Flexible dog walker business??

I am looking for a dog walker but I do not have a regular or consistent schedule. My fiancé is on the road for work sometimes and other times he works from home. Also I work at a restaurant from 3-11 so the weeks I need a dog walker I am looking for someone to come around 6:30 and not during the "normal 9-5". Does anyone know of a business that offers occasional and after hours service??

Thanks!

  • I've had good success with superdogwalking.com. They'll do later walks from 4p-8p for a slightly higher rate ($18 for two dogs) as well as weekends. Bonded and insured, you get the same walker each time unless they're sick or OOT. Dana, the owner, is very quick to reply to emails and handles everything very professionally.

  • We use IPetChicago. I'm SUPER picky about pet care, and they are 100% professional.

What's up with the traffic at the Webster on ramp?

Hi Everyblockers - anyone know why this entrance to 90/94 has become crowded over the past few weeks? Usually there were no other cars or just a few at 7:30 am when I am there. Now there are several and often I have to sit through three cycles of the light. Thanks for any 411!

Concrete / Construction Damage

Does anyone know of the construction company that is re-doing street corners near Damen & Armitage? I live close to the corner, and the work being done has damaged the sidewalk concrete near our front gate. It now looks like a pile of rubble, all crumbled. I'd like to contact this company to repair the damage. Any information is appreciated!

  • Artist girl Artist and Muscian

It may be the city itself that is re-doing the street corners. It would either be through the City Department Of Transportation, or Streets and Sanitation. They are notorious for making messes and not fixing them, so good luck.

Wicker/Bucktown community garage sale?

Is there any kind of community event/sale for residents of Wicker Park and Bucktown to sell their stuff? Like a very large garage sale? I would like to get rid of something things but I don't want to just set up a table outside my building.

Silver Cloud now Kitten's Corner

Anyone have any news about Silver Cloud? Noticed they got evicted and now have a sign up saying Kitten's Corner coming soon.

  • Alisa DNAinfoCHI Wicker Park/Bucktown/WestTown reporter

Saw the sign too and pretty sure it is a joke.

  • Tom

A sign on the window today said temporarily closed for renovation.

Bucktown's Blighted Northern Gateway at Milwaukee, Western Ripe for Change

BUCKTOWN — A blighted patch of Bucktown at the southeast corner of Milwaukee and Western avenues could be seeing its next chapter, now that an unused parking lot belonging to the shuttered Illinois Title Loans complex has been bought.

Next to the CTA Blue Line Western "L" station and across from a recently remodeled McDonald's, the corner properties include the parking lot at 1924 N. Milwaukee Ave. and the loan company building at 1920-22 N. Milwaukee Ave.

"I feel like that corner has bigger potential. It's by the [CTA] Blue Line, with so many places right by it like the Belly Shack and Green Eye [Lounge]," said Jess Waldman, an art instructor at nearby Easel Art Studio, 1911 N. Milwaukee Ave.

Good Tailor in the Area

I'm looking for a good tailor in the area to do some revisions to a dress. I'm fine with going to a dry cleaner or an individual who works out of their home. Anyone have any recommendations?

  • AMG

Did you try searching for tailor or seamstress in the search box (upper right)? This question has been asked a lot.

    Good luck!

  • Nope, didn't try that. Thanks!

  • I always go to Fame cleaners on Division. They do a great job.

PRO in old Pinch Spice Market space

Hi - I saw a sign for PRO coming soon in the window of the old Pinch Spice Market space on Milwaukee at Western (1913 N. Milwaukee). Does anyone know who/what they are? I couldn't find anything online. I'm just curious.

  • Yes, I'm wondering the same thing. Also, I noticed that there's a lot sectioned off at the corner of Western and Milwaukee for sale...

  • Hoping DNA Info sees this. She's usually in the know.

  • PRO is Pro Computers Chicago. They do computer and smartphone service and repair. They are moving from North Avenue near 5411 empanadas. Nice People.

What is this plant?

Does anyone know what kind of plant this is? It looks like it would be painful to the touch but it's not. I'm curious.

  • Milkweed. That's a pod that opens up and had big silky "parachute" with a seed at the end. They pop open at the end of fall when the pod dries out and turns brown. It gets its name for the milky substance in the stem when you break it open. It's not poisonous or spiky. We used to play with them as kids when the pods broke open.

  • Thanks RaleighsMa. I didn't know that, but I've heard milkweed is needed for the butterflies, especially migrating Monarch's. So I won't pull any out if I see it.

  • Yes! Please leave it for the monarchs! If you'd like any information, go to monarchwatch.org.

Everyblock vs Nextdoor in Bucktown

I have my favorite but would like to hear what peeps up in Bucktown think.

If you could only use one, which would you choose? ...and why? Which do you find to be more informative, to have better features, community outreach, support etc? ...or is there another social neighborhood network you prefer to use? ie Facebook, Yahoo Groups, Foursquare

To help compare, i put together a chart:

For those who are not familiar with ND, but curious, here's an invite link:

  • NRS

Just out of curiosity- are you promoting next-door.com? I notice that you have posted on a ton of EB neighborhood boards.

  • Todd Agosto Analyst/Investigator at Veritatem Cognoscere

No, just curious what people think of the two. Hyperlocal social networks show a lot of promise for community building but i question how effective their differing approaches are.

  • I looked at NextDoor awhile ago and they wanted too much personal information. You can have my email address but you don't get to have my real address or anything else. Here's a funny line from your second link:

LOL. To ensure my privacy you need me to reveal and verify where I live? Why? The only thing Everyblock asks of you to sign up is a valid email address. Fine. That's all any site really needs to know about you.

Rahm's 1st jumbo LED billboard going up right now

Rahm's 1st jumbo LED billboard going up in Bucktown today.
This was billed as an income-generator for Chicago but turns out its not.

If you're not happy about it- remind him by voting him out on Feb 24th.
In the meantime, if you live by one of these, its time to order room-darkening curtains!

If you want to see just how bright these things are when they go out of wack, take a stroll tonight at Wabansia and Ashland. The Illinois Lotto (south facing) LED faulted with the storm last week. At least Vegas maintains its LEDs. Chicago ... not so much. Shouldn't there be a citation for violation of the City's Code and a commensurate fine? It's not like this does not happen routinely.

Chicago New Democratic Party

Come and join the future of Chicago.

I'm glad you asked, this is part of a process. Essentially I'm looking for 100 individuals from within the city to establish a political party. The party's primary objective this election season is to assist me and other potential candidates win elections in 2015. Now I'm planning an event next week to outline what the Chicago New Democratic party is, our benefits for participating in it, and the roles we can play in it.

I have lots of information about my campaign, but it does not reflect the role of the Chicago New Democratic party, I opted on having two to three events exclusively about the Chicago New Democratic party next week (so you can view this as advertising).

Because the party hasn't officially started yet and I don't even know if I'll be one of its' officers... I stayed away from writing anything about the future political entity.

Moms Group/ Play Group in Bucktown or Logan Sq?

I am a new stay at home mom w/ a 1 yr old boy. I'm wondering if theres a play group in my area we can join?

  • There's a weekly playgroup that meets at Brentano Elementary which is in Logan Square near Diversey and the interstate. I've never been since my kids are older and in school all day but it sounds like a great group.

It's every Monday from 10 to noon at Brentano Elementary, 2723 N. Fairfield Ave. Enter through the main door, sign-in in the office and we are in room 117. I have a 1 year old and a 3 year old who both really enjoy it and there are lots of kids clustered around the 13-18 month range. Message me if you have any questions.
