On one of the threads about the new Gateway Jewel, someone noted that the Starbucks in the store has chocolate croissants, which she had trouble finding elsewhere. For her and other chocolate croissant lovers, I noticed Sunday that Cafe Sol on Howard also had them, but the lure of a Glazed & Infused doughnut was too much for me.

    Those doughnuts are magical!

The one I had Sunday was luscious. On my way out, I bought another for a friend. He called today gushing over it.

  • Please tell me where you find glazed & infused donuts in RP! :)

Sol Cafe has them on weekends ... on weekdays I'm partial to the cheese Danish. And they have the best chai, too. Made in house, which these days puts them in the minority.

I guess my original post wasn't clear on that, Bobbi. Cafe Sol has them but just on Saturdays and Sundays.

That was me who mentioned the chocolate croissants. What is a glazed and infused donut? Please remind me where Cafe de Sol is.

Robin filled in the address while I was looking it up. That's the east end of the Howard Theater Building. Name is just Sol Café.

There are many kinds of Glazed & Infused doughnuts. That's the name of a doughnut chain with several outlets in Chicago, but they deliver them to Sol for weekend sales.

You should be able to get chocolate croissants at any good bakery, and the Bennison's stand at the Sunday Farmer's Market has them too.

All "regular" Starbucks have chocolate croissants nowadays, ever since they rolled out their new pastries. I have yet to try one, though, so I can't speak to quality or flavor.

My point was, there's no place close that had them. I know I could get them *someplace*...but it involved a trip. The Dom's had them sometimes, but I couldn't buy them individually. When they had them, they were in large quantity, in a big container. I could freeze them and just take out one and heat it in the oven when I wanted one, but it loses flavor after a while. The Starbucks in the Dom's didn't have them regularly. The Common Cup has them sometimes, but they go fast when they do have them. So I was pleasantly surprised to find the Starbucks at the new Jewel offered them. That's all I was saying.

FebGirl - Trader Joes has surprisingly good frozen ones; just thaw and bake fresh (and you can't beat the smell!)

So true! While heating in the oven, they produce the most heavenly aroma....

For chocolate lovers in the 'hood, another delectable chocolate indulgence is something call "Texas sheet cake" at the Rub Smokehouse on Western just south of Lunt. It's chocolate cake baked in a frying pan. I don't know how they do it but it's so good it's sinful!

I didn't know it was chocolate! Gonna have to check it out.

It's funny...their menu doesn't describe it at all, so you'd never know if you don't ask. But I did once and when I was told it's chocolate, I had to try it. I am a big fan of chocolate, if you had not guessed already, LOL. Anyway, it's really great. P^=

This afternoon I tried a chocolate croissant at a Starbucks downtown on my way to Millennium Park. It was quite good. Do have them heat it up. That didn't compare, though, with tonight's dessert: chocolate truffle cake, an individual warm chocolate cake with an indentation holding Valrhona chocolate sauce with pomegranate puree. Heavenly!

It sounds it! Pray tell, where did you have this little piece of heaven, Helen?

If you are looking for chocolate croissants and other decedent chocolate bakery items (chocolate cake donuts, chocolate chocolate chip coffee cakes or chocolate cakes) you have to check out Schlegel's Bakery at 3915 W Touhy in Lincolnwood. Can't.be any fresher as we bake them fresh everyday right on site. You have a choice of chocolate almond or plain almond croissants. They are our special on Thursday for $1.50 each and cake donuts are .75 cents every Saturday all day. Buy one huy a dozen. You can't possibly compare frozen to freshly baked bakery goods. There's no comparison for me. Let's keep our neighborhood bakeries in our neighborhoods but frequenting them more often than the big chain stores or franchise coffee shops or we could lose something very valuable to our communities. Of course while you are at Schlegel's there's no reason not to check out all of our fabulous pastries and cookies as well. More than worth a quick trip to chevk us out. You won't be disappointed.

  • Medici in Hyde Park has amazing chocolate croissants.

Sam and Oliver, both of these places are a long way to go for a chocolate croissant, but I'll keep Schlegel's in mind for something special. Meanwhile, a neighbor invited me down this evening for chocolate ganache cake she got somewhere out west. I think I've gained 10 pounds this week.
