I check in this afternoon to EB. All is normal. I go, swim my laps, shower, ride back, open my EB and all of sudden there's Thanks and No Thanks.

Fill me in.

FYI, for EB mods/admins/employees, seeing this, for your next company meeting, to get extra points, tell the powers that be, there should be a place for all EB "members" like us, from all over the USA, to talk amongst ourselves about how EB is run. A forum on the blog (which sucks BTW.) or somehwere else, to talk amongst ourselves about how you design and run EB, and handle the everyday tasks.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    Also...the "report" button is missing.

    If I'm pissed off and want you guys to know about a post I'm irritated with and/or inapproriate, how do I let you know while I'm here on EB?

  • Inactive user

    If there are enough no thanks, the comment gets hidden without EB intervention. Sort of like flagging on CraigsList. Your bunny comment already has been hidden for that reason. So it will be a popularity contest it appears.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    I just gave you no thanks for the fun of it.

  • Inactive user

    Meanie.

  • lame. also plenty of advertising now. The "Strange Fruit" ad is disturbingly distracting.

  • Inactive user

    I don't tend to mute people but now that is an option only if they are the OP.

  • Inactive user

    @B Duggan, I wonder if they're aware of the song and what it's about. Why would you want to associate a product with that?

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    Hmmm? Billy Holiday reference?

    Where? I'm missing something?

    Fill me in, please.

  • Inactive user

    Yes, there's an ad to the right about a strange fruit diet aid.

  • southsideandy A South Side outpost in the heart of the N.W. Side

    What if I log in and Thank somebody, but then my alter-ego logs in half an hour later and wants to No Thanks the same comment?

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    @Jake, I see it now. My guess is the people running the place and also writing that ad are all 20 somethings with not much of a cultural IQ from here in the US.

    For others here's the ad inline on EB:

    http://i.imgur.com/FYcTe.jpg

    For the reference Jake and I are talking about, it's about racism:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strange_Fruit

  • jake, hadn't thought about that. even more disturbing than the the rather yonically cut mango.

  • even more than just being about racism, I believe it was a horrible unbearable fact, part of our cultural & social history here - it wasn't that long ago. I didn't see the wkpdia page - going by memory here so correct me if I'm wrong

  • Inactive user

    Right the strange fruit is the lynching victim.

  • EveryBlock Becca Director of Community Management

    Hey folks, we'll be putting up a blog post about the introduction of "no thanks" on Monday but to give you the CliffsNotes version, we wanted to give the EveryBlock community a bigger role in helping us make sure comments are friendly, neighborly and constructive. Our hope is that it doesn't become a popularity contest, but since this is a new feature, we'll also be making some tweaks to it as it evolves. More to come.

  • You know, Becca, I think this is micro managing at it's worst. I am still having difficulty digesting it. So you can tell me "no thanks" because you don't agree with my point of view? I think I am done on here.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    I just gave Becca a no thanks because I think she needs an updated photo in her profile photo.

    We can't all be 23 years old forever.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    I also just gave Dennis a no thanks to get his goat.

  • so that means if a group of people don't like someone they could no thank them to death on every block? there are several clicks on every block, there could be conspiracies to silence free speech even thou it may be perfectly appropriate in every block guidelines. sounds a little unconstitutional if a comment is not agreed upon by people it could be silenced. just because you don't like something does not mean it isn't any good and the purpose of every block is to have an open mind and open opinions to things in the neighborhood. the one person that is right about everything could be easily ostracized by everyone else including those that just create accounts to bring someone down.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    Take that!

    Thanks you'll see, No Thanks is anonymous. Bet you can't see me while I gave you no thanks.

  • in the spirit of Kenji, could there be the option of No Thanks without anonymity?

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    Post again IU, and I'll give you thanks.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    Depending on the topic I'd wear a crapload of No Thanks as a badge of Eb honor.

    http://www.ifbb.com/images/cb07/175_03.jpg

  • IU, everyblock can do whatever it wants - there's no issue of censorship being unconstitutional here. However, I agree with you, I think, that it'd be lame if enough people can just hit no thanks to make someone's comment disappear.

    I'd like to see something like Comment Purgatory actually, where those comments are sent to so people can still read them if they wish.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    Isn't the concept of Purgatory, a little "heady" for EB?

  • heady?

  • btw, with enough "No Thanks" a comment is replaced with:
    This comment has been hidden because it received a lot of "No thanks." Reveal it.

    and then you just hit Reveal it to see the comment. policy violation comments go to Hell, but I think the no thankies deserve their own spot too. It would be entertaining perhaps to be able to read them all together in Purgatory.

  • I can see where this anonymous vote of non thanks could cause some issues - Kenji I want you to know that it was NOT me who NoThanked your "head" comment

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    that's very catlick of you, @B Dug.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    OK, my stomach hurts from laughing now.

  • It's a good hurt though, right?

  • @becca, adding a negative button (no thanks) can never make anything more positive. a negative button can only make things more negative.
    i would suggest keeping negativity out of every block. we do a good enough job without the extra button.

  • catlick - oh, you're laughing at your clever pun? Or am I over or under getting it?

  • southsideandy A South Side outpost in the heart of the N.W. Side

    I can't wait until NoThanksgiving. I think I heard a rumor that EB is buying someecards in order to prepare for that new "Hallmark" holiday...

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    I just gave you both, IU and B Dug, thanks and no thanks, willy nilly, without paying attention because I was just clicking around for the fun of it.

    Feel free, to do it to me too, throughout this whole thread.

    Other's should chime in to, to test this new +thanks -thanks, system.

    I'll make a new post after this one as an Area 51, so to speak, if others want a post to test on.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    Vanilla or Chocolate?

    Chime in, please.

  • ok, uh, chocolate?

  • i am actually allergic to vanilla, not terribly bad reaction, but allergic none the less. i go for artifical vanilla flavor thou.

  • Kenji, I have to go to bed, so I'll resume the Thanking game in the morning, or maybe I'll hit the button a few more times with the handheld before I fall asleep ok? I'll look for the A51 tomorrow too. buona notte!

    I thought that was an error! Ugh.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    Just to test to see what happens.

    Notice if the majority are positive it is green and if the majority are negative it switches to red. In a tie perhaps it is neither.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    Well the post is still here. Right now it's +4 and -6.
    I think if a reply to an original post and there's enough "no thanks" it gets turned off. Here's what it would look like:

    This comment has been hidden because it received a lot of "No thanks." Reveal it.

    I made a reply to a rabbit thread in Albany Park, and my post got turned off. Take a peek. I made the first post right after the original post:

    http://chicago.everyblock.com/announcements/may04-bunny-rabbits-eating-my-plants-4948104/

    Lets try another test. I'll make another reply right after this one. Everyone "no thanks" it and let's see how many "no thanks" it takes to make the reply disappear.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    Make this reply disappear.

    PRESTO-CHANGE-O!

  • Inactive user

    Maybe comments take less than postings because I have seen at least one removed.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    Was it "removed" by staff or automagically by the new software feature. Anyway to tell?

  • Inactive user

    Not clear. This is what is says re your bunny comment (I don't know how bad what you said was):

    This comment has been hidden because it received a lot of "No thanks.".

  • Inactive user

    What is not "neighborly" about the last two posts lol?

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    In the bunny thread I posted this:

    eat
    more
    rabbit

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    for the make this reply disappear post above, it now has 2 "no thanks" and is still showing up.

    Give it more "no thanks".

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    It's got -4 now. Still there.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    YEAH! it disappeared! Not sure how many "no thanks" it took to make it hidden.

    here's the email I just got that it went hidden:

    http://i.imgur.com/tOHgp.jpg

  • Dirk Portage Park

    No love for the no thanks button. EB, if you want to add this feature allow those who click no thanks to be seen publicly as you do the thanks button. Only then do you stand a chance of getting people to think before they no thank. That's what I've thunk.

    @Kenji. You are on a PowerMac G4? That's worse than our home computers. Time to upgrade!

  • @kenji, it looks like it is 5 net no thanks (after thanks) to disappear.

  • not sure if you can be thanked out of a disappeared state thou

  • i see how the no thanks can bring down the comment, but am wondering if a different amount of no thanks can bring down the post, or is the post immune to being no thanked out. it would appear that the post cannot be no thanked off.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    the post is now +4 and -8

  • i am pretty sure the post is immune to being thanked off

  • i just no thanked it, now it is at +4 and -10 = -6

  • TLo

    Can we remove our "no thanks" and make the post reappear?

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    Go back to the post, click "reveal" and either take back the no thanks or add more thanks. See what happens.

  • i just thanked your PRESTO-CHANGE-O! bringing it to -5 + 5 and it is not back

  • Joan M. Back in Lincoln Square and liking it.

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

    I like the Thanks/No Thanks option. Rather than typing a followup comment you can one-click agree or disagree.

    I don't think the comments should be eliminated after too many No Thanks, however. You can see how many people disagree, versus the Thanks which only suggests agreement.

    It's no different than the Thumbs Up/Down feature on a lot of newspapers.

  • there was nothing wrong with it before, you were either thanked or not (no thanked). the only difference is that you know how many people are not open minded enough to discuss the why they do not appreciate your comment or to contribute their point of view to a healthy discussion. instead they would just hit the no thank button and no one will know including the poster will know why their comment was not appreciated. there are several people including myself that learn from other points of view and it is not a right or wrong thing, it is being open minded enough to read the other posters comments in an attempt to understand the other point of view , and sometimes with enough intelligent conversation and discussion actually change it.

  • Inactive user

    Yes, I have already seen some unobjectionable posts "no thanked," which suggests that it is someone who doesn't like that participant and is targeting anything they post.

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

    Just not being Thanked is not the same thing as being Not Thanked. Lots of people are just neutral.

    If you don't think No Thanks is important just ignore it.

  • @ bob, thank you for sharing your point of view and not just no thanking me, i appreciate and respect that.

  • This whole thing is ridiculous and childish. Disagreeing with someon's opinion does not fit into the "unneighborly" category. Show "agree" and "disagree." Makes more sense, but when did sense become a criterion?

  • @kenji, did you receive a message when your post disappeared? you know i just realized that when i get thanked i am emailed that someone has thanked me, but i am not emailed when i am "no thanked", how will i know that my post is getting "no thanked"?

  • @dennis, just because someone does not agree with you does not mean that your opinion is not valuable, it may even stimulate discussion and the 5 no thanks or no agrees should not censor an opinion no matter how opposed. it should be left open for debate. everyone is entitled to their own opinion and should be able to post it for all to see. that is why we call this place we live america.

  • well, i am looking forward to the blog post about the introduction of "no thanks" today.
    i wish they would just have us all vote if we want it or not. that way at least you have your freedom of choice as well and win or lose at least you know your opinion was heard.

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

    You already have a freedom of choice - if you don't like it don't look at it and don't use it.

    Why deny the rest of us the option?

  • This comment has been removed by EveryBlock staff.

    @Faa-Q, in defense of Becca, she's an employee of EB/MSNBC, she has duties for her job. This place is a website that will at some point make a profit for a corporation which in turn is beholden to stockholders. We're essentially creating content for this corporation. The corporation has rules. We all agreed to their rules when we signed up. Becca is there to enforce the rules.

    My point is I don't think how she "feels" about a specific EB member comes into play.

  • This comment has been removed by EveryBlock staff.

    Hey folks, we just published our our blog post explaining "no thanks." Here it is: http://blog.everyblock.com/2012/may/07/nothanks/

  • Andrea D ...in the middle of Albany Park

    I find the red for "no thanks" distracting. I also don't like having to reveal unpopular comments - I'm a big girl, I don't feel like I need the group to determine what I may or may not find offensive. It seems like right now, its just being used to disagree with people rather than to report genuinely douchey behavior. So maybe this post is unneighborly. I'm sure Kenji will no thank the hell out of it. :)

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

    I disagree with Andrea D.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    My opinion right now is for anyone interested in their opinion being heard by EB management to go to the link above that Becca posted two posts up, and read the blog post. There's a field there to leave comments on the blog. Reason being, you'd be posting to a place where folks all over the country who use EB can see your concerns and they'll also see theirs. Essentially a better place to communicate about the topic of "thanks" an "no thanks".

  • EveryBlock Becca Director of Community Management

    Hi Andrea, we were actually discussing the same thing regarding the red "no thanks." It has now been changed to grey.

  • Andrea D ...in the middle of Albany Park

    That is so much better, seriously.. I think that was at least half my issue with it. LOL!

  • Andrea D ...in the middle of Albany Park

    Bob, you are always the contrarian! :-P~

  • Inactive user

    Yes, the grey looks better. Maybe a mint green for the thanks now lol.

  • Bill the Engineer NW Side Born & Raised

    Interesting change, but I'll reserve judgement after seeing if it works as intended.

    I will though respond (without giving "thanks" OR " "no thanks") to this comment above.... "becca the overseer will just delete your comments and your account if she doesn't like you or your posts"

    As an active participant here for some time, I have only known Becca & the rest of this staff to be fair and even handed.

  • Josh. .

    IMO, Everyblock is using the wrong terminology to track consensus.

    Why is EB beholding to the word “thanks” in the first place? I don’t see any need to reinvent the wheel here. You can eliminate much of the ambiguity of a member’s response to a comment by simply sticking to the traditional & universal definition of the words, “agree” or “disagree.

    PS. I also find EBBecca and the EB staff to be fair and tolerant.

  • EveryBlock Becca Director of Community Management

    Hi Josh, just to clarify, the goal of no thanks isn't to track consensus or disagreement. We want to give you guys a way to voice your concerns about posts that are rude, mean-spirited or nonconstructive.

    Adrian does a good job explaining this in the new blog post: http://blog.everyblock.com/2012/may/07/nothanks/

    With that said, you'll see in the blog comments that we are open to suggestions for a new name, so please feel free to chime in and share your suggestions. We're listening.

    And thank you for your comments (and Bill's) above. The community management does our best to be fair when determining what should or shouldn't be removed from the site based on the community guidelines.

  • Joan M. Back in Lincoln Square and liking it.

    Speaking of neighborliness (and we are, aren't we?) -

    What is with having a user name like PHA QUE?

    Talk about giving a giant middle finger to everyone with every post.

  • @becca, but what if they are not rude, mean-spirited or non-constructive. and "not thanked" and hidden anyway? is there anything to protect a proper post? can the commenter appeal to reveal? what if the no thanker is the un-neighborly one "no thanking" everyone? will they receive an email for excessive "no thanks" or excessive "no thanks" targeted toward one individual (considering the individuals post are within community guidelines)?

  • My suggestion would be to make things real simple and most people happy.

    You have the Thanks button

    You have the Report button... 5 reports get you to be hidden

    After 5-10 reports on a comment (up to Every Block Administrator) put it up for an Every Block Administrator review.

    Every Block would then check the post in its hidden state to see if it is deemed for complete removal.

  • @becca, look at victors comment it is not not rude, mean-spirited or non-constructive and it already has one "no thank".
    i think his idea is a pretty good one actually, he is right in the fact that most people know what "report" means and it is simple.

  • Joan M. Back in Lincoln Square and liking it.

    If the "Report" button had been available last night, don't you think an EB staffer might have taken a look at the multitude of abusive, racist, profanity-filled troll garbage on the "Leashless" thread sooner rather than later?

    I may be wrong, but I thought it remained up so long because EB folks didn't take a look, assuming, hey, it was just people making use of that new "No Thanks" button. I don't think that kind of stuff should have to wait to get a ton of "No Thanks" before it's scrubbed.

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

    On the discussion about "Leashless" - how come you can reveal the comments that got too many "No Thanks" but you can't reveal the comments that were deemed to "Violate the policy" of EB?

  • Josh. .

    @Becca,
    With ALL DUE respect, if EB tracks the number of “thanks’ to achieve a higher status within Every Blocks honor system, then indeed you are tracking consensus from a comment or contribution by that member. Also, how does the new “no thanks” feature affect someone from becoming a “neighborhood hero”, the highest EB level? I should be a hero any moment now, LOL/JK.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    When you guys are referring to other threads, you need to post a URL/Link so others can follow along. Other EB members have no clue what you are talking about.

    "Leashless", that Kastigar mentioned two posts above is a prime example. What is that and where is that, and what does it mean?

  • Joan M. Back in Lincoln Square and liking it.

    Normally, I'm all for linkage. But in this case, we "guys" don't really "need" to post links, because this is more a case of, "nothing to see here folks, more along." All the bad behavior was finally flushed by EB. Same old same old as it is with every post(s) judged to be violating the TOS.

  • Joan M. Back in Lincoln Square and liking it.

    I should add that Bob seems to be asking, in effect, to have access to all the posts that EB removes for violation of their TOS. Well, that ain't gonna happen - not here, not on Yahoo, not on darn near any site I can think of.

  • Inactive user

    There are some people who frequent posts made to certain areas and continuously post comments that racially motivated versus an actual comment with content, concern or suggestion. In those instances, we shoud have the right to mute or report an individual on the basis of disrespect, hatred, harassment or other.

    Just because a person can say something doesn't mean it should be said. Muting a person doesnt stop them from commenting but did give a person the courtesy of not having to read that posters venom and hate. No thanks simply allows one to disagree openly but does not give a user the option to report a vulgar posting or to mute it.

    I like the no thanks feature but the other features need to be returned for the safety and respect of users.

  • pha que this will appear next to all of your posts

    i am of the type that i will use the 'no thanks' button on the most neighborly comments, just for the fun of it. i can't imagine i will be alone with this move. i am like the little alien that is always trying to throw a wrench in the works, what was the alien from bugs bunny again? he was awesome, i am thinking of the episode where they are at the army base and loading up the planes with bombs, and the little alien is trying his hardest to set one off with a hammer twice his size? ps. pha que, I could really care less about anyone no thanking me because you have a right to your opinion. However, comments that are deragotory in nature, I will not accept because if I am not disrespectful to someone then they should not be disrespectful to me in any way...race, sexual preference, gender, or missing front teeth.

    Individuals who use any feature of this social media in a way just to be funny has no point in being on EB which is supposed to be a platform to share and discuss community concerns, events, etc. I for one use this platform to share my thoughts with others who have concerns hoping to achieve a positive result in our community or at least form an alliance with other community residents.

    You can "No Thank" this to high heaven. By the way, I hope all will remember the purpose of this platform and the guidelines that comes with it. Oh and I NT you too because I felt the post was irrelevant.

    @DMC, there's a goof-ball element up here on the NW side for EB. Goofy yes, but I've yet to read anyone being blatantly racist or misogynist.

    But, the majority of the goofiness can be peppered with interesting tidbits too, sometimes.

    Call it signal-to-noise ratio. Sometimes up here there's lots of noise.

    DMC, saying sexual preference is disrespectful. The modern term -- reflecting that it's not a choice -- is sexual orientation.

  • Inactive user

    @kenji, understood. You know our issues on my side of the planet so for me, fun and games have no room; we're just all about reform and concern.

    I'll be mindful of that when I'm visiting your world and I'll try smiling a bit. ;-)

    Have a great day everyone.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    Since when is saying "sexual preference" disrespectful?

    Give me a cite on that, wouldja?

    Is it like the descriptor "Oriental"?

  • Inactive user
  • Inactive user

    Seeing how I was referencing myself...I use preference.

    I prefer, I do not orient. I CHOOSE.

    What someone else does, why and how is their business. I would never even speak of it or respond to the it because its not my business. So again as long as no one disrespects me for my race, gender, sexual preference or missing front teeth....financial status, level of education or whatever; we're good.

    Why someone would feel disrepected by that, I don't even understand but to each their own.

  • Inactive user

    Correction...this post should read

    I would never even speak of it or respond to it because its not my business.

    The inclusion of the word "the" in the previous post was strictly in error and should not to be considered slander or have any negative connotation.

    This is truly moronic and lazy what EB is trying to do. First they want us to monitor the site because they cannot read all the threads (too much money apparently), and now they want us to decide what stays up and what gets hidden. Based on what? The whims of anyone/all of us. You could have a 100 Thank Yous (never actually seen that) but if you get 5 No Thank Yous then you get hidden. Is this anyway to run a railroad? And it really does not matter how many are required; on a monitored site it is the moderator who decides what stays up and what goes down. If EB is unwilling to hire the manpower needed to review "report" requests then No Thanks are basically just lipstick on the pig.

    I'm scratching my head trying to figure out what a Thanks or No Thanks choice would mean in response to that post.

    Would Thanks mean: "right on fu, power to the people, eb is so lame, they just don't understand u, u speshul snowflake. lol, k? tks"

    Or would Thanks mean: "Sweet Jesus! I wondered when that child was going to get the 411. Keep up the good work, EB!"

    I'm so confused.

    The original concept of Every Block has been slightly polluted by the idle chat and irrelevant input by some. I for one am grateful to EB for making such a handy tool available in keeping neighbors informed and alerted of things important to each community. Since there is “no fee” to use Every Block .com, I feel I have no right to complain or fault any of the staff as they iron out this new system which I’m confident will continue to benefit each of us.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    Not to mention if I insert a non-sequitor here, I'm doing it in the THREAD THAT I STARTED.

    Without those of us who inject noise every now and then into the signal, here in the 45th and 38th wards, this place would have no soul.

  • Josh. .

    Your doing what? Idle chat & irrelevent input?

    Natural reflex response there “Kenji” assuming my comment about idle chat & irrelevant input referred to you. Who was it that said “muting is for wausies”? Well, I feel the same about “no thanks” now.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    @josh, you are funny bird.

    If you are familiar with Usenet, muting was like plonking, using a killfile, on Usenet, and yes I thought it was for wussies there too.

    Speaking of Usenet, where's Tracy at with her opinions? Anyone seen her around? She's EB MIA.

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

    kenji: if you want to inject noise every now and then, why don't you start a separate thread for that? Why clutter up a discussion, stuff the email, with your own sense of humor and discouraging the rest of us from participating?

    Just because you started the discussion doesn't give you dominance.

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

    "Mute User" is the same as a killfile was in the old days on usenet.

    Today, usenet has marginal status simply because of the spammers and users who didn't really contribute much to the meaningful and useful discussions.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    @Monsieur Kastigar, if I start new thread in Kenji- Town, for just idle chit-chat would you participate and stick around even after you've been mauled a few times in it's discussions?

    You were on Usenet? chi.general? What was your handle?

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    @uncle bob, Usenet is yooge. OK it doesn't have the same flavor for text only groups it did back in the day, but for binaries it takes up huge bandwith.

    Usenet:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet

    FWIW, some of us here on EB have a long history being participants of Usenet.

    Hey everyone, thanks for your continued feedback on "no thanks." Adrian just updated our blog with some additional information about the steps we're taking and how you can help us. Please take a look: http://blog.everyblock.com/2012/may/21/nothanks2/

  • TLo

    I "No Thanksed" Becca. Just kidding, Becca!

  • Bike Jedi Bike Jedi . I live to bike . Born in the Square.

    TLo ..thats a hoot ...We should all do it just to screw with her ....Im not into the negativity of No thanks so I wont use it

  • Josh. .

    Becca, thanks for the update & the new final warning promt before giving someone a "no thanks".

    Also, I still have not heard back from Adrian regarding if all the Erroneous “no thanks” received from other members either confused or simply abused the new feature will eventually be deleted from a member’s profile.

  • Inactive user

    I think if the no thanks do not collapse the comment and if you do not list the number of no thanks received (or mutes for that matter) on the member's profile, it removes a lot of incentive for the petty to click it. People can judge on individual posts whether the no thanks are unfair, but not on a profile where they have no idea whether they were warranted. I don't believe that people have been confused when they click it, it is because they are seeking to collapse the post or run up the member's total no-thanks. Without that petty reward they may be discouraged.

  • Bike Jedi Bike Jedi . I live to bike . Born in the Square.

    It's clear the No thanks can be used as a Censorship tool and to make others look bad in the eyes of other posters ...I find nothing productive in that ...If you don't like what someone posts why dont you just say I dont like that idea ...I think X might be a better solution ...then you have discourse instead of people with an agenda getting your stuff axed ...

  • Josh. .

    Believe it or not there are some people who do not consider the rewards earned on EveryBlock as being “petty”. People work hard in establishing reputations by offering useful contributions while remaining helpful and friendly at all times. Perhaps the thumbs up or thumbs down given in some chat rooms or rant & rave forums can be considered “petty” but not here where the entire concept is based on being neighborly.

  • Inactive user

    I was referring to the people who no thank being petty. With your concern I would hope that you have never inappropriately no thanked someone.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

  • The moderation on this site is terrible too. I don't need eb to censor minor things for being off topic, I can skip or mute users if I want to. I wish there was a competitor that wasn't so sanitized.

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

    There is http://www.patch.com/ as an alternative, but it doesn't have Chicago - just a few adjacent suburbs.

    I don't see that Thanks/No-Thanks hassle, which I too think was a poorly conceived idea.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    @jm540. There's a popular place for chicago based talk that isn't sanitized. It's reddit.com. There's chicago based subreddits you might enjoy. r/chicago is the main chicago subreddit:

  • @kenji,
    Thanks! I'm an active redditor (I have my 4th cakeday coming up next month). I love r/chicago. I like EB for the extreme locality of it. I can read stuff from my block, I just wish it wasn't so heavily moderated.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    @jm540. Actually I don't think our posts here get looked at by EB employees unless another EB member sends a message to feedback or the no-thanks button gets clicked a ton.

    Imagine if it was like 4chan!

    Oh yeah, there's also Usenet too. Do you now about it?

  • Usenet's dead.

  • kenji Find us here --> http://reddit.com/r/greatNWside

    Thank you, Shawn Michael Ritchie.

  • OK, let me put it another way. "You know Usenet's dead when Kenji stops posting there, and posts almost exclusively on EB instead."

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

    Usenet isn't dead, it just is cluttered with a bunch of spam and other posts.

    You can figure out how to filter this out.

    And you don't need 5 "No Thanks" to get rid of the comments.

    Personally, I like usenet a lot better - it's completely free speech with no restrictions - unless you're subscribed to a moderated group.

  • Josh. .

    If EB plans to keep the NO THANKS feature in place as is, might I suggest also displaying the number of times each member NO THANKED another member just like the “THANKS” feature in thier profile. This way the habitual “NO THANKER” can still remain anonymous and also identify their excessive abuse/misuse.

  • Bike Jedi Bike Jedi . I live to bike . Born in the Square.

    Josh ... great idea .. I still think there should get rid of it ...Hell if you dont like what someone wrote why cant you just tell them and have discourse ?
