The Zoning Committee on Tuesday rejected a development proposed for 8535 W. Higgins Road in the O’Hare neighborhood to construct a seven-story building with about 300 housing units and, later, an office building. It would have contained 30 affordable housing units.

Yesterday, we scored another victory in the fight against high-density development. The proposal to develop 297 apartments at 8535 W. Higgins was officially denied in Zoning Committee and by the City Council. Last year, we were also successful amending the zoning at 8601 W. Bryn Mawr. This property was rezoned in 2012 by the previous 41st Ward Alderman to allow the development of 397 apartments. This area of the 41st Ward already has a inordinate amount of density and it’s impact has overwhelmed the local school, Dirksen Elementary. Adding another 694 apartments would have been detrimental to Dirksen. Thank you to the Dirksen LSC members and residents that came to speak at the meeting as well as all of the 41st Ward residents who have shared their opinions with me regarding this development. I am honored to serve as your Alderman. I will always represent your interests and be YOUR voice in City Council.

Residential project near O'Hare shot down by Zoning Committee
A divided City Council Zoning Committee on Tuesday shot down a developer's proposal to build a seven-story, 297-unit luxury apartment complex near the CTA's Cumberland Blue Line station after an emotional debate about affordable housing. Last year, the Zoning Committee shelved the M-shaped building at 8535 W.

  • I'm happy to say that I voted for an alderman who cares about his constituents.

    Thank you, Alderman Napolitano!!!

Narural vs treated water

My plants grow much better with rain water. If I use chicago water they still grow but not as well. This would be a nice research project for a school that's in the farming program.

I, too, am sorry to hear about your missing cat Ramses. I will keep an eye out. In the meantime,

I must relay a cautionary tale: our neighbor's cat ended up locked in someone's garage for 2 weeks at a time TWICE because the cat was an "outdoor cat." I know cats like to go out, but vets recommend that they NOT go out. My personal experience is that my older cat, 15 yo Tigey, went out ONE TIME on a leash with me and my husband to our backyard for an hour, rolled in the dirt and developed "Farmer's Disease." People can catch this too, by the way. It is a serious bacterial infection. Tigey developed a large, pus/blood filled boil on his neck (the main first symptom). Even tho he was old, the vet operated to remove the boil and its contents. After only ONE WEEK, another huge boil appeared. The vet operated AGAIN (with anesthesia, which is life-threatening to older cats, due to their compromised immune systems). Sadly, it did not work For eight months, I often lay with Tigey in the basement in the evening on soft fleece. We'd look into each other's eyes and I'd pet and kiss him. He looked so sad. He became weak and we had to have him euthanized. He had always been my favorite cat. He was the sweetest, most loving cat I know.

So, think twice before allowing any cat, but especially a cat over the age of 9 go outside at ANY TIME. Hope you find Ramses!
