Outrageous water bill

Does anyone know how (step by step) a family that got a $4,000.00 water bill can resolve it? There's no question that they used that much water (they hadn't) and even with the sewer bill or a leak in the street (which is what they know happened) there's no way they can pay this. What do they do first?

  • We are going through a similar situation. The cause of our bill is the fact that we failed to register a property that we are gutting as "vacant" metered. Our water bill was almost $3000 for an 18 months period in which we used no water. We are fighting it but doubt that it will get resolved in the byzintine city hall empire.

Missing orange and white cat- PLEASE HELP!

My cat Aurora has been missing since Wednesday. She is an outdoor cat but always comes home for meals and has never been gone this long. I saw her briefly on Tuesday night, but she did not accept my offer to go inside. Please let me know if you have seen any cats around Winchester and Augusta/Iowa or beyond.

  • Jen

She may have been taken to animal control. Check there daily bc there is no stray hold period for cats anymore so it could get scooped up by a rescue right away

Hi there!

We have an amazing nanny and are looking for a family with whom to share her. The family we currently work with is moving to the burbs (c'mon!).

We'd love to work with a family who is:
· Currently living in Wicker Park, Bucktown, West Town, Ukranian Village (We live in Wicker Park)

· Needs a nanny 7:30am - 6pm Mon-Fri or Mon-Thurs

· Has only 1 child 3-12 months old (ours is 7 months)

· Willing to split time between the two homes, or wants us to always host

· Is ok with our dog (she's a gem with kids)

· Able to start June 8th (specific date is flexible)

We are a laidback couple who are heavily involved and committed to our child's well being and happiness. We believe in a positive, learning environment for our child. Here's the best part: We've already vetted out a nanny and she's fantastic. We've been using her for 3 months so the hard part of finding, interviewing, and taking the leap of faith has already been done. She has her own transportation and all certifications, etc are up to date. She's awesome! We pay her $15 / hour which is split between the two families.

This situation is as turn-key as you can get, all we need is a second family! Let us know if you are interested by replying to this post or emailing me at whitney.gooley@gmail.

Thank you!!

Crossfit gyms & the noise they make

A *certain* crossfit gym moved in next to our apartment building. They lift up the garage door in back and blast loud, raging music from speakers from 6am-9pm. It's impossible for (a lot of) us to enjoy a peaceful moment outside, which is sad and frustrating.

There are a group of us in the building (and surrounding buildings) that agree on the intolerable level of disruption this has caused.

I'm aware of noise violations considering music, but a big problem is also the heavy weights they repeatedly drop throughout the day. The sound and vibration is so intense that the art on my walls shakes and dishes rattle on our cabinets. It's the worst thing to wake up to.

Apparently this is a loophole in noise violations?

Does anyone have any experience or advice? I'd really appreciate it.

  • Hi there CurleeKristen -- I am a reporter for a national newspaper and I am looking into a story on noise issues that arise when gyms move into urban locations near condos.I am looking to talk with neighbors like yourself who can talk about why this is an issue and the hardship it creates. Can you call me? 202.862.6637

  • CurleeKristen-- could you call me back? forgot to take down your number! josh

Thanks to Alderman Moreno for taking the garbage out

After weeks of repeated calls and emails to a variety of municipal entities, one finally rose to the challenge and took some responsibility for cleaning up the west side of the highway embankment that borders the Kennedy between Fullerton and Altgeld, just north of Aabitt Adhesives. This is a public thank you message to Alderman Moreno's office.

For anyone who's familiar with the strip, and other strips like it, they are popular dumping grounds for the homeless, visiting day-trippers, and late-night tipplers. The garbage has a good way of attracting rats and more garbage. After my wife and I cleaned it three times ourselves, we decided someone else had to take some ownership – so we started dialing for dollars.

This past Saturday, as promised by Moreno's office, a Sheriff's van showed up with a work crew provided by Tom Dart's SWAP (Sheriff's Work Alternative Program). Orlando from Moreno's office coordinated the effort and supervised as they raked out the trash and disposed of it. I spoke with a facilitator and he said this is a "free" program offered by Tom Dart, and that Aldermen simply have to put in the request. Apparently the work crews are typically a couple dozen strong (or more), but the one that came out on Saturday had just seven guys.

I did have to intervene a little bit toward the end when they were pulling away without having completed the job (there was still a section of the land covered with trash that for some reason they were avoiding). But after I pointed it out, they quickly disposed of it all. So thanks again, to Joe Moreno's office, Orlando, Tom Dart's SWAP program, and all those who've thought to make the same call about this filthy forgotten strip. Hopefully we can keep it clean longer than a couple weeks.

  • You're Awesome.

  • Way to go! I drove by Monday eve and was pleasantly surprised about how good it looks! Take my advice on the weed spray and the apron should stay weed free for the summer.

  • I'm jealous - half my building has been calling the alderman to get a clean up crew to take care of an alley and we are getting nowhere.
