Chicago Republican

Re Sun Times: "We need a mayor for all of us. Progressive Democrat Karen Lewis is considering a campaign against Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel," the writing says. "Join the “People’s Movement” for inclusion, equity, racial justice and participatory democracy and contribute today to help us reverse the bad policies of Mayor 1%."

Don't get me wrong, I respect Lewis. She's smart and fearless. She's also a left of Michael Moore.
I am watching the PBS series "The Roosevelt's" and these top 10 Presidents were both 1%ers. Please tell me, is she really the better choice for our city at this time?

Now that Fioretti's thrown his hat into the ring, I don't think Lewis will run. I don't have any inside information, but she was at a Fioretti event not too long ago, and she may be very aware that she would be a deeply polarizing figure.

All that said, anyone who thinks Rahmney Emanuel is a leftie has not been paying attention. I was no Daley fan, but I do respect that he prioritized several hours a day to meet with regular Chicagoans. Rahm pretty much only meets with people able to write a large (minimum 5-figure) check. Our new mayor made his millions thanks to some guy named Bruce Rauner.

Recently I received a letter from a debt collector on behalf of the Chicago Tribune. The company claimed that I owed $32.25 and that I needed to pay them immediately--or I could call them to plead my case.

Naturally, I called them. They refused to produce evidence of the debt or explain where it came from --other than to direct me to Chicago Tribune.

So I called Chicago Tribune. They claimed that I had signed up for a Tribune trial from a door-to-door salesperson/kid asking for a donation for their education. They said that I had been receiving newspapers for months (I hadn't) and they had been sending me bills.

I have no idea what they were talking about. Neither does my wife. We'd never seen a door-to-door Tribune salesperson, much less signed up for a subscription. If the Trib had sent any bills, we probably assumed it was unsolicited junk mail.

The customer service rep eventually credited the account, but not before admitting that there were others like me calling in about their own mystery bills.

My suspicion is that this door-to-door "salesperson" put us on the list without consulting us. I'm curious to know if anyone else has experienced this.

  • Chaya--yeah, I remember hearing that on some radio show, and that's exactly what I asked for from the debt collector. They got flustered but said they wouldnt do that--that I should just pay up.

  • MandaLeigh Here I Is.

Chaya, I just heard that on "This American Life" last week! I never knew that before the episode, and it's extremely beneficial to know that for instances exactly like this.

Anyone have a garage space for rent?

I just moved up to Lincoln Square, but my apartment only has street parking and my car is a plug-in hybrid (Chevy Volt) that I would like to be able to plug in at night. I would of course be willing to pay for the extra electricity, though it doesn't use much. There wasn't any noticeable increase in the electric bill at my last place.

Let me know!

  • I've been watching parking for the area on Craigslist and parkingspot.com for a while and I've seen quite a few garage spots come up (out of my price range, but sounds worth it for you). Also I am jealous of your Volt :)

Comcast anyone ?

How widespread is this COMCAST internet issue today ?

We've been out (or barely running) all day over here near Lawrence & Rockwell.

Comcast first said it had been going on since last night and would be on again a 2:30 pm ... and then that time came and went.

How can I post this ? Very carefully - sneaking through a rare ultra-slow service point evidently.

(Comcast should seriously look into improving the way they handle their customers)

  • I woke up to a busted internet (Comcast service), but I noticed by router was acting weird as well. After restarting my router around 9am, things are back to normal.

  • Mine went out yesterday afternoon. Of course, couldn't check on here or anywhere at the time, to see if it was just me or everyone.

So, RCN is a good alternative? Last time I heard about them, people were complaining about some shady business practices, but that was a few years ago.

Comcast internet outage Lincoln Square...?

My internet has been balled up since last night around 3 AM, my line speed is all over the place, jumping from 0.1 MB/sec to the 50 MB/sec that I pay for and back again second-by-second. DNS seems FUBAR.The DOCSIS config file bound to my cable modem looks wrong, which has my cable modem saying "IPV6 ONLY" which doesn't really seem right either....

Comcast is acknowledging a problem on their Customer Account - Support page, I wonder how widespread it is.

Anyone else out there having Comcast Internet issues?

My internet almost always works just fine. It's been very reliable and speeds have been quite consistently at least 50 MB/sec. This outage has been the exception rather than the rule. I think my trouble started during what turns out to have been a planned outage- maybe something didn't go right for the techs during the planned outage and it took longer than expected to make things work properly. Dog trainer reco

Any recommendations for a trainer that's not too far from Lincoln Square OR do you know of any that do like 1 week boot camps that you send your dog to for intensive training?

  • Urban Pooch is great and offers group classes as well as individual training sessions!

  • I second Urban Pooch. Tilman (head trainer) also does private sessions and boot camps. He helped me so much with my fear aggressive and possessive dog. He only uses positive training methods.

Looking for Movers - insured/ licensed

We're looking for movers in a couple weeks, and were wondering what companies you'd recommend. I called 2 Guys & a truck, and their price quote was too high (for moving a very small apartment). What are your thoughts? Some of the places that have good reviews on Yelp don't have web sites or very findable sites, so it's hard to find out more about the company. I do plan to make calls, but would love to have neighbor input.

  • These guys were great: http://www.neuhausandsons.com/

Also, unlike others that I contacted, they had $1mil in insurance on our move.

  • We used OnTime Movers, who seemed to change their name to In and Out. First time, had a great experience. The second time took forever and it cost us a pretty penny. The third crew member was apparently new and being trained. They wrapped everything with tons of blankets and tape (things that did not need it), which they charged us for. Would not recommend them again.

Even at 6, I had to wait 5-10 minutes a few times. Not a huge deal, except I'm trying to get home in time to get the kids up and ready for school so every minute counts. The facilities are not spotless but decent enough that I shower there (with flipflops). It fits our needs fine.

Apartment burglary

My friend's second-floor apartment near Damen/Lawrence unfortunately was burglarized during the day yesterday. Her laptop and jewelry were stolen, as well as a backpack to haul the stuff in, apparently. Thankfully her cute little cats were unharmed. The doors were bolted when she came home and no windows were broken, so they're not sure yet how the thief got in but they think he must have had a key somehow, possibly from/as a previous tenant.

That uncomfortable theory might raise questions of security and safety for all us renters out there. It also underscores the importance of having renter's insurance.

I hope karma bites that guy right in the a**.

  • Love how everyone always wants to screw the landlord. It takes maybe 5 minutes to change a lock. If you ask your landlord to change your locks and he doesn't do it fast enough for you, do it yourself and give him a key. It's a better route than hiring attorneys and going down that road.

  • b in edgewater/andersonville interested resident and business owner

I wanted to address the issue of always making sure you have renters insurance. People tend to think the builidng they live in is totally secure and they " don't really own anything". Break ins are traumatic and the last thing you want to deal with is worrying about who pays for what. Get renters insurance. Barbara Janusek State Farm agency on Broadway and Bryn Mawr will get you coverage for less than $12.00 a month.

Advice on Electric

Just received a mailing from ComEd with option to switch to clean energy by signing the Clean Energy Option form. Has anyone switched? Do you think it's a good idea to sign up for electricity coming from renewable sources "like solar and wind." My initial thought is Yes! However, I made a switch with Peoples energy and tripled my bill. Any advice would be appreciated (regarding this). Thank you!

  • Damian Raszewski Ravenswood Photographer

I've seen this offer from another provider as well, seems that's it's becoming more common. I think it's a great idea, but currently, the companies do charge you more for this option. Some apparently, charge more than others.
It's not something I'm doing right now, but it's something to consider.

On a whim I just checked out the cost of Macbook Pro replacement displays and they are outrageously expensive ($300-800 just for hardware). $600 for repair is a good deal as far as repairs go, and you're not looking for recommendations for replacement, but fundamentally it is important to know that you can get a non-apple device for far less. The initial response to this generally is that you know the apple interface and like the quality of the construction. In my 12 years of computer repair, a majority of my customers have needed their Macs fixed (both in hardware replacement and software irritations). The hardware in Apple products is the generally the same as what you would find in other non-Apple products and while the engineering (generally) is better, the life span of hardware (storage life and (recently) CPU hard/firm architecture) is the limiting factor for the life of the product and that will be roughly the same as any other well reviewed product. The laptop market is very close, but non-Apple is generally at a fraction of the cost. As for the user interface, if you look at screen shots of the user interfaces of all mainstream OS and applications, you can see striking similarities as many user experience designers come to a common consensus on the ideal computer/human interface (with current common input devices). I can't give a wholehearted recommendation for change as I don't know how you use your machine, but for the vast majority of people a $250 (sale $200) Chromebook would be more than sufficient and cheap enough to assign less worry to its well-being. Considering the cost of the repair you could buy a Chromebook, an external display, and a high quality Android phone (off contract) for seamless life and/or business device harmony. As a disclaimer, I just want to say I might also be biased by my irritation at some of the licensing choices Apple has made in the last couple decades, some of which make Bill Gates seem like Linus Torvalds.

  • Al I. Not Defender of Cartoon Cows

It's not a hazmat anything. Damian's estimate is spot on, he's the guy you should call. (I don't know him; I just have my own background in system support and am a long time mac user.)

This is an ode to the early morning honker, the person giving a ride to an unseen passenger this very Saturday at 6:30am. I don't have kids and selfishly expect sleep, so you reminded me of that. You must have known I was in danger of sleeping in on this non-work day for me. Thank you, person who probably has a cell phone and could have called said passenger to notify them of arrival, for your brusque honk-honk-honk, a trinity of super quick cacophony, for not only making sure I saw the sunrise, but for testing to see if my sympathetic nervous system was working. FYI: It is. Thank you, because I frequently forget about it.

Thank you for honking when you could have easily double parked in a quiet & empty Lincoln Square to flag down/ ring the door of said passenger, because this way I get to imagine--for just a beautiful second--what it's like in New York or Hong Kong at noon on Tuesday.

Where, I must ask, did you learn such *spectacular* common courtesy? You must have taken a course from the early morning clamorous crew at Lake Shore Recycling Company. Those guys are common courtesy pros, frequently arriving at 5:45 or, on their more lazy days, 6:40 or so, and doing their job with *such* aplomb. Those guys know how to get it done, and by it, I mean making my Circadian rhythm like that of a mutable jazz solo. And I really like jazz, so why not syncopate my very being? Noise ordinance 11-4-2900, you are for obedient losers.

I nominate you, sir/ ma'am, for a Nobel Prize for common courtesy. Please feel free to enter your own nominees for this prize in the comments.

Signed,
Sleepy coffee shop patron

PS--If you've seen this scene from Louie, I feel like it captures the wonder of this moment I experienced this morning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0g3q_4kZnU

  • I do as Jeff does. No honk needed. The best was the other day, pulling out of my alley (which turns into another alley before getting to street) with a car right behind me. I inch slowly, stop and move on. She lays on her horn, despite the fact that she was only an inch behind me. Plus the fact that since I had turned, no car could be coming through from opp direction.

  • Frank H 71 Prodigal Northcenter native, back after 10yrs away

To reiterate what was said above, we all need to slow down, be patient, and get off our butts to ring doorbells. You are just shortening your lifespan if you are too stressed out and/or lazy to do the above. #endsoapbox

Yeah I heard that too, although it didn't seem like it hovered for very long. I turned on my police scanner and there wasn't anything on the local districts radio for the five minutes I listened, but due to the short time I listened maybe the quiet radio doesn't mean anything. I only noticed the 'chopper late in the game - maybe it was all over when by the time I tuned in.
