Coyote in the Hood

Hey everyone. Just wanted to mention that I saw a pretty big coyote at 7am. He was in the alley between Paulina and Hermitage at the 4400 block. He wasn't looking for trouble with us (me and 2 large dogs), but he was just behind a neighbors house, who I think has chickens...Just a heads up.

What's in a Name?

Why is the media calling it Ravenswood? I grew up a block away and it's always been called Lincoln Square. A tragedy to hear of the violence at the 2200 block of West Winnemac. D__mn these border changes. Darn them to hell! (Insert Heston waving fists at Statue of Liberty buried in Winnemac Park)

Thanks George F. Understanding motive is very important. Poor kids can make $$ selling drugs if no good jobs. Looks like Dushanti was on the right path once he found a job. If we put money into programs in the areas that these kids are coming from then we can prevent these tragedies. In fact, NPR did a story that we could free a lot of resources by putting the "unliminted" legal resources for police into a 3rd party who provides legal assistance for police. This way they will "behave" better and not feel they are above the law with a "free" team of attorneys. There is so much waste of resources that should be re-directed into areas of at risk youth who are trying to stay away from the gangs. We need to create the happy village for these kids as parents don't always have resources. Once pot is legal in Chicago - will there be more drugs and richer politicians? So many alternatives to drugs which we need to show to the kids that we DO CARE. They will be paying our social security so lets make sure they have great jobs!

Vintage Linen Repair Needed

I have an embroidered tablecloth from my mom that is about 50 years old. It has a few medium-size tears/holes that are not on a seam. I have no idea how to repair this or if it's even possible to do so. It is beautiful and very sentimental. Do any of you know of someone who might be able to help? Thanks so much in advance.

  • Thanks, Alice!

Hi Marsha, David Imperial cleaners on Bryn Mawr (near Kimball) cleaned and repaired my deceased mother-in-law's wedding veil prior to my wedding. I was beyond satisfied with their work and they understood the sentimental value. It was a bit pricey from what I recall, but the result was definitely worth it.

Lost dog

Last night, we lost our black shih tzu (Saturday March 28) on the 4200 Kedzie block. He was wearing a blue sweater and had been recently groomed. If anyone has any information, please call 773-814-7474, as our family is anxiously awaiting any good news. He is microchipped.

FREE: Fan and desk lamp (currently broken, will probably work again if you have electrician skils)

I have a fan and a desk lamp that have both stopped working for what I imagine are electrical reasons. I really don't need either of them anymore, and would love to give them to someone who will fix them up and put them to good use.

We are in the vicinity of Kedzie and Montrose.

Thanks neighbors!

Emergency on Lincoln

Anyone know what happened on Lincoln, by Bad Apple/Jewel last night? We were coming home around midnight and the street was blocked off there with firetrucks, ambulances and police. Scanned the news this morning but haven't found anything.

  • There was an apartment fire on the east side of Lincoln ave. If you know where the store Embelish is, it was one of the apartments above it. I could smell the smoke on Cuyler and then heard sirens about the same time around 1130pm.

I am looking to switch my wireless service from Verizon (only because my office building is the only place in the world that doesn't get Verizon service). I'm just wondering what other wireless services people have that get good service in the city and outside of the city.

LOST KEYS....

Walked on the east side of 4800 block of Ashland yesterday between 12noon and 5pm, Wed. 3-25-14 and lost a set of keys. Did anyone find some? Can you please contact me here on EveryBlock?
Thanks for your help,

Also was at the bus stops:
Lawrence just west of Ashland, north side of street.
Lawrence at Western heading back east.

Walked to Brown line from Lawrence.

And then (Ugh!) downtown.
I've called CTA and Brown line stations.
.... probably hopeless... hoping for that amazing miracle...

  • Lynda Bean Long-time resident.

Thanks Patrick and Rachel for the moral support. Miracles happen... keys have been found! I'm so relieved... I didn't post a lot of info about what was on the set to protect myself from an unlikely hero. If people found keys I figured they'd want me to ID the set... I would've wanted them to ID something specific to me so I could verify they actually had them.

Thanks again. Grateful for this forum.

  • You know how when you get replacement insurance cards there's always some blank plastic around them? Cut an oval, use a sharpie to put your number on either side, seal it up with clear packing tape so the marker doesn't run, and hole punch a hole. Viola, instant ID fob....

I've been doing this for years, I've never had to take advantage of it but after losing a set years ago I got proactive and that plastic around your insurance cards is perfect for making a little tag similar to a store loyalty card - only for loyalty to you. Plus, murphy's law states clearly that you will only lose your keys if there is no identification on them, putting a tag with your phone number on them insures them against getting lost. ;)

Anyone get a letter in the mail from "Clean Energy Option" which says, "Sign and return the enclosed form to run your home on clean energy"?

Anyone else notice that the return address is a rented mailbox at a UPS Store in the Loop?

Hi neighbors! Do you rent out your garage / lot / parking space? We are considering renting out our unused spaces (in a property we own) but had some questions:

• Is there such a thing as a garage rental lease and do you use one?

• Do you require a security deposit? Did you need to take out supplemental insurance?

• Do you rent your space out month-to-month, week-to-week, or for longer periods?

• Where do you advertise your space? Craigslist? Word of mouth?

• Are there legal (or otherwise complicated) issues that we should consider in advance?

  • I rent out a garage space. I always do a contract for the space, you can find samples online to use for your purposes. I have the space prepaid for the term on 3/6/12 month basis...saves the hassle of trying to get monthly payments for something small. If someone can't...

If someone can't afford to prepay, they might have issues with the monthly payment itself. Just saying...
Your homeowners insurance (provided it already is written up for renters, i.e. a multi-unit home) will cover the rental/issues. I put a sign out front and advertise on Craigslist. I am also very clear in the contract that the space is only for parking -- do not allow the space to be used for storage/repairs -- that can be a liability as well.

Hey everyone.

Moved into a smaller place and I'm wanting to get rid of this vacuum. It's yours for free if you pick it up. It's a Hoover and still has all the peripheral attachments. Only drawback is that it needs bags. I'll include a new one with it, though.

Will also sell the bed frame in the photo for $20 obo. Queen/full adjustable.

Looking for 3 bedroom unit to rent in or near lincoln square (less than $1500)

I have looked on Craigslist and thought I would ask here. I am interested in renting a 3 bedroom unit. An ideal unit would have parking, a dishwasher and an in-unit washer/dryer (or must have in building). We would prefer a unit facing the street, not on the first floor. Boundaries would be between Kedzie and Ashland and foster and Irving park. Thanks!

  • Like mentioned above you have more luck finding that near kezie. One of my friends pays $1000 for a 3 bedroom near montrose and kimball, and I've heard the rent is about the same all around that Albany park area.

  • @MalloryLN, actually the one near Sunnyside/Hermitage is overall lower rent than the one on Ainslie. Heat and hot water is included in the Sunnyside/Hermitage vs tenant is responsible for paying heat (may be even hot water) for the one on Ainslie.

Looking for apt in Lincoln Square up to $1,500

We are looking to rent a 1 - 2 bedroom apartment in Lincoln Square. We do have two very friendly cats. We would prefer an apartment that is updated with a dishwasher. Please let us know if you know of a place or any advice would be helpful. Thank you! We have checked Craigslist etc and we have noticed its mostly rental agencies reposting the same apartments. We would prefer to rent directly from the owners.
