chitown - I think you missed my point. Almost all of us have parents/grandparents/great-grandparents who were immigrants. There were those who escaped the Holocaust who came here illegally. There are many in the military with parents who brought them to the US illegally.
So your great, great grandparents weren't anarchists, people with epilepsy, beggars, and importers of prostitutes? Because before 1923, that was about the only kind of "illegal" immigrant there was (unless you were Chinese). To say they came here legally is to say there weren't any immigration quotas. Who's to say if they would have come here if there were.
David 1929, I looked up some more information on the place that provides the help and it seems they are always accepting donations. The work was started by a nice lady named Gretchen Moore and she even drops by homes to pick donations up if they are large in size. Here is the link if you’d like to learn more. I am looking to reach out to volunteer to help myself! :))
RobinWRP- very few victims escaped Holocaust 1938-1945 by "coming here illegally", so not appropriate example. US strictly enforced immigration quotas. In 1939, FDR & US refused to admit over 900 Jewish refugees who sailed from Germany on ship St. Louis, they were forcibly returned to Europe and many perished. US refused to accept thousands of Jewish children from Germany & annexed countries 1938-1939 whose desperate parents were willing to send them to safety, Great Britain however accepted over 10,000 of these children in heroic Kindertransport agreement with Germany. Most of their parents died in Holocaust. Story of St. Louis https://www.ushmm.org/wlc/en/article.php?ModuleId=10005267 https://www.facinghistory.org/defying-nazis/america-and-holocaust
