A Lakeview woman was beaten in an armed robbery early Wednesday morning by a man whose jacket retails for over $1,000.

Police and a fire department ambulance met the victim near the crime scene at Lakewood and Henderson shortly after 3AM.

She told them that the offender took her purse, which contained a cell phone and other items, before fleeing southbound on Sheffield toward Belmont.

The robber is described as a black man, 5'9" tall, and 150 pounds. He wore a distinctive red Pelle Pelle brand letterman jacket with white lettering and "sequins" on the back.

Other officers and even the ambulance driver reported that they saw the offender minutes before the robbery call came in—once at the Subway restaurant near Belmont and Clark and again walking eastbound on Buckingham Place near Halsted.

Unfortunately, officers were unable to locate the man after the robbery was reported.

The incident is recorded as an armed robbery in CPD case HX468088.

The no police thing really bothers me. I've been complaining to our alderman. This being an election year, I suggest if you are upset about the crime, or lack of police response, call your alderman. Let them know you will be voting for his contender without a crime plan for his district.

Music box

Does anyone know what is being built next to the music box? I'm hoping for an old school movie themed bar, but have no idea.

Michael Diversey's Closed?!

Darnit. I noticed the restaurant closed. I'm a bit surprised as it was always pretty busy. Anyone know if something new is going in? I hope so. I don't like the empty spaces on Diversey right now.

Vitamin Shoppe at Clark and Diversey is closing January 31, 2015.

Although they are still looking for a storefront within walking distance of the old store, they are inviting people to shop at their new store, now open, at 3325 N Ashland across from Whole Foods.

Shoppers will be made aware of their store at 2705 N. Elston near Target and their store at 1590 N. Clybourn. The Clybourn store is near the Apple Store and the Red Line stop. The block has a reputation for "apple picking," so hold onto your smart-phone.

In the same shopping strip as their Elston store will be a medical marijuana dispensary at 2723 N Elston, next to the mattress shop where they can take a nap. The parking lot is often full. After the pot shop opens, parking may be tight as some people may drive there, park, forget they drove, and walk home. Only kidding, they'll be too stoned to walk.

None of the above will replace our neighborhood store within walking distance of Diversey/Clark/Broadway.

    Bob,

Thanks for that information. I did stop by Vitamin Shoppe and found that out. I shop there fairly often but don't think I will as much (Amazon Prime will get my business) if they move so far away. The guy did say they were "stuck" with the spot about the old Nine West store. I asked why they didn't take those two floors. Hopefully they will move right next store.

Locked Out Neighbor Scam

Just had someone ring my doorbell, then jiggle my doorhandle, and when I answered (a minute later) he was on his way down my steps, but started into a short shpeel about being my neighbor from across the street and being locked out. Just had someone ring my doorbell, then jiggle my doorhandle, and when I answered (a minute later) he was on his way down my steps, but started into a short shpeel about being my neighbor from across the street and being locked out. I was standoff-ish, so he scurried off, but the while thing was so strange that I called the police to do a driveby. Afterward I did a quick Google search which led me to another post on their site from the North Center neighborhood.

So this guy's definitely a scammer. Just search this site for "neighbor in distress" and read the posts. Wanted to start a new post here since it appears the scammer is now starting to target the Lakeview neighborhood.

From the other posts, it appears the guy is after a few bucks, but who knows when that starts to escalate.

Guy was white, about 6', short hair, medium-light brown, maybe 50 years old. Wore a black leather jacket.

We live in Lincoln Park and my wife has had this happen to her (same guy) twice when she was at home in the middle of the day. The guy in her case claimed his wife was pregnant and in labor but he had lost his keys or something like that. The guy was quite aggressive. Don't open your door and call 911.

  • d3 NOH

If you offer to call 911 for an ambulance the buzzer will never go off again.

Chinese Restaurant

I am looking for a good Chinese Restaurant/Take-out in the Lakeview or Roscoe Village Area. I have tried a few and nothing to make me want to go back again. Any suggestions? Thank you.

  • ....and now I need to have Young's hot & sour soup for lunch. :-)
Young's is much nicer inside than the sign would indicate, btw - great for in-house diming, too!

  • And I always feel bad just going for takeout, because the place is nice, they have alcohol, but no one is ever in there. One of these days.

Found Backpack

I found a backpack somebody tossed over the front fence in my home on Ashland. Possibly belonging to someone who was robbed or someone that got on an altercation early morning on Wednesday 12/17. If you are the owner, please email me for identification otherwise I will turn it to the Police Department.

Police Activity at 555 Cornelia Ave

Hey guys! I've been trolling the internet and EveryBlock trying to figure out what the heck happened but at about 5am on 12/4 (thursday morning) I walked out of my place and there were GOBS of police vehicles pointed in every which direction on Cornelia and Pine grove at that T in the road and had the street blocked off for like 6 hours. Seemed like there was a body on the ground beneath the balconies but I never heard any sirens or ambulances.... any one know what happened?

  • Rylee ChiDoc

So sad :( and no the scaffolding has been there for quite some time.... Maybe 5 months? However, I hadn't really seen anyone working on the windows until after this happened.

  • G.

How awful! I wonder if a window gave out and he fell? Keep us updated on any developments.

What You Need to Know About the Chicago Dining Scene This Week

Gluten-free gourmands, we have bad news: Senza (2873 N. Broadway, Lake View, 773-770-3527) will close on January 17. That’s the third Michelin...

This article has 7 other Chicago locations (Show)

Open now: Bucktown, meet the bincho grill at Izakaya Mita (1960 N. Damen Ave., 773-799-8677), a casual Japanese spot from a mother-son team.

Open now: Sugar Fixé Macaron (958 W. Armitage Ave., Lincoln Park, 773-799-8399), a companion to the Sugar Fixé Patisserie in Oak Park, is dedicating all its baking resources to the fussy French cookie, with 18 flavors on hand each day.

Open now: The biggest draw at the compact, BYOB Italian spot BarTucci (3426 N. Harlem Ave., Dunning, 773-887-4416)? Housemade pastas and foccacias from a family that’s been making the stuff for decades.

Friday, December 19: It’s the triumphant return of Pane Caldo (111 E. Chestnut St., Gold Coast). Well, sort of. This time, there’s a different owner (the team behind Pizzeria del Mercato) and a different chef (Joe Catanzariti).

You know how Takashi (1952 N. Damen Ave., Bucktown, 773-772-6170) was supposed to close after New Year’s? Add a couple more days to that. The Japanese tasting menu spot will stay open January 2nd and 3rd due to popular demand–call to make a reservation.

...Pearl Tavern people will proffer globally inspired meats at the Son Of A Butcher Tavern (2934 W. Diversey Ave., Logan Square), Bow Truss (2631 N. Kedzie Ave.) will join the battle for Logan Square...

Tree on Waveland and LSD

12/15/14 This early morning i woke up and saw this. I'm not an expert but the tree seemed fine. Also I have been living across the street for 7 years and I've never seen anybody try to cure the tree, if it was taken down for a tree disease. I'd rreally like to know what happened. Who should I ask?

  • fab

To dse, what do you mean you felt unsafe? Do you have something to share about the story of this tree? As I said I lived 7 years in front of that tree. It wasn't dead, it didn't lose more branches than the other trees around during the violent wind storms. No attempt to cure it so i say the cutting has been random.

  • dse

Just last month, a y=shaped "branch" about 5 feet long was hanging like an inverted wishbone, caught in the tree but precariously. this summer it had sparse leaves to the point of appearing dead. i'm not qualified to offer anything but a layperson's opinion, of course. perhaps it could have been saved, but it was dead looking and dry enough that we avoided it.

Found white and tan cat

I found a short haired, white and tan cat matching that description yesterday on the 1300 block of Wellington. It was super friendly and followed me home. Clearly someone's pet because he is very well fed. I took him to Urban Vet immediately and there's no chip. I've posted online and put up signs. He's in our living room and sweet as can be.

Photo here: http://imgur.com/BFsEpt8

  • Thanks! Based on pics this is not Chester or Felix, unfortunately. I've posted on Craigslist, Lost pets of Chicago, now Lost Cats of IL with a better picture. Also Reddit, Lost Pets USA and some signs on our street and at the vet. We're guessing this is an older male, with front claws. Crossing our fingers for a connection!

  • Connected with his family! Happy ending!
