Amazing Retail Space for Rent at Wicker Park/Ukrainian Village

Hello! Everyone,

If your currently in the process of renewing or opening your new business, you should consider leasing this amazing retail space at 1102 N. Ashland. This place comes with almost 2,000 square feet. It is completely remodeled. This was formerly a martial arts academy, and was very well taken care of. It has new wood floors, white high ceilings, stainless steel mirrors, and a bathroom with shower. Not to mention the entrace which has vintage metal columns and large stainless steel doors with thick glass. Better to see it person than on pictures! Feel free to shot me an email if your interested in viewing it.

Catalytic Converter stolen 2/26-2/28

Had my catalytic converter stolen in the 1700 block of N Hermitage sometime between the evening of Thursday 2/26 and midday Saturday 2/28. Doubtless this happened around 3 or 4 in the morning, but just wanted to give everyone a heads up anyway. Keep your eyes open!

Side note: are the same cars usually targeted over and over again? I've heard the new converters they use as replacements these days aren't as valuable as the originals...

  • Shannon Connolly bucktown

Last year I got mine stolen twice in two weeks. I got my car back from getting fixed and it happened again. So, in my experience they target the same cars. It really sucks. I put the catalytic converter lock put on my car, so far so good.

  • L.J

Thanks for the response, Shannon. Is the lock you are referring to the cat clamp? Did you install it yourself or have it installed at a shop in the area?

  • Shannon Connolly bucktown

Mine is called the cat lock. I had it put on at a ntb in the burbs. I am sure most places would put it on for you.

Late night license

I hear the owners of the new bar (owners of owl) are going to be seeking a 5am license. Any thoughts on crime levels and general "trouble" after owl opened up? I think once that goes in it could open up some more business on that desolate block. Thoughts?

  • tom in bucktown on and off Chicagoan for 10 years

I'm betting we would see some of the vacants around the new "owl" would convert to new businesses. The downside would be noise after midnight. Since the blue line runs by every 20 minutes after midnight already I'm leaning toward signing.

Any issues with crime around the owl?

While i'm not necessarily in favor of a late night place, it is planned for Milwaukee Ave after all. I chose not to live on a major street in Bucktown such as Damen, North, or Milwaukee because of the bars and nightlife. If there is going to be a late night bar, having it on one of these streets is really the only option. This stretch of Miwaukee is in need of development and I'm sure there is going to be lots more planned.

Yet ANOTHER shooting at Koncrete, formally known as Krush

One man shot another as they stood in the outdoor smoking area of what is now known as "Club Koncrete" at 1675 N. Elston in the Bucktown neighborhood.

The incident occurred last Sunday morning Feb 22 at approx 2am on the clubs property.

Almost 3 years ago one person was killed and another critically wounded in a shootout outside the club (read more here:http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-3-shot-1-dead-on-south-and-northwest-sides-20120218-story.html

The proprietors of the club have been through many City investigations and have continually been given the green light to re-open by the City's Dept. of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection.

Damen Blue Line Station Renovation: $13,600,000.00 (est.)

As a longtime rider of the the Blue Line, I was underwhelmed with the renovation that was completed a few months ago. At what cost? $13.6 million? Excuse me?

Here is a link to a description of the work: http://www.transitchicago.com/news_initiatives/projects/ynb_improvements.aspx#damen

Can anyone shed some light on what may have generated such a ridiculously high bill for what seems to be a pretty straightforward project?

  • Mike Conover '90's HP block orginizing,CAPS- resident since '07

It was likey a lot more expensive to rehab the station keeping the retro look & finishes, than it would have been to go modern & generic.

  • Scott Rappe Architect, Father, Fourth Generation East Villager

As an architect that does some public sector work, $13m sounds par for the course. Municipal transit work is an entirely different world than the one most of us live in.

Federal, state & local jurisdictions, layers of project management consultants, accessibility requirements, hazardous materials abatement, Secretary of the Interior Standards for Rehabilitation, municipal liability concerns, union scale wages, MBE/WBE set-asides, months of temporary shuttles between stations...
frankly, at $13m there's not a penny left for graft.

My regular sitter, who is fantastic, and has sat my dogs for over 6 years, is unable to do so. Does anyone know of a responsible person whom can walk my dogs 3 times a day and feed them? The individual can stay in my apartment if need be.

Please call my cell phone: 312-852-8669
or email me: cztony@aol.com

I appreciate your neighborly help,

Cell Phone Thieves!

Careful Bucktown / Wicker Park area!

A friend got her cellphone stolen

"i did that thing where women look behind them to make sure they're not being followed--twice. both times, there was no one behind me. as i was about to cross bloomingdale, some dude ran up behind me, yanked my cell phone out of my coat pocket, and hopped into a getaway car that was waiting for him on bloomingdale"

they're driving around in a light blue or silver acura coupe IL plate: E45 1644

  • What time of day did this happen?

  • George West Bucktown Resident

Given you have the license plate I hope your friend made a police report. If so, I live in the building on that corner and our landlord has security cameras filming down both streets. I'm not sure how long they keep them. Doesn't make me feel too safe that they are hiding out right around the corner of our building!

Aldermen Question

I've lived in several cities none of which have had aldermen. Given the notoriety of corrupt politicians in this city, what the hell do they actually do? Are they just middlemen for actually getting things done ie impeding progress for personal gain? I've been here for 7 years now and haven't a clue what they do or accomplish besides annoy me with advertising. Do my taxes
pay these idiots? Can't we just vote on things without them?

Signed, very confused

  • The amount of time they waste securing their own power through devious political means. Truth is, they could be administering good government and achieving the same success called re-election. This is why I don't believe in term limits: elections are our built-in form of term limits. If you don't get the result you wanted, be an adult and realize that is democracy. Voting is a minor hindrance. You want the people who you think "do nothing" out, vote...volunteer...do something. Don't complain.

  • I do vote. Every time. Still doesn't change the fact the aldermen are worthless.

Is Briciola in Chicago Closed?

Is Briciola in Chicago Closed? I drove by there a few times and there is a large sign on the fence on the outdoor section of the restaurant that says "Not Briciola"

  • DanC Wicker Park Resident. WFH-er

Actually the sign says "Restaurant for Rent (not Briciola) "

I'm assuming owner has another property to rent out.

  • Alisa DNAinfoCHI Wicker Park/Bucktown/WestTown reporter

It is not closed. There is a restaurant next store, behind the outdoor patio, that is for rent. The owners of Bricola did not put up the sign, their landlord who also owns the adjacent property did. I thought the same thing you did and stopped in to ask a few months ago.
