I thought trees that have been treated have red tags. Not sure what the blue ones mean, but you can as at the city's website--Forestry.

Orange paper signs posted to restrict parking during day of pruning or removal. To make ample clearance for equipment. Since city no longer paints green solid circle on trunk of tree being removed, any one of trees sporting orange sign could be cut down. Chicago has also began culling healthy treated ash trees. Treated trees have Blue, Red, Purple, Bronze, Silver dog tags.
So if you want to keep your treated parkway ash...as our cities community Tree historian, along with being a volunteer Openland's Treekeeper. I am presently working with an official Forestry Representative, to allow property owners to continue protecting their parkway ash with treatment. Waving requirement for costly permit needed by your hired professional arborist.
Be aware that our city Water department regularally culls healthy maturing trees, in order to make wide clearance for machinery. As in past, workers damaged trees so badly. They had to be removed anyways. Well...now you know!

PERMANENTLY CLOSED!It was decided yesterday at a meeting with me, 16th District Police Commander Bill Looney, City of Chicago Asst. Corporation Counsel Lindsay Baker and Club Red's owner and her attorney, that the club would permanently close and NOT RE-OPEN!I realize that this establishment has been a source of consternation for area residents for many years. Since I became 38th Ward Alderman 3 years ago, it became apparent that this situation needed to be addressed for the good of our neighborhood. It is not under construction as some say but is permanently closed.

I listed an apartment for rent a couple of years ago. I was told that this area is listed as an "Opportunity Area" and received many calls asking if I take Section 8 vouchers. One person had more to spend ($2200) than I was listing the place for ($1800). The person asked if I would take the money and include all utilities. I refused. That is a little snapshot of how some of it works and could mean more Section 8 people are moving here with Section 8 and paying above market rate (unless my place was underpriced). Whatever the case, I refused the Section 8 and found tenants that paid without a vouhcer at the lower price. A friend is listing a place near St. Pascal and was told his area was an Opportunity Area also so that category at least stretches from East of the park to St. Pascal. My guess is some landlords take the higher price with Section 8 voucher and more have moved into the neighborhood.

Please view the attached photo for the area. Did Google make this up or is it a real neighborhood nearby I just have never heard of?

Chicago is made up of many townships. Townships are comprised of “neighborhoods.” Some overlap and some neighborhoods took on a township name. As Chicago expanded these townships saw more advantage to joining the city. Some anomalies exist... Harwood heights etc. Luther north high school took on Martin Luther College and the area simply stop being Martin Luther and never affiliated with Martin Luther King.

LB -- sorry to learn of your frustrations. Anyone feeding and housing outside cats should behave responsibly and TNR the cats + newcomers.
Surface treatments might help deter cats from 'relieving themselves' in your yard. Cats dislike the scent of citrus. You can scatter lemon or orange peels in your yard. I'd opt for Citrus essential oil and make a spray (with witch hazel as a base). Also lavender - either actual plants or an essential lavender oil spray. Alternatively, cayenne pepper may work. Any surface treatment needs to be reapplied after snow/rains.
-
I think having the ferals neutered (go through a TNR program) would help immensely. Not only do males mark territory but with their hormones, their urine is quite pungent. Once neutered both of those elements should be eliminated along with no more reproducing.

Public Safety Survey Results

The results of our Public Safety Survey are in. Attached are jpegs of the results or you can click on the link for a printable pdf.
Please feel free to share the file. We want more officers, our response times show the need, but we also need to be placing those calls to 911 more than we are.

I agree we can use more officers, however I wouldn't burden the 911 system with non-emergency calls to make the point.
A method many municipalities have successfully used is the hiring of non sworn personnel to handle calls that don't necessary require a sworn officer. -

No one is suggesting to make non emergency calls to 911, however the Commander himself has said if you see something suspicious to please call it in and let the police and OEMC decide if it warrants an officer to be dispatched. They do prioritize the calls. Also, they (police)...

They do prioritize the calls. Also, they (police) have noticed that lots of people in our area say they don't always call 911 because they "assume" other neighbors have or that even though they think something is suspicious they are concerned they will be "bothering" the police. Again the Commander has said, when in doubt call, THEY will make the decision and prioritize the calls. After all they are trained in these situations most civilians are not.

Anthem Development at Central and Waveland pulls out

I found out from a neighbor that the planned Anthem memory care at Central and Waveland has pulled out of the deal. What bothers me is that this happened back in October. Why didnt the developer Bernard Edelman and Alderman Villegas let us know? It’s been 5 months. What’s the secret? Here is the email that was on another neighborhood groups site that someone got from Anthem.

Read Dunning School

Construction and land clearing is underway at the corner of Irving and Oak Park. Yet, no one knows what the finished product will be, or who it will serve. Is this mystery school going to be a new 4 year high school serving the local area, or an annex for Taft High School? Or a high school at all? Why can't someone answer this question? Why is this project shrouded in secrecy akin to the Manhatten Project?

Dunning was named the #1 neighborhood in America by Redfin. With a decades long need, is there any sound reason for not designating this school for Dunning? The idea that we're going to plunk down a freshman annex that only serves the residents of Edison and Norwood Park is deplorable.
An open letter to the Dunning community might explain the situation best.
From: The City of Chicago
To: Dunning residents
Here is a nice shiny brand new high school, beautifully landscaped, paid for with your ever increasing tax dollars, that once your children reach high school age, will not be allowed to attend. Do however, enjoy driving by it on the way to dropping your kids off at Steinmetz. If Steinmetz isn't to your liking, might I suggest a home equity loan, or a second job to help pay tuition at St.Pats. Or how about a move to the burbs? Now, don't get upset, I know a good real estate agent (I gotta a guy!) and you can list your house in late March as your child approaches 8th grade graduation. And yes, we see that Portage Park has grown up considerably in the past few years, and we admit your Schorsch Village tudors are adoreable. However, our over-crowding problem at Taft simply must come first.
This is what the residents of Dunning are left to conclude from continued silence from city leaders.
