Landlord Responsibility?

I contacted my landlord in February about the fact that my smoke detector doesn't work, and then again in March. I am still waiting for a new one. He lives in my building, so one would think he'd be a little more concerned about fire safety. I know it's the landlord's responsibility to provide a smoke detector and since it's only a few dollars, I could certainly go out and buy one, but I'd like to know what my rights are as a tenant and what actions I can take?

How to stop delivery of Red Plum papers?

Has anyone had success in getting the Tribune to stop delivering their Red Plum papers? I've called, posted on Facebook, tweeted, and while they say they will stop the delivery to our address, the papers keep coming. It's frustrating to see these papers piled in lawns, alleys, etc all over the neighborhood, especially with many now rotting from the rain/snow. If you have any advise, outside of tackling the delivery man and taking away his papers, please let me know. Thank you!

  • Anita W. in Wrigleyville 30-year resident

The Tribune probably gets paid based on circulation, so the more ad papers delivered, the higher their rate to the advertisers, and the lower their incentive to stop
deliveries. I also find it annoying as hell, straight into the recycling bin. Totally wasteful.

  • After many requests to stop delivery, I wrote to their What's Your Problem column and they stopped delivering them right away.

CTA's Building Demo Plans Catch Lake View By Surprise

A renter in the 3200 block of North Wilton Avenue along the tracks received a letter, the paper said.

At Beer on Clark, a bar at 3415 N. Clark St., also received a letter on Thursday. Owner Ryan Findlay told the Tribune he thought it would take five or six years before demolition to get underway, but that neighborhood businesses wouldn’t go down without a fight.”

I don't ride the El, because it's not particularly convenient, but one of the things that drives me crazy about the CTA is that there doesn't seem to be a true long-term plan for how the infrastructure will grow and develop. (I'm referring to a plan that spans decades.) I seem to remember that one of the buildings that will need to be purchased/demolished is a 7-year-old condominium (maybe at Wilton & School). Ridiculous to think that CTA hadn't thought of this before construction began on that property...

  • I think this is great! Yes, it disrupts and relocates the people in 16 buildings, maybe 100 people -- but in return, 150,000 people will get a better, smoother, commute, EVERY DAY.

Beware of Energy Plus - Stick with ComEd

I was wondering why my electric bills seemed kinda high. Not crazy high, but more than they should be. I figured it must have something to do with that offer I signed up for to have my energy delivered by Energy Plus. I was a sucker for their airline miles offer. What was going on was that every month their charge went up by mere pennies, but last month the electric bill was about $30 more than it should be....

What was going on was that every month their charge went up by mere pennies, but last month the electric bill was about $30 more than it should be. This winter we all saw higher bills of course because of the brutal winter. If you are using Energy Plus, call ComEd and cancel it. If you are considering signing up, read the fine print and cancel as soon as you can after getting the miles....or better yet, learn from my mistake and steer clear and warn your friends.

  • Adam in W Neighbors Wrightwood Neighbors can't be beat

You can beat the ComEd price by shopping the market. Try Integrys or another company with a fixed price product.

Integrys is actually more expensive than ComEd, Adam. They have multiple hidden charges.

Commercial fishing on lakefront around Belmont Harbor?

Last week I noticed a weird foam about 15 ft out on the water in an extensive ring. I asked a scientist friend who knows about such things. He said that the local fisherman have taken to the disgraceful practice of using fire extinguishers to push out 20 or more lines to catch fish and the foam is a result of the froth from the extinguishers.
Today I saw men dragging big carts of items such as extinguishers, various multi fishing lines, many large buckets and other equipment. etc over to the lakefront. Is this commercial fishing? What are they doing with the fish they catch? Are Lake Michigan fish being sold to local restaurants?

Give me a nice rod and reel setup, a couple of brews, and a 70 degree breezy day and I will take a nice fight from a scrappy fish. What happened to 'anglers'? :)

Anyhow, it isn't a guarantee that everyone is using only compressed air in the extinguishers. However, foam can come from multiple variables and sometimes is pretty normal, especially in the ocean harbors. Niagara falls is beautiful, til you get on the boat, look down and it looks like refuse from washing a bear with shampoo. If it's abnormal for that area (the foam) you can always find a resource to report it to.

As for these fishing methods, there are clear rules as to how many lines/poles per licensed person, how many hooks on each line, daily limit quantity and size, etc. In IL you can have 3 rods per angler and up to two hooks per rod. So technically one lure with two treble hooks constitutes two hooks. If they are toting around 100 hooks with 10 on each line, that's illegal, and if they are using shopping carts I HIGHLY doubt anyone you see is commercial. Commercial actually harvest in worse ways...

In WI, the DNR (dept. natural resources) handles these matters.
I would be more worried about the amount of hooks/lines per person than anything. People like that tend to be haphazard as well. Would be great for that kind of barbed wire to wash up on shore huh?

I find myself asking, with the oncoming of city pensions exploding, the massive taxation and city debt, how is Chicago affording these things? I love city parks, but what about pot-holes that cause accidents? What about taxation that drives businesses and residents to the south?

  • Agassiz Elementary School reviewed by a parent

My daughter is in 6th grade. She writes very well, is a voracious reader, and does well in math. All this while she participates in the after school dance program and the school musical. She also takes piano and voice outside the school. When they say schools are failing kids, I don't know what they mean. She is thriving at Agassiz. From the moment her Dad and I visited the school, I have been happy with what they can do with the kids. Even the autistic kids are able to get on stage and perform something meaningful. The administration is vigilent about behavior and discipline. Even entering and leaving school is orderly.

CTA plans L overpass at Belmont to eliminate bottleneck

“This whole package . . . doesn’t really pass the sniff test,’’ said Steve Johnson, 38, resident of a 14-unit condo building at 3252 N. Wilton targeted for possible demolition. “We’re going to fight this and I’m going to win. I’m not leaving because of this.’’

On the other side of the block, Ellen Hughes, 64, of 3239 N. Wilton, said her building is expected to survive — but with reduced property values and amid a dust bowl of construction.

Pastor with religious message carries cross through Lakeview

"Jesus says I am the way the truth and the life, he invites you to follow him. I pray you hear his voice this weekend, Easter," he preached from the corner of Lincoln and Belmont.

As Bruursema arrived back at his church, at Damon and Wellington, he got a hug from a member of his congregation, and a few honks from people driving by.
