Parking

Found that a couple of cars are reserving parking with chairs and or boxes. I have permit to park on my block and feel that this is very inconsiderate and very frustrating. I understand if we had alot of snow but til now we havent. Worst is that these same cars kept putting these items after the snow was more than halfway melted away. I deal w every winter but this is ridiculous to so in this manner. If heavy snow hits , its all your for a while, but if we get an average dusting, no reason to do this to your neighbors. What is resolution? Is their one?

  • rene One of Morty's people

  • Justin K. McKinley Parker since 2008, south sider since 1998

For fun and amusement, switch all the dibs around on your block.

The Resurrection Project - Casa Querétaro

Does anyone know if "The Resurrection Project" (TRP) is a respectable property manager? I noticed they're building a large development on the corner of 17th and Damen. I checked out their other properties: Casas Guerrero, Maravilla, and Morelos by going to the City of Chicago's building dept. online. It seems there are no violations to speak of so they must be doing a good job?

I noticed Pilsen Alliance featured a story on their website that had an anti-TRP/Solis slant....

I checked out their other properties: Casas Guerrero, Maravilla, and Morelos by going to the City of Chicago's building dept. online. It seems there are no violations to speak of so they must be doing a good job?

I noticed Pilsen Alliance featured a story on their website that had an anti-TRP/Solis slant. http://www.thepilsenalliance.org/article/46

While looking up TRP's track record, I came across a lot of mudslinging. I hope I'm not inciting one of those lengthy, contentious threads for which EB is known, but would someone please enlighten me as to all the organizations and players that are supposedly fighting for Pilsen/Heart of Chicago?

  • TRP is pretty ineffective with anything other than taking public money to build private residences (like what you mentioned). TRP is pretty ineffective with anything other than taking public money to build private residences (like what you mentioned). It's the same-old, same-old Chicago nonprofit story with the executive director being there for too long and having too much of a controlling grip on what goes down. It needs new leadership blood, but that will never happen. Pilsen Alliance's former exec director cleverly referred to him as Raul "rey del mundo" - real name Raymundo - b/c of his short-man's macho complex and dictatorial approach

They try to do "community organizing" but again leadership doesn't understand it nor know how to do it. I'd say most residents in Pilsen have heard of TRP, but consider them pretty inconsequential in terms of day-to-day neighborhood life. Part of TRP being out of touch with the community is that they charge pretty much market rates for their apartments (albeit their apartments are in better condition than most Pilsen apts), and think they are charging a super affordable rate.

Also, they are in with the alderman, which can be beneficial, but it further discredits TRP's supposed community-based approach. They are not a voice for the community no matter how much they tout they are.

Finally, most of the parishes that they list on their website as partners are minimally involved in the organization, and some of them even resent that TRP lists them as a partner.

  • Thank you so much for a well written response to my post. It seems like the Lower West Side doesn't take to EveryBlock. So they charge market rent huh? That's interesting. I've driven by some of their properties in Little Village and Pilsen. I'm not impressed but they seem to...

Thank you so much for a well written response to my post. It seems like the Lower West Side doesn't take to EveryBlock. So they charge market rent huh? That's interesting. I've driven by some of their properties in Little Village and Pilsen. I'm not impressed but they seem to be better run than comparable buildings in Humboldt Park run by the likes of Bickerdike and Hispanic Housing. When I drove by, the surrounding areas were clean and well kept.

As far as being in with the alderman, I read somewhere that he and TRP were proposing a special tax for anyone who wanted to conduct business on 18th Street. When I read that I thought, do they want to drive businesses away? How would you characterize Solis' approach to business? I was talking to an employee at Plzn. She told me they made it virtually impossible for the owner to open. I can only imagine that by "they" she meant the Solis administration? It looks like he may be in trouble this year. He's going to at least be forced into a runoff. I'm seeing a lot of signs for Sigcho.

You said they TRP takes public money to build private residences. It would seem that the development on 17th, Casa Querétaro, is geared towards public housing. 15 of the 45 dwellings will be set aside for CHA tenants. The remaining 30 units will be affordable to households with incomes of up to 60% of area median income.

See for yourself at this link:

This Would Be A Great Spot For...?

Every Mexican restaurant that's opened at this spot has failed...probably because there are a million other Mexican restaurants within a half mile radius to choose from? This is a prime location right underneath the Damen Pink Line Stop. Does anyone have any ideas as to what kind of business would work here?

Abuelo's, which was in that space for a few years, was incredible. Delicious, fresh menu options, very cool decor, great service. What eventually killed them was that another place -- in Texas, i heard -- had the same name, and there were some petty legal disputes. The restaurant closed, tried to come back as El Fua, under different management, to no avail. Kobre followed, but was apparently never actually open to the public. I remember in 2007, when this spot was a cute woman-owned cafe and book store, even before it was Abuelo's. It's not the multitude of restos that makes the spot fail, because clearly so many spots are thriving and new cafes etc are opening up here. It's about management... and maybe the rent. (???) I wish the guys who ran Abuelo's would come back. :***(

  • I remember Abuelo's as well. I agree...it was great and I miss it. The restaurant that took its place, El Fua, wasn't great. It closed. I find it hard to believe that Abuelo's closed because of a squabble about its name. There must have been another reason.

    I also recall...

I also recall having performed there in a samba band when it was a "cute woman-owned café". That failed too...maybe it was ahead of its time. I'm thinking an empanada café would be perfect for that location. ...you like empanadas? I don't know of any in the area.

Right now I believe it's being rented by "El Jibarito Stop".

  • i freakin' love empanadas. make it happen!
