Hey Everyone,

My mom is moving out to the area this June, but they are driving her stuff out here in a large Uhaul or Penske type truck. Does anyone know of any hotels out by O'hare/Rosemont that has a parking lot or garage that can accommodate a truck of that size for one night? I know there are lots downtown that can, but I wouldn't be comfortable having all of her stuff in a lot downtown overnight. I'm open to downtown hotel recommendations as well, if they have a private parking structure that would work.

I've tried to work it out with my HOA but they will not allow us to park the moving truck in the building's lot overnight, so I'm trying to come up with a contingency plan. We'd prefer not to have to unpack 60 boxes and several heavy loads of furniture immediately after making a cross-country trip.

Any thoughts or ideas appreciated. Thanks!

  • It's not that close, but the new Holiday Inn in Niles might work. It's al the corner of Milwaukee and Waukegan Road.

Most if not all of the hotels by the Cumberland stop on the blue line have outdoor parking, so I am sure they could fit your truck (no overhead to worry about). Perhaps if you explain your needs they can accommodate you. If so I would expect them to designate exactly where you can put it.

  • I'm assuming your mom is not staying at the hotel, you just want to use their lot, right?
How about a bank? How about a self storage place? How about a grocery store?

I would guess the problem they'd have with saying yes is liability if the truck is broken into or stolen.

I would suggest you drive around the area and when you see a likely place, go in and ask. Make sure to talk to the manager or owner.

I've seen campers parking overrnight in the Walmart lot in Niles.

  • There will be two people staying at the hotel. Two people will be driving in the Uhaul and my mom and I will be following behind in her car. The truck would not just be unattended in the hotel’s lot.

    Thanks everyone for the leads.

Have a solution, depending on the comfort level of the drivers. My cousin was an over the road driver. Elk Grove Village was preferred by the guys with the big rigs.

There is a Motel 6 in Elk Grove Village that allows trucks to park overnight. It's located at 1601 Oakton in Elk Grove Village. The number listed is (847) 981-9766. This is located right off of Route 72 (Higgin's Ave.) It's just about 10 minutes further out than the more $$$ hotels by O'Hare.

I doubt that you'd have much luck in Rosemont that caters more to a business clientele.

  • If they will be hotel guests, I would recommend the Candlewood Suites which a subsidiary of Holiday Inn. The location near O'Hare is 4021 North Mannheim Road Schiller Park and rates start around $100 per night. It's kind of an extended stay hotel with free washers and dryers and stuff like that.

I second the Holiday Inn in Niles. Plenty of room in the back parking lot, police station across the street and it's a newer hotel. That is exactly where I would go. And I have done my share of what you will be doing in June. And no matter where you park, have a good padlock for the cargo door of the truck.

  • Many good choices mentioned above.
Keep in mind that hotel occupancy rates vary widely, and area special events (concerts, shows, expositions, etc) will directly impact the available space in hotel parking lots.
Select a few that look appealing and contact the property directly, ask to speak with a supervisor/manager for assurance that they can accommodate the truck/trailer and have a large lot with plenty of space for the date/s needed.

How about a moving company that specializes in moves out of state. Did you get prices.

  • Crowne Plaza O’Hare has a parking lot that can accommodate trucks. It’s easy to get in and out as well.

  • @Paul, we did and we’re not interested in that option because of timing issues. Most of those cross country movers move multiple people’s stuff at a time. The trucks only leave when full. We don’t want an extended time frame of possible delivery and quite frankly have heard many horror stories from people who have used movers for cross country moves. YMMV.

  • Nikki my son had to do something thing stayed at the motel 6 which is location at Riverroad and Lawrence have a parking lot that you could park your trucks and have cameras all around so it will be safe
