Absurd and Humiliating Dress Code Policy at Chappell Elementary School

If you are considering sending your child to Chappell Elementary please be aware that the Principal has a ZERO Tolerance Policy for not wearing a clean white shirt. If you are considering sending your child to Chappell Elementary please be aware that the Principal has a ZERO Tolerance Policy for not wearing a clean white shirt. Even if you have a note saying your washing machine is out of order and you send your child with a light gray or navy shirt - your child will be forced to change into a dirty, smelly shirt with writing in huge letters front and back - "LOANER". Even if your clothes are totally appropriate and you are in 1st grade. When I went to an LSC meeting to just bring this up - the Principal called 911 on me. That started to give me concerns and my suspicions were confirmed in May. My son is gone from the school so we can now speak up without fear of further retaliation. I am happy to meet with anyone personally to show all of the evidence I have. Please do not send your child to this school until the Principal is replaced. He is a threat to children and he has been manipulating the LSC. It is very difficult to even find out when the next LSC meeting is and how to contact anyone on the LSC or even get the minutes of the meetings. The Alderman and School Board have been contacted but due to the privacy of the children involved we all do not want this to have to go to court. Please help this school and the families that are really suffering from the fallout of his actions.

The best way to voice your concern is through Alderman O'Connor at ward40@cityofchicago.org. He is aware of the situation but says the more parents that can email and stand up against this absurd policy the easier it will be to remove him. There is no way to contact LSC members via school website or even find out dates of the meetings which are always during the day. Compare transparency of Waters Elementary to Chappell Elementary Website so you can see how hard he makes it for parents to complain about this.

"I would never send my kid to an elementary school with a ridiculous dress code like that. Never even heard of such a thing at a CPS school."

Bill, it must be a long time since you've set foot in a CPS school. Many CPS schools -- probably a majority of them, at this point -- now have "uniform" codes. The typical uniform is a plain white shirt and navy blue pants or skirt.

Not to put too fine a point on it, these uniforms are a class marker. They're required in schools attended by poor, working-class and lower-middle-class children. They're required in schools that are majority African-American and Latino. They're not required in schools that are mostly attended by bourgeois European-American kids. Take a look at this page of photos from the Chicago Tribune (http://galleries.apps.chicagotribune.com/chi-120919-cps-students-back-to-school-pictures). Look at how the South Loop kids are dressed. Now look at how the Bell kids are dressed.

A uniform policy is an indication that the school administration is anxious about its ability to control what goes on within its walls and believes that it must exercise control in whatever spheres it can. Being able to control what students wear gives them the illusory sense that it can control, say, whether they get into fights or mark up the bathrooms with graffiti. It's a cheap and ineffective substitute for having policies that respect the students' rights and dignity and deal with discipline in a constructive, preventive way rather than a reactive, punitive way.

It's also stigmatizing. Uniform proponents argue that uniform policies reduce the attention kids give to who's wearing what and thereby protect kids from being picked on based on what they wear. But all these policies do is shift the stigma from individual students to the student body as a whole. One look is all it takes to know whether a school has confidence in itself and its community or whether it sees its students as a problem to be managed.

This post caught my attention because my kids went to Chappel although many many years ago. Here are my concerns: Sherri, with all due respect, it truly seems you need to get a handle on your emotions about what may or may not be a legitimate issue with the school, their policies, and/or the principal. I also live very near the school so you are obviously a neighbor of mine so I care either way.
Couple things: you are making some very serious accusations against the principal (like the one about making a child disrobe in his office). I suppose either way they could be considered slander and you could find yourself in legal trouble. If you are the same Sherri B of the boutique, I would feel terrible that your airing your grievances so publicly could seriously hurt your business. I am no wilting flower, in fact when my kids when to the school back in the day, I had an issue but I went to the school board, through arbitration, and everything worked out for all involved.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, there is no way to delete posts on Everyblock, even if you make your profile inactive.

Catalytic converter thief caught in the act

The man came out from under the car and got into a black SUV on the passenger side and drove away.
My father could not provide a description of the man other than he was male, light complexion and was wearing dark clothing.
He described the SUV as a later model Explorer or Toyota Highlander with silver trim and bumpers, along with a spare on the back.
Keep an eye out.

  • Hi All, I had the catalytic converter stolen from my CRV on Francisco and Cullom. I got it replaced and then got a device called the cat clamp online. The Honda dealer installed it for me for $140.00. It was a couple months ago - so far so good.

Besides, in places like Colorado where pot is now legal, illegal sales are still continuing since legal pot is taxed and much more expensive than from the streets. If Chicago made marijuana totally legal, it would benefit so much from the tax. One could hope it could provide for more police as well.

Sorry, that was off topic. But I don't know that the theft of the converters are gang related or not. Not all thefts are gang related.

What I am wondering is if certain types of cars are being targeted for catalytic converter theft, or is it any make of car?

Is orange and white cat found in Lincoln Square yours?

I apologize for linking to a Facebook post (wish I had a still photo I could share), but there is an urgent need to find the owner of a cat who is close to being euthanized at Animal Care and Control. He was found near Lawrence, Western, and Lincoln. Please take a look and see if you recognize him or know of someone who is missing a similar-looking cat. Thanks!

Small Condo Building Management Company Recommendations?

This group has steered me right before, so looking for more wisdom! Seeking a Condo/Property Management company that handles smaller buildings (6-12 units). Looking for strong knowledge of condo laws/governance, financial aspects/budgeting, solid vendors/bidding process, and most of all good communication with the owners & board. If you live in a condo building where there's a good management company, would appreciate the recommendation -- thanks for your help!

My wife and I found a Nikon 3100 in a black camera bag (with additional contents) last Friday around Ravenswood and Foster intersection. Please reach out to me if you believe it's yours.

P.S. I'm going to ask several questions about the contents and photographs as Craigslist has only produced scam artists to date. I won't let go of the property easily.

Childcare in Ravenswood/Lincoln Square

Hello!
I recently moved back to the area and I'm desperately searching for full time child care for my three year old twins. I am open to all care options, but price point (twins!), is a concern. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

  • Most daycares give a small discount for a second kid. We are at Ladybug and Friends and love it. I think there is supposed to be a good one in Swedish that is reasonable but I think the wait list is long. You could also post this to any of the local mom groups on Facebook to get other suggestions. Good luck!

  • We send our kids to Rainforest 2. It's not in the immediate area, but we love it. So unique and creative. Big open spaces, art shows, performances, wonderful caring teachers and healthy organic food.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT AN ACTUAL PICTURE OF THE DOG BUT A PRETTY CLOSE MATCH. His ears and tail are a little longer.

Hi neighbors,

Sorry I have posted a couple of over times but no luck yet. There is a little tan/light brown male terrier (about 10 pds or so) who has been hanging out in the alley at 2600 W. Catalpa. He showed up there on Thursday night, is scared, extremely skittish and won't stay still long enough for me to get a picture of him to post. So far he looks to be in good shape but I'm worried he is going to get hit by a car or attacked by one of the many wild critters in the area.
He does have a collar, I am not sure about tags because he won't let anyone get close to him. I've been checking IL Lost Dog and craigslist, also asking around the neighborhood but nothing yet. He also won't come near anyone, with or without a dog. I've tried both approaches and I've also tried to lure him with treats like hot dogs.
I've been leaving out food and water for him and saw him this morning so at least I know he is getting the food. If you could spread the word or ask around, I would appreciate it. I only hope he wasn't abandoned. :(

  • Wait! What? There are two terriers out there running around? I would be willing to help find the little guy. Man,. he's probably hungry and really scared.

  • Sounds like you are doing a good job of winning his trust, Budlong Woods neighbor. I was pretty worried when I saw kids chasing him (or what I think was him) in a group. Thanks for keeping us posted.

Alternatives to AT&T Mobile?

After giving up way too much of my life continually trying to figure out why my AT&T mobile phone bill is so high, I am ready to make a change. Every time I try to reduce my bill, it ends up costing me more. (Riddle me this: Why is 2GB of data is $25/month, but 1GB is $40/month? And that is BEFORE any data limits are exceeded.)

Anyway, any recommendations on a reasonable family plan with good service? I have an iPhone and my daughter has a simple phone with just talk and text. I foresee adding my son at some point.

Thanks in advance for your mobile plan wisdom, neighbors!

Harassment at Damen and Lawrence.

Walking to the train going South on Damen on the East side if the street. Right after I passed through the crosswalk, a man at the bus stop yelled, "I HATE YOU!!!" Then he lunged at me and screamed, "I HATE YOUR UGLY QUEER A$S!!!"

I yelled that I'm calling the cops and he ran across Damen to get on the Lawrence bus going east.

A woman in her car rolled down her window and asked if I was ok. I continued to walk to the train.

He has blondish reddish hair, fair skin, and a mouth full of rotting teeth. Was about 6 feet tall.

If I had mace he would have really gotten it.

Beware. It was terrifying.

More than anything, I was hoping someone might want them. (Tire swing? Or I saw a goofy but cool table made from a tire on the DIY Network this week.)

How much to pay part-time childcare providers?

As future tip, if you are going to encourage people to picnic and it's a huge gravel parking lot either have picnic tables besides where art projects are going on or volunteers themselves are sitting at and eating or tell people to bring their own chairs, tables, or blankets. Also, invite some food trucks or engage the neighboring business so people can have food handy.

Blanket and towel collection

If you or someone you know has some old linens to unload, there is a collection box at Canine Social Club, 5508 N. Western. They're for the dogs at Chicago Animal Care & Control, who recently lost a huge load of blankets when the washing machine broke. Items can be dropped off until 8/25.

Hi again! A huge THANK YOU to those who have donated! The dogs (and volunteers who love them) have been so touched the the generosity of our neighborhood, as well as the kindness and support of Canine Social Club staff. The dogs really hope they can be adopted by people as awesome as those who donated, and really, really hope to one day get to play and make friends at Canine Social Club.

The collection will be going on until 8/25, if you still have items you'd like to drop off. Thanks again!

  • Keep in mind the drop box is INSIDE. I came by last Sunday and ended up leaving a bag of towels outside since they were closed.

Looking to borrow a trap to catch stray do

Hi neighbors. The little brown terrier is still on the loose and I haven't had any luck finding any notices matching his description for lost dogs. Does anyone know of any rescues that will loan out traps for me to catch him? I don't want him to end up at ACC unless absolutely necessary and I want to get him off the street.

Blankets

Anyone remember which dog/cat shelter on Western recently asked for blanket donations for the dogs? I know any shelter will happily take them but this shelter reached out. Thank you!

Book donations

Cleaned out the book shelves this weekend and have three large boxes of good condition adult and middle school books to get rid of -- anyone have a not-complicated suggestion for donating them somewhere in the area?

terrible landlord

The new owners of my building are rehabbing units and caused a gas leak, resulting in my cooking gas being shut off. They've known for 12 days now. They are now ignoring my emails and voice mails and I can't get a person on the phone. I corresponded with a tenants' rights group but they said honestly there's not much I can do, since I'll be moving out in 6 weeks. In the meantime, I can't cook! It's ridiculous! Has anyone successfully withheld rent for this type of problem? Small claims court? What are good places to register complaints against these people (besides Yelp)?

  • Neighborly1~ Values community.

I wish we could know the mgmt company name or location of apt so we can all avoid that landlord! Is that possible?

  • Look on the Internet for the Tenants Rights Organization that is downtown that helps all renters in Chicago.
