"On the site of the Diversey River Bowl is the Showboat Dixiana, which was finally allowed to open here in 1934 after a two-year dispute with city officials about a downtown location. It presented melodramas (with rooftop dancing afterwards). After being dark for two years, the boat moved to Michigan City in 1937 to present “Tobacco Road,” banned in Chicago by Mayor Kelly. She half-sank upon arrival, and two months later the cast gave up when she was rammed by a Naval Reserve boat.”

Bart, thanks for sharing such an interesting story. You prompted me to read a bit more about the history of the Showboat Dixiana and the "Tobacco Road" ban enforced by Mayor Kelly ... a fascinating peek back. Much appreciated...

  • Looks like Diversey and Logan had fewer potholes 80 years ago...

  • Michael Ramstedt Managing Broker, Krain Real Estate

Everywhere had fewer potholes everytime ago, lol

  • One of these showboats survives, rotting but mostly intact, moored for the past ten years on the Illinois River in Calhoun County (just north of St. Louis). I found it by accident while driving the road along the river about two years ago - after mile after mile of essentially the same scenery, I stumbled on something that looks like a set from Sc**by-Doo.

It's endangered and will likely be scrapped soon unless supporters raise $30,000 or so to pay the long-overdue dock fees.

(If you've wondered why I've asterisked the name of a certain cartoon dog - it triggers Everyblock's forbidden words filter, for some bizarre reason... and to make it worse the useless error message they give doesn't tell you which word it was that needs censoring!)

If you like old pictures, go to this site: http://themanonfive.com/ (It is done by a young guy who also works at the Chicago Architecture Foundation.)

You can see more pictures of the showboat under his tagged year, 1936: http://themanonfive.com/tagged/1936

@Bart, Thanks for posting these wonderful pictures. Back in the day, I used to bowl at Diversey River Bowl. Great pics.

  • This was before the Julia Lathrop Housing Project was built!?
