  • Rut row. I really like this place. :-(

  • BerkeleyGirl Winnemac Park

Juliet, my bet is there taking care of it all. I went by on Sunday, but there was a notice that they were closed for vacation, and would re-open Thursday.

  • The inspectors didn't say anything about their taps! They are having a welcome back party when they return, so I hear.

Car Always Parked Illegally Under Western Brown Line

There is a dark blue Chevy Volt with the license plate "BOXRBOY" that constantly illegally parks under the Western El tracks. There is even a "NO AUTOS" sign that the guy parks directly under. I see this car very frequently in this spot. Usually it is in the morning, but I also just saw it there tonight at around 6:30pm on 3/8. I happened to be walking by and saw three men get out of the car and walk to Garcia's restaurant as I was on my way to Fleet Feet. I am wondering who this person is, and why they have never been ticketed or towed. This is obviously not an emergency issue but is there somewhere to call to report this?

  • Yeah I saw him a couple of weeks ago under el @ Lincoln/Leland. New ride! Looked like an Escalade. CTA a good gig. Took a pic but can't figure out how to post on Everyblock.

  • I re-read the thread....man that was a great run. Kastigar, I guess lightning doesn't strike twice.

Reco needed: oral and maxillofacial surgeon

Hi Neighbors,

Does anyone know of an outstanding oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Chicago? Bonus points if they are excellent at tori removal.

Thanks!

  • My husband's had work done at Ora Dental Studio in the (west?) loop. They were really, really nice and did great work.

Dry cleaners

Howdy neighbors, recently moved into the neighborhood and, sorry to be cliche but, does anyone know a good dry cleaner? I didn't want to bother on EB, but we've read a bunch of mixed reviews online on different places, and we've tried two already which didn't perform well, i.e. one overpriced and one lost a shirt. Again, I apologize as I'm sure this is a thread that goes around every few months...

  • I'm interested in whether anyone has experience with any green cleaners? We had a environmentally friendly place when we lived in Roscoe Village but haven't been able to fine one near here. Thanks!

  • In these parts dry cleaners are like taco shops; everywhere and neither great nor overly good

Does your Condo association require Criminal Background Checks for renters?

Our Condo association is 10 years old and we haven't been following our rules and regulations as closely as we would like. We now want to start enforcing some of the more important rules.
Our current Rules & Regulations require that renters must be subjected to a criminal background check. I am inclined to enforce the rule but would like to see how other associations are handling this. If your building does have a criminal background check, can you please provide information about general cost and process you use?

Thanks

FYI-Our building has 25 units total.

  • No second chances for my rental units...

  • Our Board only requires a lease that meets certain conditions. It's up to the owner's discretion whether they also run a background check. The one unit that is currently rented did run background checks. But honestly, that doesn't do a ton to protect your association. People can still bring shady friends and family onto the property without your knowledge. So, it seems pointless as an association to require this.

Found dog near Sunnyside & Sacramento

The kind folks at Urban Pooch on Ravenswood have taken in a dog found near Sunnyside & Sacramento. Looks like a cattle dog mix, white with spots, dark ears. Check their fb page if you think you might know a dog like this. Let's get this pup back to his/her home!

Washtanaw and Lawrence ave

Does anyone know what, if anything, can be done about the crosswalk signs that had been placed, but are gone now, at the crosswalks at the intersection of Washtanaw and Lawrence ave? The spring signs have been run over so many times, they fell off and had been thrown away. Peoe drive so crazy up and down there and I've already seen one person crossing get hit by a car!

What amazes me is, have you ever been to Boston? Massachusetts drivers are the worst. They're maniacs. They speed, tailgate, weave, cut each other off, drive on the shoulder, run red lights, you name it. But for a pedestrian in a crosswalk, they will STOP ON A DIME. Here in Illinois? No regard for pedestrians at all, and contempt for the signs telling them to show some.

It's going to take a while for the culture here to change, but in the meantime, step out into that crosswalk, and make continuous, don't-mess-with-me eye contact with the driver of every oncoming vehicle. That's the only way.

  • No one stops for people in crosswalks without those signs. With them, it is not 100%, but it is improved. But, I do think those signs are confusing. Motorists often treat it as a stop sign, and it is not....unless pedestrians are present. Confusion about ones' duties at an inter...

Motorists often treat it as a stop sign, and it is not....unless pedestrians are present. Confusion about ones' duties at an inter section, cars and peds alike = crashes. Take it from me, liability claims adjuster. I would prefer the classic "Pedestrian Xing" sign that has flashing light/reflectors. I've seen these installed after fatal pedestrian accidents in other jurisdictions. They are more noticeable, less confusing and not liable to be run over.

Latitude changed hands

So, a coworker of mine mentioned to me that the Latitude bar/restaurant has recently changed ownership. I guess it's in the process of going through a rebranding and will be run entirely differently then in the past. My coworker knows the owners of the new establishment and has said that they have a much better food menu and will have a very good beer selection over time.

Has anyone been there in the past few weeks? I had only been there once before and service wasn't very good. I'd be excited to hear things are better with the new owners.

  • Great to know!! my friends and I haven't gone there in years because it just kept getting worse it seemed. Hopefully they will do some advertising or something, because I don't think the change is really known yet.

  • Great to know. We'll try it out.

Cars (and bikes) not stopping at stop signs in Ravenswood

I walk home from the Metra up to Foster Ave, usually on Wolcott. Seems like almost every day the cars in the area either do rolling stops, don't seem to stop at all, or take off when I'm halfway through the crosswalk. Also, bikes will blow through signs in this area as well, without even pausing - and the ones on sidewalks around blind corners have almost hit me on more than one occasion. Is there anything to be done?...

Also, bikes will blow through signs in this area as well, without even pausing - and the ones on sidewalks around blind corners have almost hit me on more than one occasion. Is there anything to be done? It doesn't seem like there is any police presence in the area, so it goes unnoticed. I don't like having to worry when I'm following the laws and being a safe pedestrian, that I'll be hit by a car or bike.

  • The new pedestrian "refuge" islands on Lawrence, complete with clear signage, are mainly ignored as well. Another great sting location if they want to hit a main road...

  • BerkeleyGirl Winnemac Park

Brian, if only there were a camera filming the northern crosswalk across Dearborn at Randolph, between McD's and Petterino's. It's insane!!! Honestly, in all my years, I've never seen anything like it. People of all ages/races/genders walking against red lights like they're not even there. Considering that I strongly believe that there are far more reckless drivers than pedestrians, I want to yell at them: You're not helping!!!

This thread is making me very frustrated that I can't make the CAPS meeting this Wednesday at Ravenswood Covenant Church.

The Last Pit Stop BBQ

Has anyone been yet? What were your experiences? Yelp seemed sort of mixed, would love to know if others have been there. I expected that they would have some bumps (everyone does when they first open), but that they should smooth out in time. I would love to see another restaurant in the neighborhood last!

  • My wife got the ribs which were fantastic and the coleslaw and sweet potato fries were great too. My brisket and mac and cheese much less so. We'd go back for the ribs though!

  • RoseRed 13 years in Chicago, 2 years in Lincoln Square

I went a couple of days after they opened and hope they will improve with time. The boyfriend and I got the pulled pork sandwiches. The pork was clumpy and extremely dry and the sauce tasted like it was out of a bottle. I had the baked beans and they absolutely came from a can. The boyfriend got the sweet potato fries and they were soggy.
The service was slow and confused.
We'll be giving it a few months and will try it again before completely giving up!

How's the new Mediterranean restaurant on Wolcott/Montrose?

Looks like it's grand opening was yesterday...no reviews yet.

  • So things that exist: sucuk trash kabob. Pity the poor advertising firm that has to make THAT sound appealing. :-)

  • Feihong EveryBlock developer, Lincoln Square dweller

Yeah, I feel like maybe they should spell it "sujuk" instead, which is closer to how the manager pronounced it (it's also how it's spelled on Wikipedia). If your eyesight isn't good, it looks almost looks like Jennifer ordered "suck trash kabob".

For Sale

Does anyone want to buy a couple of luxury indoor/outdoor candles in jasmine? Brand new, in the box, worth $300 each. 150/ a piece or 2 for $225?

  • lola1952 Gross Park Neighbor

Thanks for your concern Spam Alert ( and your vehement outrage). Altogether I did post an item for sale, as I have seen many other do on this forum, I did join EB to be more informed and aware of my community, as I am sure is true for yourself as well. Thank you for your vigilance.

  • SpamAlert Spamophobic

Yes, all those who post items and services for sale in violation of the rules often point to all the OTHERS who post items and services for sale in violation of the rules as emblematic of why they, too, should get the Special Snowflake Exemption. Lobby the owners of the site to change the rules if you're so inclined.

And I'm not outraged, just tired of sorting through ever more spam from Special Snowflakes.

* Am a great cook--healthy and tasty meals usually--but can also make the "comfort foods" we all love too.

* Some child care--as the eldest of 7, helped raise my younger siblings, plus recently I've taken care of my friends' kids when they've gone out for the evening & when they've gone to Europe for 2 weeks. Can provide references

* Have 20+ years in sales & marketing, so if you need some help with marketing your business--or just need someone to type your manuscript--happy to help.

* Some personal care assistance--worked in a hospital many years ago plus experience working with family members who have challenges (my 25 year old niece was born with a neural tube disorder and my aunt had ALS)--so could provide some assistance to you.

I'm a nonsmoker and I don't drink (food allergy). My cat is quiet and shy--and we are looking to move by August 1st. Look forward to meeting you!

Catherine, you still haven't turned on the personal message function. To turn it on, you need to go to the top right dropdown with your username on it, and select "Manage your account settings", then "Email", and finally check the box that reads "Allow logged-in EveryBlock users to email you via your public profile page".

    Feihong,

Thank you for alerting me! I thought I had enabled that but obviously hadn't. Appreciate all that you do to keep us functioning! :-)

Advice Needed: Amending Building Rules

Hi - I live in a multi-family building and am working on some rule changes to propose to the board. I have a few questions and am hoping to get thoughts from others:

1) Do you have restrictions on renters and if so what kind of wording do you use?

2) Do you have restrictions on personal items in common areas (ie using those areas as storage areas)? If so, what kind of wording do you use?

3) To make any new rules enforceable do you have to add them to the building declaration or can you just amend the association rules?

Thanks!

  • Fast Freddy Grace and Leavitt

Grab your condo declaration and read through it. Restrictions on personal items are most likely addressed in a basic way.

Changing or adding a rule for something like capping the number of rentals is trickier. You will need 75%-80% of the unit ownership to vote for the change. The percentage required is stipulated in the Condo Declaration. Be aware that once the association is more than 50% rentals and not owner occupied, it becomes much harder for a new buyer to obtain financing from a bank.
As a former President of a 10 unit condo building, I can tell you it is very difficult to get people to agree to much of anything. So stay on top of it as best you can.
    All the best.

  • Preeti--thanks for that link to the Chicago Cooperator. I didn't know it existed and I think it will be very useful to me and my co-op's board.

Yard sale/garage sale ideas needed!

So - I don't have a yard, I don't have a garage, and I don't think my landlord would approve of me buzzing people into the whole building (and giving them access) if I have it in my apt. We have a courtyard, and I think I would kill all the grass and flowers if I had my belongings and people trampling on the grass all day. There's a very small bit of grass in front of my bldg, but again, I think my landlord would not be happy with the damage to the grass which is very well maintained.

I really need some good suggestions! Is anyone in Lincoln Square/North Ctr. thinking of having a yard sale or garage sale soon? Would you have some extra space, and I could pay you, barter, or work something out with you? I have too much stuff to bring it to a flea market. I am a friendly, considerate person, and we'd be happy to work something out with a neighbors or group of neighbors. Really need to sell some things soon. Thank you for any suggestions you may have!!!
