Found Backpack

I found a backpack somebody tossed over the front fence in my home on Ashland. Possibly belonging to someone who was robbed or someone that got on an altercation early morning on Wednesday 12/17. If you are the owner, please email me for identification otherwise I will turn it to the Police Department.

Police in Lakeview

A lot of police and parademics headed to Lakeview just now. Anyone know what's going on?

  • Aimzer North Center mama bear for 10 years and counting.

10 CPD SUVs just pulled onto my street, sirens and light flashing, knocked on a neighbor's door (no one home), went into a few backyards, mingled for a bit out front, then left. This is western/Irving park area...too far?

  • L

Where in LV? There was a protest last night around Belmont and Racine.

  • Dee, a fire was reported on Leavitt. Didn't turn into much.

Aimzer, a person with psychiatric issues called in an emergency involving a police officer in the 2200 block of Byron. It was unfounded.

Chinese Restaurant

I am looking for a good Chinese Restaurant/Take-out in the Lakeview or Roscoe Village Area. I have tried a few and nothing to make me want to go back again. Any suggestions? Thank you.

  • And I always feel bad just going for takeout, because the place is nice, they have alcohol, but no one is ever in there. One of these days.

Has anyone heard anything further about a new owner for a Chinese restaurant at Mark's old location?

Lost dog in Roscoe Village - brown cockapoo named Jack

Hi all - my neighbors' dog, Jack, ran off this morning at about 9:00 am (Sun, 12/21). He is a brown cockapoo and doesn't have any tags on. Last seen at corner of Addison and Ravenswood. Small dog, roughly 20 pounds, very nice. If you see him, can you please email me at joshgray77@gmail.com? Thank you so much.

Found white and tan cat

I found a short haired, white and tan cat matching that description yesterday on the 1300 block of Wellington. It was super friendly and followed me home. Clearly someone's pet because he is very well fed. I took him to Urban Vet immediately and there's no chip. I've posted online and put up signs. He's in our living room and sweet as can be.

A Lakeview woman was beaten in an armed robbery early Wednesday morning by a man whose jacket retails for over $1,000.

Police and a fire department ambulance met the victim near the crime scene at Lakewood and Henderson shortly after 3AM.

She told them that the offender took her purse, which contained a cell phone and other items, before fleeing southbound on Sheffield toward Belmont.

The robber is described as a black man, 5'9" tall, and 150 pounds. He wore a distinctive red Pelle Pelle brand letterman jacket with white lettering and "sequins" on the back.

Other officers and even the ambulance driver reported that they saw the offender minutes before the robbery call came in—once at the Subway restaurant near Belmont and Clark and again walking eastbound on Buckingham Place near Halsted.

Unfortunately, officers were unable to locate the man after the robbery was reported.

The incident is recorded as an armed robbery in CPD case HX468088.

The no police thing really bothers me. I've been complaining to our alderman. This being an election year, I suggest if you are upset about the crime, or lack of police response, call your alderman. Let them know you will be voting for his contender without a crime plan for his district.

Michael Diversey's Closed?!

Darnit. I noticed the restaurant closed. I'm a bit surprised as it was always pretty busy. Anyone know if something new is going in? I hope so. I don't like the empty spaces on Diversey right now.

Although they are still looking for a storefront within walking distance of the old store, they are inviting people to shop at their new store, now open, at 3325 N Ashland across from Whole Foods.

Shoppers will be made aware of their store at 2705 N. Elston near Target and their store at 1590 N. Clybourn. The Clybourn store is near the Apple Store and the Red Line stop. The block has a reputation for "apple picking," so hold onto your smart-phone.

In the same shopping strip as their Elston store will be a medical marijuana dispensary at 2723 N Elston, next to the mattress shop where they can take a nap. The parking lot is often full. After the pot shop opens, parking may be tight as some people may drive there, park, forget they drove, and walk home. Only kidding, they'll be too stoned to walk.

None of the above will replace our neighborhood store within walking distance of Diversey/Clark/Broadway.

  • G.

    Bob,

Thanks for that information. I did stop by Vitamin Shoppe and found that out. I shop there fairly often but don't think I will as much (Amazon Prime will get my business) if they move so far away. The guy did say they were "stuck" with the spot about the old Nine West store. I asked why they didn't take those two floors. Hopefully they will move right next store.

I was standoff-ish, so he scurried off, but the while thing was so strange that I called the police to do a driveby. Afterward I did a quick Google search which led me to another post on their site from the North Center neighborhood.

So this guy's definitely a scammer. Just search this site for "neighbor in distress" and read the posts. Wanted to start a new post here since it appears the scammer is now starting to target the Lakeview neighborhood.

From the other posts, it appears the guy is after a few bucks, but who knows when that starts to escalate.

Guy was white, about 6', short hair, medium-light brown, maybe 50 years old. Wore a black leather jacket.

Just seems like this is too nice/affluent of an area for vacant properties for this long. A few lots farther south on Lincoln I see they are building something though... anyone have insight or knowledge of what we can expect there? Also the vacant lot kiddie corner from there next to the Paulina Brown line stop? I heard there might be a Walgreen's going there over a year ago but it is still just vacant land... just curious!

  • L

The SE corner is getting a development that includes a hamburger joint. There are other posts here about it if you search. The corner next to the L was supposed to get an apartment building, but nothing has been announced about that for a while.

  • Mixed use retail on the SE corner. RKF is the broker. You can Google news about it.

  • Thanks to posters above - I've been wondering the same thing recently, it's very noticeable now with all those vacant storefronts in what I would think is a pretty great location (affluent area, proximity to the El, plenty of foot traffic.) Plus that maternity store on the NE corner is also closing.

I did some googling and found the following:
    http://www.rkf.com/rkf-arranges-2985-sf-lease-for-bareburger%E2%80%99s-first-chicagoland-restaurant/

Looking forward to the new look to that corner next summer!

Police Activity at 555 Cornelia Ave

Seemed like there was a body on the ground beneath the balconies but I never heard any sirens or ambulances.... any one know what happened?

@ Lethe - I understand why you'd feel this way about the removal of the trees. Have you requested trees be planted via the city's website? I've done this twice and have had trees planted both times. That being said, I'm saddened to see so many homeowners, especially those who live in two million dollars homes, who just don't care about newly planted trees. When the trees were planted in front my building, I babied them for months on end. And I rent. I have nothing to gain by taking care of the trees other than making the world a prettier place. Trees make me tremendously happy. :-)

  • Andrea, replacement trees have been planted, (and babied, at least ours!). But even though they let you sort of choose - I think I remember them giving us a choice of three varieties - there's no guarantee you'll get what you ask for (we didn't).

I think the city could do a bit more outreach about the matter - making sure home and business owners know the care that is required, and that if they don't do it, it won't get done. Just hanging a flier on a door doesn't really do the trick. And some people think if the tree is planted by the city, the city will do follow-up care (and watering???). Or if it's an absentee landlord situation, there's no specific go-to person to provide the care and it comes down to whether a resident (like you!) takes it on.

Anyway, if you're reading this thread, please take care of your trees! And try to get the city people not to give them those high and tight haircuts, and don't cover their root crowns! Yay, trees.

He and the other taller guy, both in trech coats, were going around the block on foot Sun night about 9-10pm (Barry -kemore-Belmont-fletcher)and dissapeared just south of belmont on fletcher.
If you were a victim of the crime I suggest asking security at Illinois Masonic if they know the guy. -Might be transport, tech or maintenance. If he is the perp doing the crime he'll be easily id'd.
-the problem is getting the police there fast
