Rory Fiedler: Who's Backing Him?

Hm. So I saw that this guy filed to run against Pawar in the 47th. Is this the "Jeri's Diner Candidate" that some of the old Machine stalwarts were talking about digging up a few months ago, or just a random independent? Curious if anyone knows about his candidacy at all.

  • On the counterpoint, my husband and I actually bought property here specifically because of the TIFF. We were already renters here and this just sealed the deal. We were happy to pay a little more for guaranteed improvements to the neighborhood. We haven't been disappointed.

  • @Stacy K. I'm so glad you challenged Fiedler for a specific answer on the #11 bus. And I'm glad he admitted that Pawar did indeed address it long before Fiedler's literature. It appears that came to his senses and deleted that comment from his Facebook page (along with your comments unfortunately Stacy K.)

Yard Waste, Trash Issues

A neighbor of ours is filling our trash cans entirely with leaves. We've asked (in person, nicely) for this to stop, but we weren't taken seriously. I'm not sure what we can do next. Would we be fined for having trash cans full of yard waste? Should we request an extra trash can for our neighbor? We don't have enough space for our trash now. Thanks, everyone!

Hello thanks for the letter. I am glad that you all will help keep the street and alley nice
I was just bummed bc after working for several hrs he approached me and instead of saying thanks and ur right I will help. His response is I didnt know u were the one doing it all. And also I will call my landlord to have him help We all know ur landlord is a total slum lord. I hope the new owners r better then the previous ones that let it forclose. Remember up until last year ur property was so infested w rats that streets and sans came every week to bait because the amount of holes on property were considered a health hazard. Clearly ur landlord didn't care so when he offered that i was annoyed. I appreciate ur offer in helping out I don't want it to go back to what it was a few urs back. It took a lot of time and money to clean it up

  • Cheers, all -- we're unsubscribing from the thread since this is resolved.

Residential winterization services?

I live in a condo that has cold wind drafts coming from the windows and baseboards. Was curious whether anyone knew of a company that would provide winterization services to address these issues? I looked online and could only find plumbing/pipe winterization services. Appreciate any referrals!

Places to walk in the woods and hour from Lincoln Square

Tomorrrow is going to be a sunny day and we would love to find some woods to walk in with in an hour of here. Any suggestions.

  • One of my favorite and most used books is 60 hikes in 60 miles the Chicagoland edition. You will have so many places to choose from.

  • Senseis: Thanks for the recommendation. Was just delivered and it looks like a great resource!

Where are your favorite places to look for rental housing?

I have used Apartment People in the past, and have been looking at Craigslist, Domu, and Chicago Apartment Finders. Do you have a favorite property management company in the neighborhood? Thanks!

  • We live in a two flat on the first floor and rent out the second floor. We never advertise with any apartment service because they charge too much. We always advertise on Craigslist and I strongly suggest using that service because there is no middleman. We have never had a problem getting tenants and tenants are happy. Because we live on the first floor, my husband fixes anything that is broken right away, and if there is a problem we are instantly available.

  • zippy8 mostly happy resident

How do I say this without offending those who live in CHA housing... People who are stuck using CHA include seniors on Social Security with mostly exhausted savings or the physically or medically disabled. Nothing "wrong" with them. I knew a mathematician who was a holocaust survivor and he lived in public housing for years. He was finally able to move when he received his survivor's payment.

I'll consider renting to tenants through public housing but just screen them very well.

Ballet students from Ravenswood Manor's Le Ballet Petit (LBP) will perform the classic holiday ballet, The Nutcracker, on Saturday and Sunday, December 6 and 7, in the theater at UNO Rogers Park Charter School, 7416 N. Ridge Blvd. in Chicago. Both performances are at 2 p.m.

Tickets for The Nutcracker are on sale now and may be purchased online at http://leballetpetit.tix.com or at the LBP studios at 4630 N. Francisco Ave. Tickets will also be available at the door on performance days. The reserved-seat tickets are $8 each (convenience fees apply for online purchases). For more information about tickets or the performance, please call the LBP studio at 773-463-3385.

LBP’s The Nutcracker will feature more than 100 student dancers from Ravenswood Manor, Albany Park, Lincoln Square, Northcenter and surrounding neighborhoods. This professional-style production offers a family-friendly opportunity to enjoy the grace, beauty and magnificence of ballet through a familiar holiday story.

Le Ballet Petit is a non-profit dance school founded more than 60 years ago by Kitty LaPointe, a professional ballerina and Ravenswood Manor mom. LBP, still located in the Ravenswood Manor neighborhood, now offers dance education to more than 300 students, aged three to adult, through classes in ballet, pointe, jazz, hip-hop, tap and more. In addition to a year-end Annual Recital, LBP students have the opportunity to perform in two full-length, professional-style ballet performances each year, including Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and an annual spring ballet. (LBP dancers will perform Swan Lake on April 18 and 19, 2015.) Le Ballet Petit is also home to the Living By Performing Dance Company, which performs competitively around the region and nationally.

What's Burning?

We're at Rockwell and Gunnison and there is a ton of smoke and sirens on Lawrence. Anyone know what's going on?

  • It was a garage on fire off the alley between Talman & Washtenaw, just South of Lawrence. No one was hurt, not sure how it started, but did hear a loud boom before sirens...unsure if it was related though.

  • Listen to a police scanner.

Anyone have a rec for someone to fix jets on a tub? Also need to have our fireplace checked out.

Our tub and fireplace have been busted for a while...don't know who you call for either. Is it an electrician or a plumber for the tub? And do you call any fireplace company? Is it pricey?

Thanks!

Items to donate

A while ago someone was asking for kitchen items to donate to a homeless initiative (I don't remember if it was a group, shelter, etc). I had a bunch of stuff collected and some clothing items as well. Then she disappeared after having several missed connections for pick up. I have a pile of stuff in my appartment that myself and my husband are tired of looking at but I wasn't sure where to donate. I have sent stuff to Uptown but if there is something in my neighborhood (Albany Park, Ravenswood, Northcenter area) I'd like to send it there. Anyone have a preferred place to donate items?

  • tk lincoln square family

I donated to American Indian center yesterday thanks to this thread. Cool building by the way!

I take it you must already have the shades? I would think that most places would come over and take measurements of your windows, order them, and then install them for you. That said, they should be pretty easy to install yourself. If they're inside mount then you just need to screw some brackets into each side of the top of your window frame. If they're outside mount then you install the brackets on the wall above the window which will probably require some drywall mounts to make them secure. I realize you didn't ask this, so I would also recommend calling Dads Handyman Service if you really don't want to do it yourself. How many do you need to hang? I would try to find someone that will quote you a price and not an hourly rate.

babysitting

Hi I'm looking for a babysitter for my 9year old daughter. The hours would as needed, most often on the days that CPS schools are closed. This would during school hours from 8:30 untill about 4:30. Also once in a while on a Sunday evening. The pay would be $6-$7 an hour so an average of $50 a day. This may be ideal for a stay at home Mom, or for a Mom who's child also doesn't have school that day.( feel free to bring your child to my place), or an extremly reliable and responsible teenager. Emily is very sweet and low key some of her interests are reading, writing, and playing board games.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

My neighbors had great luck with finding childcare through the education department of Northeastern. Keep in mind that the going rate for teen babysitters is $8-12 an hour, and you probably won't find anyone at the rate range you are offering. Do you have any friends, neighbors or relatives who would be willing to trade childcare with you? This worked out really well for us; we also used the after school and vacation days programs at the JCCs on Touhy and on Melrose

  • She might be sweet and low key, but that's not even minimum wage and probably not worth it for most stay at home moms or nannies. Try sittercity, but you'll likely have to offer at least $10/hour.

  • Where are you located?
