Found Dog

Found this little guy near the corner of 43rd Street and S Indiana Ave around 6:45 this morning. He's been dropped off at Chicago Animal Care and Control at 2741 S Western Ave where he'll be held for 4-5 days and then put up for adoption and/or released to a rescue organization. Please help him get back to his family.

  • Don't forget the reality of euthanasia due to lack of space at shelters or due to not being in perfect health. People, you need to get your dogs microchipped. A dog is not a toy, it is a living being

  • I talked to several neighbors and it appears this dog had been a stray for a long time so he might not have a family looking for him. I called several no-kill shelters before I took him to CACC and they wouldn't accept him as a stray off the street. Because he's small, cute and relatively well behaved, the consensus is he'll find a forever home soon.

Segregation in Chicago won't be solved while anti-"gentrification" sentiment flourishes.

The Metropolitan Planning Council recently published a report of 25 steps we can take to address the segregation epidemic in Chicago.

The Metropolitan Planning Council recently published a report of 25 steps we can take to address the segregation epidemic in Chicago.

Know what's funny? Or, maybe I should say, sad? Nowhere in the report do they address the fact that in today's political/social climate, when 'whites' move into any one given area on the South and/or West sides...they're not welcomed as "segregation busters". No, they're more often called 'gentrifiers'.

It's the new trendy bigotry...and its been cultivated and allowed to fester to the point where, even local alderman have come out amongst the ranks of the Chicago machine to decry its atrocities: "How dare white professionals think they can move into one of these areas!" Think that's hyperbolic? Look at some of the anti-development ordinances being proposed by these political 'leaders' in traditionally underserved communities. Wake up friends. They want to keep these areas economically depressed and artificially deflated to secure votes of their own prosperity - not yours. The first black POTUS can't even open his community center without legions of protests and controversy from the "where's mine!" crowd ... and we think segregation is going to be busted by a few talking points on educational policy and equity?

Nah. This is a top-down epidemic. Years of race-baiting and pandering have created this cultural cancer. Race relations have gotten worse, not better. And this disparity of equity has been created, curated and maintained by the Chicago machine. Let's not forget that.

Tough conversations and new ideas are what will solve these issues. We'll end segregation when we celebrate our individual strengths vs obsessing over our petty differences. And they are just that...beyond petty. White, black, we're all the same. But we can't fight REAL racism when we're too busy chasing fake boogeymen.

Cool. I'm on the southside, too. I was born here. There's a reason why there's a simmering resentment at those who are labelled as "gentrifiers," which I'm trying to elucidate here. It's not that certain 'hoods don't want white people around cuz they're white--it's because it forces poor people to flee to less savory parts of the city cuz they can't afford to live anywhere else.

At the risk of sounding like a Berniecrat, gentrification is a class issue, which is intertwined with segregation cuz it's Chicago. It doesn't matter whether it's wealthy white Canadians/Nigerians/Saudi Arabians moving into the city and buying up property, thereby pricing out locals--all would engender some level of dislike from the anti-gent people (as it should). So your point of: "the one I’ve been making this entire time ... is that it’s quite trendy right now to hate on whites moving into these areas vs thinking we can actually help (and want) to preserve the history and culture, not change it" is not bad in of itself, but it neglects to look at the situation from the perspective of those affected--what solution can you offer to a family of 5 who's been priced out of their Pilsen apartment and they only have a household income of $34K/yr? How would they feel? They wouldn't be enthused by how 'diverse' their neighborhood suddenly became, which would be moot at that point.

  • I can’t (and won’t) apologize for my race and/or my income level. I was born poor, came from nothing and worked for everything I have. You can call it “white privilege”, or use any of the other current buzzwords out there to justify the trendy bigotry I’ve been highlighting, but...

What would I tell a family of 5 making 34k a year? To be quite blunt and honest, I probably would have told them to stop after the first kid and focus on their career/education so they could try and pull themselves out of poverty before they brought more human beings into the world that they couldn’t support .... but call me crazy I guess.

Warmer temperatures have to be on the way. For many Chicagoans, it is what we start telling ourselves around this time of year; it's the mantra that helps most of us get through the sometimes brutal and snowy winters. Thoughts of walking or biking on the lakefront, BBQs in the park-any park-, outdoor pools opening and the last days of school.

There are New Yorkers and there are Californians, both of whom will claim coastal supremacy over our city. But many Chicago people, untempted by either pole, often share a grittier devotion to their city, determined to make it better. Eve Ewing is a Chicago person.
