Did You Apply for the $1 Large Lot Program?

If you applied for the Large Lot program, www.largelots.org we want to hear from you. Did you find the process difficult? Easy? Confusing?

Yes I did apply, the only thing that was confusing is the majority the application did not pertain to me.So the notary almost didn't notarize it.Other than that I was glad that I was able to apply, weird things there are at least 3 other lots that are vacant that are private owned. The city says they will take the lot back if u don't keep it clean, yet I have been cleaning them since I've been on the block,so should they take them from the private owners whom I've never seen in 12years.They are holding on until the value of the community comes back and they have the neighborhood the way they want it.So sad how they allow the Black neighborhoods to just waste away. There are things that are out of our control but the city and news will make outsiders believe see how they live when we didn't foreclose on properties the Banks did.Prayfully the lots will help beautify the neighborhoods and the news won't say crime ridden they will say the Good that is in E.W and I have been here for a long time.

  • Happy making better choices

Although your effort is great Tina, don't clean those lots or the city assumes the owner is taking care of it. Report the lot bc for garbage and stuff so you have report numbers and the city has a paper trail of contacting the owner as proof they don't do anything. I file complaints on a building near me at least once a month, so that owner is held accountable.

For those who want to try a different way: go to a Police Board meeting and give testimony. Go singlely or as a group. Register in advance to testify. Go up to the Mic and ask the Police Board to ask CPD to dispatch service at the problem spot. As this is near a Post Office and School it is even more silly that CPD won't protect Postal Patrons.

Email: Patrick.r.donahoe@Usps.org and Karen.e.schenck@usps.org and tell them what is going on. Email Marquetta at Danny Davis Office and ask they get involved. He is on the Postal board and in 2007 got Congressional meetings started where Chicago was designated the worst Post Office in the Country.

Seems we need another Congressional Hearing about stuff that goes on in the Post Office. Perhaps if Congress hears that CPD is not policing streets and keeping Postal Stations secure...Congress can act on that too!!!

We could rename outself. Slaughter house Chicago.

If you go this route....post your steps on EB so the community can see what was done. Remember...elections are coming and VOTE...out these politicians who can't get city service right and safety right. Of course, keep the ones who have served you well.

What Should Englewood do with our Closed Schools?

RAGE has been at the forefront of the school repurposing issue since last year before the "list" was revealed. We recommended to "independent" commission to leave all of our schools open but if the district made the decision to close a school it should be repurposed to meet the needs of the community. We then submitted draft plans for two of the schools in the area based off of feedback from residents and organizations to district and push the fact that community needs to be at the forefront of these conversations. Then, it September a School Repurposing Council was developed to further look into this issue. In December, we recently shared a white paper written by our President, Aysha Butler, which you can download here: http://ragenglewood.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/white-paper-vacant-schools-in-englewood.pdf

As many of you know, Englewood has one of the highest unemployment rates in the city, we are plagued with high crime stats, and other issues. We have six closed buildings - Yale, Earle, Woods, Bontemps, Wentworth and Mays.

What should we as a community do with these closed schools? How would we sustain these buildings for the long term?

We want to hear your thoughts and solutions about this issue....

$7M dollars is designated for job training and retraining in the Englewood Neighborhood TIF District. Download the full report at the link below, go to page 2 line item #6 Job Training and Retraining Line Item.

Excerpt from Englewood Neighborhood TIF 10 year Report about job creation -

"Permanent job creation associated with private, non-residential and completed TIF-supported projects (see Redevelopment Agreement Projects in Exhibit 8) can be estimated using industry benchmarks and other available sources. The Englewood Neighborhood RPA currently does not have any completed private projects, therefore no permanent job creation has been estimated to occur between 2001 and 2011."

So in 10 years we have not secured permanent job creation in an area with high crime and increasing unemployment rates? Is everyone to blame for this mess? Our Mayor? Alderman? Churches? Residents? Organizations? Etc? How can we as the community demand that these funds be put to good use?

Full report here: http://ragenglewood.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/t_106_englewood_10yr.pdf

  • AWOFINC Continual Growth Through Service

Sounds like a community meeting is in order. Participatory Budgeting gets input from the entire community on proposed projects. RFP's from CBO's and faith based institutions will provide ideas and programs. Using funds to provide job training and full and part-time positions in violence prevention would support the community.

RIP off Avenue: If it wasn't so serious, it would be laughable.....TIF in the Hood! Its just not an Englewood problem. Year in and year out, bogus politically connected contracts are let for non existent projects, money ate up and nothing to show for it. The few things that you do see being worked on, is surrounded by workers with out of state license plates on their cars. I think I got the biggest kick out of the CTA red line do over, you know the red line with the majority stops and users in the Black neighborhoods, the contracted community consultant for this program at a cost of $250,000.00 was given to a White woman by the name of Sandi Llano, ain't that a kicker. We still don't have Bobby Rush's Community Tech Center, can't seen to find the $1 million of SBC money or the $175,000.00 from the State, then there's Jesse Brunt and his cable companies fraud another multi million dollar walk away project. There the 2 white guys Giovenco and Palmer who where able to successfully secure $8 Mil in sub-contracts by fending as a minority own business, they hired some sap Black guy as the pasty....Black guy Jerome Mayes pocketed $15K, Porter got $1.8 Mil, Giovenco walked with $800,00.00, even when stealing black guy walk away with the crumbs. Rep. Will Davis (d) wife Jaclin Davis took in a salary of $137,000.00 for the Neighborhood Initiative Program, than we had Regina and Ron Evan and their "We are our brothers keeper" program, go down in flame, when the "MONEY got Funny)! I mean this stuff goes on and on, where its going to stop, nobody knows!

  • imagine imagine all the people living life in peace

This is what Rahmbo calls cleaning up the neighborhood. buying people off and building a railroad.....The problem of Englewood solved! It no longer exists!

Website Helps Neighbors Buy Vacant Lots for $1

It was big news in Greater Englewood in March when the City of Chicago announced that it would begin a pilot Large Lot Program that allowed nearby homeowners, block clubs and nonprofit groups to buy vacant lots for just $1.

But the application deadline is April 21 and there are a lot of steps in the process, from identifying the available lots to establishing eligibility and then filing the application.

Now there's an app for that: http://largelots.org

Excellent question about property taxes. The good programmers at DataMade have added a link to property tax data, in response to this thread, but since the lots have been city owned they show up with $0 property tax liability.

We'll have to look to the city and county to provide some guidance on this, as it's a valid question. One wouldn't take on a property without knowing the potential tax liability; it would be like buying a car without thinking about the gas mileage.

Large Lots was featured on ABC7 News tonight, focusing on plans to buy three lots by Tina Harbin and the Harvard Yale Homeowners Assn. More than 150 people have applied for the $1 lots.
