Gunshots or Fireworks - Damen/St. Paul?

Did anyone else hear what sounded like gunshots at 3:00am this morning (10/21) around Damen/St.Paul? I heard about 5-6 loud pops. Could have been fireworks as well. Just curious.

Remodeling Recommendations

Hi! We are looking to make some renovations to our condo, everything from painting cabinets and adding a kitchen backspash to remodeling our master bathroom and adding in-unit laundry. Any recommendations for a contractor?

We used Bryan Morrison at Nest Construction - 312.451.6690 and had an excellent experience. Incredible attention to detail and craftsmanship. He does a variety of things but he would be my first call for almost any project.

He did an incredible job on a roof deck, new door and frame, some custom woodwork, and a variety of smaller projects. This winter he we will have him back for some tile work and custom cabinetry. On top I felt like his prices were VERY fair. Its so hard to know what you are going to get but I am glad to pass him along.

    Anyway - good luck!

  • I highly recommend Design Invention, call Peter at 773-787-9776. The work he does is excellent, and his prices are reasonable and fair. He is also very responsive and honest; he would never do any work that didn't need to be done or cut corners.

He has won a Super Service Award on Angies list and had consistent A ratings from them as well. A close friend had a kitchen/bathroom remodel and central air conditioning installed by Peter and could not be more thrilled with the outcome and the entire process from start to finish.

Even if you might already be considering someone else, you should give Peter a call and let him give you a quote as well.

Garage Sale Questions

Hi all.

Has anyone had a garage sale recently? I heard that posting signs anywhere except on your own property is a no-no and that you need to have a permit. Is this correct?

Suz

  • HM1

I've had an officer stop by to check for our permit. We actually didn't have one because we didn't know we needed one, but she gave us a pass as long as there were no complaints. I'd get one just to be safe in the future.

My then-neighbors actually had theirs checked this year or last, I can't remember which. They have them alot. It only took them a few minutes to walk over to the alderman's office to get the permit. Although, I do remember them telling me after the first time how surprised they were at how rude the staff was there. The staff made a point of indicating the person that would check for it and the guy said something kind of rude/threatening to them -- as threatening as garage sale permits can get, I suppose. But, that's Rey Colon's office. Hopefully, you don't have to deal with them.

Lock you tires!

I recently had my spare tire stolen off my Jeep Wrangler. I did not have it locked as I bought it new and didn't think twice of it. This was me not thinking. I replaced my spare and bought locks and a tire cover. I have found my cover pulled back twice already when going back to it in am. Neighbors be aware.

  • You might also want to consider a catalytic converter lock as Jeeps are favored among thieves due to the ease of access. Trust me, I know and a $2,000 repair bill is sure fire way to ruin your day.

  • If you have a Wrangler, it is easy to get into the hood also. I got a lock installed on mine that uses the ignition key to open it. There were several times that I found the hood latches undone on mine, but they couldn't get in. Just a thought.

  • My husband's was stolen yesterday off his jeep liberty. His was locked and had a cover on it.

Lost Keys (Wicker Park/Bucktown)

I seem to have lost my keys sometime between Thursday eve and Saturday. There are 4(?) keys on the ring - a Saab remote key, 2 bike lock keys and a locker key. Most likely lost in the Wicker Park/Bucktown area - maybe near Erhler or Holstein Parks.

Thanks.

Stolen Spare Tire

Overnight, my spare tire was taken out of the protected locked case on the back of my RAV4 at North Avenue and Honore. Please help me understand...

  • Jon Banks supervisor banks

I've had my spare stolen 3 times. Be sure to call the police. So many people don't call the police to report these types of crimes (although most insurance companies will require a police report) because they think the police won't be able to help. The reality is the more reports the police receive in an area the more police will be dispatched to the area. Granted the increased police presence won't remain but its better than nothing.

  • Kim,
My spare was stolen too a couple years ago. It's mounted under the back of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Looks like they cut the cable. I replaced it with a new tire and a used rim which I now keep inside the rear luggage area.

I'm not even sure where I was parked when it was stolen. So, it may have happened in Lakeview or some other neighborhood on the northside.
I filed a police report. I just paid out of pocket because my insurance deductible is higher.

2. Every day I see foolish people, going back from the EL station, crossing kity-corner from the SW corner to the NE corner of North and Damen rather than crossing North Ave. going north and then east across Milwaukee. The city has paved this safer crossing route with distinctive pavings between the cross-walk lines and fenced in part of the SW corner. Clearly, this is insufficient. I suggest lettering the street facing each corner with lettering saying something like "Do NOT Cross Here" and a skull and crossbones to point out how dangerous and stupid that route is.
3. Milwaukee is now a major bicycle route. I can understand bicycles can safely go through stop signs on side streets. They cannot safely weave around cars and go through red lights at the North - Damen - Milwaukee intersection and yet they do. I suggest adding bicycle red and green lights (see the intersection of Milwaukee and Elston for examples) at our intersection. If bikers violate them, give them tickets. They may howl; but, it may save a few lives.

Looking for People for a Regular Pickup Basketball

I am looking to start a regular pickup basketball game somewhere in the vicinity of Bucktown/Wicker Park/Logan Square/UK Village (basically somewhere in a near west neighborhood). I have a couple ideas on possible locations, but the most important thing is to get enough people on an email list to have at least 10 guys to run each week. Message me if you're interested!

  • Definitely interested. Let me know where you are thinking of playing and when.

  • Alright... seems like there's a decent mass of people wanting to play... could everyone send me your email address and I'll get a list going. Also, let me know if you have a day preference.. Thanks!

The mixed-use residential and retail development at 1759-67 N. Milwaukee Ave. would be designed by Hirsch Associates.

This article has 1 other Chicago location (Show)

Elsewhere in the neighborhood, Centrum is also seeking an upzone to build a seven-story, 77-unit apartment building at 1660 W. Division St. near the CTA Division Blue Line "L" station, though that plan is currently at a stand still due to similar concerns about height and density, Tamminga said.
