He walks a way with what he can pull/carry, puts that stuff down, then goes back to retrieves the rest. Am curious about him. He used to wear a navy blue jean jacket in the summer and carried fewer belongings. With the colder weather coming on I wonder where he spends his nights etc.

Have a Seat

Saw some new Lawrence Avenue Streetscape furniture being installed this week.

  • Mike from The Square Lincoln Square Circa 2004

LOL @ the Soviet Era furniture.

I think they stick out like a sore thumb but whatever.

  • Saw them in person. In general I'm a big fan of the Lawrence streetscape project, especially the expanded sidewalks and pedestrian crossings, but these blue metal chairs look cheap, ugly and not really in keeping with the rest of the street's new features, like the traditional-looking black street lamps. Worse, they don't seem very functional. Other than lone walkers, will anyone walking in pairs or groups use one of these things while everyone else in their party just stands beside them? If they're meant to keep people from lying down, why not just install a bench with a divider in the middle?

The attack seemed pretty aggressive and I found out the victim had been knocked off his bike and then kicked and punched by the group. He was asked for money but this was after the hitting had started.

My partner scared the attackers off when he yelled at them to stop while I called the police. The attackers ran (of course) but the victim was not badly hurt.

Just a reminder to be aware of your surroundings and to speak up if you see something!

Elizabeth you and your partner handled it perfectly. The important thing is that the bad guys stopped the beating after they saw you, thus possibly preventing further injury to the victim. Did you happen to stick around and see if the CPD got descriptions from the victim and other witnesses?

  • can you describe the attackers?

Airplane noise (addressed?)

From the Trib: << Aldermen pressing for a firm commitment from the city to reduce noise from jets at O'Hare International Airport were told Friday by the outgoing aviation commissioner that "airplanes do create noise."

Regarding the record number of O'Hare noise complaints received from Chicago and suburban residents over the past year, Chicago Aviation Commissioner Rosemarie Andolino said: "I can't say that information (on noise complaints) is going to change the result of anything. I can't say to you that we are going to stop flying." >>

Rosemarie Andolino said: "I can't say that information (on noise complaints) is going to change the result of anything. I can't say to you that we are going to stop flying."

Let me guess: Rosemarie Andolino didn't sink her life savings in a home that was nowhere near O'Hare but is now a runway for 300 flights a day and night. If so, I'll bet she isn't an asthmatic, can afford running her air conditioning in lieu of opening her windows, and isn't raising children who cannot play outside lest they be showered with carcinogens.

The City completely changed the traffic pattern of O'Hare, taking property values from citizens who will never see a dime of airline profits, and then they proceeded to ramp up the number of flights, especially the extra-polluting cargo flights. No one in this City has ever experienced this kind of airplane traffic.

But what are you gonna do, Rosemarie Andolino? Rich people gotta get richer. And the poor and middle class who do not have the financial means to get out from under their airplanes are gonna have to foot the quality of life bill.

  • It's just going to get worse.

Was something filming on Lincoln last night?

I was hurrying home last night around nine and saw three identical moving trucks parked in front of the Grind near Wilson on Lincoln. Guys were just sitting in the backs of the open trucks waiting, like they often do when I see them film some of the Chicago-based tv shows currently running. I thought I saw something set up in Fork's backroom, but wasn't sure. The front room seemed to have normal business, and places usually close down completely when filming.

Anyone able to satisfy my curiosity? :)

Thanks!

  • Ann in Lakeview 30+ years in Lakeview

I heard rumors of "Chicago Fire" will be filming somewhere on the North Side soon.

  • Something was also being filmed at Le Cafe (under the L on Lincoln) last week.

Found: chubby orange housecat

This cat was hanging out on the sidewalk in front of 4447 N Wolcott. It was very friendly, well fed and didn't seem like an outside cat. I couldn't take it in so he's still outside. It went into the gated alley next to the building so I'm hoping it knows how to stay safe. It was cold but seemed ok for now.

  • This cat has been a fixture of the neighborhood for years. He/she is fearless and friendly. If this cat were on Fousquare, it would be the Mayor of Ravenswood.

I would like to encourage pet owners to use a large font size for the phone number. I could catch the dog's name and an address but the phone number was way too small to read from a distance or from any of the pictures I took.
Fortunately, I managed to chase the dog to his home according to a girl who recognized the dog though it was not the address on the tag. I am pretty confident the girl was telling the truth as the dog seemed very familiar and booked for the back door when she opened the gate.
Please make certain your pet's tags are updated and that the number can be read from outside of biting distance.

  • Candi I got to say that if I owned a dog the last thing I would want is my phone number visible to anyone.

  • Duncs - I am not saying visible to just anyone but if you can use a font where I can read the dogs name when I am a foot and a half a way with concentrated effort, you can use the same one for your phone number. It took me 20 minutes just to get the dog's name and the rough street address without me ever touching the dog. I don't call that visible to just anyone.

Need leaves in Ravenswood

Hi,
I'm looking to pickup leaves (from piles or in bags) that people are raking from their front yards and willing to give up. Using it for winter cover in a community garden.

So, have a front yard in and can help me out? Winnemac/Ainslie area from Clark to Damen would be amazing. Garden plots are at Hermitage and Ainslie.

Thanks for any help!

  • why not just go rake your own leaves from the parkways? i'm sure no one is going to care.

Our condo building just cleaned up our yard and (as of last night) there were 7 bags outside the dumpster. Northeast corner of Leland and Hermitage. Feel free to pick them up anytime.

CRAFTJAR in Ravenswood

Hello All,
I'd like to get some community feedback on a concept that I'm working on. I'd like to open a craft supply, kit and workshop boutique on the corner of Lawrence and Hermitage. It would also be a great place to shop really clever gifts and greeting cards. Take a peek at the (in progress) website at: www.craftjar-Chicago.com and let me know your thoughts? Is it a great idea? Waste of space?
Thanks!

Assigning risk scores to apps may slow down unwarranted access to personal information

October 28, 2014

What information is beaming from your mobile phone over various computer networks this very second without you being aware of it?

Experts say your contact lists, email messages, surfed webpages, browsing histories, usage patterns, online purchase records and even password protected accounts may all be sharing data with intrusive and sometimes malicious applications, and you may have given permission.

"Smartphones and tablets used by today's consumers include many kinds of sensitive information," says Ninghui Li, a professor of Computer Science at Purdue University in Indiana.

The apps downloaded to them can potentially track a user's locations, monitor his or her phone calls and even monitor the messages a user sends and receives--including authentication messages used by online banking and other sites, he says, explaining why unsecured digital data are such a big issue.

Li, along with Robert Proctor and Luo Si, also professors at Purdue, lead a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded project "User-Centric Risk Communication and Control on Mobile Devices," that investigates computer security. The work pays special attention to user control of security features in mobile systems.

Li, Proctor and Si believe they may have a simple solution for users, who unknowingly allow voluntary access to their personal data.

Crime in the hood?

I have lived in the lakeview/northcenter area for 50 years.
I think the lakeview, north center, Lincoln square, and ravenswood
areas are the safest streets in the city.
one can walk without threat, children can play safely outdoors, and the

what a wonderful area to live.
Anyone living in these areas should enjoy it.
One more thing. Never move. you will regret it.

As far as serious crime, yes, there's very little. At least from what I read, your safest bet is too stay off your phone while walking down the street, especially if you're a woman. Nearly all the muggings/gun-related crime I hear about involves a woman who was walking down the street while talking on her phone.

Personally, I think people wouldn't be as concerned if there were a greater police presence in the neighborhood. Too many cops have been sent to truly crime-ridden neighborhoods, and the gangbangers know it.

However, both liquor licenses list the name of the business as "Mangal", even though the first Tolgano liquor license was granted way back in 2010! I'm pretty sure that's got to be a typo.

I have a big, strong dog. He has fear aggression. He wears a muzzle outside and gets treats for being calm. We are working with a behaviorist. I am working very hard to train him out of his fears and bad habits.

Please, If you see us on the street, don't be fooled by how closely he pays attention to me (I've got the treats!) or how calm he seems. If I ask you not to approach with your dog or young child, please respect my words. It doesn't make a difference if your child loves dogs or if your dog is a sweet, docile snuggle bug.

Yes, he's muzzled up and can't hurt you, but you hurt him when you don't listen to me. He doesn't need anymore setbacks from well-meaning people. I understand you think he is sweet/handsome and you want to pet him. He doesn't. He thinks you're trying to hurt him - or me.

I'm not asking you to be afraid or cross the street if you see us. Passing us on the sidewalk is no longer an issue. If he gets riled up by your dog, I will cross the street. Don't worry. I want us all to be safe and enjoy a pleasant walk.

I expect that some people will flame this post and tell me to "put him down." I don't have to defend myself to you and I won't. I am not putting people in danger. I'm simply asking you not to try to introduce your dog to mine, or encourage your child to try to pet him.

  • We have dog that wears a yellow ribbon because she is terrified of strangers. Never approach a dog unless you have the owners permission.

  • MandaLeigh Here I Is.

I'll never understand why some people think it's perfectly ok to walk up to a stranger's dog (or allow their child to do so) and try to pet or interact with them. Seems like absolute common sense, but I guess not. Boundaries, people.

Housekeeper Cost?

How much is a fair amount to pay for a 2 story home (1,800 sq ft, 2 full, 1 half bath, 3 small bedrooms, all wood floors, no carpeting) I have all my own supplies but I'm paying $100 for 3 people who are here for less than an hour. My house is very minimalist -- no clutter at all so I just need straight up bathroom scrubbing, floor sweeping, mopping.) I see several posts recommending cleaners, but no specific fees.

  • Aron Long tlme Lincoln sq home owner

Jaci ,This is the occupation the women who clean houses choose .I pay $30 an hour to my cleaner which is more than many college grads earn . She don't consider the work she does as someone's "dirty work " she is well treated and for the most part choose her own hours .

  • smartypants LifeLongCityGirl

I agree. Thank you all. I am going to stick with my people but type up a specific list of what I need done. I just think they might be spending more time on things I don't care so much about (dusting every dish in my china cabinet) and not enough on the things I do care more about (kids fingerprints all over the walls :-) And @Aron, it is nice when someone feels well paid and doesn't resent their work. Good point.
