  • Color means nothing to me. I have lived in HP where I have been a minority for a good portion of my life. My family is so blended we are like a giant smoothy:) kidding aside. I judge people by their strength of character. I have found most of my neighbors to be honest and hard working people that are just as disgusted with the criminals and gangs that roam our streets.

  • Thanks Ro,
Given my experience working on gang and crime issues in Bridgeport, I feel AAC's comment is ill-informed.
In the immediate area surround my home the gang, and corresponding drug issues, center on houses that have no Section 8 or CHA connections. Each of the "trouble" properties are owned by individuals who own and manage multiple properties in Chicago while living outside of Cook County. If anything, Bridgeport has an Absentee Landlord problem.

  • John W. More equal wealth based on more equal work

Dan, how do you know who has a Section 8 voucher? Is there a Website that lists addresses of properties currently the beneficiaries of that program?

Dharma Garden on Irving is advertised Vegetarian, not being one myself I cant really comment but I have seen vegetables before and know what they are. It would be great to have a Chicago Diner type Vegetarian place around. Frankly, it would be great to have a Chicago Diner type place wherever you are. Is Dharma Garden a million miles from there ? I dont know, i will have to find out...I understand Dharmas can be on again off again, as in, its open...its closed...its open. You can always go a little north to Devon where its Indian Cuisine and nutritious vegetarian opions abound.

As regards diversity, these aren't all new, if its new openings people are talking about. But as far as diversity goes here a list that is probably pretty conservative.

Chinese / Korean : Great Seas / Wok Cuisine / See Thru Kitchen
Mediterranean : Kedzie Cta Stop Triumviratae of Noon O / Semiramis / Salams
Mediterranean + : Caffe & Restaurant Yugoslavia / Restaurant Sarajevo
Thai Food : Aruns ( not quite what it was ) / Thai Valley ( guy in there creeps me out ) / Thai Opart & Thai Oscar ( geographically its a stretch but its delivery friendly )
Vietnamese / Philpino : Nhu Lan Bakery / Isla Pilipina
Mexican : gazillion burrito, taco joints : Lindo Michoacan, place on the other side of the street from Lindos / Gallo Bravo
Supermarkets : Cermak Produce / Harvesttime
Pizza : Ciao Bellos / Spacca Napoli / Pizza Art Cafe
( probably leaving out loads of places...there are so many...its albany park )

As much as i like diversity, I also like american cuisine, whatever that is, something like an occasional quality burger which in reality has been impossible to get in Albany Park. I think Smalls on Albany is perfect. Its a mix up, In fact, the super happy fries are my kind of vegetarian.

( PS : Please add the places you like to go in the nieghborhood, i agree, it would be great to see more good quality places open up and find out about them here on everyblock )

  • Plus, Irving park, west of the river is replete with dubious establishments opening up in recent years. Breakroom is a qualitative break from that ( a welcome one ). I'm happy that its landed in the neighborhood and will go there, eat the food, drink the beer ( its a hard life ) and make up my own mind.
