missing mail

Has anyone else been having trouble with packages being delivered? I've never worried about packages getting stolen, but the week of August 15th we had three packages marked as "delivered" that were nowhere in the mail area, including a package that was definitely small enough to fit in our mailbox. Is it the postal service? Is someone stealing packages?

  • I'd visit the postoffice (either online or in person) and file a claim. That way they'll start an investigation, and hopefully you (or the seller) qualify for reimbursement. I'd also consider sending items to your work instead (if feasible), or try Amazon locker/UPS locker. USPS is rolling out their own...

I'd visit the postoffice (either online or in person) and file a claim. That way they'll start an investigation, and hopefully you (or the seller) qualify for reimbursement. I'd also consider sending items to your work instead (if feasible), or try Amazon locker/UPS locker. USPS is rolling out their own locker system as well, but not available yet in 60630. USPS/UPS does have a normal PO box, and IIRC they will hold larger items behind the counter (if you decide to rent a small PO box). Double check that, but my tennis racquet stringer currently works this way.

  • I'm sorry this is happening to other people, but relieved that it's not just me. I got a refund from Amazon and reordered to an Amazon locker location-- it was so easy, I wish I could get all of my packages that way. I've used the UPS store before for ala carte package receiving, I might just have to go back to that.

Has anyone else had this problem?

One night this summer, while my car was parked right in front of my house, a noise woke me up. It was 3 or 4 AM and I wasn't thinking or moving very quickly. After maybe 30 seconds of wondering what the sound was I realized it was my car's alarm. I looked out the window and confirmed it. No other car or people were near. I got my keys, shut off the alarm and went outside to the car to see what happened to it. I had left the windows open enough to stick an arm through (something I had never done before) and unlock the door latch.

The console and glove compartments were tossed. All the junk and papers in them were strewn across the seats and floor. Nothing seemed to be missing.

I tried to be more careful about closing the windows and locking the car, but it happened again a few weeks later. Can't be sure if I had left the car unlocked, but I must have since there was no sign of forced entry. Again nothing was apparently missing.

It seems like a crazy coincidence that the 2 nights I leave the car unlocked are also the nights that someone happens to be prowling around our neighborhood for easy cars to break into. Is there a pattern of this happening?

  • You should also consider publishing this on Mayfair Neighborhood Chicago FB page. You'll find your neighbors on that page, they talk about things like this all the time and are lovely people.

  • I'm in Jefferson Park and it has happened to me twice this summer. I did file police reports both times. Interesting enough, my car was locked and alarm set both times -- somehow they defeated the lock and alarm and got in undetected. Little was taken -- they emptied my coin cup both times, and took a few small hand tools for my work the second time. It is a little unnerving.

Free for the first person to claim it. It's not very heavy. Comes with waste hose. Needs supply line. It's a direct wire model. It comes the junction box, but you'll need to wire it up (you can't just plug it in.) Manuals should be available online.

Only conditions I have: you have to load it into your car/truck yourself, and I never want to see it again. :)

Found two bags of groceries on the sidewalk (Two HUGE bags of raisins).

Someone who shops at Aldi left two full bags of groceries on the sidewalk in front of my house today. Noteable contents were a huge bag of raisins, some off-brand Kraft Dinner, beef stew, and a can of jellied cranberries.

I put them on top of the little free library at the corner of Kasson and Sunnyside if someone is looking for them.

  • After a day, I took the groceries to a food pantry on Damen. The folks there thought the groceries looked like something they would have handed out.

  • Good that you picked them up. Raisins are among the most dangerous foods for dogs. Not good to leave them on the sidewalk.

Two incidents occurred on Sunday around 2 p.m. in the 6000 block of North Ridgeway Avenue and around 2:45 p.m. in the 4200 block of North Spaulding Avenue, according to a news release from the Chicago Police Department.

In both burglaries, an unknown man knocked on the victim’s door purporting to be building a speed bump in the alley behind the victim’s home. While the victim was distracted, other people entered the homes and stole property, the release said.

Suspects are between two to three white or white Hispanic men who are between 30 and 45 years old. They are between 5-foot-5 and 5-foot-7 in height.

The suspects were seen driving away in a black jeep or a black van, according to the release.

Shared sidewalk program timeline?

Hello everyblockers,

I am a participant in the city of Chicago shared sidewalk program and anxiously awaiting my new concrete (it's in pretty bad shape). I have been hoping it gets done sooner rather than later. Today to my amazement, the sidewalks are spray painted marking where the concrete will be replaced.

I'm just wondering how much longer before they come and remove the old concrete so I can take a day off of work to ask if they'll replace two extra squares that are on my property. My thinking is that I can pay the contractor out of my pocket to do extra squares. Does anyone have an idea of when they'll come out and do it from this point? Should be soon? Anyone out there that has an idea? Any indications would help greatly. Thanks in advance

Luis- any good luck yet? ;) I'm hoping bc once you get yours we aren't far behind and I want to make sure I'm in town when some of it happens.

  • I'll put it this way, if they moved any slower...they'd be in reverse :-(

Seeking Seat Sacks!!!, a project from Mrs. Stillwell
My students need seat sacks. They will be using tables this year. They need to be able to store their school supplies. I teach fourth grade on the Northwest Side of Chicago. My students come from many different countries, cultures and walks of life. This year my students are using tables.

Greetings Neighbors!

As a veteran I get asked often by neighbors about how best to support our vets. Well, here's another really great way to do just that: The Midwest US Valor Games will be held in Chicago August 23-25. See more info below and on the attached flyer.

And, whether you can make it or not, I urge you to generously share your hard earned dollars with contributions to the cause of our wounded warriors AND their families. This...

This is part of the real and hidden cost of military action - our veterans and their families keep on paying the price of service well after their return to our soil. We are obligated to support our sisters and brothers who have served on our behalf.

As always, questions? Please ask. Jac Charlier at jac.charlier@gmail.com

The Valor Games Midwest is an introductory adaptive sports competition for veterans and service members with physical and visual disabilities.

Hosted by the Chicago Park District, the 2016 event will take place August 23-24 and is open to any individual with a disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs including amputation, spinal cord injuries, visual impairment, traumatic brain injury, permanent orthopedic injuries, and those with post-traumatic stress disorder. The Valor Games Midwest will only be open to residents from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
