Moving to Cragin

Hi, everyone!

I'm so excited to have found this website. I grew up in the NW suburbs and am moving back to the area after seven years in Columbus and Philadelphia, come the end of May. I'll be living around Belmont and Laramie. (I was under the impression that it was considered in Portage Park, but it seems to be listed as Cragin here on EveryBlock!)

Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and ask for any tips and suggestions...

Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and ask for any tips and suggestions for a person who is new to the neighborhood! What are the good places to eat or hang out? Where do you do your shopping? What should a new person know about this area?

Thanks so much :) Looking forward to being neighbors!

Jess

I don't know if anyone else wrote this but the boundaries of the hoods were redone a few years ago so North of Belmont is PP and South of it is Cragin.

  • Don't forget Bob-A-Rino's for sandwiches! So good.

Welcome, and yeah, that's not Portage Park. But close enough!

Crime and grafitti in our neighborhood

I heard that Indian Boundary and some other neighborhoods petitioned for tax breaks on their homes due to declining property values (O'Hare Airport noise) and won their appeals. Maybe we should appeal our property taxes also on the same basis due to the graffiti that is all over our neighborhoods and crime too. There are homes in our area that are just not selling and this is most likely the reason. I also notice that Alderman Arena and Alderman Cullerton are active in their everyblock posts. Guess that our guys, Suarez and Reboyas are too busy.

  • Marty92 4- yr. resident

Sounds like great idea. Our taxes just went up!!!

  • Marinewife 5 yrs in Cragin, Bungalow owner, CPS mom

It seems Suarez has plenty of time for photo ops...

  • When the ward maps were redrawn our block went from Cullerton to Reboyas. I decided to follow his FB page hoping to get updates on the neighborhood and other ward news. What a disappointment. Nothing there but dome random guy posting nonsense. I eventually posted asking him where I could...

When the ward maps were redrawn our block went from Cullerton to Reboyas. I decided to follow his FB page hoping to get updates on the neighborhood and other ward news. What a disappointment. Nothing there but dome random guy posting nonsense. I eventually posted asking him where I could find ward info and while my post recived several likes from others he never bothered to respond. Guess I got spoiled being in the 38th for so many years having an alderman that makes an effort to keep his constituents informed using various platforms.

Blackhawk Park Next Door group

If you live in and around the Blackhawk Park area (Fullerton to Armitage, Cicero to Laramie), you are more than welcome to join the neighborhood Nextdoor group.

https://blackhawkpark.nextdoor.com/choose_address/

  • Alonso Born and raised in the Cragin neighborhood.

Ignore the 8 day deadline. I talked to the main organizer for NextDoor a few days ago and she has lifted the deadline for ND's in her area. You can also post it on your FB page and see if others might join. Hopefully we get our 10 members quickly and can start making some much needed changes around here. :)

  • PetParent Founder of Pets Are Like Family

I just joined the group, but it says the group will dissolve in like 8 days if we don't at least 6 more members by then. I signed up to have postcards sent to neighbors, but that won't be quick enough.. I don't have neighbor email addresses. Hope you can get some more folks on board.

Lloyd Elementary School Parents and Potential Parents

I'd like to know more about our neighborhood school. Per CPS website, Lloyd is it. I'm in the 4900 block of west Altgeld. Are there any organized groups of parents or future parents of Lloyd students?

pet sitter or pet obedience school

So we just got a new plotthound from a shelter, he's around 5-6 months and needs training and since my wife and I both work full time we are looking for a sitter/trainer for the first couple of months. Any good place around here? We live around Diverse and Laramie. Thanks!

Wow, you guys have a few challenging months ahead. Hard to train a new puppy with two full time working parents. There are plenty of providers out there though that can lend a hand. I do not recommend sending him away to boarding school if that is what you're thinking. You should train your own dog for best results. I highly recommend Kiki Yablon. She can do home based training and work around your schedule. She lives in Logan Square and serves the whole north side area. She is a well educated, certified dog trainer. Not somebody who took some 4 week 'how to be a dog trainer' class from some big box store. She is also very involved in helping rescues and other non profits, so she's also just a great person. I used her to train one of my foster dogs in my home and was very impressed. www.kikiyablondogtraining.com

  • I used to have my Westie in a doggie care named The Fuzzy Dog, located at Irving Park and Central Park ave, but since you are in the area, I think this one located at Belmont ave close to Cicero ave will help you more: http://www.chicagocanineacademy.com/

Please check out the place and research their reviews and the training level of employees. Don't just pick a location because it's close to you. There are many poor quality pet providers all over Chicago.
