I know this has been a hot button issue within the community, however, I'd like to dis-spell the myths and or misunderstandings regarding this facility.

With about 800+ signatures on the petition I think the vast majority of residents think this facility is something it's not... A shady hobo drug addict pit stop where patients come and go as they please and will be wandering the streets at all hours of the night.

Actually it's the farthest from what they are trying to achieve and the bullet points from change.org's petition are complete nonsense... and I don't mean that in a condescending manner at all, that's why I'm taking the time out to maybe educate people on what Rosecrance is trying to accomplish.
(I am no way affiliated with Rosecrance nor do I wish to speak for them, I'm just giving you a first person experience as I went through the program 5 years ago at their Rockford facility and have been a clean, sober, tax paying member of society ever since.
Some of the bullet points from the change.org petition are insane

1.First off these residents aren't going to be wandering the streets at all hours of the night. Aside from going to outside AA meetings their day is very structured and they have hours that they will not be able to leave ... 9:00pm - 7:00AM... they are not going to be lurking in the shadows waiting to snatch your children and offer them to the crack Gods.
2. Strangers rotating in and out of the facility on a monthly basis.
If you haven't yet realized it, you live in Lakeview, you have strangers rotating in and out of the 300 bars in your community on a nightly basis.
3. Over crowded dwelling.
I hardly see 25-30 extra humans in lakeview overcrowding.
4. Increased traffic
Um 95% of their patients don't have cars and will likely use public transport.
5. Referring to these human beings trying to better their lives as transients makes them sound like they are sub-human.

The petition states that Rosecrance has no experience in having a facility in a residential area. The Rockford facility is in the middle of a residential area and the residents have never had an issue with the facility since it opened 15 years ago.

Noise complaints..... This is just plain silly. Again these individuals are not going to howling at the moon or hanging out front of the facility smoking and whistling at women on the corner.

Looking at the comments on change.org's petition, they are simply unfounded fears of a community who has never dealt with addiction. I'd like to ask the residents who oppose 25 people wanting to better their lives where they propose they put this facility?

The answer is going to be, I really don't care, just don't put it near me...It's really sad that this many people in a city of such diversity are as closed minded as they are.

The bottom line is the facility has been approved weather the residents like it or not... Remember this is Chicago where Ald + campaign $ = zoning approval. Only time will tell if everyone's fears are unfounded however, I can tell you right now only good will come from this facility.

  • Looks like they keep "closing" it because it takes 10 days to get to the vehicle after the request to tow and it gets moved by that time.

  • Ann in Lakeview 30+ years in Lakeview

The owner of that junk car lives near my block (3400 Marshfield) I and several of my neighbors have in the past reported it to 311. The owner did have 3 junk cars in the past, including a car that was always parked on the 1600 block of Roscoe (that car had "penis" graffiti on two of the windows)

$530K Gets a Duplex Lakeview Loft With an 18' Wall of Windows
If there's anything that the future owners of this spacious loft will find to complain about, it definitely won't be the lack of ceiling height. Open plan condos aren't for everyone, but this duplex unit impresses with its 18' tall wall of windows and amount of natural lighting.

Weekend Events: Turbo Kid, Film Noir, & More
This weekend has a nice selection of noir and weirdness in comparison to the onslaught of horror events running rampant over the past few weeks. It's kind of nice to slow down a bit in September in preparation for the countless glorious things October brings like the 31 Days of Horror Challenge and such.

Urine Trouble: What Chicago Streets Run Yellow Because People Need to Pee
Maybe Cubs games have gotten so exciting that fans can't hold it until they get home. Maybe it's all those overflowing urinals at Wrigley Field from earlier in the season. Or maybe it's more proof of that old saying: You don't buy beer; you rent it.

Rentals and AirBnb

Everyone thank you so much for helping me out this quarter at Medill. I'm wrapping things up and I have one last question.

For those who rent, would you use AirBnb as a way to supplement your rental costs? Why or why not?

Landlords, feel free to chime in as well.

  • Mike Bacos Photographer/Writer Opinions are my own

As of right now, this story will be seen my my professor who is an editor at AP. Maybe I could shop it around to other publications. I got a 95 and 94 out of 100 on my last two stories...so we'll see how this one goes.

If for some reason I win a Pulitzer Prize in 450 words, I definitely have you all to thank :).

I am a landlord and use airbnb... and I use it to rent places in other cities when I travel, it is great for my situation. For those on here worried about who and the type of people you get, how many of you have checked into a normal hotel? Its the same. CC and verified ID, etc...Guests and owners review each other and I don't rent to anyone without a great reputation. Most condo associations have rules that were written long before the sharing economy started back up, they will adapt.
AIrBnB (and the other services) are great only if you have a good situation. That being said, if I went back to long term leasing, I would not allow my tenant to rent the spare room on a nightly basis. As the owner, I have that option. The places I have stayed all over the world, have been from fantastic to barely ok, but I have learned how to get the better places.

CWB Chicago: PLAID BANDIT: Another Bank Robber Targets Local Branches
Yet another person has decided to add "robbing local banks" to their LinkedIn profile. The Chase branch at 3335 N. Ashland was robbed at 4:02PM yesterday by a man who passed a note under a thick pane of bulletproof glass. The teller filled an envelope with cash and slid it back to him...under the thick pane of bulletproof glass.
