Crime in the city

Has anyone noticed whenever the media claims the rates are down, there's suddenly more shootings going on? Just wondering......

  • MrC Raised in, and serving the Englewood Community

It seems that they spoke out, but only with anonymity. They are similar to members of the community in that they also fear retribution.

  • jan in little village long time resident

MrC, you are right! People do not want to get involved, because they fear they'll be next! It's sad that this is what our society has become! But as you also stated, they can remain anonymous. But then you also have to feel comfortable with the police you're talking to, who are they protecting?

Please take 30 seconds to vote for a project RAGE is working on with Urban Prep Englewood Campus students Pride of Solidarity 2017 - Trick'd Out Open Spaces! We need your votes to make this idea a reality!

The Englewood neighborhood in Chicago needs to be beautified and Urban Prep Englewood Campus class of 2017 wants to take on that charge. The students has been working closely with RAGE and they want a communal space with shipping containers on a vacant lot by the school in Englewood.

Most vacant lots here are seen as an eyesore that is typically where garbage is dumped. There are more than 6 vacant lots next to the school and if we are able to convert one of these to be a garden and serve as safe space with the use of shipping containers this will beautify the area. We have over 2000 vacant lots that are depressing to our youth, elders and the community at large.

This youth led effort from the class of 2017 "Solidarity Pride" wants to bring something to Englewood that has never been done here before. This new & innovative design will be open to the public & serve as a safe space with activities for all ages. There are not enough activities but there is a vast majority of vacant land and we want to repurpose this to spark fun, conversation and hope. We will use the funds to clean and inspect the soil of the vacant lot and to repurpose the donated shipping containers from nearby railway companies in the area. We will need cleaning supplies and designers to help us beautify the lot and tricked out the shipping container in order for it to be a hub for the youth and adults.

Which Alderman Do I Go To?

I am looking to speak with an alderman, and have called the 12th, 15th, and 16th ward aldermans, but all seem to tell me that they don't deal with our community. Who should I be calling? Thanks.

  • Lucy Lucy, 56, longtime resident.

Call the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners at 1-312-269-7900. Give them your address and they will be able to tell you your ward and Alderman's name and number at City Hall and their ward office. The information they give you WILL BE CORRECT. When you call your alderman advise them that the Board of Elections gave you this information.

Looking to Move

Looking to move to the area. Pros? Cons? Suggestions? Helpful hints? I am a 25 year old student (white, female) and would like to live alone.

  • You can do what we did when looking for a place.

    1. Drive around the neighborhood.

    2. Drive down the alleys.

    3. What is the laundry mat status? Overpopulated with singles or families.

    4. Grocery stores accessible?

    5. What is public transportation like?

    6. Check out the Elementary School ratings. Look it up under Illinois School Report Cards.

    7. Check out the community news ... http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/back-of-yards-brighton-park?gclid=CMmv5rCNvb0CFUVgMgodug0Aqg

    Good Luck.

  • I have a one bedroom small house for rent near the orange line on 35th and archer. McKinley Park is much better than Back of the Yards.
