I heard them as well. I'm south of Division. I saw in the FB neighborhood watch groups that a caps officer said offduty cops said it was fireworks. But it sounded more like gun fire to me. It was 2 booms and then a 3rd shortly after.

My out of town friends and family that have come here this summer have all commented on just how bad the roads are. City officials are going to see how their budget priorities for protected bike lanes vs safe roads for all will affect tourist revenue as they continue to let the roads erode. As I drive around the city I'm reminded of the classic computer game Sim City......

"You have no right to label people" yet you labeled someone for looking at you plus all the people who have posted on this thread and disagreed with your hyperactive extreme position on the topic. Maybe the leerer is mentally ill himself and needs treatment but doesn't have access to it b/c most mental health hospitals and centers have been close by our wonderful politicians. I might suggest buying a collection of Mu-Mus or long sleeved bulky sweatshirts etc so that you don't feel so visually violated in the future as no one will be able to see anything of you and your children but your face peering out from your clothing and you won't feel violated b/c people looked at you.

Jaki you can get the names/numbers of the various construction crews from the permit for construction found on the city website. Also calling 911 is not extreme as you have to get a record of your complaint and a squad car must be sent to address the issue. I read on another post that city projects are exempt from the Noise Ordinance. Not sure if this is legally correct. If this is a residential or private construction project then there is an extensive noise ordinance that they must follow or be fined if you can get the cops to show up. I tried calling 311 for a violation and asked who I could submit a complaint to and was sent immediately to 911.

I'm torn on the public shaming aspect but I do think that we need to remind Pet Owners that their is a time and a place for their animal to be in public places. I highly doubt this is the first request you've received. This discussion happens every year around festival season as people wonder how they are run and financed. Why don't you get ahead of the problem and post this information publicly?

5:44 p.m.

Guinose I find it hard to believe that 5 neighborhood groups find it necessary to coordinate their efforts to obtain this information if they never requested it. I agree with them that this information should be publicly available and easily found by residents of the city. That said, has anyone tried a FOIA?

Why are these events not more transparent ? Why are they not willing to share this information regardless of the laws they fall under or not?

3:24 p.m.

I love that people are willing to help a family out with funeral expenses, however this doesn't provide much information about the family or her. There's no back story to who they are what her life was like. Do we know for sure this money is going to the family and not some con artist?

Permit Parking can turn into an extra expense with little benefit unless you can get the parking enforced. Our block is only enforced on random days and never in the evenings when we need it to be. Please go visit the school during the pickup/drop off times and witness the traffic congestion on Honore St. The school will not be able to continue the system it uses now on Honore St if TJ's entrance is also there. I'm not sure what the school is able to do to change their current system, hopefully they can come up with a viable and safe alternative.

A partial two way on Honore (from Division to Thomas) will be a safety hazard for residents. Drivers will prefer a direct route to a major street and continue down Honore the wrong way all the way to Augusta. Drivers will not choose the maze of one way side streets to get to a major street. Drivers will take the direct route and not the multiple turn route, unless a cop sits and tickets people at Thomas and Honore. This WILL happen - I have seen it occur during street festivals when road closures divert traffic to the side streets.

If they choose (and this is NOT their current proposal) to make Honore a 2 way street all the way from Division to Augusta then I believe the residents of Honore should be allowed a major vote for or against that traffic change as they will be most affected by such a change. We also then need to be concerned about the extra traffic on Augusta which backs up badly in both directions during rush hour.

Most burglaries happen during the day when most people are not home. So don't be shocked by "broad daylight" thefts.

11:03 a.m.

I live in the neighborhood and I do NOT support them coming as their plan stands now. 1. The school pickup/drop off combined with the parking entrance to Trader Joe's will not be safe. 2. The intersection at Honore/Division/Marion Ct needs to be addressed. 3. They want to make Honore street a partial 2 way street which is not safe for the residents. etc. Those are just the safety issues off the top of my head. If they cooperate with the neighborhood and residents and can come up with some creative solutions to these issues then I would love to have TJ's in this spot otherwise I hope they can find a better location in our neighborhood that does not have as many challenges.

The traffic management at this point is particularly bad and adding a large grocery store which would have constant in and out traffic could be a safety hazard. There is a school directly across the street - you don't want to be near it during unloading/loading times. The stop sign has misaligned streets at Division/Honore/Marion Ct and cars on Division don't readily notice its actually a 4 way stop sign. You then have a stoplight at wood just a block away from the stop sign. This spot unusually tight with traffic, pedestrians, and bicycles. Any proposal from Trader Joe's to occupy this location is going to have to address these high traffic issues.

Apollo I don't know why you are taking such issues with my comment. I think we need to do something to make it safer for pedestrians to cross the street, I just think these signs are not working. I think we can brainstorm as citizens, community leaders, politicians etc (a community) and come up with a better plan. In the interim these signs are a good start but I don't think they are solving the problem. They confuse drivers. We need to re-educate drivers on the law many don't know what the law is in Chicago if there is a pedestrian in the street. Which is why drivers do not stop for them when they are trying to cross the street.

And I also love your assumption that pedestrians are always just pedestrians, or bikers always bikers, that you can't be a person who uses all 3 forms of transportation and thus understands the perspective of all 3 and the need for all of them to share the streets and sidewalks safely together.

— On the neighbor message Pedestrian sign needs replacement
9:04 p.m.

Drivers need to be reeducated on this law, but I do not believe the pedestrian signs were effective at this. It gave some pedestrians an ill advised confidence to cross the street when cars may or may not interpret the sign and then might NOT stop for them. Many drivers were confused by the signs. The signs are easily beat up and probably fairly costly to replace. They are a good start at addressing the problem but I think as a community we can do better.

Just to throw another gym referral out there besides WPF - I've heard good things about XSport Fitness near Fullerton if you can compromise convenience for facility that offers more.

— On the neighbor message Gym for the non-athlete
2:59 p.m.

I think a math model might help -

30 Days: 3.75*30 + 19 = 112.50 + 19 = 131.50 => 49
15 Days 3.75*15 + 19 = 56.25 +19 = 75.25 => 49
10 Days 3.75*10 + 19 = 37.5 +19 = 56.5 => 49
5 Days 3.75*5 + 19 = 18.75 +19 = 37.5

So basically if you use the gym for between 5 to 10 days of the month you will not pay the max fee. If you plan on going more than that you can expect a monthly billl of $49. Doesn't sound like that great of a deal when you do the math.

They informed me that they should be wearing badges and have a badge number. Since they had refused to give me any information about themselves I called 911. I was informed by the 911 operator that others had already called 911. Two SUV Cop Cars came by and talked to them and drove off. I do believe they had badges on but they were still misleading and pushy. I do not want door-to-door salesmen misleading my neighbors or if they were not legit casing our homes for future burglaries.

I only opened my door b/c I thought it was the meter reader for ComED.

@Jimsey that comment is only stating to others on this thread that you do not own a car and have never driven around for an hour looking for parking. If you can't put your car in a parking space when you are not driving it then the driver cannot sleep. There is a bird shop on Western that might know what to do. The owner posts quite frequently in facebook neighborhood watch groups.

10:31 a.m.

The plan that Theodora posted overlooks the necessary requirement that streets with residential zone permit parking require enforcement. I live within blocks of there and I can tell you that the only time I see DOR ticketers on my block is a random Tuesday at noon when half the street is empty. The residents on Marshfield have a very real reason to be concerned that the residents of this building will park their cars on that street and may do it illegally and risk the occasional ticket.

I am not saying I am not glad that this lot is being developed. But after years of waiting for it has been planned out poorly.

— On the neighbor message New construction @Division and Ashland?
6:39 p.m.

The assumption that the proximity of the building to public transit will only attract residents without cars is flawed. Any large residential building needs to accommodate a parking for residents and cannot assume that those residents will not use cars. I work downtown and use public transit to commute, but also own a car for other needs I have to visit family.

— On the neighbor message New construction @Division and Ashland?
2:32 p.m.

I hardly think that people who want to include parking for the new residents of a large building are selfish or snobby or oppose development of the lot. They want to make sure the development has properly planned out the effect of an increase of residents in the area. Parking would be one of those concerns.

"NIMBY, and NIMBYISM, is 'not in my back yard'. This negative expression describes the attitudes of people who vehemently oppose proposed zoning or proposed building development for reasons that are purely selfish or snobby. Nimbies often know that the proposal has benefits to the greater public, but are unwilling to open up their neighborhood to be part of the proposal. "

The tribune contracts companies to sell subscriptions. These companies then hire students to go door to door to sell subscriptions. They claim the money goes to a college fund when in reality it is really wages/commission money for selling subscriptions. There is no guarantee the money will go to the students college funds or what not. I do not mind these kids having a job and earning money, what I do mind is that they are lying. If you want to buy a subscription to the Tribune then go ahead and buy one from them, but that only encourages more door to door sales and with that more scams and people coming around casing houses. If you want to help send kids to college then donate to a real program that does that and is transparent. If you support Chick-Fil-A or anyone else being kicked out of their place of business in a foul way then it won't be too far away that someone can come along and kick you out of your home in a foul way. Your attitude is just as bigoted as those you disagree with.

I did not say that "government and non-profit entities have no risk of management abuses." Thank you for twisting my words. I stated that the dynamics of unions in the two sectors are completely different due to the funding source. You cannot talk about the private sector unions as a defense for how public sector unions should be run.

One page of the entire 104 page document is devoted to the numbers. (except for a couple other pages that discuss 2 outside contractors that were hired for a total of $80,000, not sure where that $80K falls into the below categories).

Summary of Services
Total Budget for 2012 is $551,439
Advertising & Promotions $45,000
Public Way Maintenance $150,000
Public Way Aesthetics $59,000
Facade Improvements $30,000
Parking/Transit/Accessibility $10,000
District Planning $110,000
Personnel $91, 930
Admin Non-Personnel $26,300
Loss Collection $20,000

Just so its known it took me less than 5 minutes to relay this summary of basic budget information. It would be easy for someone who works for the SSA to put together a document/spreadsheet to display this information to the public to provide information for why extending the SSA would be a good thing for those tenants and owners.

The new website offers a more description about the services provided than the previous one. (http://westtownssa.org/home/#what) However, the budget is still not available on it. I believe in an earlier post they stated the new website would allow for this?

I requested the budget and finally had a chance to look it over. I am a public policy student, a public finance & budgeting course is required for my program in which we analyze a budget and give it a grade based on many factors from the GFOA (Government Finance Organization Association), based on the budgets ability to communicate, relate policy, financial goals, and operations. I would have given this an F. The services the SSA provides are summed up in 6 services with none of the categories defined, ie I still have no further idea of where the money was spent, except I now know the proportion and amounts. The budget is full of legal language that governs the organization. The legal by-laws and the budget should be separate documents that complement each other. I would not expect an SSA to live up to every criteria of the GFOA but this doesn't even follow the practical use of having a budget.

I chose Boost over Virgin due to phone choice. The service is not as great as Sprint or U.S. Cellular but it gets the job done. You get what you pay for.

I have to be in certain spots in my apartment to get a signal which is annoying but I think typical. There seems to be a bad spot within 2 blocks of my apartment too. When I get in the car and try to map anything out I have to wait until I get nearer to Ashland before signal really starts working.

It seems to me the SSA's should be like a TIF. When the area is revitalized and developed if can then be removed from the SSA. The SSA can then expand into other areas which need development. The way it is now the SSA is just going to keep expanding and becoming a large bureaucracy and taxpayers will not feel like their increased taxes actually go to help their needs. I'm still researching though, this is just my gun feeling on the matter.

This is the most ridiculous, unrealistic, irrational, implausible statement - " Were we to meet in person, I would hope that we could have a conversation based on its own merits, and not your perception of me based on my race, my gender, my ethnicity, my religion, or anything else."

God gave humans the ability to talk to one other, to communicate, we can give something a name and another person understands that name or word and has the same meaning. We "label" everything around us so we can communicate. Thus we can build a society to live in with others. If I can't determine your gender, background, or "anything else" about you we cannot function in society together.

On a less philosophical note, if I can't determine "anything else" about you I wouldn't feel safe conversing with you. Nor would I have any reason to want to converse with you, nothing to persuade me that you had anything interesting to talk about.

EveryBlock User the type of youth mob attacks that this thread discusses have been well-documented throughout the posts by links to news stories from multiple occurrences, dates, and locations in Chicago. These reports all state that the mobs were a majority composition of African-American teens. These are facts and not racist statements. If you had read thru the posts most of these comments have already been made. But then someone, such as yourself, who hasn't read them through them all comes along and makes a post based on an incomplete reading of this very long thread and reignites the discussion.

It is always in response to something.
it always has your best interest at heart”

This article explains some of the politics behind street fests.

12:57 p.m.

I read an article recently about the "state of street fairs" in chicago and can't remember where. There are a lot of underlying issues to street fests that most people are not aware of between the alderman, companies that run them, and the neighborhood orgs. I will look for it and post.

12:07 p.m.

Annoy your landlord politely with requests about every detail of your apartment maintenance. They will want you out after that. Remember to stay polite at all times. I did this before with a "slumlord" of course my maintenance issues were very legitimate and she didn't want to deal with anything. Electricity wiring failed, heater was shut down b/c it was extremely dirty, plumbing went. She yelled meanly at me every time I called b/c the place was falling apart and she didn't want to invest anything into it. I eventually decided to get outta there.

11:28 a.m.

An issue not yet brought up is that there are professional firms that the neighborhood organizations hire to run them. Most of the donation money goes to these firms and not the neighborhood organization. Also, most tips at the beer tents do not go to the bartenders but the donation bin. Every street fest is organized/structured a bit differently so its hard to know when you're there where your money is going to. I don't consider anyone a cheapskate for wanting to know who is getting their money and how it is used. Also, I went to Do Division Fest b/c I was craving a good burger at my fav restaurant and the bouncers were harassing people for donation, I was quite annoyed by their behavior and strong arming technique. I don't mind being asked for a donation but they were demanding it.

I am glad I read this because the meaning of "No Thanks" to me is "Dislike" not "Report Abuse of EB Policies". I kinda like the like/dislike feature on some sites, but a Thanks / Abuse button is a bit bazaar. I think many people probably didn't realize what the No Thanks button meant. I would move out/break the lease. This place is never going to feel like home to you. Make sure to do it legally. Trisha's advice may make you liable for the rest of the lease if you do not follow protocols that have been described above. He may just be happy that you move out and can get a less "picky" tenant. (I do not mean to say you are picky this place sounds awful and uninhabitable but he probably thinks you are complaining about "nothing.") I'm sure the police are smart enough to rush to the scene of a more pressing matter Michael. Also, it can't hurt to have a patrol car pass thru the block at night. You have to call 911 for many matters that are not emergencies to get patrol cars to come out. They set the system up that way don't yell at us for using the system, fix the system if you find it so abhorrent that people are concerned for their safety at night when they can't park on their own block!

I agree if they want the money and you can tell by the city budget and cook county budget they are trying to find any sort of free or tax to increase , just enforce residential parking permit, i think 90% of the city would agree to it as parking is at such a premium (except for all the people who hate people with cars) . Sometimes I think the businesses have "worked something out" with the police so their customers can park. Or maybe its the businesses valet drivers?

The point is if its not enforced having zones is useless.

It is an emergency when I cannot park on my own street that I pay extra to park on and must walk several blocks at night alone in an area that is currently experience a spike in armed muggings.

To get the cops to enforce the parking rule you have to get them to ticket it which will hopefully make people think twice before parking on the street again illegally To get a squad car to come out you have to call 911. Calling 311 does nothing, you can't leave any complaints or suggestions with them either.

Carla Thanks for sharing your comparisons of Landlords in the city. I have only lived in Milwaukee and Chicago and Chicago seems just awful with landlords not taking care of buildings/apartments and renting out places that need some rehab. Landlords seem to forget that the place is being used and therefore getting wear and tear while tenants live in it. They never put more than a day between tenants moving in and out so how can they go in there and check for maintenance issues, clean, and repaint? Ha! It doesn't happen in Chicago.

I agree with @Beach and Homan this way the landlord will learn with financial hurt that the dog pissing issue is not acceptable and hopefully be scared to try it with the next tenant. I broke two leases without a lawyer and with getting my security deposit back. My tactic sweet and polite annoyance of complaining about every little thing wrong in the apartment. (I was in two really bad situations where I had to do this, since then I found a wonderful apartment that I have been in for 5+years)

I doubt people are avoiding the extra $25 it costs for residential zoned parking. The extra cars must be from somewhere else. I have and they won't do anything. If you don't have anything productive to say then keep it to yourself. Your posts are unproductive and insulting to concerns of safety for everyone in the neighborhood and attending the fest. When people realize they are driving the wrong way down a road apparently they tend to speed causing the unexpected traffic to be even more of a safety concern. You should not judge something to be a silly uptight concern if you have not witnessed it.

Asking someone to use something for the purpose it is intended for is not inconveniencing them. Nor is asking them to quit inconveniencing me by taking up parking that is in short supply when you could easily just use your garage.

6:47 p.m.

Perhaps Damen is a hoarder and the idea of giving up stuff that fills a garage to the point where a car does not fit into it with everything else that is stored there is too emotional for hoarders.

6:07 p.m.

I did not post this comment to be attacked for owning a car. Cars are a part of modern life, get used to it. They are not going anywhere. We need to find a way to make parking easier, stop ticketing cars for revenue reasons instead of real violations that endanger people's safety or property rights.

1:54 p.m.

I have a car for many reasons and I believe that others do as well. I often use public transportation and my bike too. Having a car is as American as Apple Pie. This city needs to stop making car owners considered evil.

1:38 p.m.

I only have problems in the evenings usually from Thursday to Sunday. Which means I have to park about 2 blocks from my apartment. Although lately there seems to be an increase in cars in the area. I think its the easiest area to park in. As long as you are not trying to park near busy streets to go to stores/restaurants you should be able to park easily. However, my car is taking a beating in the winter due to the weather.

I went into the post office after not getting mail for 2 weeks having put the name on the mail box and said I must be missing mail where did it go? This was in December so I figured I had at least a few Christmas Cards and bills missing. Ground Hog Day (more than 2 months later) I got a huge pile of mail including several Christmas Cards. 1) I was correcting Alonso's phrasing to be more honest in his marketing of the event. As phrased the fact that this was for those with more progressive leanings was hidden. 2) Alonso pretty much agreed with this. 3) We then went on to talk about how getting more people on the ballot makes the electoral process more democratic, but is hard to do b/c of the political parties power. 4) If you don't like politics and public policy then don't comment on the string. Nothing in the everyblock policy states you can not have a political discussion here. 5) When someone asks a question answer it and be helpful as the everyblock policy states. 6) Attacking someone on the basis of their political opinion is discriminatory.

10:38 p.m.

I'm still confused as to what typing muted thread does....Avondale Res your comment is hilariously ignorant as when you deal with neighbor issues that involve contacting government organizations you can't avoid the politics. If you are on this site you would have to be interested in community involvement and changing/improving your surroundings which would eventually run into politics as well. Sorry but politics and public policy touch our lives every day whether you are aware of it or not.

7:02 p.m.

what does "muted thread" mean?

6:10 p.m.

Agreed. Now you see how I feel as a conservative in this city every time I go to vote. Both parties can be very mean to the candidates that they do not support trying to get on the ballot. Its very anti-democratic!

6:06 p.m.

not arguing about republicans being progressives or (RINOs) lol and vice versa, political opinions come in all sizes and shades of the rainbow

5:52 p.m.

A more honest statement would be Anyone wishing to support progressive candidates is invited regardless of political party or belief.

You write in double-speak - supporting progressive candidates does not include all political beliefs. At least be honest about your event.

5:32 p.m.

some people don't want to live that far north in the city so that's why they choose the list of neighborhoods to the west and some people don't want to be west of the city or south of the city. Your comment is comparing apples to oranges.

I took another look at the Reference Guide and it references 1 study in Miami for Education's effectiveness on behavior so I am not convinced that hiring full time staff to go to the schools to educate just on this topic is worth the expense. @Jason just b/c it is coalition of government agencies does not mean its not taxpayer dollars, so I'm not sure what your point there was. You need to get real yourself and realize that we need cuts BIG effin' golden cuts and this is one program that I think can go b/c there are other cheaper ways to educate children on road safety.

Do you think that the bankrupt City of Chicago should just keep funding everything? Programs have to be cut, like it or not. The government is too big in this city and your line of thinking that everything is essential shows your dependency on thinking without the government people will run into the streets and be killed in the dozens is ridiculous. Charity and giving is the heart of this nation and we need to do more of it, need to protect and provide for our families, friends, and neighbors.
