Wedding Planner Recommendations?

Happy Wednesday Neighbors,

Does anyone have any wedding planner recommendations? I'm in need of a day-of coordinator, but also curious about how much more pre-planning might cost (I'm just a notch above clueless). I'm mostly looking for someone easy to work with that knows what they're doing, can guide/work with me vs. work for me, and who won't break the bank...

Thank you in advance!!!

Best place to get regular maintenance for my Camry?

I have a 2009 Toyota Camry, and it's a bit overdue for some regular maintenance. What's the best place for that? I live near Western and Lawrence.

  • Jeff with Floudas Automotive (next to BP station on Lawrence/94) is awesome. He works on all of the state patrol cars, very honest, reasonable, just an all-around good guy.

Package and mail ripped open - nothing actually stolen that I know of...

I live just north of Lawrence on Rockwell in a courtyard building with an outside locked door that leads to our foyer (door to stairwell also locked) and I had a package ripped open yesterday and some mail ripped open, but all was left behind. The person didn't actually steal anything (maybe the clothes I ordered weren't their taste), but I was wondering if anyone else in the area has had this happening to them lately? I would assume they saw the package and tried all the buzzers hoping someone would let them in thinking it was a delivery person.

  • You should file a report with the Postal Inspectors office. There is a rash of mail thefts/mailbox break-ins in the area that they are supposedly working on resolving.

  • Thanks, Candi, I will do that. I wasn't sure where to report. Zlatan--thanks for sharing.

cat groomer.

Can anyone recommend a cat groomer.

  • We tried to go to Zulu but their cat hours are very limited. There are not a lot of places that do cats. I don't think Soggy paws does anymore. We go to Desiree at Pet Smart on Elston. That is not right in the neighborhood, obviously, but she is great and there is flexibility on scheduling since they are open long hours (they don't do cats on weekends though).

  • Animal Lovers on Clybourn does a great job with our ragdoll!

How's the new Mediterranean restaurant on Wolcott/Montrose?

Looks like it's grand opening was yesterday...no reviews yet.

  • Went there on Tuesday (their first day open, apparently). The location is nice, the waitstaff super friendly and the beer was good, but the food was distinctly sub-par. They were very cool about it, asking us if things were okay and then taking our criticisms on board (and not charging us for stuff we didn't like) so maybe it will improve, but for now I'd just treat it as a bar rather than an eatery.

  • This is like the 4th restaurant to set up in that space in the last 5 years. I suspect that address may have been placed under a curse or malicious spell of some kind.

Garage space for rent?

Anyone know of a garage space for rent in the Lincoln Square/Ravenwood area? We have a catalytic converter thief on the loose and that's the last thing we need these days. Thanks in advance.

To save on my bill I am considering switching from my AT&T landline to Comcast phone service. Does anyone have any experience with this, positive or negative? I read that number portability can depend on where you live, and Comcast may not always give you the correct information up-front. Thanks in advance.

Street Cleaning Question

I've always always always had parking....and now I'm parking on the street. With these street cleaning signs posted on one side of the street....that means I shouldn't park on that side of the street during the day and time posted, right? I can park on the other side of the street that day and time and not get ticketed, right?

  • Read this article regarding Snow Route signs: http://theexpiredmeter.com/2008/12/the-lowdown-on-snow-routes/

Essentially, you can be ticketed and towed when the snow is more than 2" deep at these locations. It doesn't matter if there wasn't any snow when you parked your car.

  • I would never risk parking anywhere that signs indicate a ticketing or towing time. Tickets are a way to increase revenue and you should always be cautious when parking. The ticketers don't ride on the back of the street sweepers and come around at different times than the sweepers. Ive...

I would never risk parking anywhere that signs indicate a ticketing or towing time. Tickets are a way to increase revenue and you should always be cautious when parking. The ticketers don't ride on the back of the street sweepers and come around at different times than the sweepers. Ive seen people get tickets before the street sweepers arrive and after the street cleaners have left. I have learned this lesson the hard way.
I have yet to figure out the 2 in snow rule. I wake up on snowy mornings fearing my car is buried under tickets or off in some tow lot.

Expert on flooring?

Hello, I am looking for some advice on renovating the floor of my studio (it's a business). Looking for a contractor to give me a free quote. Thanks!

  • Thanks everyone. Here is more information to help:
Currently I have padded interlocking flooring covering up some very unattractive cement and tiled flooring, in addition to baseboards that are coming up from the cold winter we endured. I am not sure if I want hardwood floors or just a clean up of the work that was previously done, so getting someone in here to let me know my options I suppose is my first thought.

Hi. I live in an apt. building. I'm cleaning out and have a bunch of stuff I'd like to sell. Including a bicycle, some furniture, and a bunch of smaller belongings. So - I don't have a yard, I don't have a garage, and I don't think my landlord would approve of me buzzing people into the whole building (and giving them access) if I have it in my apt. We have a courtyard, and I think I would kill all the grass and flowers if I had my belongings and people trampling on the grass all day. There's a very small bit of grass in front of my bldg, but again, I think my landlord would not be happy with the damage to the grass which is very well maintained.

I really need some good suggestions! Is anyone in Lincoln Square/North Ctr. thinking of having a yard sale or garage sale soon? Would you have some extra space, and I could pay you, barter, or work something out with you? I have too much stuff to bring it to a flea market. I am a friendly, considerate person, and we'd be happy to work something out with a neighbors or group of neighbors. Really need to sell some things soon. Thank you for any suggestions you may have!!!

Latitude changed hands

So, a coworker of mine mentioned to me that the Latitude bar/restaurant has recently changed ownership. I guess it's in the process of going through a rebranding and will be run entirely differently then in the past. My coworker knows the owners of the new establishment and has said that they have a much better food menu and will have a very good beer selection over time.

Has anyone been there in the past few weeks? I had only been there once before and service wasn't very good. I'd be excited to hear things are better with the new owners.

  • I went there for one of the World Cup games. I was impressed with the food.

  • lin ravenswood downsizer

Owen is the best. hard working tavern owner with desire to succeed and be part of the neighborhood. good food, friendly servers and bartenders. stop in and have a pint or two!

  • When they originally opened it was a regular spot for me.I don't really like veggie burgers but I couldn't stop ordering theirs. I think it changed hands, the menu tried to get to creative and the service tanked. I'm glad to hear is coming back to being a good neighborhood joint again

request the tree be placed. Is Green spray paint on curb

About a month ago, I requested that a tree be planted in front of my house. Last week streets & san drove by and spray painted a green line on the curb where I requested the tree be placed. Is this what the green spray paint means, or is this something else?
I'm thinking that it must be something else b/c Forestry service would be the ones planting a tree, not streets & sans, right?

  • Botkin Amateur photographer.

I think green = drone surveillance zone

  • dj long time RP home owner

In my part of Rogers Park utilities (gas, water) come in through the front and sewer out through the back. Tree roots really wouldn't be a problem wih the utilities (metal pipes) coming through the parkway but would be with the clay pipe and loose connections between sections in the back yard. Still don't know what green markings mean tho...

Looking for steel deck contractors

Hi,

We are thinking about adding a deck onto our residence and wondered if any neighbors out there had a good experience with contractors who install steel decks.

TIA (which my teenage nephew tells me is short for "Thanks in advance").

  • SBloom architect, dad and a half, 25 years north side

Since the wood porch collapse disaster, the City rewrote and upgraded the building requirements for wood porches which made constructing wood porches considerably more expensive. Steel decks are still more expensive, but when you factor in life cycle maintenance costs, steel is now competitive. I'm hoping I don't get a mini stroke when the bids come back.

Also, If you use steel, the deck can be built tighter to the lot line. According to code, wood decks need to be 6' from the lot line.

  • We rebuilt our wood deck a few years ago - it was a pain. The requirements are really strict now, and were so recently changed that our contractor didn't really understand them (he was a crummy contractor too, that didn't help) and we kept getting conflicting info from the inspectors. I don't doubt steel decks are competitive now. The only downside would be, there are probably less contractors that do them, so it may be hard to get good quotes.

We stopped to check on people and were told that 911 had been called at least 20 minutes earlier but there was no sign of them even though there is a police and fire station on Division at Larrabee literally minutes away. There were no obvious injuries but the woman responsible for the accident seemed really out of it and said she had trouble breathing which caused her to swerve into incoming traffic. Traffic was backed up because one of the lanes was blocked and someone asked us to ride over to the stations since 911 had already been called a few times so we did. As we were riding over, a police car went by on Division literally about 100 yards from us. We tried to flag down but he didn't see us.
We got over to the station and imagine our surprise when they told us there was nothing they could do because the location was out of their district. They looked it up and could see that the calls had been entered but all the available units in the neighboring district were currently occupied. Once they were free, someone would get over there.
I'll admit that I really don't undertand how the whole 911/district situation works but to have police officers and fire trucks within minutes of an accident scene not being deployed there to deal with the situation just because it is over their district line is beyond ridiculous.

Do you recognize this cat?

Saw this kitty on The SW corner of Giddings & Hamilton. I couldn't get closes enough to see the tag but he did have a collar. I'm guessing "he" because orange tabby are almost always male. He had a white tipped tail.

I will also check lost cat posting online.

  • You're probably right. I'm guessing from his demeanor that he was used to being outdoors. Just wanted to make sure nobody was missing...

  • He belongs to someone in the apt building on the NE corner of Giddings & Hamilton. Definitely an outdoor cat. He's a pretty smart old tom, but I would steer clear. When he actually goes missing, the owner is quick to put signs up around the neighborhood.

* Am a great cook--healthy and tasty meals usually--but can also make the "comfort foods" we all love too.

* Some child care--as the eldest of 7, helped raise my younger siblings, plus recently I've taken care of my friends' kids when they've gone out for the evening & when they've gone to Europe for 2 weeks. Can provide references

* Have 20+ years in sales & marketing, so if you need some help with marketing your business--or just need someone to type your manuscript--happy to help.

* Some personal care assistance--worked in a hospital many years ago plus experience working with family members who have challenges (my 25 year old niece was born with a neural tube disorder and my aunt had ALS)--so could provide some assistance to you.

I'm a nonsmoker and I don't drink (food allergy). My cat is quiet and shy--and we are looking to move by August 1st. Look forward to meeting you!

East Riverbank riprap

It was exciting to have access returned to the east riverbank this weekend.
I can't say like what I saw when visiting the river. The white riprap is not aesthetically pleasing. The bright white is blinding as it reflects the sun. It also replaced so much space for greenery... place used to have a magical feel...
Is this the final product? Any chance that riprap can be covered with soil / planted?
The said there would be more paths / access but this kind of feels like a concrete wall...

Maintenance Entering Your Apartment Without Permission

I've lived at the same building for a better part of five years (Leland and Winchester) and came home to this (photo). My shoes RIGHT at my front door, all neatly lined up.
I left this morning through the front door so obviously no way I would have placed them there.
I came home through the back door this evening, and the second I saw them I freaked out a bit.
Nothing was stolen that I know of. My credit card and jewelry are here, TV is still here...so I'm assuming it was a creepy-ass maintenance person.
Has anyone ever experienced this? Who DOES THAT?!?! Fricking creepy to the n'th degree. UGH.

  • KJinEdgewater edgewater renter

What if your landlord's realtor not only does a showing without notice but then leaves your door unlocked? Yeah. True story.

  • In Chicago, a municipal ordinance [Chapter 5-12] known the Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance ("RLTO" -- see http://www.tenants-rights.org/residential-landlord-tenant-ordinance/) prohibits entry to dwelling units absent exigent circumstances [i.e.,a broken water pipe, etc] or unless mngt provides a 48-hour notice. If entry is made to a dwelling unit, a written is required to be provided.
It's not a suggestion for building managers. It's a protection from managers and is a law. A law. A law.
