Yard Clean Up Service?

Recommendations?

  • smartypants Be Nice

Still looking for yard service. Where are all these unemployed Americans people are always talking about? My neighbors and I have trouble getting anyone for many home services. Seems like there are a lot of job vacancies in the industry.

More of an observation, but has anyone noticed a decline in this property? Seems like there's an unusual amount of people in and out of the building, now 2 broken windows that have been "boarded" over. Also, people are living in the garage behind the building, and it's NOT a coach-house. About 2 weeks ago, there was a Sheriff's vehicle in the alley adjacent to the property. This is immediately behind the Philadelphia Church.

  • I think white is default if you are white. If you are another color I think the color you are is your default color.(hence my experience in.the PO..the employee who directed mevwas black..and he directed me to the white guy). N

Okay, this thread is getting off topic. It's good that people are becoming increasingly "woke" these days. So in that sense, yes -- good & worthwhile commentary. At the same time, I'm never really offended when my black/Asian/gay/BI/tranny/whatever friends refer to me as their token (*insert non-standard whatever-they-and-their-majority-friends-are descriptor*) friend....

It just is what it is. I realize in a written word forum where everyone may or may not yet know one another many people nowadays are trending either hyper-pc or overly-sensitive on the reaction spectrum, but may I kindly suggest that we all try to be better at once again giving folks the benefit of doubt for our default setting?

Hate has no home here, after all. ❤

People in front of the soon to be Octavio

What are they pitching? I see them across the way but never make it to the west side of Clark St.

  • Ugh. I have no idea but they stop me all the time and honestly they are kind of jerks when I say I can't talk 🙄

  • I don't know about Octavio being "soon to be." They had the door propped open on Thursday, the interior is completely stripped.

There's always a bunch of clip board folks on that block. Various charities looking for donations.

Can we help this dog? Is Kate (who helped abandoned dog, Susie) still on EB?

I'm posting this in all three of my EB neighborhoods....
This is heartbreaking. Let's please try to help this older 'gorgeous rottweiler' that was dumped by his/ her supposed pet parent (there must be a special place in hell reserved for people this heartless). I'm hoping that at the very least, someone like Kate might be able to at least find a foster home. Sounds like this poor dog might not survive otherwise.

  • Ross..i think you posted in wrong thread

  • Nan

    Ya think?

By the way - I now have all info on the doggie. I will ask OP if she wants to update, or if it's okay, for me to provide additional details.

homeless

I do have sympathy for the homeless. Many are down on their luck, are Vets, some have various illness's. But too many of them are saying "shelters are dangerous". They won't let me keep my dogs. If you can afford to feed a couple of dogs you should be able to house yourself. Or I don't want to leave my boyfriend/girlfriend. Between the two of you, you should be able to live somewhere. Too many lame excuses.

  • Marisa 20 year NW sider

Mute, I still don't understand how an article about one person on the sex offender list has to do with all homeless people making poor choices. There are so many issues related to homelessness. Mental illness, lack of family support and safety net, substance abuse, child abuse. The street becomes their safety net if that is all they know. That is their community and it is scary to lose it. It takes a lot of support which is dearly lacking.

  • You are correct. There's just one bad apple out there. My bad.

Friend's car missing: please be on the lookout

A friend's car has gone missing from its parking spot on the street near Foster and Magnolia. He has checked with the impound lot and filed a police report. Can we please get some eyes on the street for a 1998 Acura Integra, dark blue, license plate Y913023?

Thanks!

  • Does it have a Catalytic converter? Chicago is #1 in the country for stolen Catalytic converters. This happened to one of our cars and we found it abandoned 1 block away. You may want to go up and down blocks in your area and see if it was dumped. Good luck we will keep a look out.

  • Watson Former north-sider, now South Looper

Update: the car was found near 7900 S. Harlem. It was stripped of everything that could be stripped -- engine, door handles, door panels, gear shift, spoiler. The car seat was taken and the trunk emptied (nothing of value in it, luckily).

It was found, ticketed and towed by the Bridgeview police dept. before my friend even knew it was stolen, and because there's no communication between Bridgeview and the Chicago PD on stolen vehicles he got a $50 ticket and (wait for it) $1,350 in storage charges after the tow. He's letting State Farm argue that.

Shrubbery?

I feel like the Knights who say Ni... (Monty Python reference) but I want to get some kind of hedge plant/shrub to grow into a chain link fence. I have seen other neighbors doing it and I love the way it looks (there is a ranch at Balmoral and Ashland that has done this successfully)

any ideas where to buy said shrubs at an affordable price? I love Gethsemane but I would not consider them affordable to buy 10-20 evergreens.

Thoughts about here or out in the burbs or even Wisconsin/Indiana on where to go to get hearty type shrubs?

There's a garden center on Elston around Irving, but I confess that I don't recall the name of it.

Can anyone recommend a trustworthy, highly affordable VW mechanic on the far northside?

Disabled middle aged waitress needs to get car fixed to get to work in the burbs. Please help.

The best mechanics I've ever dealt with, who are also honest and affordable (will send you somewhere else if another place can do the work cheaper) are at Ashland Tire & Auto.

  • Thank you, ChinaCat 💜 They are also my fav. Wish i cd still afford them. Thank you, so much though. Really appreciate very much.

Man sleeping in alley

I have seen a man sleeping in our alley, not behind my house specifically but behind one of the multi-unit buildings on the block. I've seen him several times over the past couple weeks, most recently this morning. I'm just curious about people's opinions - is this a call 911/311 situation? Just suck it up and deal because he has to sleep somewhere? I get a little jumpy going out in my car or taking out the garbage lately because of this, but if I'm just being a baby about this, I will let it go.

  • ChinaCatSunflower

It's not a 311 or 911 call unless the person is committing a crime, on your property, or you are concerned for their safety (i.e. it's way cold outside, they do not appear to be moving, etc). Otherwise, it's really just a part of city living that you'll have to...

It's not a 311 or 911 call unless the person is committing a crime, on your property, or you are concerned for their safety (i.e. it's way cold outside, they do not appear to be moving, etc). Otherwise, it's really just a part of city living that you'll have to live with. David, the man with Tourette Syndrome, decided to live under my deck for a week or so a couple of years back and in that case I did call 911. That's because he was on private property, it was winter and super cold, plus he had a terrible cough and was also screaming all night long which he does due to his condition - I literally didn't sleep for days due to the noise he was making outside of my window. Yes, it took days for the cops to actually come out...and eventually my building manager was the one who had to get rid of him.

There's a guy I see out in the alley behind my place now and he's really nice. He has a southern accent, calls me ma'am, and always asks if it's ok for him to be there. I say "it's your alley just as much as it is mine, have a nice day" and that's about it. Most of these people aren't nearly as scary as you might think.

  • If your truly concerned for him 911/311 won't do a thing but move him to someone else's backyard which doesn't help him. If your concerned for yourself well 911/311 is how to get him to bother someone else.
