Construction at the Corner of Talman & Medill?

Anyone know what's happening here? It's been vacant so long, I'm surprised to see it all torn up now. A contractor once told me that the soil was contaminated from the factory on the same block and that's why it wasn't developed. For reference, this is across the street from Goethe School. My curiosity is piqued... Thanks in advance for any info!

  • Wow! Beginning at upper $700s, too?! This is pretty intense...

  • One more question! I know it's been discussed elsewhere on EB, so I'm sorry to ask again, but what time is construction allowed to start in the morning? It can't be 6:30am... This is a 311 situation, right?

Direct Energy?

This evening a man came to my door asking me to switch to Direct Energy as my electricity provider...I think...

I asked to photocopy some of his company's information, so I could look at it more carefully. He said it was the private property of his company, and wouldn't allow me to copy any of it. I asked if he had any material to give me that I could look over, and he said he did not.

A few years ago I was slammed by someone coming to my door about energy companies, etc. As a result, I am leery, so I told this man that I would contact Citizens' Utility Board first, and then look into his company based on their opinion.

I emailed CUB about Direct Energy, and am awaiting a response. I will post the answer from CUB as soon as I hear what they have to say.

Thanks.

  • Place a "No Solicitation" sign on your door. It has worked wonders for me,

  • I've done that. It's reduced the traffic @ 50%. For some reason, campaign workers don't feel they're "soliciting"...

It's good that you are thinking about this now, before you have pre-existing conditions. I find most people don't consider it until it's too late. I personally believe the monthly payment for the insurance is worth the financial peace of mind in the case of an emergency.

Found dog (Craigslist)

I just saw this post on Craigslist for a found German shepherd:
http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/laf/4691098252.html

It seems that rather than hold onto the dog for a bit, someone contacted animal control, and the person who posted this claims the dog will be euthanized within a week. Not sure if that's true, but I certainly hope it isn't.

In any case, I hope this gets more exposure here.

Everyblock vs Nextdoor in Logan Square

I have my favorite but would like to hear what peeps in Logan Square think.

If you could only use one, which would you choose? ...and why? Which do you find to be more informative, to have better features, community outreach, support etc? ...or is there another social neighborhood network you prefer to use? ie Facebook, Yahoo Groups, Foursquare

To help compare, i put together a chart:

Entrepreneur on Milwaukee

Just saw a hooker pick up a john on Milwaukee, right across from the Logan Blue line station. At 11 am. Didn't have my phone on me, plus I doubt the police would be interested in an isolated incident. It IS isolated, yes? Or have others seen this activity around the station?

we're going to have to agree to disagree, kate.

eons ago i was a fanatically social and fiscal liberal who truly believed the disadvantaged could be raised up with a helping hand and that crime could be eradicated if we had mercy on criminals and led them to rehabilitation. i read the works of marx and lenin ... and alinsky, looking for hope but eventually saw through their empty, manipulative, failed philosophies.

i have seen 40-50 years of the failure of the liberal approach, the failure of protocols to treat, not punish, the criminal, to give away money to those who will not work.

i quit believing in that BS a long, long time ago. i grew up.

i no longer view crime, welfare, the economy, social policy, domestic and national policy, national defense, or much of anything else through the liberal kaleidoscope.

prison IS a deterrent ... for as long as the incarceration lasts. they come out, re-crime, return to prison. more deterrence. criminals come out, re-crime, die in the attempt. oh well, more deterrence.

i am an attorney and licensed private investigator. i am certified to, and do, train people to accurately shoot a firearm until an imminent threat on their life is stopped.

i believe that Themis holds the scales of justice in her left hand and the sword in her right for a reason. what is that reason? she is right-handed.

prostitutes fund pimps who fund groups that buy and sell drugs on a scale you cannot imagine, engage in sex trafficking, kill to protect their area and sales and secrets, buy sell and use illegal weapons. the whole money chain is toxic and corrupt - from the street to the kingpin.

someone very close to me was once saved from death by a coven of hookers, taken in by them while dying. the person survived and went to prison - rightly so. i, in turn, owe my life to that person.

so i do not hate prostitutes. my position is not ad hominem. my stance is pro law, pro safety.

so yes, absolutely. ENFORCE THE LAW. ZERO TOLERANCE FOR CRIME.

  • Y'all are presuming a lot about folks you don't even know. I've known sex workers in this city, and while some of their stories were tragic and some of them were empowering, none of them were kidnapped or coerced into doing it. That's not to say that there *aren't* sex...

I've known sex workers in this city, and while some of their stories were tragic and some of them were empowering, none of them were kidnapped or coerced into doing it. That's not to say that there *aren't* sex workers out there who are in that situation; this is only to say that none of us know sh*t about their backgrounds or choices, so let's not fly off the handle talking about cutting off the drug-addled dragon's tails or whatever other sort of lame analogies for crime that we can come up with.

Gil, you haven't seen 40-50 years of a liberal failure. You've seen 40-50 years of a bipartisan failure to actually cooperate and work towards long-term and sustainable government solutions. But hey, I probably shouldn't expect too much from anyone who speaks of viewing the world merely through a "liberal" or "conservative" lens.

Gunshots Saturday morning near Cortland and Lawndale?

Did anyone else hear this? Just after 6 am. 5 shots (very loud) a car engine gunning up and then screeching tires and spinning off, then 5 (or 6?) more shots right away. I went outside to see if anyone was injured and needed help, but the street seemed to be empty.

  • I think this may have been closer to 6:30 AM---I called 911 at 6:31. I only heard 5 shots total---3/2 or 2/3 (don't remember exactly 2 days after the fact)---and didn't hear the car. I'm south of the 606 and called it in as sounding to me like Monticello @ Cortland. It's hard to pinpoint the origins of sounds.

Hello Neighbors!

I am having a get together at my house tonight and need to purchase daily permit parking stickers for my friends who drive. I recently moved to LS, but when I lived in Lakeview I was able to walk to my Alderman's office to buy a bundle of the temporary stickers.

Now I am having trouble discerning which Ward I am part of, and whether Alderman offices in LS sell the stickers.

I purchased my vehicle city sticker at a Currency Exchange on Armitage, but from what I'm reading online it looks like you cannot purchase daily stickers from such places.

So, outside of driving to one of the 3 inconveniently located City Clerk Offices in the city, is there a way to purchase the stickers to have for tonight? (Online isn't an option for today but good for future use)

Thank you very much for reading and your suggestions!

  • Thanks for your helpful comments!

  • You can order online in the future (not for same day obviously.) It usually takes about a week for them to arrive. If you are comfortable with taking the El downtown, the blue line Washington stop is very close to City Hall. It's a lot easier than trying to find parking there.

Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for an affordable wedding venue? I'd prefer it to be on the north side of town but would consider other areas. Also if anyone has any vendors catering, flowers, linens etc they recommend I'd love that too. Thanks in advance!

Gunshots fired around midnight

Anyone know anything about gunshots last night around midnight? Three shots fired and soon after police and ambulance showed up. Looked like someone was shot in the leg but police didn't seem to be searching for anyone. All if this happened near Drake and Altgeld streets.

I know this happens sometimes but we are new to Chicago and never experienced violence so close to our home before (moved from San Francisco)!

Thanks!

There were two Imperial Gangsters shot in that area this summer, one of the two was killed. I believe there is a gang house (Spanish Cobras) at the intersection of Drake and Altgeld. It's white and on the southeast corner so be careful.

Picture Window Frame Repair Recommendation

Hi Everyblock Neighbors!
I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for someone to replace our 4' x 5' window on the front of our house. The frame is rotted and probably needs carpentry work and it also has a small stained glass window above it that's part of the whole frame as well.
I called a window company and they came out and gave me a startling quote. I'm wondering if I should really be talking with a carpenter or a person that isn't trying to upsell me on buying windows for my entire house, etc. Any suggestions?

  • i wondered why dan ignored my email, yet again, at green windows. must be nice to have all the work you need!

  • Sorry to hear that! I do know that there's a limit window -- excuse the pun -- to do restoration work like windows because winter is coming and when the temps fall that limits their ability to work. I had this problem last year when I needed some deck work done.

A close reading of that inspection indicates that an awful lot of what they were failed over is things that were not physically even on the premises at the time the inspection took place. Those are pieces that had not been supplied, and could be on back order, either by the vendor who did the installation, or the company being contracted for their waste disposal. Not a big deal. Just seems a bit like a rush job, or they had locked down the date for inspection, and as things tend to happen. The job is taking longer than they originally anticipated, and planned when they broke ground.

I thought that there was a code among graffiti artists to not deface major graffiti art that goes beyond just tagging. I think that this outdoor murals could be classified as graffiti art because of the materials and style of the work crosses over into graffiti art. Even if it isn't the greatest mural that anyone has ever seen, it was done with the help of the community and children. What was done to it was so disrespectful and selfish. I have a real problem with taggers. I don't consider them artists. They are just marking territory, thinking this makes them important, but instead it just makes them idiots, not artists. They are wannabes that will never be. It takes talent to be a graffiti artist. Taggers have no talent, and think too highly of themselves. They disrespect property and real artists. They think only of themselves.

The CTA advertised a mural project and held an open call with voting for a wide list of stations in the past, but not this one. Is Logan Square not deserving of such regard from a neighborhood bursting at the seams with artists?

You're right, I am envious and I would have loved to have pitched a proposal, but I didn't know it was an option nor did I (and still don't) know how to go about it. Some research will have to be done because it seems a lot of people find the mural an eyesore. You should see the comment thread on the original article. I think its only fair to open the floodgates to proposals and collaborations for when this 2 year tenure is complete.

The blue and yellow mural was iconic - "a person or thing regarded as a representative symbol of something" - and well known. It was simplistic and stereotypical, but at least it had a history and story that involved Logan Square. Even Chicago Picasso was met with disgust and controversy, but now has become an icon of the city. It would be impossible to move to another location, as it created for that space. The same with Calder's Flamingo. But this isn't about sculptures from famous artists; this is a discussion on a wall painted for advertisement. Everyone has a right to their opinion and definition of art, and a right to voice it when forced to stare at it daily.

I agree with Keith - anyone who creates a public mural should expect graffiti. The artist and gallery took precautions and sealed the mural, thus not letting it get "destroyed" as the article suggested. That's what sparked all of this. The mural is fine.

This is why i firmly believe politics and private business needs to remain separate. I have been following this situation closely. As a longtime resident I wasn't overly thrilled a bar was replacing provenance. We need locally sourced retail in our neighborhood, as this helps grow the core of what we are all about. I have shopped and supported provenance for over 6 years and was very upset they were leaving their space. I attended a community meeting a few weeks back and was completely surprised by what I heard. Most importantly, these were 3 local residents I.e. small business owners. They planned to keep a retail component w/ their business model, adding produce also & plans to expand to a full on wine/packaged goods & retail component in the building. This wasn't just a bar as what I read on here and provenances FB page. I was very disappointed to find out though that provenance, who started this campaign to stay in the spot via reaching out to the alderman, is now playing dirty pool.

The owners of provenance have quietly spread the word they may be staying. It appears they are threatening to remain in the space unless they are compensated by the building owner in an effort to block the new owners from buying the building. Was this the advice of the alderman interactions? To play the role of poor me then threaten to squat to block a sell of the building? Did the building owner or new owner do something illegal here by giving them 60 days notice to vacate after not agreeing to extend their lease per Provenances FB page? If this is true, Shame on you Provenance for rallying support of our neighborhood, then trying to extort payment because apparently it's only your right to do business in the space.

Signed,
a very disappointed FORMER customer.

  • Lincoln Square location not closing. Really nice cheese and wine at that store and very helpful staff! Happy to have them in the area and a loss for Logan Square.

*Just went to Provenance. Their last day is this Saturday.
*Everything Like2beyourneighbor said was a total fabrication.
*Won't wait for an apology from Like2beyourneighbor b/c, well...we all know who he works for.
*An impressive record for Like2beyourneighbor in a short time. Several mutes, and multiple people who will NEVER SET FOOD IN THE NEW RESTAURANT/STORE because they were able to see right through the bs. Congrats.
*Provenance Lincoln Square still open. See you there. :)

An Orchard at the Megamall Parking Lot?

Wild: This Chicagoist article seems to indicate that the gravel parking lot by the Megamall will be turned into an orchard. I haven't seen anything else on this yet, but this is quite a development if it's true.
http://chicagoist.com/2014/09/23/logan_square_orchard_still_a_ways_o.php

  • As others have said, this project has been in the works for many years, and I keep seeing articles about it now and then. But this particular article has a headline and phrasing that makes it sound like this is a done deal and is definitely happening. Then again, it doesn't cite any sources to back that up. So does anyone know if there has been any breakthrough or recent development on this?

  • Yosef A Logan Square neighbor since 1990

While I don't know if it is really a done deal, I did notice that it is shown on both the Bicentennial Improvement Project for "The Square" and the Mega-Mall replacement Shopping Center plans.

Karen Lewis trying to run for mayor

Someone is canvassing the neighborhood collecting signatures for Karen Lewis, president of the Chicago Teacher's Union, to be added to the mayoral ballot.

Despite what another poster said, Karen Lewis has NO PhDs, let alone "several." From the bio's I've seen, she doesn't even have a masters. Not that it matters - I'm not looking for a PhD to run the city. I can't see how that would help, unless the degree were...

Despite what another poster said, Karen Lewis has NO PhDs, let alone "several." From the bio's I've seen, she doesn't even have a masters. Not that it matters - I'm not looking for a PhD to run the city. I can't see how that would help, unless the degree were in urban planning.

Back to Karen Lewis - she probably has many good qualities, but I see no evidence that a person who has run a teachers' union for a few years has the qualifications to run a city the size of Chicago with its complex problems. She seems to be a one issue candidate. And she hasn't even run the school district - budgets, staffing, crisis management, long range planning, etc. I have a difficult time seeing her as a credible candidate.

  • Karen Lewis is not giving up her Union position to be Mayor. That should tell you something right there. What she is doing is in fact is enrich herself while building a more powerful base. Any money given will going to her Campaign Fund which we all know becomes a personal piggy bank.

She know she will not win, she also knows that if she runs a semi-successful campaign that the Mayor will not be able to ignore or slight her.

This is all a power play.
