3. Walking home with my boyfriend, 8 pm. Man jumps in our face yelling that we're gross, both of us. (I can assure you, we're not).

These things all occurred during normal weekday hours. It's starting to make me uncomfortable even walking down that corridor, and I've never felt that way before.

Has anyone else noticed a lot of weird going ons over there?

  • A long term resident of 505 Belmont, a building with Section 8 tenants, told me there is drug dealing going on inside/out in front and the alley behind is a drive through drug market. The drug dealers come out the back of the building and sell, the cars drive through. Could be drifting over to Belmont/Broadway

Mui Ne you are correct that our mayor closed clinics and that is a huge problem and may contribute to some of the crime, but you are wrong that people need to be in institutions. Very few people with mental illness need that, they need treatment and help just like anyone with an illness. People with mental illness are more likely to be the victims of crime than the perpetrators. I would suspect gangs are a bigger part of the problem. If you suspect that someone is having a mental health crisis call 911 and ask for a CIT officer. Crisis Intervention Training teaches officers how to safely interact with people with mental illness or disability.

Memory care home for dementia - least expensive in the area?

Sorry, to be so direct about a sensitive subject but memory care is way expensive and my family has to budget the money available very closely as there are two people involved. Right now they are paying $7,000.00 a month for two and, while that is a very good price, they are living out of state and, though its a very nice facility, they beg hourly to come back to the Chicago area.. Its impossible to get costs online. Thanks very much for any information.

The Referendum: Has the CTA sufficiently justified the $320 million proposed Brown Line Flyover project and its impact on local homes and businesses?

Vote NO to insist the CTA let the community know what they plan before it’s too late to stop them.

The CTA Belmont El ‘flyover’ will waste $320 million++. Save Central Lakeview, a thriving restaurant, shopping, business district, from being ruined by the unnecessary Brown Line ‘flyover.’ Don’t let them waste your money, ruin your neighborhood.

The flyover will swing wide over two blocks of Clark Street, turning a large chunk
of this essential street into an under-El wasteland. Many commercial buildings and homes will be destroyed. Those still standing will be left facing under-El emptiness and an overhead train.

The CTA ‘findings’ are false, their drawings intentionally misleading.
Plans have NOT been finalized; please speak up for Lakeview before it’s too late.

  • Mike - Reading these and your past posts voiced in CTA verbiage, I'm assuming you work for or are somehow closely tied to the CTA. Otherwise, such dedication to defending the CTA’s obvious lies about the “need” for this ruinous flyover is simply bizarre.

What I'm seeing from people who live near it is simply "NIMBY" -- Not In My BackYard. That blocks a whole lot of worthy projects from ever getting done, from homeless shelters to nuclear reactors. If it were getting done a few miles away, where it didn't impact the speaker directly, they'd be all in favor of it.

Muskie's Closing

Sigh... Another institution bites the dust. Muskie's (corner of Lincoln/George/Lakewood) is closing either this Saturday or next Saturday. They are renters and the owner wants to do something else with the property. The cleaner next door also has to close soon.

Muskie's was one of my first jobs in the hood, Fazzio's had better food though. the Insane Unknowns had presence, but they were pretty chill, they seemed to take the name literally. You just didn't wear blue and black, though, that was pushing your luck, especially north near Addison. But by Muskie's the meatpacking plant workers, who in the 80s were Appalachians, old school German Irish, gypsies, Mexicans, all kinds of folks, really dominated the area in every sense. Puerto Ricans were really more to the south as I recall, I think gentrification pushed them north from the strip on Armitage in LP and they started moving in the neighborhood starting in maybe the late 70s or early 80s, but the gentrification was hot on their heels and neither they nor any of the old timers stuck around much past 90, if that. My mom's block only had 2 families left from when I was a kid by the time I moved out in 94. The family who ran Lawry's Tavern for over half a century may be the last holdouts.

The teenage tough guys, gangbangers or just hoods, loudmouths, etc. weren't so tough after that last shift ended and guys who cut apart carcasses all day hit the local taverns. More than a few had guns, it really was a completely alien environment to what we have now. I remember adults walking around on Halloween and grabbing teens and smashing their eggs where they were hiding them in their pockets. It was pretty entertaining, actually. Anyone remember the Beartrap? It was a madhouse when it got hot. They stopped arresting our next door neighbor after a while and just walked him home some nights. Poor bugger died of cirrhosis at 40 and left a wife with 4 small kids, pretty sad stuff, and too many like him. Those neighborhoods were so different when you had taverns and grocery stores at even the side street intersections... Not exactly the "shop local" environment the younger folks are keen on building.

Chicago Speed Camera Map: watch out for one by Lane Tech High School

Just an fyi, speed cameras in school zones are set if you go over 20 mph. Watch out for one at 2501 W. Addison by Lane Tech High School. The normal speed limit is 30 mph and the cameras run longer than expected (6am - 9pm?) not just during school hours. $100 ticket.

I received a warning there when the signs first went up. In some suburbs I've seen flashing yellow lights on the signs when the 20 mph limit is being enforced. This would help make things less vague. I believe that right now the signs say "on school days when children are present". By the time you see an 18 year old "child ", you probably have already been caught. Might help if they had specific hours, also. If a " child " is on the sidewalk at 6:00pm that shouldn't be a school zone violation. And, is a day in July a school day if summer school may be in session?

  • Rose real estate advisor 10+ year resident of Roscoe Village

Thanks Peter. In fact I did receive a ticket July 3rd at 3:10pm. I discovered that Lane Tech does NOT have summer school and has not for years. I had to provide physical evidence of this fact as the judge whom I contested the ticket in front of required it. I went to the school and got a letter stating this. I learned that warning tickets are only given the first 30 days a speed camera is installed. No second chances with the Addison camera.

  • OMG

  • Just spoke with someone from the Alderman's office and the area affected should be Belmont & Seminary where they are connecting a waterline. Work will only take an hour or hour and a half, so shouldn't last until 9PM.

Hard Candy Source?

I've recently developed a liking for hard candy. Do you know of a store that offers a good variety? I mostly shop at Jewel and Whole Foods, and they seem to concentrate on chocolates and chewy candies, with just a sampling of hard candies. Now I'm interested in branching out a bit.

Wow! I certainly did not expect a thread as long and involved as this when I originally posted my question! Thank you all for your responses. Shortly after the initial responses came in I visited Windy City Sweets on Broadway and bought a nice selection of candies for $6.99/lb. I think that's a reasonable price. And I discovered a couple new favorites, which was my intention. And I was happy to support a local store, which I will continue to do as I try some of the other suggestions when my supply runs out.

I actually do prefer chocolates and chewies, but my new interest in hard candies is to help me practice self-discipline. They are less fattening then cookies, pastries, and chocolates, but satisfy the need for something sweet at the end of the meal, and not as conducive to binging.

Property Tax Resource

Does anyone know of a good property tax resource such as a website to walk me through it or a lawyer.

I have successfully appealed by myself in the past. But I don't know if I got back the most I could have, I don't know if I should appeal again; if I should appeal again, I don't know if a lawyer is worth it or if I should just "make stuff up" like I did last time. All I know is my mailbox gets flooded with lawyers fishing for my business and I would prefer to pay less in taxes rather than more.

Thank you!

  • All you need is a GOOD appraisal from a CERTIFIED r/e appraiser. Send in the appraisal with the appeal to C/County. Call Illinois Appraisal. 773 528 4265. 25 yrs experience.

I've used Gary Howell Smith, 312-236-7447 (Wells at Wacker). As a lawyer, now retired (I didn't handle this sort of work for paying clients), I'm somewhat agnostic as to whether having a lawyer prosecute your challenge is worthwhile: I've gone to these politician-sponsored seminars and filed my own there with some favorable results. I think at the assessor's office it makes sense to have a lawyer (who gets paid only if the challenge is successful). After that, at various boards of review, I'm not so certain. The problem is that the tax-assessment system is a big lottery and I believe that the assessors behind the counter throw little bones to the plebs while they give large cuts to the major campaign contributors.

water heater recommendations

The water heater in our 8 unit condo building needs to be replaced. Any recommendations on installers? Tankless?

Thank you in advance!

  • The best improvement I have ever made is getting a tankless hot water heater. I love it and had no problems. Endless hot water on demand, no running out of hot water if you take a bath then shower or have company. Saves on utilities because only heats water on demand.

  • Gas h/w heater from a Wheeling distributor was $400. My handyman was $100. $25 in copper parts. Dont get ripped off.
