Politics as usual in 39th Ward

Alderman Laurino is Rahm's handpicked President Pro Tempore in the City Council, meaning she presides over meetings when he is not there. She doesn't like telling anyone how she spends the $1.32 MILLION of menu money that she gets for the 39th Ward. Citizens shouldn't have to fill out a FOIA application to find out how taxmoney is being spent. Some Wards practice participatory budgeting to let constituents weigh in on how money is spent. Not in 39.

Aldermen defend attempt to clip Inspector General's wings
Chicago aldermen came out of the shadows Monday about their campaign to clip the wings of Inspector General Joe Ferguson even before he's even cleared for takeoff. Two days before a showdown vote on a long-stalled ordinance empowering Ferguson to investigate aldermen and their employees, president pro tempore Marge Laurino (39th) explained why some aldermen want to make program audits off limits and confine Ferguson to investigating potential violations of the law.

  • Restaurant Depot is in a large building that is suited for it. But some retail would be good in the storefronts along Lawrence. As much as we don't care for all the wholesalers they are at least businesses. Many other areas have many more empty storefronts.

I think we deserve to be represented. I continue to be amazed (but sadly not surprised) that even after barely winning her last election the alderman has no desire to listen to her constituents and feels no duty to us tax payers (our money right?) to be accountable about how she's spending OUR money. How is this democracy if our elected officials tell us we don't have a right to know? And she's afraid of being embarrassed? What is she doing with our money that won't stand up to scrutiny? She says she's for empowering the IG then votes to severely limit that power; she says she's a "co-sponsor" to Ald. Rosa's resolution to put surplus TIF money back into the general fund for the schools then votes to kill it by sending it to committee rather than putting it out on the floor. This has been her MO for 20 years and look where we are. I want honest leadership. I want someone who is listening to me, to the community.

Have A Heart

I'm sure there are plenty of people in this area that really need affordable housing. I think this site would be perfect for studio's and 1 bdrm apts for Vets and Seniors over 55. Rents are extremely high now. I would rather see them here than homeless. The people that don't want this in their area should really reconsider, because one day it could be them.

  • Part of the question is: can lower-income people be good neighbors? The answer is: it depends. Is the management company proactive? Does its screening of potential tenants include a criminal background check? and a reference from someone who knows the person/family? "Affordable" is one or several steps up from "low" income housing. More money makes it better, makes it more likely the management company is a well-run private entity, not a government cache for incompetents and relations, not somebody who sombody sent..

Voter intimidation in 39th Ward/15th District

15th District State Rep. candidate Jac Charlier who is running against D'Amico was verbally threatened and his volunteers were intimidated at the campaign office today by some nice folks in a Water Dept. van. As you may know, John D'Amico is a supervisor at the Water Department. 911 was called. This is shameful, shameful, shameful, no matter how you feel about the candidates. This is not democracy.
