I saw in last Wednesday's Tribune "Voice of the people" column, Cook County Clerk David Orr posted "End Red light program" and stands with most of us in ending the Red light program or scaling it back and makes mention of the parking meter scam being another bad deal for Chicago. Very nice to see, kudos to David Orr.

A&K, "Now I want to know where are the stop sign cameras". Really... ?

— On the neighbor message End or Scale Back red-light camera program
2:20 p.m.

The Red Light cameras were never really about saving lives, but rather to make money on you. Your infractions like entering the intersections on red, right on reds, not stopping before making your right etc.. As for the speed cams around "for the safety of the children" really, if you hit a child going 20 mph, guess what... yes, it's all about the money and nothing else. Look up the facts through out the country and be amazed and embarrassed that we voted these people behind these scams into office to protect us and our civic interest.

Cathy, hahaha, yes, you are correct, but I feel we need to keep positive and keep registering our complaints.
I am afraid to say what we have here is akin to the famous 'boiling frog syndrome', in our case all the neighbors are being civil, and just complaining to each other, as the noise keeps increasing they just go inside, instead of taking a more proactive stance.
I've started going around to neighbors in the area that I know, and don't know, with a copy of the petition to make sure they are aware of the websites and other places to post complaints. About 98% are unaware...
Most encounters have been positive... I think out of about 30 homes only three didn't care, don't understand or were just rude, so I that's pretty good.

Andy, I am wondering if there is a door-to-door petition that could taken around through the neighborhood for signatures and to let our neighbors know of these outlets to place complaints ?
I was just looking over the CDA Noise Complaint report, and am not surprised to see such low numbers reported because no one has been made aware of this site to make a complaint.

7:29 p.m.

Andy, thank you, I was afraid that was the case of why we haven't heard of the plan in the papers or news... Politics.

1:33 p.m.

Karianne, I'm with you, I also have called up neighbors and no one is aware of these proposed changes, but they all expressed their surprise on the ever increasing air traffic in these recent years, but they thought it was to be temporary..
Regarding going to Nadig I would first like to ask Andy, since he is the representative for the O'Hare Noise Compatibility Commission. Andy would be the best person to talk to Nadig as he has all of the information and statistics.
So, Andy... what do you think ?

11:05 p.m.

Karianne, Yes, you are correct it will affect Edgebrook and Forest Glenn and Wildwood.
I have lived in this area going on 20 years, and the air traffic has only gotten bad in last three years or so, but like you said anymore would awful.

I just read a story in the Trib., about a McCook cop who in a drunken stupor drove into a train yard in Bed Ford Park, and of course the Police called his pals to pick him up... the investigation found no evidence of wrong doing on his part except that he got lost... even though he admitted that he only had about 5 drinks... just 5 drinks or so...

Sunny, Well said, but about the cameras you say "it needs to be understood that they are on a public through fare the word is "public" that means there is no privacy."

Then why is it that you are not allowed to film the Police while in public ?

"As for the signs, it is each driver or any one using the road, their responsibility to know the speed limits posted or otherwise."

You do realize that you must find a sign first to know the posted speed limit, or do you just assume... ?
Do you claim to know all the speed limits of all of the roads you are using prior to turning on to that road ?
Should you drive at 30 mph, only to find this street is posted 25 or 35 mph. Now you breaking the law for speeding or holding up traffic, creating a danger to others due to backing up traffic and having drivers drive around you, like when Bob is taking up a whole car lane for his bicycle.
Sometimes the speed limit may be different from one side of the street to the other within the same block(s).

"The police use excessive force when they feel a threatening person, no matter how the age or situation they can use the force they need."

No, excessive force is "excessive" yes, the Police are allowed to use force but not excessive force. Police are supposed to serve and protect, if they feel so threatened they can call for back up, they also carry batons, and they have guns if needed if their life is being threatened

Right now, on many streets you can drive for many blocks and not see a speed lmt sign posted... is this where the new speed traps will be ?

Well, the way it has turned out is that the RLC's are nothing more than a bait and switch scam... Yes, LOOK over here, Not over there !

Safety, saving lives from cars barreling thru the intersections, when in actual they are quietly pinning tickets on drivers for "Right on Red" infractions.
We haven't heard too much about all of these tickets, have we... Yes, LOOK over here, Not over there !

Again this just proves that these Saving Lives RLC's are nothing more than a money grabbing sham against the motoring citizens !

— On the neighbor message Speed Limit Cameras on Foster
1:39 a.m.

OK, so back to these RLC's, and saving lives.. ?
The other day I was thinking, I have only seen someone enter and go through a Red light blatantly maybe a few times, mostly I have seen cars that are already partly in the intersection complete their turn on the tail end of the Amber / start of Red light.

So, this led me to think how are they making their money.
Then came the answer.. I saw a car with the right turn signal on waiting to turn... the road was clear.. why doesn't he turn ?
The car behind him honked and he still wouldn't turn... ? Why ?
RLC Fright !
I believe this in part has caused much of the traffic congestion that I see all around.

I decided to check on the Right on Red / RLC connection and found this interesting article.

http://articles.latimes.com/2008/may/19/local/me-redlight19

In the article "The city of Los Angeles issued more than 30,000 photo tickets last year at 32 camera-equipped intersections. About eight in 10 involved right turns"... eight out ten, yes, umm saving lives !

Much like the 'Parking Boxes' people who are complaining that they are not making enough money off of us, that they just keep raising their rates. The same thing will happen here with the 'Speed & Red Light Cameras' not making enough to fill their pockets as fast as they expect, well, they will just increase the fines, tweak the cameras, and or adjust the laws to fit their needs.

Sorry to break the news, but Child Safety begins at Home where most of the their accidents happen.
Parents hold on to your children's hands when crossing the street, or in the parking lot at the Jewel etc. remember 'Teach your Children Well'.

And as to Adult carnage in the streets... umm, where is it ?
Well, by now you should be old enough to know better and you should have learned to look both ways to cross the streets !

If anything the campaign should be Education, teach people to wake up and pay attention to traffic, No cell phone and No Texting while driving or walking in the street.

When crossing the streets, pay attention to traffic and not your... iphones, headphones, etch-a-sketches, or whatever. And you could be a bit more attentive to your own safety by not dressing completely in black at night and not paying attention.
"Don't saunter across the street, oblivious to the world around you". When the road is clear or the light is green, quickly move along and pay attention all the way thru.

You don't need to spank and hit to 'Teach your Children Well'... educate !

Jake, Look at the taxes on Gasoline which are increased again and again to balance the budget. People are addicted to their vehicles, the convenience and privacy they offer. So, is it really fair to take advantage of these poor souls ?

Maybe if the fines would have at least started out lower then raise them accordingly after proof of driver abuse, they might have been able to fool the public into believing that it's about safety and not the cash !

If we don't speed what will the city do then... lower the limits, shorten the yellow lights... oh sorry they have already been caught doing that...
Well, whats next... raise the price of water... sell our street parking ...
Amazingly most malls and stores don't seem to have video in their parking lots, so many thieves and hit and run accidents get away and remain unsolved. maybe that is where the City / Police should be putting these cameras

If these Speed Cams and RLC's weren't 'Revenue Driven Legislation', why are these fines so high ?

If it's all about safety and teaching people to slow down why not fine you ... lets say a dollar for every mile over the limit ?
I believe that would be a fair way to get the point across, without the public feeling assaulted by the city !

Regarding the RLC's, all of the scientific information and studies that I have read, and all the videos that I have watched, I have yet to see the RLC's save any lives.

Realistically, the 'Red Light Runners' in 99.9 % or more seemed to have been going thru due to distractions ... and did not appear to be running the 'Red' on purpose !

I believe these speed cameras will create a whole new problem and add to an old one ... road congestion will increase needless to say.

Imagine just what the roads will be like during rush hour traffic... yes, that 10-20 minute trip time will increase drastically.

So, what will people do ? If you haven't figured it out, many will turn to the side streets, speed bumps or no speed bumps... safety huh !
