It should be allowed IMH as long as it's a person and not a huge realtor/rental agency. There are often posts for people looking exactly for this on EB (as well as good places to eat, drink, do on weekends, etc.). As a landlord myself I often think about posting here (my tenants are thankfully long term so I haven't yet had the need). Perhaps this should be something that could be allowed the future.

  • IF EB is not removing the post then it is ok..........its is the housing section after all. Does it matter who post? This is site owned my a MAJOR corporation all we provide for free is data. Don't listen to these "hall monitors" on EB with nothing to do.

Logan Square Eat

Just moved to Logan Square and have heard repeatedly that this area has the vest food in the city! I'm excited!! What are some faves we should know about?? Thanks!!

  • I love Analogue - great food and drinks (Tuesday night fried chicken), Brown Sack - sandwiches, and Rocking Horse for good food in a bar atmosphere. I can go on, but I am sure others will have great options, too. Welcome to Logan!

  • Brown Sack (Central Park and Belden) has a Nutella shake need I say more?!

Need to find a new home for my 2 cats

Hello,
So I need to find a new, loving home for my 2 cats. I have a newborn, a 3 yr old & just went back to work, keeping up with my fur babies is getting to be too much for me.

Monkey is a black, long haired boy. He's a sweetheart, loves to be loved. He is very lazy (but what cat isnt) and extremely friendly.
Buttons is a black/white short hair girl. She's also friendly and like to play.

I adopted them as kittens 5 yrs ago and would like to keep them together if possible.

Please email me if you're interested.

thanks

Whether you agree or not it's safe to say it is the responsible thing to do. The comments and the speculations on her parenting skills were uncalled for. I'm sure all the trolling scared the heck out of her and that is why she pulled her account. I would be scared some nutzo might be pretending to be interested. Geez people this was alittle overboard.

Custom Blue Bike stolen in Logan Square

Please be on the lookout for this bike, second one stolen in 2 years. Already posted in the Stolen Bike Registry and filed a police report. More info about the bike here: http://chicago.stolenbike.org/node/195867

Sorry to hear! I just had one stolen in the same area. I ended up finding it on craigslist about a month later. Apparently there is a guy named Gustavo who sells bikes out of his garage on kimball and Diversey. Mine ended up there, and the police have his info. Best of luck!

Donation pick-up?

Hi there, it seems that organizations that used to pick up at my house (near Kimball/Wrightwood) no longer do so. Full disclosure: I'm too lazy to drop off and like the tax write-off perk that comes with donation, so I am missing these pick-ups (VVA/Amvets/Purple Heart/Cancer Federation have all responded that they no longer pick up in my neighborhood). Anybody know of anything? If not I guess I resort back to Free Stuff (and accompanying flakes) on CL and the Mysterious Alley People and forgo my tax deductions.

  • I live on Central Park and make regular trips to the Salvation Army to drop off donations (trying to declutter the house and basement!) and would be more than happy to drop off some neighbors items too, so as not to see them go in the trash. Just shoot me a message, and I'll try and coordinate a time with you.

  • freecycle is a great resource too. better luck having people follow through on picking up items than on craigslist.

Handyman needed for a small roofing job

We have been searching for a few weeks to find someone for a small roofing job - to seal around a few stack pipes, and cap one (2 story single family home). We were told that this job should take less than 30 minutes, but because it's the end of roofing season, everyone is busy and only taking big ticket jobs. The last guy to come out said to make it worth his time, it would be $600-700. Everyblock has given folks some great advice, so I thought I would give it a shot! Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

Sawyer/wrightwood street lights out STILL??

Okay maybe someone posted about this already. It's been I feel a couple weeks now that the street lights have been out on Sawyer between Atlgeld and Wrightwood. Now I don't come home late at night often but when I do I certainly don't feel safe not being able to have a well lit safe street to park and walk on. I already called the aldermans about this. Graffiti

I've seen this particular graffiti popping up around my neighborhood. Anyone see it elsewhere or know who it's affiliated with?

  • Go look at missile and just behind liberty bank that is called art .

  • Arguing what is and isn't art is pointless. There's no right answer. It's opinion.
And yes kittyhop I know you meant Berlin the city and my comment stands that I enjoy that particular type of freedom of expression. However most street artists, taggers, whatever know better than to tag houses and garages so it's fair to be upset at the ones who break that unspoken rule.

Kosciuszko Pool- Lap Swim

I swim there occasionally--when you buy a park district lap swim pass, it's good at all of their pools. Compared to the other park district pools I've swam at, I'd say Koz has less than the average amenities but is still adequate. There are no lane lines, and there's no sink or mirror or hand dryers/paper towels in the locker room. So if you go to the bathroom you have to wash your hands in the shower and dry your hands on your own towel. Forget about styling your hair or drying it. Not the end of the world, but not ideal either. The lack of lane lines has always unnerved me, and it seems like it would be a problem if the pool was really full, but I've never actually seen it get really full so maybe it's just not an issue. It's typically filled with more casual swimmers rather than competitive ones.

And yeah, many of the park district locations do not update their schedules online promptly so it's always best to verify all the info you need to know while you're actually at the pool, especially around holidays or seasons changing.

The first time I went, I was very confused about the layout--you walk straight ahead until you're actually inside the pool room, then show the lifeguard your lap swim pass, then proceed to the right for the women's locker room. (Most places you go in the locker room first.)

  • I used to swim at this Park District pool years ago and it was free. All Park District pools were free.

I basically want someone to help me go through all the clothes I currently own, pick out which clothes to keep, sell or donate the ones I get rid of, and then figure out what key pieces I should buy to create a basic palette that I can use throughout the winter. Then, I'll probably want someone to do the same in the spring. Ideally, I'd love to find someone willing to do the work for cheap or free, and then we can split the money from any clothes I sell. I found one person who provides this service in Chicago, but she charges a minimum of $200 for just a couple hours of work, and that's out of my budget range.

Two kind people helped stop traffic and push me to the north side of California, across the street from the Starbucks. It was a large black man and a small black woman who helped me push the car. They checked that I had help and left me. I immediately started walking south to the gas station on Fullerton and California. I was gone about ten minutes. When I returned it was gone, though a hubcap was still on the sidewalk.

The person I talked to at the police station said that it is likely that someone perhaps with a tow truck saw it was broken down and took it. It would have been very hard to get gas for it and steal it in the time I was gone. I do have all the keys.

If anyone was in the area at the time or saw anything suspicious, please let me know. Thank you so much.

I happened upon the clinic during a walk with my son over the past weekend and set an appointment for last night. Community-style acupuncture treatments cost only $25.00 per treatment (first treatment adds $10.00), and private appointments are available if wanted/needed. I am a licensed acupuncturist myself, and I've experienced acupuncture in many different environments. I had a great experience last night during my appointment and will be back. If you are at all interested in trying acupuncture and/or Chinese herbal medicine as a treatment option for yourself, I highly recommended checking this place out. In my opinion, a good, professional and affordable clinic that offers alternative medicine will only enhance the sustainability and enjoyability of our community! http://www.fivepointholistichealth.com/

  • I'm curious why some don't want to see it torn down. Is it just the memories you have of going there?

  • Katie, from what I have heard many people don't want that intersection turning into another Lincoln Park--which is a totally fair critique, however I feel like just about anything would be better than a languishing, mostly-empty, huge, warehouse-like building that's there now.

A close reading of that inspection indicates that an awful lot of what they were failed over is things that were not physically even on the premises at the time the inspection took place. Those are pieces that had not been supplied, and could be on back order, either by the vendor who did the installation, or the company being contracted for their waste disposal. Not a big deal. Just seems a bit like a rush job, or they had locked down the date for inspection, and as things tend to happen. The job is taking longer than they originally anticipated, and planned when they broke ground.

Buying commercial real estate?

Does anyone have experience with, or can refer me to someone who has, buying commercial real estate? My business is losing its lease in a few years, and I'm considering buying something with maybe an apartment attached? It's very difficult for us to find space because we have pretty unique space requirements, so I'd rather not have to worry about leases ending ever again.

I know the rules for commercial are different from residential, so I'd love to just casually get some info without any pressure. Or, if you have experience, you can post your story here...

Thanks, everyone!

Hard to believe

Such mixed feelings on how the neighborhoods changed.
At Sawyer and Wrightwood. Apparently this 20-year-old white girl has called the cops because someone hit her bumper. Two scratches maybe.

  • Small dings and scratch are part of the social contract one agrees to by parking on a public street.

  • Carter O'Brien my kingdom to end the Belmont bus bunching

Well, there is a reason they are called bumpers, right?

But on the other hand, without more details it's hard to know what might have happened. If someone's selfish behavior is going to cost me cash out of pocket, hell yes I'm reporting you. I've had a few times over...

    Read full comment…

Well, there is a reason they are called bumpers, right?

But on the other hand, without more details it's hard to know what might have happened. If someone's selfish behavior is going to cost me cash out of pocket, hell yes I'm reporting you. I've had a few times over the years where cars parked literally on top of my bumper, in those extreme cases I've had to get a buddy and physically lift up and move a car off (in which case I feel no shame stating said car was placed somewhere I assume it got ticketed if not towed).

m123 - let's stay grounded in the discussion as it pertains to Logan Square. I grew up in and around Lake View and Logan Square, and taking the other extreme position and claiming white people only visited the neighborhood to buy drugs is just incorrect.

Most kids avoid gangs. But it's easier to do for some than others. There was no pressure to do so on my block, we had factory workers around who kept the wanna-be tough guys in check. But I had a friend who committed suicide in his early twenties, and I know that one of the things that led to it was his struggle being a non-gang affiliated Mexican kid in Logan Square. He got harassed everywhere he went, he ended up moving, but he still went home to see his parents, friends, etc. He talked about it a lot.

My point was simply that in a city this size there will always be young men who band together and cause varying amounts of trouble. I tell everyone the same thing- adults, get outside and do something positive. Garden. Shovel. Sit on your stoop and talk to your neighbors. Walk your dog. Law abiding "regular" people outnumber the serious thugs by an order of 10 to 1, easy. But complaining on the internet, apathy and letting those people think they own a street and do whatever they want without repercussions will destroy a neighborhood.

How to avoid parking my car on a street cleaning day while I'm on vacay?

I wonder if you guys have a solution to this. I park my car on the streets in Logan Square where no permit is needed. I'll be going out of town for ten days and am afraid that during one of those days they may put up "no parking" signs for cars to be moved during street cleaning days. I don't want my car towed while I'm out of town and unable to move my car.

You might suggest that I have a friend move it but I just moved here and don't know many people yet who would be willing to do that for me. So I need a different solution.

Does anyone have thoughts on this?

I live in a three flat in Logan/Avondale and my landlord speaks very little English. He lives in the building and has made it a point to enter my apartment without warning, once I was in the shower and heard a knock on my bathroom door. I freaked out when I heard his voice, got out of the shower, and he was still in my apartment. He has walked up to my roommates sliding glass door (before she hung curtains to prevent him from peering in) he would knock and look into her bedroom until she woke up from his knocking. He has made comments to me when I answer my door shortly after returning home from working out, comments such as "you lookin real good!" then proceeds to stare at me until I hide behind my door and slowly close it. Recently, I came home to a shattered lantern, my balcony table and chairs all moved around. I was scared. The next morning, my roommate sent me a text saying "i think you need to come see this." I walked to the back of our apartment, went out on the balcony only to find our landlord and a couple other guys priming our wrought iron balcony, they had removed all of my lights, moved all of our stuff around, and splattered paint on my table and chairs. I told him he needs to give us 24 hours notice before doing any work like this so I can safely move our belongings and that he needs to reimburse me for the lantern his workers destroyed. He laughed it off. I'm not real sure how to handle this? He has my cell phone number and my roommate's cell phone number, he can easily have his daughter (who speaks perfect English) communicate with us to give us a heads up for any future work that needs to be performed. We really love our neighborhood, don't have any other issues other than the rather pressing issue of feeling a bit sexually harassed by our landlord. I hate to use that term but I'm not sure what else to call it? I don't know what to do about the comments made to me and entering our apartment without notice?

Thank you, llitman. I appreciate your feedback. I have actually been looking at available apartments for the past week or so. I'm also working on a letter with the help of a friend who is an attorney to let my landlord know how he has violated our lease, privacy, and safety. I've got all of my emails saved, the emails to my roommate and a couple of friends, explaining the incidents in which he has made us feel uncomfortable so I have the dates and I can recall the specifics of each instance. I still have a hard time wrapping my head around him knocking on my bathroom door while I was in the shower then refraining from leaving my apartment while he knew I was showering. This is the second time I've lived in a building that is also occupied by the owner/landlord and it just never feels like it's my home, I feel like I'm living in someone else's home and simply paying them for it. I've learned my lesson the hard way, I won't live in a landlord or owner occupied building ever again.

I'm glad to hear you are being proactive at protecting yourself. I have lived in bad apartment situations and finally found a wonderful place I could call home. It is worth every penny to feel safe in your apartment and find a "home". My sentiments are exactly as litman described.

Charges and arrest records in Cook County?

Is there a way to view charges against a certain person, or view their arrest records with Cook County? Do you have to pay for this service? Also, do they record who requested the records? Thank you for any info. I will call Cook Cty tomorrow and ask too.

Anyone tried out Logan Square Fitness yet?

Just wondered what the overall vibe is, if it gets packed at certain hours, etc. Has anyone joined - what do you think?

  • I agree with everyone else, its never very crowded and the guy at the front desk is always really nice. The classes are free too, I've taken the yoga and x-fit class' and both are great, and the instructors are nice too. I only live two blocks away so I've never used the locker rooms, but I don't have any complaints, and its going to get bigger. They're going to open a much larger class area as well.

  • I have been a member for a couple of months and really like the convenience of the location. They offer month-to-month memberships at $39 per month (which is what I'm doing), but you can also sign up for a year at $29 per month OR 3 and 6 month memberships,...

I have been a member for a couple of months and really like the convenience of the location. They offer month-to-month memberships at $39 per month (which is what I'm doing), but you can also sign up for a year at $29 per month OR 3 and 6 month memberships, which they are offering until the end of October (not sure how the price works out for those). I like the month to month option, especially since I had no idea if I would like it/want to stay when I first signed up. I have done a bunch of the regularly scheduled yoga classes, which are good. I have also gone to some early-morning (6:30am) pop-up yoga classes, which were great but only had 2 or 3 people. I hope they add regular morning yoga classes, but I have been told by the guy at the front desk that they are planning to push back evening classes and add additional class times as well (they said Sept. 23rd is the planned date for this, but they are notoriously bad about keeping their promises in terms of dates--see: Grand Opening).

TL;DR Definitely worth it to join, especially if you live very close.

Home Organizer recommendation

Hi Everyone...I have recently (ok, not really, but for the sake of argument) downsized from a multi-level townhome to to a unit in a 2-unit building. I have a lot of stuff that I would like some help in clearing out and was looking for an organizer to help me decide what to junk/sell/keep/donate as well as help me stay organized going forward. Any thoughts?

    Hi VP Girl,
This is Ericka from She Sorts Organizing. I'd love to help you out with your goals to downsize and get organized! I do free 20 minute assessments for folks in the neighborhood. I'm happy to stop by. You can PM me or get me at shesorts@gmail.com, or at www.shesorts.com, and we can set up a time.
My advice is, regardless of which company you go with, to make sure that they are properly licensed and insured to come into your home and handle your things. I'm also a member of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO), so I bring a level of ethics, confidentiality, and professional training to ensure you the best experience possible.

Lots of folks can help you go through stuff and arrange it. But a Professional Organizer, trained through NAPO, is uniquely qualified to not only facilitate your decision-making, but to also transfer those organizing skills to you, so you can continue to be happy and organized in your space going forward.

    best,
    Ericka

Thanks again...Ericka, I will send you an email.
