Any thoughts about Angie's List?

I think Angie's List is a great service, but it bothers me that you have to pay $35 a month to keep current, when you may only need a recommendation two or three times a year. I've opted out and am now going to use my neighbors here on EveryBlock for recs.

  • I've been on Angie's list 6+ years.

It was great early on. It is generally worth the money. I have done very well over the years with contractors rated well on AL. I have easily dropped contractors who had bad reviews on AL. This is when it works.

    I've been on Angie's list 6+ years.

It was great early on. It is generally worth the money. I have done very well over the years with contractors rated well on AL. I have easily dropped contractors who had bad reviews on AL. This is when it works.

That said, since the company went public the operation has gone south. It has steadily declined. I still maintain my membership but the website has became a mess, they harass businesses for $ to place ads, and if you don't know how to manage the search engine they will put in front of you the companies who are paying and offering "coupons" rather than those with the best rating.

I will note the prices are going steadily down for Angie's list but if you have been with them for a long time they have now tried to drive my membership up to $80 a year while luring new users at stuff more like ~$30. This won't fly either.

Use with care, it will help, it is not a silver bullet and check every contractor and their references for every project.

I can also point out that I've had an AL highly rated contractor offer me a discount to give them a review because they know it generates a great amount of business for them. This worries me a lot. I declined the discout and reviewed the contractor appropriately. I found him on AL and he kicked butt at what he did so he got a good review. My realtor pestered me to give him and AL review. I don't see this as a good trend. Unfortunately, I feel AL long term outlook is not good as it has been tainted by the need to generate profits rather than building a great business helping people find contractors which it was in the early days.

In conclusion, most AL customers are good customer's for contactors. Most highly rated AL contractors are good contracters for customers. Most is the key word. YMMV.

  • I'll add Consumer Reports info which is interesting: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/2013/09/online-ratings-services/index.htm

Bent Ring

Does anyone know a jeweler in the area that could unbend one of my rings for a reasonable cost?
I wear the ring on my dominant hand and never really take it off so over the years it's become lopsided. I don't want to try any of the online fixes for fear of cracking it.
Thanks!

Anyone know what's going on with Troquet? It's been "closed for maintenance" for the past few days. Seems ominous . . .

  • Consistently incompetent service and the food is hit or miss. It's hard to believe that the quality of a ham sandwich can vary so much from visit to visit, but yeah, it does. I mean, it's a fancy Frenchified ham sandwich, but still, how can they F this up about 40% of the time? Good location, hope they either figure themselves out or fold quick and make room for someone that can cut the mustard.

USPS Packages stolen

This afternoon we had 2 packages stolen; the contents were removed and the boxes dumped in the trash.

Our place is on Western AVE near Winnemac. Not exactly low traffic area.

Argh!!

  • We've had UPS and USPS packages stolen out of the vestibule. For USPS, we have a PO Box in another zipcode because it is much closer to us. Unfortunately it is in nice neighborhoods where thieves "go shopping." We had a neighbor call when they found empty boxes belonging to many people on our street, all dumped in a basement area that was accessible.

  • We have all packages delivered to us at work unless we know we can plan to be home to receive them.

Recommended Condo Building Information Sharing Website

Hi All! My condo board association is looking for a new website service to share information between the residents in our 24 unit building in Lincoln Square. The website will need to be able to store documents (meeting minutes, assessment log), have a discussion forum, and be able to email out to the residents when new things have been added to the site. Can anyone recommend an easy to use, low-cost option? Thanks!

I second Basecamp (which will cost $20/month), but it all depends on your needs. Basecamp is an excellent option if you also need to create to-do lists and want a system that notifies users when something is due or coming up. And it's rather intuitive as far as project management systems go. But if your focus is mainly on communication with some document storage, then Google is likely the better option.

A good rule of thumb regarding tools like these is to use the one most members are comfortable/familiar with -- especially if you need buy-in and participation from all. If, however, project management is more a priority, and a few people will be doing most of the heavy lifting, then something more robust like Basecamp will keep you all, quite literally, on the same page.

Happy to answer questions about both if you have any!

Look into using Buildium. We use the software on a larger scale, though, I have seen smaller self-managed Associations be very successful with it. They offer a free trial as well.

Lakeshore garbage pickup at 5:20am

Has anyone else noticed that Lakeshore is picking up garbage before 7:00 and not by just a few minutes. I have called 311 to report them on several occasions. I have tried to talk to the driver but that just turned into him banging the cans louder. We have called the company several times. The first time we received a phone call and results for a couple months. Now they do not return our calls.

The only way they will stop is if enough people complain to 311 and they keep getting fined. Please call 311 if you hear them out before 7:00.

  • Haven't experienced it lately, but in the past, whenever we've been jarred from a deep sleep in the predawn hours by the thunderous roar of an upended dumpster, the culprit has always, always, always been a Lakeshore driver … Wish I knew the driver's work schedule and home address so I could return the favor on his days off.

Getting a tree out of the parkway

There is a huge, monstrosity of an evergreen tree in front of my house in the parkway that I'm dying to get rid of. It was planted by the previous owners and although I love trees, I really detest this one. I've heard the city will hardly ever grant a permit to remove a tree in the parkway, though another person told me they aren't so precious about evergreens, which they don't themselves plant. Does anyone know the deal on this? I'm happy to plant another tree, just not this type.

  • The city was happy to cut down a huge beautiful tree in front of my house because of a blight and said they would plant another the following year. I was then told by the alderman's office that the ash tree problem has used up the funds for new plantings. I intend to buy a tree and plant it myself. However, I am not sure they will cut down a tree because it is ugly.

If you've the cash, a city worker's got the axe.

I'm not in Lincoln Square or Ravenswood but next door in Andersonville and I can tell you that here and in many places in the city the Sprint reception is abysmal. At a friend's house at Ashland and Catalpa I get no reception indoors at all. Nada. Out on the sidewalk in front of their building things seem fine but inside it's hopeless. In my own apartment at Argyle and Clark, I get from a half a bar to a bar and a half of reception, tops--and that's since the upgrade. Many mornings it is a challenge just tracking the bus due to network errors. Again, it is better outdoors. And, there are a number of places down in the Loop where I get no reception at all indoors. I don't use my phone as much as many people do and the service I get with Virgin is cheap, so I tolerate it but it is frustrating. I should have known better than to sign up for it, though, when they had to walk my phone over to the window at the now-defunct Virgin Store on Clark just to get a signal...(in fairness, that was before the "upgrade" but I can't help thinking the rotten reception in the store's showroom had something to do with the fact that they are no longer there.)

  • I can't speak for Sprint, but I will say that ATT reception is terrible in this area. We currently use T-Mobile and the service is good in Chicago (for us), but terrible everywhere else.

I'm pretty sure that Verizon is the way to go and when we decide to upgrade our phones we'll be going with them just for better coverage while traveling. My husband uses a Verizon 4G hotspot thingamabob to connect to work remotely and we get reception pretty much everywhere with that thing.

Condo Management company alternatives?

Hi everyone,

We have 14 units in our Lincoln Square area building and want to see if there are better companies out there. Can anyone recommend their management company? Ours was good in the past but they have lately done a shoddy job of coordinating fixing things, being responsive, emailing/calling us back and essentially not living up to expectations so we want to see what's out there.

I arrived to volunteer and the team lead, volunteer coordinator, shared with the other girls and I that we were to place our belongings we wished to not have sitting out in this "locked file cabinet."

Please be advised that the "locked file cabinet" was a sh*tty cabinet that someone could easily bust into. But, no need as the key to said sh*tty file cabinet was placed on a folding table in the middle of the check in area often left unattended to.

My gut told me to take my purse and keep it with me but I didn't want to appear suspect to the individuals we were helping that evening.

So, silly me, I left it. Only to come back to the "locked file cabinet" about two hours later and bam, its gone.

I'm so thankful I had friends with me to help figure out what to do as the church staff were not very helpful in assisting a quick search of the church property and staff.

I want my loss be a lesson to all doing good out there, keep doing good things for others but leave all personal items at home as many of these locations do not provide adequate storage and if your gut is telling you something, trust it. I'd have my purse and all its fabulous contents today if I would have trusted my gut.

  • Oh Charles & Penny, that is just terrible! I am so sorry you are experiencing the same loss as I am. I only wish that people volunteering were exempt from this type of crime. I hope the person who took your reader enjoyed books as much as you, I am...

Looking for a vet

Hi everyone. I'm moving into the City from down state. I'm bringing my cat with me who is in stage 4 renal failure, so I need a vet. I'm stocked up on her medical supplies for a while but I'll still need a vet to take her to.

Do anyone have any suggestions for a good, not too expensive vet in the area?

  • My vote is for Dr. Murphy and Dr. Scott at West Wrigley Animal Hospital on Ashland (south of Addison, north of Roscoe). They took great care of my 10 year old cat when she was hospitalized for kidney disease and were conscious of keeping costs but still giving her the care she needed.

  • I like Dr Jewell, my cats see him and not one of his partners. He and his staff treated us with a lot of compassion when one of my cats died and later when my other cat was euthanized. I switched from the Cat Hospital because I did not like seeing different vets all the time, (my favorite one left).

Jim,

Just around the block from the new Mariano' there is a public disgrace. Besides the hundreds of residents using it, some customers and a lot of Mariano's employees are having to negotiate it too -- and somebody is going to get hurt.

The sidewalk in front of my neighbor building, at 4817 North Wolcott, managed by ICM Properties, 773-549-5443 has been a terrible hazard and now, ever since this last winter, it is a menace to public safety. I've tripped over this broken, uneven and potholed walkway for over 10 years and I'm fed up.

Please see the attached photos documenting this disgrace, and the building management.

I'm requesting that the Alderman do whatever possible to either force the management to repair this sidewalk in front of their building, or better yet find some emergency money and have the Ward replace it entirely.

Thank you ...

  • I think you meant Bill no works at the Alderman's office, Jim still does - he's the chief of staff - http://chicago47.org/staff/

  • Delia Kropp Loving Ravenswood since 1990

As this post's creator, I'd like to express my thanks to the Alderman's office for getting the deteriorated stretch of sidewalk not merely repaired but entirely replaced. The work began 3 days after I emailed Mr. Poole, who acknowledged the urgency of the situation, and was completed within 24 hours. By any standards this response was exceptionally quick. Well done.
Many thanks as well to my neighbors here on Everyblock.com who voiced their support. Hopefully we've saved some trips & spills.

Philadelphian Romanian Church Crazy Drivers

Twice this am I was almost hit by the cars speeding through stop signs to drop off people at church! Then to be told f*ck off by the driver when I told them to stop.

What more can be done! I documented the two cars that almost hit me as well.

Call if you'd like but I'm telling you, the police have looked me in the eye and said "I'm not ticketing a church, I don't want to go to hell..."

Believe me, the traffic here is a million times better than it was 8-10 years ago. They used to literally park in the intersection for hours. At least now they park in spaces and the noise level is down. I had thought maybe they suddenly had a change of heart since it's been so much better lately.

Most of the tight parking issues that force you to park on Ravenswood are not that much better when church isn't in session these days. The fact is that we have a lot of condos/multi-unit buildings and far more people/cars than there are spaces. We've politely asked that they respect the neighbors. (we met with the pastor in person, inside the church, with the alderman's office representative)

They don't care about the neighbors. Just be careful when you are crossing the street. Trying to do more will just leave you frustrated.

  • I used to live right across the street from this church. When I first moved in it was something different, I think maybe an Episcopal Church, and I hardly noticed them. As soon as it became the Philadelphia Romanian Church parking in the neighborhood became impossible on Sundays and some evenings and the street was much more crowded. They are one of the reasons I moved.

Street Sweeping

Thank goodness that the street sweeping schedule is beginning again. After the long winter and with spring just beginning, it's important to move your car so the sweepers can remove all the gunk and debris that has accumulated in the streets. It's unsightly and could clog sewer drains. Yes, it's inconvenient to find a parking spot during sweeping times, but important nonetheless -- and easy to avoid a $60 ticket!

Fun segment by Curious City about an otherwise mundane topic: http://www.wbez.org/series/curious-city/street-sweeping-essential-service-or-revenue-scam-109221

  • Kristine Cloud 30 year resident of North Center

Kudos to Shelley's husband for cleaning the sewer grates! It helps if everyone pitches in on tasks like this. It drives me insane that the leaves don't seem to fall until the beginning of December, yet the last street sweeping is usually in October or early November. The city would save itself a lot of work in the spring if it had another sweeping in December (weather permitting). Oh well...

I love trees as much as anyone but planting a tree in the outfield of a baseball diamond at Welles Park seems like an odd choice. I never have been able to figure how decisions are made at the Park District.

Tree reassignment sounds like a blatant violation of plant rights!

I hate to be a total cynic, but the kids will probably have a way of dealing with that wee tree. A few years ago, I saw some similarly-sized trees planted in the small park at Lawrence and Washtenaw right where the children regularly played soccer. Those trees got damaged in a hurry.

Shooting @ Rockwell and Foster

All I know is that the hoodlum/gangbanger element is on the rise in the neighborhood. There was a drug related shooting in the McDonald's parking lot in LS a couple of months ago. My friend and I walked out of Lincoln Square lanes with her two young children right after it happened after having an early dinner there. When I read the crime blotter, there are always muggings and armed robberies on Lincoln over by the "no tell" motels - right down the street from the police station. I live close the the police station and the last time I called 911 because of a domestic disturbance that I thought was going to get really ugly, the response time was over 20 minutes even through the station was less than a block away. A couple of years ago, a kid was killed when his head was bashed in by five thugs RIGHT NEXT to the police station. The police won't even show up now for burglaries. We are losing the battle against the criminals and they know it. Even when they are caught on camera, unless the offense involves some kind of violence or threat, the police do very little because they have bigger priorities.
I was always kind of on the fence about gun control but I am now thinking about getting a gun for my home. The police are overworked and as a single person living alone, I have to think about how to best protect myself since I know I can't rely on the police to deter the criminals and catch them. That's why these guys have no problem walking up to someone in broad daylight and shooting them or driving by a busy public park filled with kids playing and spraying the place with bullets. Even if they do get caught, the current sentencing structure is ineffective. Those guys get a slap on the wrist and are released right back into the neighborhood.

A couple of things to keep in mind is that although one lives near a police station doesn't insure a quick police response. The squad cars aren't dispatched from the station. The cars are already on the street, and could be anywhere when they receive the radio assignment, and you're right the CPD is shorthanded. A class of 84 graduated today, but when you consider that there are 22 districts, and three watches, that comes out to approximately one more officer per tour of duty. Not much of a difference. Secondly, people who commit crimes, expect to get away with them. Many crimes, especially the violent ones, are crimes of opportunity, or impulse. such as road rage. That's why security videos, or the proximity of a police station doesn't mean that much.

Need plumbing help

I have a long history of do-it-yourself plumbing projects that have ended in disaster! The harsh winter has left a leaking outside faucet. A "simple" repair I am sure I could make far more complicated. The last time I hired a Plumber I used an Angie's list referral and got one for a reasonable hourly rate but they took far too long to complete the project, left to shop for parts etc. I ended up with a larger bill than the estimate. Does anyone have a recommendation for a plumber or handyman for our Lincoln Square Neighborhood?

Hi there. I have a few pieces of furniture to get rid of pronto - seriously, if you can come pick them up, you can have them for FREE. That's right, FREE. Good condition sofas - we just need to make room for a baby, so goodbye spare room, hello nursery. Non-smoking, but cat home. Must pick up.

The first is a black, IKEA ektorp sofabed - it's a few years old, but in really good shape - we've used in a spare room for the occasional out-of-towners. IKEA no longer carries the sofa, but I've found replacement covers online elsewhere, if black isn't your thing. The cover is easily removed to be washed. There are some minor nicks where the cat got a hold of it, along the back. This guy is heavy. And we can throw is the squishy, foam mattress topper we use with it to make it more comfortable.

The second is a set of dark brown, corduroy-ish apartment sized sofa/loveseat and oversized arm chair. Two years old - the sofa is in good shape - some minor wear, we would keep, but we came into a different living room set. The chair, on the other hand, has a rip along the back where the pillow meets the frame - I believe it's easily repaired - I'm just lazy - so we've just thrown a blanket over it. And woah - get this, it comes with THREE pillows.

I can't get both pictures to load, so let me know if I can send one to you or if you have other questions.

  • Cat

Hi Elizabeth! I'm interested in seeing pics of the corduroy sofa, loveseat and chair. Could you send them to me via email? cat02134 at gmail dot com. Thanks!

  • Hi Cat, thanks for your interest, however it's all been picked up already! I just can't figure out how to delete posts on everyblock :/
