Hi all:

Our house has an old turret-like corner bay window, dating, as best as we can tell, from approximately the 1890s. It is clad in a kind of metal sheeting, which has been successively painted over the years. A part of the structure was damaged over the winter by ice, and I'm looking for someone who has some experience with vintage ornamental structures like this to come out and assess what we need to do to fix it.

If anyone has any recommendations, please share! Much appreciated.

  • Just a follow-up--the portion that was damaged is metal, and so will require some metal work, as well as familiarity with the materials used in these old structures.

I would reach out to a specialist. Gunny Harboe was recognized as an outstanding Chicagoan overseeing major architectural restoration projects all over the city. Reliance Building, Frank Lloyd Wright homes, etc....Gunny, or his firm, could put you in touch with someone who would know what they're doing and do the project right.

  • Achilles, if you don't mind me asking, has he done any work for you? 'Specialist' always makes me think $$$$. I need a metal cornice repaired or replaced in kind so looking to see what recommendations there are.

Mark, Will you please update with who you end up using?

    Thank you!

No, I've know Gunny for years but he didn't do my home restoration his firm does large projects, like the Rookery building restoration. I would turn to Gunny for a recommendation for a local contractor who does the specific type of detailed metal work your project requires and your century home deserves.

  • Bellhome, will do.

  • Stead Sheet Metal (847-647-6707) did an excellent rehab on our metal cornice last year. Easy to work with.. and very professional and efficient. We highly recommend them.

  • Thanks, magsw! I've set up an appointment with them for next week.

  • Thanks everybody!

  • hey, do post before and after results as that will be so helpful to a. lot of people.

  • Will do.
