Help preserve the monarchs

Help sustain the dwindling monarch butterfly population by planting a few milkweed seeds in your garden or in any open ground near you (e.g., vacant lots, along the train tracks, in community gardens). I will place a box of seed pods on my parkway garden at 1231 W. Addison, so help yourself to a few seeds. The large seed pods are for the common milkweed that gets about 3 feet tall and has fragrant pink flowers, while the small dark pods are from butterfly weed, another type of milkweed that has orange flowers and gets about 2 feet tall.
Conservationists are calling for a nationwide campaign to save the monarch--you can be a part of this effort. It's a great project for kids, too. Read more at http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-monarch-butterfly-herbicide-kennedy-perspec-102-20141021-story.html

That is great Anita, thank you. I live in a high rise so can't take advantage but hope others will.

  • I will definitely take some. Thanks for caring and sharing. I have wanted to plant some along with wildflowers for awhile now.

Deciphering gang graffiti

On my morning walk I noticed a lot of stickers around Belmont Harbor containing an X and the letters S H I T in each of the four quadrants. Some were more elaborate and some were very simple. Most seem to be located near other graffiti. In one case, the sticker contained the dates Oct. 23, Oct. 24, Oct. 25 and Oct. 26. Anyone have any insights? (And yes, I reported the graffiti to the city.)

There seems to be a URL on some of the stickers, but I'd rather not get my computer infected with a virus. Google didn't turn up anything useful. The photographs were taken in the Roscoe underpass, but I also noticed a lot of the stickers toward the south end of the harbor.

New to Lakeview/Chicago. Looking to meet new people/friends

Hey! I'm 24 and new to the area. I moved from Ohio. I am wonderig if there are any groups in the area related to coffee/wine/book clubs? Also just looking to meet new people and friends. Thanks!

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

Welcome to Lakeview! We are quite a friendly bunch...most of the time! ;)

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

There are lots of great ways to meet neighbors! Volunteering, CAPS meetings, classes, houses of worship, etc.

  • A great place to meet people, find coffee/wine/book clubs, and explore Chicago is through Meetup.com. When you go to their website, type "Lakeview" in the search window and you will find groups that meet in your area. One meetup group that I highly recommend to explore Chicago neighborhoods is "Windy City Explorers." Good luck and welcome to Chicago

Excel 2013 class - free or paid. Recommendations?

I'm looking for someplace in Chicago, between Lakeview and downtown, to learn about Excel 2013. I want a live instructor, not a virtual one. I've looked and found several paid options. I fully expect to pay but would like a recommendation if anyone has one. Thank you.

Advice on Sealing Split-Faced Block

Hi neighbors - For those who live in a condo with split-faced block, any advice or lessons you can share on having it treated to protect against moisture? I'm on the board for a 6-unit condo with split-faced block on two sides of the building. We last had it treated in 2010, and I'm calling some contractors for quotes to get it done again in the spring. That said, I wanted to do a little research beforehand. Any information you can share on local contractors, types of sealing products, or things to ask about or watch out for would be much appreciated!

  • Thank you all for your referrals and insights on sealing products - I greatly appreciate it! I've called a few contractors for quotes and plan to get this done when the weather is dry enough in the spring. Thanks, again!

Book Clubs

Anyone know of an East Lake View book club that is expanding membership?
Finishing Barbara Kingsolver's Flight Behavior (big Kingsolver fan) and hoping to find a group that plans to discuss this or others of her books. (fyi: GoodReads has a video interview with her that you might want to check out.)

Where to donate mini toiletries

Does anyone know where I can donate mini toiletries? I have so many from hotel stays/birthday gifts/holiday gifts - and I really just don't use them. I was wondering if anyone knew where I can give these away?

  • Also best not to donate mini-mouthwashes as many contain alcohol and are not accepted by organizations anyhow.

  • so many great causes and such a great idea! i have hundreds of these from years of business travel, and it's clear that i will never use them. i'm going to drop off today!

Peoples Gas, what's going on?

For the third time this year, Peoples Gas has been working on the 3600 block of North Ashland Avenue. Just one month after the street had been smoothly repaved they came back and started ripping it apart all over again. Now we have five metal plates that rattle the homes along the way and the noise doesn't allow for a good night sleep. They have extended the "No Parking" ban all along the block for yet another week but nobody shows up to work even on sunny days. I am afraid the constant shaking is going to take a toll on the homes in the area. Does anybody know how to go about reporting this?

  • Herecomestheman Character assassin.

Peoples infrastructure is the same as most in this country. Water mains, sewers and bridges are all crumbling and in need of updating. There are a lot of things that should have been replaced 50 years ago.

  • C'mon it's Peoples and the City of Chicago, two of the most inept and inefficient entities on earth, and you want sense, efficiency and coordination?

Chicago Speed Camera Map: watch out for one by Lane Tech High School

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/viewer?mid=zDIlbNW6Kzv4.kWRTNheTjAho

Just an fyi, speed cameras in school zones are set if you go over 20 mph. Watch out for one at 2501 W. Addison by Lane Tech High School. The normal speed limit is 30 mph and the cameras run longer than expected (6am - 9pm?) not just during school hours. $100 ticket.

  • I agree, Liz. I think 20 is reasonable, but they need to be more clear about the times. Like others have mentioned. I go 20 whenever I pass there now. I don't want to end up arguing in court that I didn't see any students. That would be hard to prove. I've lived places where the school speed limit is 15, but they always made it clear with additional signage.

  • I just drove on Addison around 10am. Saw the white strobe light. I saw my speed limit. It was 24-25. I didn't see any students on street or sidewalk. This should prevent me getting a ticket as you need to be 6mph and above. But who knows. I still think...

I just drove on Addison around 10am. Saw the white strobe light. I saw my speed limit. It was 24-25. I didn't see any students on street or sidewalk. This should prevent me getting a ticket as you need to be 6mph and above. But who knows. I still think having flashing lights would be much better for all drivers.

Here's what I found on Chicago website: (How does the camera differentiate pedestrians from children?) Emphasis mine.

School Zones: School days, Monday through Friday

7 a.m. to 4 p.m.: 20 mph speed limit when *children* are present in the *safety zone* and 30 mph when no children are present in the safety zone

    4 p.m. to 7 p.m.: 30 mph speed limit
