Water - digestive issues?

Hi all,

I've been living in Albany Park for 3 years and developed digestive issues after about a year of living here. At first I thought I had a bacterial infection from traveling overseas for a brief trip, but when I spoke with doctors they told me I hadn't been out of country long enough and I likely got something here in the U.S. I have wondered if it something in my environment, because my roommate developed similar symptoms within...

Hi all,

I've been living in Albany Park for 3 years and developed digestive issues after about a year of living here. At first I thought I had a bacterial infection from traveling overseas for a brief trip, but when I spoke with doctors they told me I hadn't been out of country long enough and I likely got something here in the U.S. I have wondered if it something in my environment, because my roommate developed similar symptoms within months of moving into my apartment.

Has anyone experienced the following symptoms after moving/living here:

bloating (after drinking water, or eating certain foods*)
gas pain
constipation
diarrhea
naseua (after eating certain foods*)
headaches
weight loss

*My roommate and I have both become much less tolerant of dairy, gluten, or any foods that have fructose and take more to digest (ie: apples, brocolli, as opposed to bananas, potatoes). I no longer drink milk, or eat yogurt, cheese or bread. Neither does my roommate. See "fod-map diet" online.

I am curious if there is an issue with our water or something else in our environment.

Please let me know if you've experienced anything similar.

Thanks!
Albany Park Resident

  • Yes, Rebecca L. It's also common for the intensity of many "sensitivities" and "reactions" to increase with age; what may have escaped unnoticed in childhood can become an issue to be dealt with in later years.

  • I was wondering this same thing! I’ve had digestive problems and food intolerances develop since moving here 3 years ago, but figured I was just getting old 😄 hmmmm

Mythos Shutter?

Mythos' front windows are papered over and a "Coming Soon" sign on the door. I guess all things must pass, but I for one will miss you guys.

A friend and I ate there the last night it was open. The owner told us that ten years was enough for her, but recommended we try her sister's new place on Clark which is fast casual. FWIW the menu at Mythos that night was almost the same as the original one; her street food rebranding didn't work evidently and while originally open during the day, they had stopped lunch service. Friends and I really liked Mythos and are sorry to see it go.
The new restaurant going in seems to be Mexican. I don't remember the name but it didn't appear to be Asian.

  • esinclai Chicago Quasi-Geek, 17 Year Rockwell/Lincoln Sq.

Correct, it is a Mexican place - the signs on the windows a couple weeks back named it as Xochimilco.

Unclear if it is related to the small chain which has other locations in IL (http://www.xochimilcorestaurant.com/).

Did a school bus hit your car this morning at Logan/Western?

I saw a school bus hit the side of a car which was in the turning lane from Logan to Western northbound today around 8am. The bus just kept going. It looked like the mirror was knocked off at the very least - if this was you and you have damages to claim and want any information, send me a message, I have a picture of the bus.

Attempted Car Break-in.

Its getting warm outside and the hoodlums are looking to score some money or items from your vehicles. I caught these 2 geniuses trying to get into my vehicles on 5/7/18 at around 1pm, about 2 minutes after my wife had just got home from dropping off our daughter at Palmer Elementary for Preschool. This happened in the 4800 block of Springfield Ave, just off Ainslie. Just want to give the fellow neighbors a heads up as this is not the first time these dumbasses have gone around stealing items from cars. Play it safe and lock your cars at all times.

Fire across from Logandale School

A fire in the 2900 block of N. Kedzie has left some of our neighbors displaced. The linked article (from the soon-to-launch Block Club Chicago, check them out) has more details and a link to a GoFundMe page set up by a teacher for a student at Logandale who sadly watched her family's apartment burn from her classroom.

I saw some Red Cross workers outside the home while walking by earlier, so I hope these families' immediate needs are being taken care of, but I wanted to share this page for anyone else who feels compelled to help a neighbor in a tragic time of need.

Huge Avondale Fire Leaves Families Displaced, 2 Firefighters Injured
AVONDALE- At least three Avondale-Logandale Elementary students and their parents were displaced and two firefighters were injured in a devastating extra-alarm house fire in Avondale Thursday morning. The fire started around 10:30 a.m. Thursday in an apartment building in the 2900 block of North Kedzie Avenue, directly across from Avondale-Logandale Elementary School and near the Logan Square/Avondale border, according to WGN.

My sons scoutmaster lives next door. The fire crew (CFD) were studs.

  • Indeed Ward, a big thanks to all the firefighters for quickly getting the blaze under control! I hope the 2 firefighters who were injured recover soon.

I'm so glad Ms. Raigoza started the GoFundMe for the student who had to sit there and watch her home burn, I can't even imagine what that must be like.

  • I agree Grace, it broke my heart to read about that poor girl. in the last weeks of her 8th grade year she should be having fun with her friends, getting ready for summer, and getting excited for HS in a few months. I’m so sad for her that she not only lost her home but that she also had to witness it happen.

I’m just hoping these families have the support they need to get back on their feet as soon as possible.

Looking for roofer/ handyman for small job

Hello, I'm looking for a recommended roofer/ handyman to help me put back up a 6ft piece of aluminum fascia that blew off the top of my house from strong winds. The piece I still have and is in good shape, and section is at the top of a 2 story pitched roof but can be accessed from the top of my back porch. It's a smaller job, just needs to be nailed or screwed back in but I'm having a hard time finding someone with time for a small job like this.
Thanks in advance.

Pieces of Dead Squirrels/Birds

I have been finding pieces of squirrels and birds around my house. I noticed a large black bird (I think it's a crow) that appears to be nesting in one of the trees nearby. I suspect that the bird has been killing and eating these animals. Does anyone know if there is something that should or could be done about this? I am also concerned if there might be health/safety risks associated with this problem.

  • It's very unlikely that this Crow or any Crow would be doing this if the animal was alive, they may eat the animal if dead, but not alive! It's more of a Hawk or Owl, doing this, I've seen hawks lurking about in the Park, but no Owl's, also, there's a Coyote around the neighborhood as well so be aware! That Crow is not the Problem!!! Same thing was happening in the Park last season, multiple squirrel's showing up with their heads missing!!! Could be a Fox too!!!

  • PennyPenguin Chillin' out on EB

Agreed. It is the circle of life. Let it be.

  • Carleen Merges in Chicago Single mom concerned about my neighborhood

I have never seen a crow do anything like that BUT I have seen hawks swooping down and grabbing squirrels and rabbits.

Young man selling candy in the parking lot.

He was so pushy so I gave him a dollar just to get him away from me (the candy costs more than a dollar) I told him all I had was a dollar, and then he had the nerve to ask if I could buy him something to eat too. He had nice clothes on and didn't look poor.

It's just annoying because I'm sure he's not selling candy for a good cause. When I came out of the store he was already gone but I'm sure I'll see him, and others, again.

So...how do you guys handle these candy sellers?

  • Next time you see him take the initiative and ask him for some money before he can ask you. Bingo problem solved !!!

  • I've seen several of them lately and sometimes they are in a group of 3 or more. Usually, they are not a legit fundraiser but a way of making money. I reported one group to the alderman, grocery store managers (where I suspected they were buying the candy to sell),...

I reported one group to the alderman, grocery store managers (where I suspected they were buying the candy to sell), and the businesses they would loiter around.

The alderman took action and suggested I call the police if they get even the slightest bit aggressive. Eventually, the alderman did address the issue of the 3 very aggressive kids and I haven't seen them since. Hopefully, they don't return this summer.

yard cleanup suggestions

Hi, we are looking for suggestions for yard cleanup. In the past I've just found someone working in the neighborhood and hired them to do a spring cleanup (aeration, thatching, edging, raking, etc.). This year the only companies I've found have wanted $200 to do a basic spring cleanup for our corner lot. I want to hire someone but really don't want to pay more than about $120 (as I have in the past). Does anyone have any recommendations?

  • We use Imperial Landscaping - I think they charge us about $70 for spring cleanup if I remember correctly. I haven’t received a bill for this year although they’ve already done the work. ‭1 (773) 302-9214‬

  • I should note we don’t have a corner lot so price might differ for you.

I too do not care for crowds and have some medical issues and cannot deal with pushing, etc. When I was/or do take the blue line and trains headed downtown are a bit crowded when they get to Irving Park, I hop on one the other way and head to Jeff park or even Harlem and ride in from there ... at least it helps to usually get a seat ...

SUV driving the wrong way on one-way street

I saw an SUV driving the wrong-way on W Bertreau Ave between N Keeler and N Kedvale. I've seen the same SUV earlier driving the wrong-way on W Belle Plaine Ave near N Keeler. I think this is very dangerous for other drivers and pedestrians, who are not expecting to encounter a vehicle driving the wrong way. I was not able to get the license plate number because it was driving reasonably fast.

Has anyone else seen this SUV?

  • Wicked Fast BMW Average Chicagoan who loves her city

What KIND of SUV? What marquis, what color?
I live right there and have two SUVs and it wasn’t either of us! One of my neighbors saw this and called me thinking it might have been me! I would NEVER! Last Summer someone in a small red something was coming the wrong way on Belle Plaine (I assume trying to get to the highway). I blocked them and refused to give way forcing them to back up and take Kedvale.

  • It was a silver SUV. Don't recall the make/model.
Today I saw a blue Ford Focus going the wrong way in the exact same location.

Community meeting alert

Received this on our door today.

  • RidingThroughRavenswood probably on a bike

I'm looking forward to hearing the presentation. Expansion/change is inevitable and I'm sure construction will be a pain for a little while, but I really think schools are good for the neighborhood. And I'd rather have a three-story school in the neighborhood than another CVS/Walgreens/Target...or, worse, another hideous public storage facility like that one they put in next to the Trader Joe's on Lincoln.

  • @Riding: It's a 4 story building in lots that are zoned for 2 single family homes (with maximum height of maybe 25 to 30ft), i.e. 2031 West Montrose and 2033 West Montrose. And it's not zoned for a CVS/Target/Walgreens/public storage to just pop in. That's not how zoning works.

We have also spoken to Alderman Burnett and he assures us that this will be enforced we also go to the caps meeting and complain to the Sargent . Why are we paying for something that is not working for us? My neighbor takes an Uber because she is scared to drive her car due to losing a space. This is uncalled for .
