Yet another package stolen

Hi all,

Just wanted to give a heads up, had a package stolen from my porch on the 3200 block of W. McLean Ave. FedEx tracking number states "left on porch" at 11:26 am. I got the mail at noon, nothing there.

We generally request packages to have signature on delivery, however this was a gift sent from my in-laws (actually the last package they shipped went missing as well). I work from home, doorbell never rang.

I filed a police report, had FedEx run a "trace", etc.

If you happen to see this fancy ottoman hanging out in a nearby alley give me a shout I guess!

http://www.hayneedle.com/product/garrettdoublestorageottomanwithtraysideottomans.cfm

Thanks!

  • I guess if you didn't know the package was coming, and the FedEx guy didn't ring the bell, well, my idea won't work. But when I know a package is coming, and I am home, I leave a LARGE PAPER note on the door saying something like, "FedEx: WE ARE HOME. PLEASE KNOCK HARD. THANK YOU. :-)" along with the date.

    It has worked for us.

  • After reading a bunch of these stories of stolen shipments, I decided to have my holiday purchases shipped to my husband's workplace. Which was promptly broken into and my packages opened and rifled through. What are the chances???

Rain Barrel Setup

Hi Neighbors,

Does anyone have a rain barrel? If so, I would love to see your setup or just ask some questions. Please post here or PM me.

Thanks!

  • I have two 55 gallon barrels that are adequate most of the time. They sit on two rows of cinder blocks so my watering cans can easily fit under the 'faucets'. Due to the massive weight I also have a rigid Styrofoam board under the cinder blocks. I also placed some large patio blocks around the setup so my feet don't get muddy when there's been an overflow event.
PS I would pm you, but I don't know how!!!

  • I wish I could remember the specific volume of water mentioned, but the point that stuck with me from a speaker a few years ago was that the amount of water captured from a typical Chicago Bungalow roof in an average rain already exceeded the capacity of a single rain...

I wish I could remember the specific volume of water mentioned, but the point that stuck with me from a speaker a few years ago was that the amount of water captured from a typical Chicago Bungalow roof in an average rain already exceeded the capacity of a single rain barrel. I think the rest of the discussion was about rain gardens, use of multiple cascaded barrels, and placement of rain barrels so that run-off didn't damage foundations or cover public walks.

Not explicitly answering your question, but here are some photos of a project that won this year's Green Award from the Chicago Historic Bungalow Association for handling runoff and flooding. It looks like two barrels are cascaded, and another one definitely makes use of a diverter that redirects runoff back into the sewer.

If you're on Facebook, you can ask the homeowner questions about his setup:

Milwaukee av has long been a desolate stretch of urban landscape and improvement is welcome, although the density may be a bit higher than desirable. And 25 affordable units gain is more than what is there now, but will it offset rent increases nearby?

Funny, but when I could not recognize the street corner in the photo I looked closer, and the phone number on the tackle shop tracks to the town of Kirckaldy, Fife, in the UK! Can't WBEZ get a picture of a similarly rundown looking street corner in Logan Square? Well, maybe not any more. Everything is getting rehabbed. so we import our pre-gentrification pictures from England! Cheers, old chap.

Carter, I think that you are correct in theory in regards to zoning. In practice, however, the areas that are affected by density bonuses in general and TOD projects specifically is an extremely small part of the City. A TOD site, for example, has to be 600 feet - and in some cases 1,200 feet - from a transit station. That's a one or two block radius, most of which is commercial corridors. Any redevelopment that would occur in the residential core of Logan Square's neighborhood streets would be as-right development and extremely unlikely to secure density bonuses.

As for encouraging the removal of existing residents? I'd say that's erroneous in an environment that allows development to occur as the zoning currently allows, since it would encourage an increase to the supply of housing in a high-demand market. If development is limited to one or two sites high-density because of neighborhood attitudes towards construction, then, yeah, prices will continue to rise...because the supply of housing has been artificially lowered.

Bring the Chicago Foodseum to Logan Square

Hi friends - I wanted to share an exciting potential opportunity for the Logan Square neighborhood - to be the home of the "Foodseum" - Chicago's first Food Museum!

I learned about this project in the works a couple of weeks ago through an article on Eater.com http://www.eater.com/2014/11/24/7276629/chicagos-first-food-museum-foodseum-campaign Their website has more details: http://www.foodseum.org/#home

They are in the middle of a Kickstarter campaign to open their first interactive exhibit as early as Spring 2015: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/foodseum/chicagos-food-museum

The location has not been decided, but I immediately thought Logan Square would be the perfect location, with all the new restaurant activity, fantastic farmer's market, and plans for a future rare-fruit orchard.

After pledging my support, I emailed my thoughts to their executive director, Kyle Joseph, who personally wrote me back to thank me. He said that they are "big fans" of LS and they have been keeping an eye out there, and agreed that LS would be a great fit. He encouraged me to pass along the word in the neighborhood and said he would be happy to speak to fellow residents and supporters.

If you like this idea, please pass it along, donate to the campaign, and email the museum founders and organizers that you would love for Foodseum to come to Logan Square!

  • LD

Agreed, I have nothing against the idea of the museum (I'd def visit out of curiosity), I just wouldn't invest in it as I am doubtful of its sustenance. Ditto for the juice bar (if the profit margins actually float the juice bar for a while, it will close as soon as the craze dies down, vitamixes get cheaper, or another, less expensive juice bar opens), although I think there's a big difference b/t restaurant/retail and hospitality/entertainment and not sure the 2 are comparable.

  • Carter O'Brien lager beer rioter

There's of course nothing wrong with people having opinions. There is however a special place in hell for those who comment negatively on web stories/projects, etc they didn't even bother to visit before forming said opinions.

Let's Get our Video Cameras Connected to CPD District/Cental Command

Being the IT Dept and administrator to the cameras that protect our Condo association since 2009, I have seen firsthand the power this tool has to solve crime. We've been subpoenaed twice and have produced useful video evidence for another dozen or so incidents over the last 5 years that all have helped make this community stronger. High ranking CPD Chief McNaughton has already successfully launched a pilot program in his previous position in Lawndale and we're very close to the reality where hiding from the law is no longer an option.

  • yourhandsmyface Palmer square. Drummer.

  • Smart Bike. I agree 1000 percent. On a side note I have been researching a ton on home security companies as well as ways to outfit our condo association with cameras. Can you recommend a good company that installs outside systems as well as maybe some DIY solutions. I know places like costco sell security systems as well as comcast/adt for home and you get what you pay for. Considering a man who stopped a tagger was shot at I want video around my home sooner than later.

  • Smart Bike Parts Local Bike Shop

Greetings Strike 3 - Back in 2009 we hired ADT to install 8 cameras around our property. Bike shop payed half and condo assoc payed half. Total cost of installation and equipment (cameras + DVR + Closed Circuit TV) was around $2K. Then we subscribed to 2DVR.com for $10/month and all residents have access to all the cameras 24/7 via their phones or computers.

acupuncture and chiropractor?

Is there a Logan square facility that offers both services at the same location that anyone would recommend.? I have both arthritic and alignment issues going on but limited time (and $) to deal with both.

  • Sage Community Health Collective is an amazing place. They do fantastic acupuncture and they also have massage and other things, though I am not sure about chiro. Anyway, they have a wonderful mission that these services should be available to everyone, so they work on a sliding scale. If you do community acupuncture (which is a quiet room with several people getting it at once - it's not as weird as it sounds at ALL) - it's even less. I went there for several months and loved it. http://sagecommunityhealth.org/

This week-end there was a huge hawk 'posing' on the ground while someone not quite close took phone pictures. It appeared to be @ 2' tall and eventually flew up in a near by tree and posed some more. (I haven't seen any pigeons in that area lately either.)

As 'The Miss' and I went on our walk, we saw two pretty ladies walking arm-in-arm. I think they are sisters. One has a smile that could melt the snow; the other is a special needs adult who I do not believe can speak. I always say 'Hello' and the special needs lady released her companion's hand to give me a hug...a nice big hug.

Then she started to cry. Large tears. I said "Please don't be sad" and her companion said "Oh, she cries when she is happy." I said 'Well, then just keep hugging and I'm glad you are happy'.

If you see them in the park, please do say 'Hello' (Hugs are optional...)

  • I bet you saw a Coopers Hawk. One flew into our backyard a few years back so I did a little research to identify the species. It might have been 2 ft. but in a little Chicago backyard, it looked like a giant Condor.

  • I saw a hawk that fits the description in my yard a few days ago.

  • i have seen that hawk a few times… it really looks like massive compared to the other birds around there...and I am pretty sure I have seen what is left of the rabbits/pigeons it destroys… looks like a small explosion of feathers & fur in the middle of the field, with nothing else around…

the hawk i saw had quite a bit of white on it, so the coopers hawk looks to be it

Coming soon to Diversey and Richmond

This new bar and restaurant maybe a great addition to Logan Square. I have heard several different explanations as to just what it might be, stay tuned.

  • "A large ham selection will hang from behind the bar, and every guest, whether ordering a glass of wine at the bar or sitting down for a meal, will get a complimentary wooden board with a handful of fresh slices of meat like prosciutto or Spanish-style jamon with some pickles."
    How cool...

I went to the business meeting about the Mega Mall redevelopment, and nothing is written in stone, but the proposal was for: a 40,000 sq ft supermarket at the Sacramento end of Milwaukee with two stories of parking above and a two store gym over that. The rest of the block with be residential (approx 200 rental units) with retail on the first floor. It will appear to be 5-6 separate building from the outside with some set backs. There will be a new traffic light in the middle of the block for cars to turn into the parking lot. Truck traffic in the back. 20 ft sidewalks in front. 10% affordable housing and they said no TIF funds would be use (I would love to see that). The buildings will vary for approx. 7 to 9 stories. Those were the features I found most interesting but there was more.
That was the proposal. Call Alderman Waguespack or wait for the public meetings that are coming.

  • That public meeting should be interesting! Logan Square seems set on no buildings over 4 or 5 stories....with 6 really pushing it.

They had to wait for Animal Care and Control to get there and by then, it was too late. About us:

Chicago Food Coop is a food buying club made up of individuals who collectively purchase groceries directly from distributors. We have an advantage over the individual consumer because we can purchase goods at wholesale (discounted) prices and pass the savings on to our members. We strive to bring our members variety and value. Our grocery suppliers are selected to provide the items that members want and as a buying club the price we pay for grocery items is often even lower than listed.

Logan Square gang territories question

My wife and I are thinking about moving from the Kedzie/Fullerton part of Logan to N. St. Louis just south of Cortland. We found a house we really like, but after doing some research, it seems that whole area is smack in the middle of 'Imperial Gangsters' gang territory. How concerned should we be about this? Despite being marked as gang territory, it felt like a pretty chill family area, so pretty torn. We don't really know that area, so would really appreciate any thoughts/advice from those that do. Thanks.

And, borderlines between gang areas are always dangerous. I heard that the displacement of Spanish Cobras by gentrification in Humboldt Park had caused some of the bloodshed in SW Logan Square, as the pushed into OA territory.

Attempted Car Theft

My car window was broken out on the 2400 north block of Lawndale yesterday. The police assumed it stolen and towed it. I spent $170 to get my car back and spent 5 hours at the pound. This is the second time in the last 2 months my car has been tampered with in the neighborhood. Keep an eye out!

While it is very true that the club may not be a choice deterrent, it is one more thing that might make a thief go to the next car, as that extra time could mean being caught.

A better deterrent is something like OnStar or LoJack. I think there is an aftermarket product that can be installed in your car if it's compatible.

Cost to dig out basement?

Has anyone had this done? There's a lot of material on the internet about this but not a whole lot of specific pricing examples, at least not for the Chicago area.. I'm aware of all of the permitting requirements, etc., I just need a ballpark cost to demo the current partially finished basement, break up the slab, dig down about 1-foot (and do whatever may be necessary there -- pouring additional foundation, sure-up existing pillars, etc.), pour a new slab, rough-in wall studs (I can do the final finishes), and relocate the mechanicals to a consolidated area (they're currently spread all over the place). The basement also currently has a full bathroom which I would like to re-install after the dig-out.. Little help? Thanks :) !!

  • Hey everyone,

Thought I would share some info. Reasonable cost to lower the basement floor for a typical Chicago home or building is usually about $20,000 to $25,000.

    This would include the following:

    1. Drawings
    2. Tear out and haul away existing floor
    3. Dig basement 1 foot

    Hey everyone,

Thought I would share some info. Reasonable cost to lower the basement floor for a typical Chicago home or building is usually about $20,000 to $25,000.

    This would include the following:

    1. Drawings
    2. Tear out and haul away existing floor
    3. Dig basement 1 foot
    4. Install bench footings if going below existing footings
    5. Drain tile and pit
    6. New insulated floor
    7. Change wood posts and beams to steel with new column pads

Of course there will be people who charge triple this amount. So costs can vary. One thing I would recommend if going below footings is not underpinning but using bench footings. It's far easier and far more economical.

You may not even need to do all the things above depending on your situation.

  • Grumpy - do you mind sharing the contact info for the GC who would charge that? Thanks!

Logan Square Basement Digout

My wife and I just bought a grey stone in Logan. We're doing the planning work for a total renovation that includes lowering the basement floor. I got into and under the floor (with a sledge and shovel) and discovered the footings are only 10"" below existing concrete slab. That means we'll have to do something more than a simple dig out. My question is has anyone done this and do you have any advice? We have an architect and have spoken with contractors, just looking for some other homeowner experience. Thanks!

  • Steven Vance Urban planner

@Martina: You can see what companies are building or renovating basements in Logan Square on this website:
    http://www.chicagocityscape.com/places.php?place=communityarea-logan-square

Type in "basement" in the search bar above the list of building permits. In small text you'll see the names of the companies and architects doing the work.

  • @Martina if your looking to go a foot or two it's not very difficult. But if you have a crawlspace I would not recommend it.

For anyone looking to do basement dig outs I highly recommend bench footings far more economical than underpinning.

Missing Pomeranian Mix

I found this senior Pomeranian Mix on the corner of Shakespeare and Central Park. A bit timid and shy, but eventually warmed up. Is anyone missing him? He's over 10 years old and unneutered. If you are missing this little guy or know who is, please message me on EB. I believe you can do that through the little envelope on the posting. Thanks!

  • I checked...they found their pup. Thanks for the lead, though!

  • Michelle, is that a different dog than the one you posted that was found?

Transit Oriented Development, Milwaukee/California Community Feedback

There was another thread that I started that got a little long. Thought I'd start a fresh one to house thoughts on the idea of TOD near the California El station, as the developer goes back to the drawing board to work on a revised, scaled-back plan. Here's some recent feedback from the group "Save Our Boulevards" and a link to follow offering a different view.
